Wenstrom Dorothy Mae Peterson, age 89, passed away peacefully, January 5, 2015, at Essentia-St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota. Dorothy was born September 22, 1925, to Otis and Carrie Porter of Grayling, Minnesota. She attended McGregor High School, Duluth Teachers College, and University of Minnesota-Duluth where she graduated with a teaching degree. Her first teaching position was in Riverton, Minnesota, then Nashwauk, Minnesota, and then she spent 29 years teaching elementary grades in Floodwood, Minnesota. Dorothy married Norman Peterson on September 21, 1951, and they made Floodwood, Minnesota their home. They raised three and she helped Norman on several business AUTOsons REPAIR ventures including a John Deere dealership, a Ford dealership, the Frolic Drive Inn restaurant, a peat moss harvesting and sales business, and an interstate trucking company, while teaching DOWNTOWN MCGREGOR full-time. M-F 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After retiring from teaching in 1988, she obtained a real estate license and worked for Lil Stocke Realty and Edina Realty in Duluth. She enjoyed many hobbies: reading, bowling, golf, gardening, cooking and baking, and was a member of the Horticulture Club of Duluth. She traveled to most of the U.S., including Alaska, and to Europe. She enjoyed and followed political issues and was a lifelong Democrat. Her no-nonsense approach to solving world problems were often published in the letters to the editor section of the Duluth News Tribune. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Carrie Porter; one brother, Jim Porter; and one sister, Ruth Hasner. She is survived by her three sons: Scott Peterson of Floodwood, Minnesota, Kevin(Kim) Peterson of Rochester, Minnesota, and Jamie(Tammy) Peterson of Floodwood, Minnesota; grandchildren: Danielle Peterson of Denver, Colorado, Kristopher(Kami) Peterson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Erica(Tim) Wennes of Kasson, Minnesota, Houston Peterson of Dodge Center, Minnesota, Tara(Aaron) Jarvenpa of Superior, Wisconsin, and Tasha(Erik Lull) Belter of Superior, Wisconsin; great-grandchildren: Arianna, Siri, McKenna, Ethan, Mason and Silas; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thanks to Melinda, Pam, Tabatha, and Debbie for all their loving care. Dorothy had many great friends including Helen Snyder and “Bo,” her Golden Retriever. A memorial service will be held January 17, 2015, at Hope Lutheran church in Floodwood, MN – Visitation at 12 p.m., service at 1 p.m. There will be a luncheon following the service at the Rich Event Center in Floodwood. A&M 768-CARS 2277 DORALIE ANN HAAPOJA (August 7, 1942- January 4, 2015) Doralie Ann Haapoja, age 72, of Aitkin, formerly of Tamarack, died Sunday, January 4, 2015, at the Oak Haven Care Center in Aitkin. Doralie was born August 7, 1942, in Cloquet, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Elma (Issacson) Gillette. She grew up and attended schools in McGregor, graduating in 1960 and was the class valedictorian. She then attended school in St. Cloud for a short time before mov- ing to the Twin Cities. She married Donald Maki on September 10, 1961, in Tamarack. They lived in the Twin Cities and she worked for Augsburg College in the administration office and then worked for Twin City Optical as a bookkeeper. Later, she married Harold Haapoja and they made their home south of Tamarack and operated a dairy farm. She also worked for the Aitkin Public Schools and later for Northwood Equipment as a bookkeeper. She has resided at Oak Haven for the past 12 years. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, sewing and walking. She was a hard worker and was a very open-minded person. Everyone she met was a potential friend. She is survived by her daughter, Christine (Karl) Phalan of Rogers, Arkansas; sister, Maxine (James) Maijala of Tamarack; brothers: Jon (Linda) Gillette of Tamarack and Joe (Dee) Gillette of Joshua, Texas; four grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and one nephew, John. A memorial service was held Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 2 p.m. from the Tamarack Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rick Mann officiating. Burial was in the St. Matthews Lutheran Cemetery in Cloquet in the spring. Arrangements are with the McGregor Funeral Home. www.srtfuneral. com CARL GUNNARD OBERG JR. (September 12, 1953- January 4, 2015) Carl Gunnard Oberg Jr. died Sunday, January 4, 2015, at his residence at Riverside Home in Big Fork, Minnesota, where he has resided for the past 25 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris S. Johnson; father, Carl Gunnard Oberg Sr.; and step-father, Donald B. Johnson. He is survived by his siblings: Sandra Ciche (Dennis) of Duluth, Colleen Bassett (Keith) of Cloquet, Charlotte Hoppe (Tom) of Isle, Carla Taylor (Greg) of Grand Rapids, Kathleen Goodwin (Glen) of Florida; Susan Barnes of Texas; Peter Oberg (Deb) of California; John Oberg (Michele) of Carlton; and many nieces and nephews and special caregivers, Mike and Mary Zuelke, and staff at Riverside Home of Bigfork. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2015, at 11 a.m. from the McGregor Funeral Home in McGregor, with Rev. Greg DeMuth officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Round Lake Cemetery. DAVID CHARLES FOX (1951 - December 30, 2014) David Charles Fox, 63, of Cromwell, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014, in Solvay Hospice House in Duluth. David was born in Floodwood, in 1951, to George Sr. and Ruth (Dahlberg) Fox. He was raised in Floodwood and graduated from Hermantown High School in 1969. He married Elizabeth Swanstrom on September 22, 1973, in Proctor. David was a heavy equipment operator for Earthmovers and Jerry Waldholm, both in Proctor, up until his early retirement in 1981 due to a disability.
