The Houston Musician, Feb/Mar 2013 3 Madam Prez Sez... by Lovie Smith-Wright First, I would like to thank those of you who attended the Annual Meeting; it was so nice to have a quorum and to see so many new faces at the meeting. One member pointed out that it was probably our last meeting in the old building and she did not want to miss it, because 609 Chenevert has a lot of memories for us all to cherish. We are making progress at the new location, we are not sure of the exact move date, but will let everyone know as soon as the move date is determined. Postcards and email blasts will go out to everyone once the date is determined. If you don’t want to miss out on the celebration when we move, you might want to start checking our website periodically to see if we have posted any information about the move. If you have not paid your dues for 2013, please do so; you will go suspended April 1st if you are not paid up by the end of March. Please note that membership dues increased from $136 to $150 per year for regular membership dues and $85 for life membership dues. If you pay on a semi-annual basis, you dues are $75 for half a year and $42.50 if you are a life member. Also if you are paying in March, you need to add an additional $10 late fee to the amount you are paying. Bob McGrew and I recently attended the Western Conference in Portland, Oregon. We were pleased to learn that Paul Frank will be the new Director of Organizing & Education, replacing Janice Galassi, who is retiring. Paul’s presentation to the conference was outstanding; he is doing his best to help freelance musicians get organized. Once we are moved and settled into our new place, we plan to have him come down and meet with our membership to see what we can do to help our freelance musicians move forward in today’s musical environment. Just want to remind everyone that this is your union; you have responsibilities as a member just like the officers who have responsibilities to provide services for the membership. It is your responsibility to pay your dues on time, to make sure your address, phone numbers, email address and other information that enables us to serve you is current and up to date. If you are a leader, you should be filing your contracts before you play a gig, you should make sure that the people you hire are current, and you should be making pension and work dues payments for those you hire. This might be a good time for everyone to take another look at the bylaws that you agreed to uphold and live by when you joined the AFM. You might want to pay special attention to Articles XVII – Rights and Duties of Members and Article XVIII – Contractors; this might help those who have forgotten some of the rules and responsibilities in being a member of Local 65-699. And... lastly, while you are reading the bylaws, please pay close attention to Article XXI. - Benevolent Funds. Those funds are there to help you, the member, as long as you are in good standing and meet the conditions as set forth for each fund. All one has to do is contact me or Sec-Treasurer McGrew, and we will help you in whatever way that we can. Madam Prez [email protected] 4 www.afmhouston.com Bob’s Flotsam and jetsam by Bob McGrew END OF AN ERA In 1980 I came to work for the Musician’s Credit Union because the Manager was leaving and I had served on the Board up to that time. It was my first real day gig and I was excited to have a gig that wouldn’t interfere with my nightly band gig. One day a Houston Post (newspaper) reporter showed up and wanted an interview so I commenced to tell her I had no financial background and I was learning the software that was in place. It was really antiquated in that once a week I would transfer a batch of processed transactions to a box that went on the Friday bus to Dallas and would return the following Monday, hopefully. The system worked as long as the bus made the trip! Data was transferred electronically and I would be set for another week with up to date beginning balances. I had been serving on the Union board, due to a vacancy mid-term, and so I was really challenged serving both entities. A field representative from the AFM visited the Local and encouraged me to get more active in the Local and to consider running for office. The current Sec-Treasurer was Don Cannon and his health was failing. I became your Secretary Treasurer some 26 years ago and 609 Chenevert was my home away from home. So here we are just days away from when this home will no longer exist and 5771 Enid will become our new residence. So why the reminiscing? So much has changed with the way we do business. In the many files we need to move or discard are dues notices, work tax documents, recording forms, cases filed with AFM for the many traveling bands and shows, MPTF payrolls, and many other documents not relevant to our membership today. I recall 5 employees and 2 business agents to handle the daily business. Today emails have replaced paper mail, internet has replaced everything and social media and smart phones have almost replaced the desk phones we still have. Now we have one full time employee and two Officers maintaining all the above scenarios with the help of our computer network, internet, and email. What a progressive world we live in! Mostly I miss the Union attitude around here. Now we take gigs for less than the minimum set by the Local, we record with no regard for the future uses of the product, shake hands with dishonest employers and generally stand as independent contractors not practicing the solidarity which we once had. We think social security will prevail, we will perform forever, and the Union is only a club for those who enjoy CBA benefits. Apparently it has to get a lot worse before it gets better! I am so looking forward to this transition and hope you will help make this transition in the spirit of brotherhood and we can work together to increase the awareness of what solidarity can do in these progressive times. Bye, Bye, Chenevert; Hello Enid it’s been grand! The Houston Musician, Feb/Mar 2013 5 Jazz & Poetry As February winds down, so does the Jazz & Poetry series. For more than 30 years, drummer and Founder of Jazz Education, Inc., Bubbha Thomas, has traveled throughout Texas to bring the educational program to more than one million elementary school children. The program, set in story form, spans various styles of popular music ranging from the 1930s to the millennium. Prominent figures in jazz including Stevie Wonder and Louie Armstrong to name a few are highlighted and children are encouraged to participate in various parts of the program. Friday, Feb. 1, the Jazz & Poetry team performed for MacGregor Elementary School near downtown Houston. As promised, they delivered a high-energy performance that included Bassist Anibal Ambert and Poet Gilbert Sedeño, Jr. venturing out into the sea of students, which added to the various interactive techniques developed to produce and inspire each child. The fun and inventive way the Jazz & Poetry team seek to entertain the children really shows their professionalism and their ability to continuously and successfully reach audiences even after so many years. Since Ruth finished studying flute and piano, she has played with the Hawthorne String Quartet; recorded for an independent film; played with the Sandra Organ Dance company and the Brevard Music Festival Orchestra. Throughout her 18 years of studying, she has been fortunate to study in Houston, Boston, and Dallas. Contact Info: 713-660-0922 I [email protected] Kevin Downs Cello I joined Local 65-699 to increase my work opportunities and have access to insurance plans after I decided to move back to Houston from Europe. Kevin’s performances include venues across Europe like the large hall of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with the Dutch new music ensemble, among many others. A special love for chamber music led Kevin to perform at many prestigious music festivals, including the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the Perlman Music Program, and the Banff Centre Chamber Music Residency, among others. There he was mentored by the Tokyo and Juilliard String Quartets, members of the Cleveland String Quartet, and Itzhak Perlman. A passionate teacher with around 15 years of experience, Kevin studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, attended New England Conservatory for his Master’s degree, then studied in Paris at the CRRBoulogne Billancourt with Michel Strauss. After playing professionally in The Hague and various other places, Kevin recently returned to Houston where he now maintains a private teaching studio. While earning his Bachelor of Music Degree in Cello performance at the University of North Texas – Denton, William performed with the Music Paradigm Orchestra, the Chad Willis Jazz Orchestra, and did some freelance work throughout the Metroplex area. As a former member of Local 72-147, William decided to join this Local after returning to Houston to pursue his Master’s degree at the University of Houston. As a pianist, I was ready to take my musicianship to the next level and my membership brings me closer to achieving my goal of working with performing arts venues downtown. Debbie works privately as a music coach for young/ inexperienced vocalists and instrumentalists and works in various performing arts programs throughout Houston. Her gigs are primarily with organizations such as Jersey Village Baptist Church; Second Baptist-Cypress Campus; Foundry United Methodist; Kincaid; HSPVA; and several Cy-Fair ISD middle and high schools. Debbie feels fortunate to have played with the Masquerade Theatre, the Curtis Braly Band, with numerous other area theatre companies and in more than 25 musicals. The Houston Musician, Feb/Mar 2013 11 Remembering Herb Brochstein Our friend, Irvin “Herb” Brochstein passed away January 16, 2013. A native Houstonian, Herb opened his first teaching studio in the front room of his house on Chenevert Street. Soon after, he turned the studio into a full-line music store, named Brochstein Music, where he sold instruments to every school district within a 300-mile radius of Houston. He even sold his very own personal drumset to Elvis, later seen on the Ed Sullivan Show, and in movies like Jailhouse Rock and Forrest Gump. He continued to teach during the day and played big band jazz every night. Herb played drums with Ed Gerlach’s band and soon formed his own big band, The Gulf Coast Giants of Jazz. One day, a traveling salesman sold Herb a handmade pair of drumsticks. The minute he used them, he knew he’d found something special. After exhaustive research, he learned the drumsticks were from Japan. When he met a man named Tat Kosaka, Pro-Mark was born. Sealed with a handshake, their 55-year relationship grew into the world’s largest drumstick company. The drumsticks, which resembled fine furniture, were sold in more than 110 countries worldwide. A highly-respected pioneer, Herb will always be remembered and loved by musicians and music industry associates worldwide. His knowledge and his Pro-Mark drumsticks were sought out by the famous and not-yet-famous alike. He knew all the greats, and they knew him: Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Joe Morello and Ed Shaunessy to name a few. If you would like to make a donation, the family requests donations be made to the Houston Humane Society. Respectfully Yours, Bob McGrew Secretary/Treasurer The Houston Musician, Feb/Mar 2013 13 A First Look at 5771 ENID ST. Renovations are in progress at our new home on Enid Street, and we wanted to share more information with those of you who were unable to attend the Annual Meeting earlier in February. As many may know, our current home at 609 Chenevert was declared ‘imminent domain’ by the City of Houston, and we are required to move as this property is now the City’s property. Our new facility is a 5,100 sq. ft. space that will house our credit union, one small practice room, a separate break area and rehearsal hall. For those rare yet beautiful Houston spring days, we have a courtyard behind the building where we plan to have many union events and barbeques (photo 2). To view more photos of the inside of the building, visit our website. We’ll be tracking the progress and will do our best to keep you updated! To provide a more detailed and potentially easier explanation, we have included a blueprint of the building below with labels to each area. 7 4 2 3 5 6 5 5 8 Federal Credit Union 7 9 9 2 Front of 5771 Enid St. 5 Board Room Reception Area Main Entrance 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 = = = = = = = = = Rehearsal Space Storage Closet Practice Room Pool Table / Break Area Restrooms Mechanical Room Credit Union Office Mini-Conference Room Union Executive Offices 1 Courtyard A note from Lovie: Please check the local’s website often for information regarding the move of Local 65-699 to its’ new location. As we get closer to a possible move date, we will post it on the website as well as by snail mail.
