QUATTROCCHI KWOK ARCHITECTS the Educational Program 636 Fifth St. Santa Rosa, CA 95404 P: 707.576.0829 www.qka.com y b d e r i p Ins education The post Industrial Revolution model for schools organized classrooms much like an assembly line with little interaction between teachers and their curriculum. With increasing school size and the need for complex critical thinking skills, students were becoming alienated. The assumption that all students learned in the same way and at the same pace simply failed. New models were developed that incorporated new learning and teaching strategies, including: • Learner Centered versus Teacher Centered Classrooms • Teachers as Facilitators • Teachers that collaborate to teach across the curriculum and make learning more meaningful • Learning that is thematic and less generic Architects must now create schools that support teachers and students in collaborative curriculum driven design. Quattrocchi Kwok Architects has established a reputation for design that is highly responsive to each school’s Educational Program. Leading a collaborative design process, QKA works with faculty, parents, students and administration to create a campus that supports the school’s teaching methodologies. Our design process restates Educational Program objectives in terms of facility needs, amenities and adjacencies. Inspired by community As an example Quattrocchi Kwok Architects designed Heritage High School in Brentwood, California. In support of the District’s vision of “Collaborative Leadership & Professional Learning Communities”, the Small Learning Communities (SLC) and Academies provide smaller campus units – in which anonymity is no longer acceptable. The Educational Program encourages teachers to spend more time with fewer students, allowing them to better advocate for students and monitor progress. The design of these communities support collaboration, professionalism, and teaching across the curriculum in a meaningful way for teachers and students. Heritage High School is just one example of curriculum inspired design by QKA; you can also see this at the schools listed below: Windsor High School, Windsor, CA Windsor Middle School, Windsor, CA Anzar High School, San Juan Bautista, CA The academies provide specialized thematic buildings with spaces tailored to the academies’ curriculum. The design and amenities of these teaching spaces support the teachers in bringing technology, specialized equipment and labs to their students. New Technology High School, Napa, CA Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School, Pacifica, CA
