About The Kingdom of Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands with a land mass of just over 273 sq.
miles. Bahrain packs a lot of attractions into a relatively small space. Ancient archaeological
sites, museums, traditional and modern Islamic art are all easily accessible, as are glitzy malls,
boutique shops, spas, resorts and a wide range of international hotels. Beach and water enthusiasts will find plenty to occupy their time, as will sports lovers with golf, horse racing and the
Bahrain Grand Prix all at hand.
Tourism
Bahrain’s government supports and invests in the nation’s growing tourism industry. More than
six million tourists visit Bahrain each year the majority of which come from neighbouring Saudi
Arabia and other Gulf/Arab States. Bahrain is also a popular destination for westerners and
visitors from Asia. Special importance is given to cruise traffic into Bahrain and with this in mind
a dedicated cruise terminal building was commissioned to welcome cruise guests.
A rich history
With evidence of human civilization dating back some 6000 years, archaeology, culture and
history buffs will find in Bahrain a trove of attractions. The fabled tree of life, a 400-year old
mystique tree stands out as a testament to the adaptability and perseverance of life in the harsh
Bahraini desert.
Tens of thousands of ancient burial mounds, an estimated 170,000 grave sites and various
artifacts are attestations to the success and sophistication of the 6,000 year old Dilmun civilization. Dilmun prospered as a nexus of a trade network that linked the civilizations of Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.
In the royal tombs at A’ali and Saar, archaeologists have discovered vases and jars from Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley, as well as carnelian jewels and copper/bronze objects. In addition
to these the Bahrain National Museum exhibits artifacts dating back some 6000 years.
In a region where water makes a difference between life and death, Bahrain’s natural supply of
freshwater only heightened its strategic importance. Babylonians, Sumerians, Greeks,
Persians, Portuguese and Turks occupied Bahrain until 1783, when the Al Khalifa family
arrived. They have served Bahrain ever since, with His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa
ruling the country today.
Native rulers and foreign occupiers left numerous examples of their presence, including a
number of castles and fortifications. One notable example is Bahrain Fort which has been listed
as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Undersea freshwater springs are thought to account for the fine and unique luster of Bahraini
pearls which drove the economy prior to the discovery of oil in 1932. In a new development the
government is trying to revive pearling and associated craft industries. A special UNESCO
backed pearling pathway is being created by the Tourism Ministry to recreate its pearling
heritage.

Bahrain today
The Kingdom of Bahrain has transformed itself in more ways than one. Today, Bahrain is a
bustling, vibrant modern state with great infrastructure, every possible modern amenity and a
large well- educated population. It enjoys Democracy with two houses of Parliament and the
vision of great leaders well equipped to usher it into the 21st Century. Bahrain also enjoys
excellent close relations with its neighbours Saudi Arabia and GCC countries. Throughout
this transformation it has retained great values, secular freedoms and the preservation of
Arabic and Islamic culture.
A Bright future
Bahrain is a free open economy enjoying trade with its GCC neighbours as well as with the rest
of the world. It is distinctively ranked among the world’s top 20 countries in this sector. It is
uniquely structured to enjoy both old and new all at the same time. We have ancient history
dating back 5000 years with Forts, Mosques, Burial Mounds, World Heritage Sites and a 200
year old Hindu temple.
Bahrain boasts a long list of firsts in the Gulf. Some of them are: first to discover oil, first
international flight, first boys and girls schools, first newspaper, telegraph and first radio
station. More recently, it was the first state to ensure women’s rights to vote and is home of
the first Formula One Racing Track in the Middle East.
Bahrain is a moderate state and with a diverse population that coexists naturally, having done
so for centuries. Different races, religions and ethnicities abound and are accepted. Churches, synagogues, and temples reside alongside mosques catering to the needs of its people.
Bahrainis are proud people who actively contribute towards nation building. It now enjoys a
large well educated local workforce comprising Ministers (including Women), Doctors,
Engineers, Educators, Bankers and Legislators. It has diversified wisely into Aluminium, Ship
Building/Repairing, trading between GCC States, Banking and Finance sectors. It also hosts
exhibitions and is a very popular tourist destination, attracting not only immediate neighbours
but also cruise tourists – some 60,000 annually.
It is also being promoted as “Business Friendly Bahrain” resulting in a host of multi-nationals
setting up factories here. Whether for business or pleasure, no visit to the Gulf is complete
without visiting the Kingdom of Bahrain. It stands not to compete with any of the Gulf countries for tourist business but in fact uniquely compliments each and every Gulf country.
The Kingdom of Bahrain is a tiny island nation with an Ancient/Modern twist that is good: both
for business and pleasure.

Bahrain Grand Tour
This tour is unique in that it offers the possibility of encompassing almost all that our small beautiful country has to offer in just one day.
The tour starts with a visit to the Al Fateh Grand Mosque. It is one of the largest mosques in
the world accommodating up to 7000 worshippers. To be admired is the impressively built
domed structure made of pure fiberglass and weighing over 60 tons. It is named after Ahmed
Al Fateh, the conqueror of Bahrain and is blessed with tranquility reserved for the holiest of holy
places. As such it is a spectacular tourist attraction.
Our next stop is the Bahrain National Museum built in 1988. This US$ 34 million complex
offers a comprehensive view of Bahrain through the ages with a rich collection of ancient archaeological artifacts that cover 6000 years of history. Arguably the most interesting of the exhibits
spread between nine halls is a reconstructed ancient burial mound dating to around 2800 BC.
The mound was actually uprooted from its original place and carefully reassembled in the
museum. Other fascinating exhibits depict life in the Dilmun era,19-20th century pearl-diving
scenes as well as community life of Bahrain.
Next we visit Capital Mall opened in 2007. This project is considered one of the Ministry of
Social Development’s most ambitions initiatives. It is original and unique to our region and aims
to nurture, develop, and integrate micro-projects started by Bahraini families into the national
economy. The mall also provides locations for these families to display and market their
products. Thus helping them grow their business and attract tourism.
Our next destination is the Bahrain Fort. Historically, this is one of Bahrain’ most important sites.
The fort itself was built in the 14th century by the Portuguese but excavations at the site reveal
six other distinct eras of the place dating back to the Dilmun era, or around 3000BC during which
time it may have been the island‘s capital. The Fort was recently declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
Later we visit a privately owned Camel Farm at Janabiya. This is great for people whose only
contact with camels has been at a zoo or on television. Keep your cameras ready to snap up
several hundred camels busy chewing or dazzling you with curiosity. You can almost touch
them. On your lucky day you can see a baby camel possibly a few hours or days old.
From here we drive to the Bahrain/Saudi causeway also known as the King Fahad Causeway.
This is a great modern bridge, 26 kilometers long, completed in 1986 and built at a cost of over
US$1 billion. It is one of the worlds longest bridges between two countries. One cannot pass
through the check post into Saudi Arabia but you can enjoy a view across both countries from
the restaurant tower and also enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

Once we end our trip here we stop for a while to view our Royal Arabian Camels at a private
Camel farm in the village of Janabiya. These ships of the desert are kept in close to normal conditions to maintain their genetic makeup. This is truly a unique experience and you will enjoy
looking at over 200 camels of various ages as opposed to a pair in a Zoo. There is a special enclosure for new born baby camels and they are a joy to see.
Next we stop at the Bahrain International Circuit. It boasts one of the best Formula One racing
tracks in the world. This 180 million dollar facility is a perfect example of traditional design and an
ultra modern track. It offers a unique range of facilities that are different not only to the middle east
but to the world at large. You will visit the VIP Tower which offers a 360 degree panoramic view
of the circuit. You will then visit the Media Centre which until recently was the biggest in the world.
If there is no event at the BIC you might get a chance to see the state of the art Control Room

Bahrain Black Gold & Camel Tour
This half day tour introduces you to both the natural wonders of the desert black gold and the
ship of the desert the wonderful camel. It offers an insight into the region’s oil history.
First venture to the Jabal Al Dukhan, a peak located approximately 50 minutes away from the
pier. Dubbed the Mountain of Smoke, Jabal Al Dukhan rises to an elevation of 450 feet, making
it the highest point on the island. Its name comes for the misty haze that often surrounds the
mountain on a hot, humid day.
From here, travel to the First Oil Well, which as the name suggests is the first oil well in the
Arabian Gulf. Black gold first spurted from this well on October 16, 1931. The initial flow being
at the rate of 400 barrels per hour and is situated near the Jabal Al Dukhan. Nearby is the Oil
Museum. The Oil museum was officially inaugurated in 1992 and is dedicated to Bahrain’s
recorded history of oil.
You then proceed to the Tree of Life (TOL). If oil is the liquid that fuels the areas economy,
water is the liquid that nourished the areas plant life – except seemingly for the Tree of Life. A
400 year old mystique tree that stands alone in the desert, surviving in a place completely void
of water. This tree is a natural wonder to the inhabitants of Bahrain. This is a must-see for all
visitors to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Next we visit the Janabiya Camel Farm where you will get a glimpse of the Royal Camels
which are kept in close to normal conditions to maintain their genetic makeup. This is a popular
photo shoot location.

Arabian Culture, Cuisine & Music
This tour is a must for people who want to understand and appreciate true Arabian culture &
cuisine.
You first visit the Bahrain National Museum built in 1988. This US$ 34 million complex offers a
comprehensive view of Bahrain through the ages with a rich collection of ancient archaeological
artifacts that cover 6000 years of history. Arguably the most interesting of the exhibits spread

was actually uprooted from its original place and carefully reassembled in the museum. Other
fascinating exhibits depict life in the Dilmun era,19-20th century pearl-diving scenes as well as
community life of Bahrain.
Next you proceed to Manama Souk which is an old bazaar in Bahrain’s capital. This is a traditional middle eastern souk located in the heart of the city. The designs, layouts and simple structures
date back to the 19th century. The souk with its labyrinthine lanes and alleys is best explored on
foot. You can find everything from clothes to spices, antiques, gifts for family/friends and traditional medicines at reasonable prices.
Next we visit a privately owned Camel Farm in Janabiya. This is great for people whose only
contact with camels has been at a zoo or on television. Keep your cameras ready to snap up
several hundred camels busy chewing or dazzling you with curiosity. You can almost touch them.
On your lucky day you can see a baby camel possibly a few hours or days old.
Our next stop is adjacent to Sheikh Isa Bin Ali House which was the residence of a pearl
merchant. It is called the Siyadi House. This is one of the most impressive examples of a 19th
century building. Built by the pearl-merchant Ahmed Bin Qassem Siyadi. It has many fine
features to look at including ornate ceilings, stained-glass windows, carved screens and a large
safe set into the wall of a small upper reception room.
Next you proceed to Amwaj Island’s Dragon Hotel. Here against a lovely setting of the sea/Lagoon you will be greeted with a non-alcoholic welcome drink. As you settle down to soak in the
sun on the deck and enjoy the beauty of the lagoon, soft Arabic music of the Bahraini Aoud player
(a guitar like instrument) fills the atmosphere. Then its time to sample an array of typical Arabic
starters (mezza), with mouth-watering kebabs & grills accompanied with a glass of white/red wine.
Please do not forget to try the local hamour fish which is a delicacy and a favourite of both locals
and expatriates. No Arabian Adventure is complete without a wonderful display of belly dancing
while you eat and relax. The more adventurous can try hubbly bubbly while relaxing on comfortable cushions and lazy chairs. A truly memorable, fun filled experience.

Next visit the Fish Market which was a major source of employment and income for Bahrainis in
the pre-oil era. This remains an important activity even today. The Manama fish market is a great
place to see the wide variety of fresh fish and shellfish (catch of a day) available from Bahrain’s
waters. It is recommended you wear closed shoes due to water puddles which cannot be avoided. This is a novelty as such markets are hard to come bye in most European cities.
We then proceed to the Fruits & Vegetable Market which was established in 1978. Despite being
a desert nation, Bahrain is agriculturally-gifted with many fertile areas. Thus a variety of fresh
produce such as fruits and vegetables are grown locally in gardens and this is a rarity in this
region.
Our next stop is the Old City of Muharraq which was the country’s capital in the 19th Century. It
still retains much of its charm as an old-world Arab city, with its low-rise buildings, narrow streets,
tiny alleyways and fine historic buildings with their traditional Middle Eastern style of architecture.
The ruling family and many allied families lived in this town. We have arranged a Cooking Class
in one of the old houses which has been turned into a Bahraini authentic cuisine kitchen. Here you
will learn to cook 2-3 different Bahraini dishes. We then proceed for lunch to an old house which
has been converted into a high class boutique restaurant.
Our last stop is the Bahrain National Museum which was built in 1988. This $34 million complex
offers a comprehensive view of Bahrain through the ages. Arguably the most interesting of the
exhibits in nine halls is a reconstructed ancient burial mound dating to around 2800 BC. The
mound was actually plucked from the desert and reassembled in the museum. Other fascinating
exhibits depict life in the Dilmun era, 19-20th century pearl-diving scenes as well as community
life of Bahrain. It is the only museum in the Middle East where all artifacts / items displayed are
from Bahrain, some dating back to 3000 BC.

new ‘Pearling Pathway’ is a tribute to the famous jeweller Jacques Cartier. His journey to Bahrain
in the 1920's to get the best pearls in the world for his exceptional jewellery, forms part of the
story line of the pearling pathway.
"El Bahrain" means two seas. The fresh water springs and the salt water sea surrounding Bahrain
gives the pearls of Bahrain a very special luster and roundness. This two seas feature is unique
to Bahrain and as such was instrumental in ensuring that the Bahraini pearl was the best in the
world. They were much sought after by the House of Cartier and other famous jewellers round
the world.
The entire pearling pathway when finished will be 3.5 km long. It will consist of 17 buildings, 3
oyster beds located in the nearby sea and the seafront of Bu Maher Fort. This Heritage site will
be a wonderful testimony to Bahrain's rich pearling history which dates back to 2000 BC.
You then visit the Old houses of Muharraq, painstakingly renovated by culture lover Shaikha
Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa. It has all the virtual delights of old Arabia with the narrow lanes
and close cluster of houses. You visit the newly renovated Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa
House, Al Kurar House, Iqra Childrens Library and is a real treat for people who love culture.

Bahrain Islamic Tour
This tour is best suited for those who want a greater understanding of Islamic culture and also
for those interested in ancient manuscripts. This tour is ideally centered on the historic Islamic
links of Bahrain.
We start the tour from the Al Fateh Grand Mosque. It is one of the largest mosques in the
world accommodating up to 7000 worshippers. To be admired is the impressively built domed
structure made of pure fiberglass and weighing over 60 tons. It is named after Ahmed Al
Fateh, the conqueror of Bahrain and is blessed with tranquility reserved for the holiest of holy
places. As such it is a spectacular tourist attraction.
You start from the port with a visit to the Bahrain National Museum, which is situated on the

virtual treasure trove of history.
The final destination of this tour is the Bait al Quran. It is a unique museum dedicated solely to
the Holy Book and works of art inspired by it. The museum itself has distinctively Islamic architecture. Many copies of the Quran you’ll see are works of art themselves including an illuminated 12th century Persian masterpiece of a gold-lettered, eight sided 16th century edition. Some
miniature copies of the Quran fit into the palm of the hand and Quranic verses have even been
inscribed on a grain of rice.

From here the tour will take you to the Khamis area where you will find the few remains of the
Al Khamis Mosque. It is considered to be one of the oldest relicsof Islam in the region, and the
foundation of this mosque is believed to have been laid as early as 692 AD. However, an
inscription found on the site suggests a foundation date sometime during the 11th century. It
has since been rebuilt twice in the 14th and15th centuries, which is when the minarets were
constructed. The Khamis mosque was partially restored recently. This is also believed to be the
first mosque in Bahrain.
