June 2015 - St. John Lutheran Church Joliet
Sharing the Love of Christ The Messenger June 2015, Vol. 7, Issue 6 Let the summer begin: Vacations, picnics, ball games, gardening, swimming, boating, camping, visiting, hanging out on the porch, thunderstorms, late sunsets, lightning bugs, the sound of crickets, and worship. Worship? Summer is for worship? Could we get so busy enjoying the abundant gifts of God that flourish in the summer that we take time off from connecting directly with God in worship? I hope not. Would we take time off from eating because we are too busy enjoying all that summer offers? Would we neglect our friends and family because the weather is too nice? Would we want to enjoy summer’s plentiful gifts and forget to thank the giver of it all? We worship to be fed. We worship to be together with the people of God. We worship to offer thanks and praise. We worship to welcome strangers and new friends. We worship to be strengthened to serve. We worship because it is how we are made to be. We worship to remember we are a WE in a world that suggests that it is all about me. Summer is a time for re-creation, and relaxation. If summer worship offers neither, then perhaps it’s a good idea to miss it. For that matter, if we are not renewed and recreated by worship then we ought not want to worship at all in any season. But I am prejudiced, that is I have a pre-judged attitude that the reason God calls us to worship is to deliver something vital that we will find nowhere else. I am especially excited about this summer’s worship to see how we experience together the faith stories which will be shared each week as we hear a new story about the “Circle of Life” from one of our own members. It will not be dull. It will be verdant and abundant just like summer ought to be. It is summer again. Hail to the cookout and hail to the Lord’s Supper too. St. John members recall moments that celebrate all of life’s stages. Date: May 30-31 June 6-7 June 13-14 June 20-21 June 27-28 July 4-5 July 11-12 July 18-19 July 25-26 August 1-2 August 8-9 Story Theme: Kick off weekend Birth Childhood Fatherhood Teen Years Bye Week Motherhood Family Life Grandparents Golden Years Celebration Weekend If you are out of town and miss a week, you can always view the weekly speaker. Our video collection is online at stjohngiving.org. Summer Faith Series, Birth Eileen Mikos, June 6-7 The first story of our series celebrates the beginning of life, birth. Eileen Mikos shares the story of her daughter, Grace. Hear Eileen's moving story about baby Grace's miraculous journey revealing a premie who refused to give up, and the parents who wouldn't let go. See just how fragile life is from that first breath we take. Summer Faith Series, Childhood Kidz Camp Sings, June 13-14 After we learn to crawl and toddle, there's a lot of fun to be had playing in mud, wrestling with the dog, and enjoying all of the magic childhood has to offer. For many of us, childhood summers include family togetherness, no school, and of course, Vacation Bible School, better known as Kidz Camp at St. John. Listen with your ears, and your heart, as our children put their faith into song. Summer Faith Series, Fatherhood Andy Brawthen, June 20-21 On Father's Day weekend, Andy Brawthen shares his unique fatherhood story of faith. We go inside the Brawthen home and join the family during lunchtime as Andy tells us how his faith guides him as he parents two young girls. Summer Faith Series, Teen Years Ben Covault, June 26-27 Ahhh, the days when weknew everything! Our biggest worry was who to hang out with, what to wear, and how to do our hair. Today, tweens and teens have tablets and gadgets to keep them "plugged in" to a world that is infinitely smaller than any other time in history. Thirteen year-old Ben Covault tells us how he unplugs and uses baseball as a metaphor for his faith. Summer Worship Hours Summer gives many of us a chance to slow down our pace and enjoy a little more down time. We are now on our summer worship schedule: Saturdays 5:30 p.m. Sundays 8:30 a.m. 10:15 a.m. Join us for fellowship between services! The last day of summer worship hours is on August 9th. The regular Sunday 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship schedule resumes on August 16th. 3 The Stones Cry Out “In June, as many as a dozen species Voices of Palestinian Christians A film by Yasmine Perni may burst their Wednesday, June 17th, 6:30 pm Join us to hear a new perspective from Christians living in the Holy Land. If you call your mother at work thirteen times an hour, she can hurt you.” ~Erma Bombeck Are you ready to take the next step in your growth as a Christian and in your service to your congregation and community? If so, you are looking for diakonia™! The next series of courses will meet on Tuesdays, beginning September 1, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church. Information Meeting Scheduled Find out more about diakonia™ and bring your questions: Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. Trinity Room RSVP (or send queries) to Trenton Ferro, Location Manager, [email protected] or (724) 762-0305. What is the diakonia™ program? diakonia™ is a two-year process of spiritual formation and theological education for baptized members of the Lutheran Church. This process occurs in three basic ways: By thorough grounding in the classic seminary disciplines of practical, systematic, historical, and Biblical theology; By identifying particular skills and aptitudes in ministry and encouraging their use in the local parish and community; and By providing spiritual growth through worship, retreats, and a supportive community of fellow students, pastor-mentors, and instructors. These are the tools diakonia™ uses to help equip God’s people for service in parish and neighborhood ministries. The primary theme and focus of the diakonia™ experience is the word of Jesus in scripture: “Let the one who would be great among you be your servant [Greek: diakonos]” (Mark 10:4). - Trenton Ferro Summer is here… Time to Read! What happens when it's the pastor who has a crisis of faith? It's Sat. night and Pr. George McKenna of Memorial Presbyterian Church could not find a new angle for the Good Samaritan story for his sermon. He finally decided to be "lead by the Spirit" on Sunday morning. As soon as his sermon was over, Laura Templeton, a wealthy widow, rushed out of the church. Had he offended her? No. Laura had been so moved she decided to immediately find and offer a home to the homeless man she'd ignored on her way to church. Everyone was horrified when they found out. "Pastor, DO something!" He tried, but within a week Laura was found shot to death in her own home and the stranger had disappeared. Pr. McKenna felt responsible and his life spun out of control. He went through a pretty tough time before he finally understood what Laura had told him, "You have to take chances if you want to follow Christ." Eventually, he recovers and comes back all the stronger for it. He was very excited about sharing this new understanding with his congregation! Thought I "knew" how this book would end - very predictable... WRONG, again. Good read, thoroughly enjoyed it. Reviewed by Margaret Holzrichter, SJLC Library Committee benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by.” ~Jeannette Walls 6 “Then followed that beautiful season... Summer... Quilters of St. John The quilters of St. John’s have been working very hard this year even though a few sessions had to be cancelled because of the wonderful winter weather we had. As of now, there are around 140 quilts finished and hopefully we will have 200 as we did last year. These quilts will be ready to be shipped in October in order for them to reach the people in need. The quilters want to thank the people who have recently given them a great deal of materials that will be used for the tops and bottoms of quilts and for the batting that will be used as inserts. Without the generosity of so many people, these quilts would not be made and refugees would not be able to snuggle up in these fine quilts when their nights become cold. Thanks to all who donated!! Get to know us... The Memorial Committee The Memorial Committee of St. John Church is a little known committee which meets six times a year to oversee the monies given in memory of loved ones. Occasionally we receive a gift to honor a person(s) on their birthday or special occasion. We recently have used the gifts to provide the stainless flatware for our kitchens, and helped with the cost of the sound board in the sanctuary. We often honor requests from our Education Committee for supplies for their program. Currently we are in need of more members. This is a low key committee, but active. The meetings are on the first Tuesday on the odd numbered months. “Ocean: A body of water occupying two-thirds of a world made for man — who has no gills.“ ~Ambrose Bierce 8 “The first wildflower of the year is like land after sea.” ~Thomas Wentworth Higginson Kidz Camp June 7th - 11th 5:45 - 8:15 p.m. Ages: 4 - 12 years old Register at: https://www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/hl/ stjohnjoliet Adults and High School kids – Small group helpers are needed! Holy Land Adventure and Nazareth Market Place makes the Bible come alive! We will be meeting Mary, Jesus’ mom, who tells stories about her special child. We will also hear from other people who may have lived and worked in Nazareth during Jesus’ time, too. People sang songs, made things with their hands, grew their own food to sell in the marketplace, and of course, they played games, too! Below are snapshots of Kidz Camp from previous years. 9 FEMA visits St. John with an “ARE YOU READY PLAN” On Tuesday, April 28th Greg Sebben, the Emergency Management Director for the City of Joliet, came to St. John to make a presentation about weather emergencies. His presentation centered on “What to be aware of and how to be prepared for possible disasters. He discussed what to look for, where to go, and how to prepare for Nature’s Most Violent Storms. We would like to share some of this information with you in a series of articles over the next few months. Topic 1– “Are You Ready” (June Newsletter) Topic 2 – Thunderstorms – Why worry about them? (July Newsletter) Topic 3 – Tornadoes – Be Ready Year Round/ Facts and Fiction (August Newsletter) St. John safety area-Karen Johnson Hall (area away from windows and door), and other rooms without windows such as the bathrooms and the sacristy for a smaller number of people. Topic 4 - Lightening – Facts and Fiction (September) If a big storm is coming “Are You Ready”. Some disasters strike without any warning. Have you thought about those supplies you’ll need the most? They will usually be the hardest to come by. Enlist your children to help gather supplies for your family’s emergency kit. It’ll bring you a sense of relief, and your kids a feeling of empowerment. Consider having a kit at home, and a smaller portable kit in the car or your workplace. Be Prepared, It’s up to you! Each year, many people are killed or seriously injured by tornadoes and severe thunderstorms despite advanced warning. If you hear a warning or observe threatening skies only YOU can make the decision to seek safety. This could be the most important decision you will ever make. “He that will learn to pray, let him go to sea.” ~George Herbert 10 2,368 - Clients served in April Will Walk for Food!
