Sure, the tradeshow is known for its high value and excellent networking opportunities. What distinguishes Traders Market is its focus on the lumber and building material supply chain. Unlike most other shows geared towards the industry, Traders Market focuses on the lumber supply chain, not machinery or services. Exhibitors are manufacturers. Attendees are buyers. Simple as that. No ® other lumber trade show provides such a et k ar ers M platform for the sale of lumber and relatNAWLA T rad ed products. If you are part of the supply 10 0 2 , -5 3 v. o N chain, you need to be at Traders Market. cy “NAWLA created Traders Market 15 Hyatt Regen years ago to bring together buyers and is o n li Il , o sellers. It worked. We’ll never know Chicag how many millions of dollars in sales have resulted from Traders Market,” said Gary Vitale, NAWLA President. “The value of having so many potential business partners in one place is even more important in today’s economy. Yet we still have made improvements to add more value.” Many of the changes this year are designed to broaden the appeal up and down the distribution channels. Producers can market in the New Product Showcase. Importers and exporters can hear about emerging markets and products. And architects will learn about the use of wood in sustainable design. As always, the wholesalers remain the essential link in this supply chain. The center of the tradeshow floor this year will include the New Product Showcase. For the first time, manufacturers and wholesalers will have a dedicated area outside the booths to highlight new or rebranding products. Traders Market attendees will have the opportunity to learn about them before they hit the market. That’s always the mantra of the trade show industry and we have found that for us The NAWLA Traders Market® is a great opportunity for a company to expand its buying power and gather industry knowledge, all within a few days at one location. A computer system is set to control the conditions in the greenhouse and provide information about its growing environment. Seedlings are grown in the greenhouse for 3-4 months and the rest of their growth occurs in outdoor holding areas. In total, a seedling remains at our nursery for 9 to 16 months (depending on species and whether or not they are overwintered). When trees are overwintered, snowmaking equipment is used to ensure the seedlings are underneath an insulating blanket of snow. During the planting season, (April to mid- September) a fleet of specially equipped truck and trailer units deliver over 500,000 seedlings per day to the planting sites in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Maine. The empty containers and pallets are returned to the nursery for reuse. Since 1957, we have planted approximately 800 million trees - A NATIONAL RECORD! J.D. Irving, Limited began its White Pine silviculture program in the early 1990’s and shortly after began a tree improvement program based on selection of the tallest, most high quality White Pine trees found in the natural forests across the region. Each of the selected trees was grafted in the same way that popular fruit tree varieties are produced. A number of grafts from each selection are planted at our Parkindale Seed Orchard and are carefully tended to produce lots of cones. Because the grafts come from mature trees, they begin to produce cones when they are only 3 to 6 feet tall. The cones are harvested in the fall and the seed is extracted for use in our tree nurseries to produce fast growing, straight and healthy seedlings for future White Pine forests. WRC producers have certainly not been insulated from the current demand slump and in fact are faced with the additional threat to market share from growth of non-wood substitutes. During this difficult market period it is only prudent for companies to closely examine cost structure and trim expenditures wherever possible. One cost area that is often debated is marketing and promotion. Those who are members of the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA) believe that the only way to return to a healthier business environment is to invest in it. These industry leaders recognize the need to invest in programs that ensure the market is properly educated about the practical and environmental benefits of the species, provide technical services to ensure the right products are specified for the right job and that they are installed and finished properly. In addition, WRCLA members invest to address myths perpetrated by non-wood substitutes and inspire architects, builders and consumers to choose Western Red Cedar for their next project. Moreover, they support programs that provide extensive resources to you, the distributor and retailer, to help you sell more Western Red Cedar. Why do they do it? They do it because they believe that their success is tied to your success and are committed to helping you capture more sales. In today’s highly competitive environment, WRCLA members believe that this level of commitment and the value provided will differentiate their supply, and at a minimum afford them first opportunity to earn your business. The WRCLA’s promotional activities are, by now, well know but at times misunderstood. For example some believe programs are solely directed at the architect, designer community profiling spectacular WRC design applications but unattainable by most. While WRCLA programs do include elements such as inspirational advertising targeted at the key decision makers, by far the largest percentage of the efforts are dedicated to promoting projects and grades that are more commonly available and affordable to a relatively large segment of the population. The WRCLA’s campaign makes use of a combination of print, online, radio and television mediums to provide information about Western Red Cedar to a broad consumer audience of more than 85 million people in the US. That said, the architect community, particularly in the non-residential secWestern Red Cedar on the flagship Columbia Sportswear store in Seattle. tor represents an important audience for growth. Recently the WRCLA’s promotion of Western Red Cedar was expanded to include light commercial. An example of the success of this was the use of knotty Western Red Cedar on the flagship Columbia Sportswear store in Seattle. More and more architects are looking for natural, sustainable materials that enhance the beauty and overall aesthetics of their commercial projects; Western Red Cedar is the perfect fit. One of the most exciting components of WRCLA’s effort has been the promotion of Western Red Cedar’s environmental credentials. While Cedar’s environmental superiority is well known to those of us in the industry historically we have not done an effective job at getting the message out. Last year we wrote about the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) research work that the WRCLA completed on siding and decking. That study provided clear and credible verification of the Western Red Cedar’s environmental superiority when compared with manmade materials regardless of “recycled” content. This year, the WRCLA has taken its “green” message on the road, well at least figuratively. We engaged the services of respected green building expert John Wagner to deliver the message via a “Satellite Media Tour”. John was featured on 197 TV stations and another 832 stories ran on websites of news outlets around the country. In total, more that 8 million viewers learned why Western Red Cedar is the ultimate green building material. We would encourage you to visit our website or better yet, join us for the WRCLA Friday morning session at NAWLA’s Traders Market. We will have an update on the program including new initiatives exclusive to WRCLA members and their customers. In addition John Wagner will be speaking about the green building movement. Before closing I would like to reinforce an important point made earlier: Given the new market reality, it is imperative Western Red Cedar industry players unite in the promotional and educational effort to counter the non-wood threat. To be effective this means the active participation of suppliers by finding these initiatives and with the visible support of buyers whose business relies on these Director, WRCLA Jack Draper resources. We ask that you recognize supplier commitment by purchasing Real Cedar from Western Red Cedar Lumber Association members.
