Dear Crocker Farm Families:
We hope that you will find the “Crocker Farm Chronicles” a useful resource that will help you
identify upcoming events and important information in your child’s daily life. We all strive to
make school a safe, inviting and intellectually stimulating place for your child.
 We have already had a successful fire drill. The children responded to the drill with precision and appropriate
safety behaviors. We will continue to practice what to do when we hear the alarm throughout the year. Later
in September we will practice our Lockdown and Shelter-in-Place exercises.
 When you visit, please do not leave your car idling in the fire lane at the entrance to the school.
 The next Coffee/Tea with the Principal is Friday, September 26th at 9:00am. We are exploring the option of
having an evening Coffee/Tea event with the Principal in the coming months.
 This year’s school book is Brave Girl: Clara and the Shirt Waist Maker’s Strike of 1909 by Michelle Markel.
Monday, September 29th, our day will start with Mr. Shea reading the beginning of the book over the loud
speaker. Classes will continue reading and discussing the book which focuses on empathy, grit and
determination. Empathy is one of our core values which includes Cooperation, Accountability, Respect and
Empathy.
 Please refrain from wearing fragrances when visiting Crocker Farm School. Individuals’ sensitivities to
fragrances can cause allergic reactions.
 Curriculum Night is Tuesday, September 30th from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The evening will begin in the cafeteria with
Mr. Shea and Ms. Conklin. Parents and Guardians will then have an opportunity to visit classrooms at
specified. Full schedule will be sent home before the event. Information on childcare will be forthcoming.
 Band and Orchestra started yesterday!
 This year our Art, Music, P.E., Library and Computer Technology teachers are full time. Yay! Every classroom
has the opportunity for all of these “specials” classes each week. The arts teachers also have additional time
with classrooms to integrate the arts into our curriculum. For example, Mr. James has been working with some
third graders on cooperative games as part of our Second Step curriculum. Our teachers will share more about
this exciting initiative at Curriculum Night. School picture day – Monday September 29th – look for envelopes in
your child’s backpack.
 The ARPS Family Center is partnering with the Mobile Dentist Program to provide optional on-site dental care
for children this year. Notices went home for families to sign their children up for the Dental van visit which is
on October 1st. If you need more information, please do not hesitate to contact the school so we can help.
 Next week we will send home a copy of our K-6 master schedule along with a copy of the specials weekly
schedule. We hope this will provide your family with more information about what we do here each day and
week at Crocker Farm School.
 Coming Soon: In the lobby of our school we will have a board with staff pictures so you can see all of the teams
of individuals that work with your children.
 One of our goals this year is to provide our families with ongoing information about the learning that takes
place in our school. Please look for regular communication from the school highlighting curriculum areas and
projects.

Esperamos que Usted encuentre las “Crónicas de Crocker Farm” un recurso muy útil que le
ayudará a identificar eventos e información importante en la vida cotidiana de su hijo y su
familia. Todos nos esforzamos para ofrecerles un sitio seguro, conviviente e estimulante para el
desarrollo cerebral de su hijo.
 Hemos tenido un simulacro para practicar (por si acaso) haya un incendio. Los niños respondieron con
precisión y conducta de seguridad apropiados. Continuaremos la práctica cuando escuchamos las alarmas.
Más tarde en septiembre practicaremos los ejercicios de aislamiento y refugio en el cuarto de cada niño.
 Cuando visitan a la escuela, por favor, no dejen el motor el automóvil en marcha al frente del edificio.
 El próximo café/te con el director es el viernes, 26 de septiembre a las nueve de la mañana. Estamos
explorando la posibilidad de tener una plática café/te a la tarde durante los próximos meses.
 El libro en común para este año escolar se llama: Valiente: Clara y la huelga de los fabricantes de camisas en
1909 escrito por Michelle Markel. El lunes, 29 de septiembre, nuestro día se iniciará por medio del altavoz.
Señor Shea, el director de la escuela leerá el libro en voz alta para toda la escuela. Cada clase continuara
leyendo y discutiendo el libro y sus temas de empatía, ánimo y determinación. La empatía es uno de nuestros
valores fundamentales que se incluye en Cooperación, ser responsable, respeto e empatía.
 Por favor, pedimos que Usted no se ponga fragancias cuando visita la escuela. Las sensibilidades de las
personas pueden causar reacciones alérgicas.
 Noche de currículo es el martes 30 de septiembre desde las seis de la tarde hasta las ocho. La noche
comenzara en la cafetería con el Señor Shea y la Señorita Conklin. Los padres y tutores tendrá la oportunidad
de visitar las aulas especificadas para su niño. El programa completo se mandaran antes del evento.
Información sobre el servicio de tomar cuidado de los niños para esta tarde se mandará a su casa
próximamente.
 Banda y orquesta comenzaron ayer.
 Este año los maestros de arte, música, educación física, biblioteca y tecnología son puestos de tiempo
completo. ¡Qué alegría para todos nosotros! Cada aula tiene la oportunidad para que todas estas clases
“especiales” durante la semana. Los maestros de las artes también tiene tiempo adicional con clases para
integrar arte en nuestro plan de estudios. Por ejemplo, el Sr. James (educación física) ha estado trabajando con
algunos estudiantes de tercer grado en los juegos cooperativos como parte de nuestro plan de estudios del
Segundo paso. Nuestros profesores compartirán más sobre esta iniciativa emocionante durante la noche de
currículo.
 El día para fotos de su niño en escuela es el lunes 29 de septiembre (busquen el sobre con información en la
mochila el viernes 19 de septiembre).
 El centro familiar del pueblo se asocia con el programa de dentista móvil para proporcionar una atención

Dear Crocker Farm Families,
We hope you are all enjoying the beginning of fall, and that your children are now settling into their
new classes. We are writing today to say hello, and to introduce ourselves.
All Crocker Farm families are automatically part of the Parent and Guardian Organization (PGO). The
PGO’s mission is to enhance our children’s education and social experience at Crocker Farm by:
 Planning events that bring us together as a school community
 Finding ways to support and show our appreciation of our teachers and staff, and by
 Sponsoring fundraisers to raise money for special school events, field trips, teacher mini-grants,
and supplies for our school.
The PGO is currently hard at work producing this year’s student directory for families. If you have not
yet returned the student directory form for your child(ren) that went home in backpacks, please do so
at your earliest convenience, and no later than next Friday, September 19th. If you would prefer, you
can
complete
an
online
version
of
the
directory
form
at
the
PGO
blog,
www.crockerfarmpgo.blogspot.com. If you do not complete a directory form, and give the PGO
permission to publish your contact information, then your family cannot be included in the directory.
Many thanks to all the families who have already returned their directory form.
The PGO’s blog is a good source of information for the latest news on the PGO, and school and
community events of interest. You can subscribe at the blog address above to receive a daily email
containing the newest posts. The PGO is also on Facebook (Crocker-Farm-PGO).
The PGO is always seeking volunteers to help us with our various activities throughout the year, and
many of our events would not be possible without volunteer help. If you are interested in volunteering,
please return the PGO volunteer form that went home or email us at [email protected].
There are many ways to volunteer and even helping for just an hour or two can make a big difference.
The PGO has regularly scheduled monthly coffees with the Crocker Farm principal, Derek Shea. There
are generally held on the last Friday of the month, at the start of the school day, and are a great time
to learn more about school and PGO activities, and talk with our principal and special guests, and other
parents/guardians. The first three PGO coffees with the Principal are scheduled for: Friday, September
26th; Friday, October 31st, and Thursday, November 20th. More PGO events for the fall are being
planned; we will send out dates and details once we have them. The PGO will also be at the Crocker
Farm Curriculum Night scheduled for September 30th. Feel free to stop by and talk with us then, or to
email us at any time.

Queridas Familias de Crocker Farm,
Esperamos que estén disfrutando del comienzo del otoño, y que sus hijos se han acostumbrado a sus
nuevos salones. Le escribimos para darles saludos y para presentarnos.
Todas las familias de Crocker Farm automáticamente son miembros de la Organización de Padres y
Guardianes (la PGO). La misión de la PGO es enriquecer a la educación y a las experiencias sociales de
nuestros hijos en la Crocker Farm. Esperamos lograr esta misión con planificar actividades que unen a la
comunidad escolar, encontrar maneras para apoyar y mostrar nuestro agradecimiento a los maestros y al
cuerpo administrative, y patrocinar eventos para recaudar fondos para eventos escolares especiales,
salidas educativas, pequeños subsidios para los maestros, y materiales escolares.
La PGO está actualmente elaborando el directorio anual de estudiantes para sus familias. Si todavía no han
devuelto el formulario que se envió con sus hijos en sus mochilas, favor de devolverlo lo más pronto que
les sea posible. Si prefieren, se puede rellenar el formulario en línea en el blog de la PGO,
www.crockerfarmpgo.blogspot.com. Si no se rellena el formulario y no tenemos su permiso para publicar
su información de contacto, no les podemos incluir en el directorio. Muchísimas gracias a las familias que
ya han devuelto el formulario del directorio.
El blog de la PGO es una buena fuente de información para las noticias más corrientes de la PGO y para
notificación sobre actividades y eventos en la escuela y en la comunidad. En el blog, se pueden suscribir al

La PGO siempre está en busca de voluntarios para ayudarnos con nuestras varias actividades durante el
año, y muchas de nuestras actividades no tendrían éxito sin estos voluntarios. Si tienen interés en ser
voluntarios, favor de devolver el formulario de voluntario de la PGO que se envió a sus casas con sus hijos.

Welcome to the 2014-2015
school year! I hope everyone had a wonderful
and active summer. Every year my goal is to
promote a safe environment full of respect for
self and others. Within the curriculum students
will learn many different skills that they can
take with them to practice a physically active
lifestyle. From loco motor, manipulative, balance, sport specific , and social skills. My hope
is to have students continue to find ways that
inspire them to be active while having fun
working with their peers.
Weekly Update
In the beginning weeks of
school, grades 3-6 will
introduced to team building and cooperative
games, where we will
practice skills like communication, cooperation,
trust, and teamwork.
These are skills that we
carry with us on a daily
basis in and out of
school. The Group Juggle, Hula Hoop Relay,
Trust Walk, Beach ball
Handball, and the Human
Ladder are all group or
partner activities where
students are working on
these skills. In support of
our C.A.R.E values at
Crocker Farm, team
building creates a wonderful foundation for our
physical education program.
In grades K-2,
students have been learning about traveling in different pathways, while
practicing different loco-
motor movements like
hopping, skipping, galloping, bear walking, sliding,
and jumping. Students are
also learning how to perform a safe stop along
with different spacing
concepts.

Espero que todos disfrutaron de un verano lleno de memorias hermosas y actividades físicales. Cada año mi meta es
promover un medioambiente lleno de respeto por el individual y todos los demas. Dentro del currículo, los alumnos
aprendarán distintos modales . La meta es que todos los niños aprenden formas de mantener una vida activa.
Claves del día
 Empezamos armar los equipos de una forma pequeña—luego añadamos participantes
 Trate de sentarse espalda
contra espalda con un amigo.
Luego, enlacen los brazos y
traten de parase sin desenlazar los brazos.
 Ahora, siéntense cara hacia
cara y pon los pies en contra
de los pies de un amigo.
Agárrense de las manos y
traten de pararse.
 Si logran los dos ejercicios
con dos personas—
inténtenlos con cuatro personas.
Noticias de las primeras semanas
Durante las primeras
semanas, los niños de
grados 3 hasta 6 se enfoquen en ejercicios cuyo
objetivo es comunicarse
y crear un equipo fuerte.
Estos ejercicios nos ayudan a tener una vida sana
dentro y fuera de la escuela. Hacer juegos malabares, carera de Hula

Community Preservation Act Committee

The CPA Committee is developing a
prioritization plan for the use of
Community Preservation Act funds and
is seeking public input and guidance.
Massachusetts’ Community Preservation Act allows towns to raise money to support
open space protection, historic preservation, affordable housing and outdoor recreation.
Funds are raised locally through a surcharge against real property (currently, in Amherst,
set at 1.5% of the tax levy) and matched with additional distributions from a statewide
Community Preservation Trust Fund.
Since 2001, Amherst has raised over $3M locally and received nearly $2M in state
matching funds. CPA funds have helped Amherst:
• Protect hundreds of acres of land for conservation, recreation, and farming.
• Contribute to the creation of almost 50 units of new affordable housing and help
maintain our existing affordable housing.
• Support dozens of preservation efforts protecting the town’s historic sites,
buildings, documents, and artifacts.
• Develop athletic fields and improve facilities at the town’s recreation areas.
CPA Committee is charged with annually updating the plan which guides funding
recommendations to Town Meeting, and public participation is important. The committee
will be listening carefully at this forum to learn your priorities for funding future projects.
