that is seamlessly continued with the Audi S5 Sportback.

3.0 TFSI: the combination
of the FSI direct fuel injection
together with a mechanical
charger module
After no more than 5.4 seconds you will understand why.
The engine – the heart of the Audi S5 Sportback.
The torque and acceleration will already impress
in the first few metres. To achieve this goal, our engineers have been ambitiously and energetically
designing, testing and improving. The result is a
true Audi engine: the 3.0 TFSI V6*.
With 245 kW and a peak torque of 440 Nm, the
V6 races from 0 to 100 km/h in an impressive
5.4 seconds. The engine spontaneously comes to
life, driving the vehicle powerfully forward. The
direct fuel injection as well as the mechanical super-
charger and charge air cooling all contribute to the
outstanding start-up performance. Thanks to FSI®
technology, the fuel is injected into the combustion chamber in the precise quantities required.
Evaporation of the fuel directly in the combustion
chamber causes heat to be withdrawn from the
drawn-in fresh air. This makes it possible to increase compression and therefore efficiency. This
makes the V6 TFSI into a compact powerhouse
and ensures an exceptional power output. The lively six-cylinder has access to high power reserves

that can be called on dynamically and harmoniously across the entire speed range. And all this
with an impressive ample torque curve: 90 % of
the torque is available across an engine speed
range of 2,200 to 5,900 rpm. For especially intense
driving enjoyment – whether for short sprints or
long straights.

our engineers has more than paid off.

we created one of the best all-wheel drive systems in the world.
Of course, that was not good enough for us.

years of quattro®
Those who know Audi know quattro®. And they
still remember today the legendary drive of an
Audi 100 quattro over 20 years ago – up the
37 degree slope of a snow covered ski jump. An
impressive demonstration of the performance of
the all-wheel drive of the Audi.
The quattro technology transfers the driving
force dynamically and asymmetrically to all
four wheels. Distributing power as the current
driving situation demands. At the same time, the
system has been designed with slight rear emphasis and transfers the correct torque for each
wheel in fractions of a second. The advantage
of this is better traction during acceleration,
increased stability and improved safety due to
better road grip.

for us. Which is why – following intensive development work – we are able to add a further
chapter to this success story. quattro with sports
differential (optional).
This technology works in a similar way to carving. Because the carving ski enables sportspeople
to negotiate curves magnificently. No slipping,
no steering adjustments. Exactly the same as
quattro with sports differential. Although not on
the ski slopes but on the road.
How does it work? It is simple: the active sports
differential is an electronically controlled rear
axle transmission. Depending on factors such as
steering angle, lateral acceleration and driving
speed, the software from Audi calculates the
optimum distribution of power to the wheels –
up to 100 times per second. The torque is then
transferred in variable proportions to the right
and left rear wheels. Put more simply: power is
purposely directed to one of the rear wheels.
The effect, for example when accelerating into
a curve, is impressive. The vehicle is effectively
pressed into the corner and follows the angle
of the front wheels. A similar effect to carving.
Cornering is more spontaneous, with the vehicle
taking the curve dynamically and following the
radius precisely.
The variable left and right driving forces also
help to stabilise the steering. Understeering, or
front wheel skid, is eradicated. Or put another
way: the friction and weight optimised quattro
with sports differential further increases driving
enjoyment.

What is the benefit of two clutches?
A double saving: time and energy.
A convincing answer, behind which there lies an
equally convincing technology: S tronic.
The 7-speed dual clutch transmission facilitates
rapid gear shifting with hardly any perceptible interruption in power flow and is therefore particularly efficient.
As long ago as 1985, Walter Röhrl tested this
technology in the Sport quattro S1 – and was
suitably impressed. An enthusiasm that Audi
drivers share to this day, because the modern
S tronic changes gear in under 0.2 seconds. To do
this, two multi-disc clutches serve the different
gears. One large clutch transfers the torque via a
drive shaft to the gearwheels of the odd-num-
bered gears. A second compact clutch serves the
even-numbered gears and the reverse gear via a
hollow shaft. Both parts of the transmission are
permanently active, although there is only ever
one actively connected to the engine. For example, if the vehicle is accelerating in third gear,
then only the first part of the transmission is
providing the power. The second part of the
transmission is, however, already engaged in
fourth gear. When switching gears, it is not only
the gear that changes but also the clutch – and
in a few hundredths of a second. So quickly and
fluently that the driver hardly notices.
The S tronic also features two separate oil sys-
tems. The advantage of this design: In the development of the double clutch transmission there
was no need to compromise. That is already clear
after the first few metres. It does not matter
whether the driver chooses the fully automatic
modes with the programme D (Drive) or S (Sport)
or changes gear manually with the gearshift paddles – the gear change feels precise and extremely smooth. Even with all of the dynamic technology, the S tronic still remains very efficient.
Because due to its high efficiency, there is a reduction in both fuel consumption and emissions.
Fast gear changes, dynamism and increased efficiency – two clutches really have a lot to offer.

The suspension with damper regulation can be set
to individual needs between dynamic and comfort
modes. Sensors measure amongst other things, road
handling, steering and vehicle load. The suspension
characteristics are adapted to meet driving conditions
in milliseconds. This means reduced rolling or pitching
movements and a more comfortable drive.
Superb road handling is ensured even for a
sporty driving style with the S sports suspension.
That is because it was specially designed for the
challenges faced by a powerful vehicle like the
Audi S5 Sportback. The spring and dampers are
more tightly tuned, the stabiliser bars strengthened. This means that the rolling and pitching
movements of the bodywork and vibrations are
reduced and road contact is improved. Thanks to
the S sports suspension, the Audi S5 Sportback
sits lower on the road – giving an enhanced appearance of always being ready to go. Once on the
road, the speed-dependent servotronic impresses
with outstanding handling. At higher speeds the
steering is firmer and remains extremely precise,
giving exact feedback and a quicker response to
steering wheel movement. And the servotronic
reduces the steering effort required when manoeuvring. An impressive combination of sportiness and comfort.
The optional Audi drive select offers you the opportunity to individually set the driving characteristics of the Audi S5 Sportback. In dynamic mode
you are able to take full advantage of the sports
potential. Or for longer journeys simply choose
comfort mode. The auto mode combines the best
of these two types of driving and, in combination
with the individual mode available with an Audi
navigation system, lets you select your own personal style. (Audi drive select can only be ordered
with dynamic steering and/or suspension with
damper regulation and/or quattro® with sports
differential.)
In short: the selection options of the various
driving modes make the Audi S5 Sportback an
impressive sports car with great comfort yet
almost without compromise.
