We work closely with a well-respected New York casting agent and several times a year our creative team will hold auditions in New York. Recently, things worked the other way around when the producers of the hottest current show on Broadway heard about a young actress in a production at New Theatre, (yes, New Theatre) auditioned her, then cast her to appear on Broadway. For our production last year of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, we cast Ron Bohmer who was, at that time in the Kennedy Center’s production of RAGTIME. Ron had starred in our production of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL a few years back and has a Broadway resume as long as your arm including the title role in Broadway’s THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL. Our casting agent suggested we consider a cast mate of Ron’s from RAGTIME for the role of Maria. An actress named Leigh Ann Larkin who had appeared with Patti LuPone on Broadway in GYPSY. Both Leigh Ann and Ron had a window in their schedules which made it convenient for them to do THE SOUND OF MUSIC in Kansas. Ron would be staying with RAGTIME when it went to Broadway and Leigh Ann had just been cast in the revival of Sondheim’s A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC after a personal audition for Stephen Sondheim himself and the production’s celebrated director Trevor Nunn. Neither of these continued inside 2 NEW THEATRE RESTAURANT NEWS | SPRING 2010 productions would begin rehearsal until after New Theatre’s THE SOUND OF MUSIC closed. So Ron and Leigh Ann came to New Theatre. If you saw our production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC between July 28 and August 30, 2009, then you also saw a 13 year-old actress from Lee’s Summit named Katherine McNamara in the role of Louisa. We had cast Katherine previously in our 2007 production of OKLAHOMA. OK, please pay attention now because this is where the whole story comes together. When our sell out production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC closed, both Ron and Leigh Ann left for their next jobs on Broadway. Ron to RAGTIME and Leigh Ann to A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC which In three weeks, we will be announcing the new season.... watch your mail! Until then try to figure out the five stars appearing in season 19 and enter to win $500!* SPRING 2010 | NEW THEATRE RESTAURANT NEWS was starring Catherine Zeta Jones and the legendary Angela Landsbury. Several weeks into the run, one of the young actresses in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC has to drop out of the show. The producers start looking for someone to replace her. Leigh Ann remembers how much she respected Katherine’s abilities and suggests they contact her. Katherine hops on a plane to audition and is hired that very day to join the cast of the hottest show on Broadway. Dreams come true. You may have heard that last year Nonprofit Connect (formerly The Greater Kansas City Council on Philanthropy) named New Theatre its Business Philanthropist of the Year.
