Activity Gathering Drum Title Comments Kangaroos, from Carnival of the Animals Kangaroos, from Carnival of the Animals: Find different ways to play the drum in response to the music. Suggest jumping kangaroos who stop to look around and have a big smile at the end. Go Round and Round the Village (New) Go Round and Round the Village: • “Go round and round the village …”: Make circles on the drum. • “Go in and out the window …”: Slide arms towards center of drum and What’s Needed Gathering Drum Track [Track] back. Slow down when you sing “in” and wait until all kids have their hands in the center and then quickly sing “out the window” while moving your hands back. • “Let’s march around the village …”: Alternate hands to keep the beat on the drum. • Repeat “go in and out the window …”: Slide arms towards center of drum and back. It’s their favorite verse. • Create other verses for the drum or movement verses like “let’s jump around the village,” “let’s spin around the village,” etc. Tideo (Ukulele) Tideo: Keep the beat on the drum while singing hello. Parents take turns holding the ukulele, fingering the C chord while everyone sings each child’s name for the hello song. Remind the children to use their pointer finger to strum the ukulele. Come Out/ Ten Fish in the Sea (New) Come Out/Ten Fish in the Sea—Solo Singing: • Hide fish or ocean finger puppets/pictures in a fun bag or basket. • Have each child sing “out” or “come out” (they should know this from the “Little Clown” activity) to receive a little fish puppet to use for the song. Guitar/Ukulele Track Fish/Ocean Finger Puppets • Sing the chorus with everyone keeping the steady beat on the drum. • Practice each verse before using the recording. -- Verse 1: Children move (jump) their fish up high on “high” -- Verse 2: Make circles on the drum -- Verse 3: Hide the animals behind or under the drum on “low” • Play and sing with the recording. Sing goodbye (from the Hello Echo Song) to the little fish as we put them away. Drum Boat (turn drum) Row Your Boat Push the boat to the beat. Encourage the toddlers to sing the last word of every phrase. Gathering Drum Movement Three Times Around Went Our Little Ship (New) • This activity is preparation for the parachute next week. • Practice first without the recording. • Section A: March in a circle until “sank to the bottom of the sea;” then Track wiggle to the ground. • Section B: Encourage children to tap the beat on the carpet and parents to tap the beat on their children. (The music is repeated until all have the hearts.) My Valentine My Valentine: • Remind everyone they will hear a string instrument group playing when the little hearts should dance. • Practice without the recording first. • Review that these are dancing hearts and they follow the direction of the Track Mailbox/ bag with Felt Hearts Track (String Instrument Pictures) notes in the song. When the notes go up high, the hearts dance high. • Sing the song and move the heart following the melodic direction for “valentine, valentine.” Point this out to the parents! • On “I love you,” tell them to stick their heart on the adult that brought them and the adult can stick their heart on the child. • Show the children pictures of the string instruments, naming each one. • Repeat the activity with the recording. Instrument Kit Bells I’ll Be There (SM Piano) I’ll Be There: The piano music is repeated until all the hearts are put away. Track Family Tree (SM Piano) Family Tree: Ask everyone to dance and shake any way they like to the piano music. Explain that we have parents who have never played piano before who are now enjoying learning how to play these songs from our classes. Bells Track The Fire Truck The Fire Truck: • Practice shaking the fire bell and encourage everyone to sing the Track descending scale for “ding, ding, ding, ding, ding” before singing the song with the recording. • Dramatize the actions! Pretend to drive the truck, turn the steering wheel, find the fire, climb the ladder and squirt the water. • For the last verse, yawn and lie down on the floor, pretending to nap. TIP: We practice playing the bell only on “ding,” but it’s okay if they play the bell throughout the song. Ask parents to take turns playing the ukulele using the C chord or switching from C to Am. Parent Tip: In our weekly lessons, the children see the parents as music makers by your singing and playing. The children learn from observing and imitating. Ask the parents to hold a handle of the parachute to make a circle. Explain that some of the children might like to go under the parachute and others will enjoy holding a parachute handle or their parent’s hand. Three Times Around Went Our Little Ship Three Times Around: The song is repeated from last week, but using the parachute is new. • Practice first without the recording. • Section A: March in a circle until “sank to the bottom of the sea.” Lower Gathering Drum Ukulele Parachute Track the parachute. The children can hide underneath as if under the water. Parents can hold onto the parachute and also hide underneath it. • Section B: Tap the beat on the children until “up floats me.” Slowly rise again. Repeat. Sailing (New) Sailing: • The children can go under the parachute or walk along side their parent Track as the teacher leads different ways we can move with the parachute to imitate the music. Change movement only at the end of the phrases. Prepare them to listen for the jumping fish and raise the parachute quickly when you hear the ascending glissandos. Shake and Stop Shake and Stop: Many young children enjoy sitting on the parachute as the adults shake and stop. Others may prefer to sit next to the parent and help shake or observe. [Track] TIP: You may need to adjust the parachute activities if toddlers are very young and are frightened or need to be carried. Encourage everyone to sing what they want for breakfast. Then sing, “we’re having sausages!” • Before saying the whole rhyme, practice the sizzle sound by scraping the smooth stick over the ribbed one. Practice tapping once for “pop!” and hitting on floor for “bam!” • Perform entire rhyme using the above playing techniques. The Syncopated Clock: TIP: Listen carefully for the different sections before teaching the song. • Present a picture of a cuckoo clock. Explain that we will tap our sticks to make the clock’s tick-tock sound. In the middle of the song, we will hear a part where the little bird comes out and flies around the room. • Section A: Ask them to listen for the ticking sound of the clock and tap very steadily so we keep good time. You can tap the sticks together, and then tap them on the floor. • Section A1: Scrape/scratch the sticks. • Section B: Pretend to fly like little birds through the room while singing “fly away, fly away; little bird wants to play” to the melody of the B section. Snuggle Time IF TIME Stars/ Star Light End with a lullaby or familiar song; the class can listen or sing along.
