What is the YW Geek Girls Club©?
Club©
YW Geek Girls
engages high school girls aged 14-18 years old in developmentally appropriate
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) exploration. The approach utilizes real world
problem-solving to engage girls in STEM; including hands-on activities, persistence strategies, community
building, exposure to STEM settings, and access to women mentors. Girls collaborate to solve real-world
problem sets utilizing various STEM disciplines throughout the course. Girls also identify and build
resiliency strategies to counter negative stereotypes and foster confidence in their STEM identity. In
addition to completing their projects, girls will visit technology and science hubs, urban infrastructure
centers, and science labs at universities, including the MIT’s Media Lab.

Girls Initiatives
The YWCA of the City of New York’s girls programs will convene girls from across the city representing a
wide spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds in a multicultural and multiracial coalition to learn
leadership skills, advance academic aspirations and challenge social perceptions about girls. Through a
variety of instructional, experiential and interpersonal experiences, participants will emerge informed,
inspired and activated to advance understanding, dialogue and social action on vital issues facing girls in
our city .

Dear Potential Geek Girls,
The YWCA of the City of New York is excited to launch our girls programming this year with
amazing opportunities for girls in New York – including the YW Geek Girls Club©. The program is
designed to engage diverse groups of girls to bring communities together across the city to
empower girls and women.
Our YW Geek Girls Club© will give self-identified high school girls a challenging STEM
experience, regardless of their prior experience in the field. You will be able to come together
and learn from the best about STEM, in a gender specific environment that will make the work
relatable to their world. The exposure to professionals in the field will enhance the experience
and will make the link between school and career more visible.
We hope that the YW Geek Girls Club© sparks your interest in the STEM fields! I look forward to
seeing all geek girls join us!
Best,
Dr. Danielle Moss Lee
