Golf Club Maintenance Update
Summer has finally arrived in North Texas. I hope each of
you is having a great summer and getting to enjoy some
vacation time. The spring and early summer has been a
busy time for golf maintenance and I would like to touch
on a few things we have been focused on.
• Spot Sodding Rough Areas – We will continue with
these efforts as time and labor is available. Our primary
focus will be to finish the rough on 6 and then move to 14.
• Greens – We have been working diligently to get the
greens back to their normal state. The severe winter and
humid spring presented us with some challenges we have
not previously faced. We covered greens 9 times this year
with a really late cold snap at the end of March after we had
broken dormancy. With the cool humid spring we had an
outbreak of Leaf Spot which adversely affected several of the
greens. We are seeing rapid recovery with the completion of
our aerification and verticutting and will continue an
aggressive fertility and topdressing program until they are
fully recovered. We will also be utilizing the groomers and
power brushes on our greens mowers to promote good
lateral growth and increase green speeds.
• Please fix your ball mark and one other.
• Spot Sodding Fairways – We began spot sodding
fairways in late May. We have addressed all bare areas that
we did not feel would grow in on their own. We have
removed 4 to 6 inches of poor soil and replace with good
topsoil. As you have probably noticed we have been
utilizing the grass from the front (tee side) of 13 fairway.
We were unable to purchase sod in a timely manner for this
project due to the sod farms struggling from the winter.
We will be capping this area with a sand/compost mix and
growing it back in for the plant material left behind. Please
take a free drop from this area as it recovers.
• Aerevate Fairways and Roughs – We completed the
fairways in June and should have the rough completed in
early July. This is a great process to create air space, relieve
compaction and encourage lateral growth.
• Cooler on 6 – We will be moving this from hole 6 to 5 in
order to deter some of the traffic off of Lantana Trail. This
winter we will move the cooler on 8 to 7 and 12 to 11 for
the same reasons.
Couple of housekeeping issues for each of you as you play.
• Properly rake bunkers and replace rake in the proper
location. A properly raked bunker requires both hands and
the area disturbed should be completely smooth for the
groups behind you. Our staff sets the course each morning
and places the rakes in the most desirable locations for ease
of use. The idea is for the golf course to be the same for the
last group as it was for the first.
• Please sand divots with the sand provided on the carts or
the push carts. There is a refill station at the turn if you
run out.
• Please be mindful of the cart return signs. We try to
avoid any traffic within 60 yards of the greens.
• Please vary your traffic (both carts and push carts) to
avoid continuous wear.
• Please throw broken tees in the rough or the trash cans in
order to keep the tees free of debris. This is not only
unsightly but can cause damage to the cutting units.
• Thanks in advance for your attention to these items and
most of all have FUN playing the great game of golf!
As always, I look forward to seeing each of you on the
course and please stop me if you have any questions. You
can also email me at [email protected].
Have a great summer!
Kurt Sewell
