It assesses the rate of degradation of the bearing, allowing appropriate corrective action to be taken, thus avoiding consequential damage, costly unplanned repairs and loss of revenue. It avoids unnecessary opening of engines and bearings and therefore minimises the exposure of key personnel to potentially hazardous situations, offering a safer working environment. The XTS-W uses custom proximity sensors to measure the relative position of each guide shoe, at Bottom Dead Centre (BDC), with respect to the crankcase. Any significant wear in the bearing surfaces results in a shift in this measurement, thus facilitating early detection of a failure. Sea trials A sea trial during 2004 on a container vessel driven by a 7 cylinder engine (7S50MC) backed up the engine test bed findings.
