2011 is the year for HannsStar to transform in values and innovate

Shareholders
in Technologies. Going through years of up-and-downs in industries and
crisis in economic challenges, HannsStar survived with the shareholder's
support and the staff's efforts.
The development of vision and operational strategy in 2012: It is our
mission to take in development of sustainability into value innovation,
technological innovation, implementation and execution. For the market
trend in the future, mobile devices will drive the demand. HannsStar is
facing the demand of the market and the trend, and has developed a
series of mobile devices including smart phones and Pad products. With
a stable operational manner, we compose targets of CSR as sustainable
innovation, environmental protection and energy conservation, risk
management and stronger financial structure. We will face the challenges
in 2013, working hard to be a more sustainable and profitable HannsStar.
As for technological innovation, we continuously focus on the
technological platforms for the smart phone and pad products. For high
resolutions, we finished development of platform of HAR and H2AR, and
our own technology--HUVA1. For developing light and thin panel, we are
the pioneers to apply glass with thickness of 0.4mm to procedures in
factories of 5.3 generation. We also developed one of the lightest and
thinnest panels for pad products of 7 and 10.1 inches, and developing
LED backlight panels structure—lighter and thinner.
For the low power consumption products, we develop with higher
efficient backlight tuning IC and LED. For the wide view angle, we are one
of the manufacturers stably providing panels with wide view angle. We will
make a further step to utilize HUVA platform to develop more economical
wide view angle HUVA technology. For the touch panel integration, our OGS
touch panel for pad product and smart phone are applied to touch module
for selling, and we are also developing On Cell Touch Solutions to provide a
total solution for touch panels.

Although it is depressing for economy at present, we are still holding a
belief in sustainability on environmental protection and topics. In 2011 we
finished GPM/QC08000 verification, developed all series of LED-structured
products, implemented energy-conservation and carbon reduction, finished
chain, reduced the yearly greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and has
strengthened recycle and reuse of the waste. HannsStar finished energyconserving authentication of global environmental protection such as TCO,
GS, Energy Star. Not only we improved the quality of the products, but
To All Shareholders
the halogen-free design, finished training RoHS and Haloge- free supply
strengthened our brand image and value.
Since 2010 CFP of HannsStar's 10.1-inch touch panel in the pad
product was verified, first in the world, in 2011 WFP of HannsStar's 10.1 inch
touch panel was verified, also first in the world. In May in 2011, the carbon
label mechanism in packing system on the authenticated products started.
Till April in 2012, we have CFP of 7products, WFP of 2 verified and carbon
label of 6 authenticated by TEEMA2.
In the future, through the inventory of carbon emission, we can focus
on the critical procedure, and check carbon during logistic internally and
externally to extend the influence and strengthen competitiveness. By the
execution of promotion and communication programs, we will help supply
chain to set up their own products CFP and GHG information. Jointing
together, we hope contribute reducing GHG emission.
Meanwhile, in 2011 HannsStar introduced more social and art activities
into the factory and office. We had theatrical troupes, interview with director
of a Taiwanese movie, singer group concert, speeches of super marathon
player, and philanthropies. All of the above helps us caring for employees
and remind them of importance of family and take care of the needed, and
encourages us to pay more efforts on social responsibility.

HannStar's Two Little Steps
For HannStar In 2011, foreign courts carried on the lawsuit to the panel industry in Taiwan
and demands of American and European market has becoming conservative; furthermore, there
was a pressure of financial breakeven internally.
Though bearing the pressure, HannStar still understands that fulfilling the earth citizen's
obligations can bring advantages of not only saving costs by managing carbon and water and the
corresponding energy consumption, but also preparing ourselves toward international environmental
standard and trend. A the same time, on researches and development, we consider environmental
protection an essential part and set up the clear environmental protection performance indicators,
so that we can screen all the choices to the right development direction from the very beginning
stage. Environmental protection helps us to optimize company's decision.
The frequency of extreme climate teaches human beings one thing-- it is urgent to reduce
carbon. On the other hand, water is another subject we cannot ignore in Taiwan, so HannStar
disciplines ourselves over water subject even more. Through inventory of carbon and water
footprint, we can control and manage emissions within life cycle of a product. In the future, we
will further influence our supply chains through promotion and communication programs to help
suppliers to manage and disclose carbon footprint and GHG emissions.
Jointing together, we hope contribute reducing GHG emission.
1&2 CFP, Carbon Footprint. WFP, Water Footprint The value of carbon footprint means the discharge degree of the
carbon dioxide in the life cycle of a specific product. And the value of water footprint means the consumption
degree of the water resource of the earth on a specific product. Both of them are the smaller, the better.

especially water resource, on the earth.
In order to disclose WFP information in the whole life cycle,
HannStar invites colleagues in charge of factory affair, occupational
safety, and manufacturing departments to collect water consumption,
waste water and discharge information. At the same time, through the
supply chain mechanism we started educational and training program,
collect supplier's water information and calculate the data about water
by the site of every supplier, such as in China's Mainland, Japan, South
Korea and Taiwan. In 2011 Sep, HannStar's 10.1“ LCD panel and

panel is the first one of the kind ever verified in the world.
By the end of 2011, HannStar has 2 products verified on WFP
by certification body. And through analyzing information of water
consumption, we actively plan more economical modes on water, seek
to apply technology on saving water, emit fewer waste water.

Demeter – helps HannStar calculate CFP and WFP anytime
In November 2012, HannStar purchased Demeter, WFP and CFP calculation system, from
IST technology. Without seeking the external verification, HannStar can calculate CFP and
WFP anytime---on the initial stage of developing, in the middle of manufacturing, or just before
delivering to the customers. HannStar can choose parts with the lower carbon footprint or
manufacturing processes, calculate CFP and WFP of all products any time. We are determined to
actively manage CFP and WFP on all products, new or old.

Business Review
Group result in 2011 HannsStar’s main market is in Europe and America, and both were all in lower demand for Europe’s financial crisis. In
addition, the panel industry in Taiwan were facing U.S.A.’s lawsuit and
penalty. EPS was still negative in 2011.
Outlook for 2012 The most important thing is to improve the managing operation. In addition, we will continue trying to penetrate Chinese
market and set up the streamlined marketing channel with HannsStar’s
own shops.
Market environment According to industrial analysis, the demand of
TFT-LCD products will still be high. But quantity of competitors will be
a concern, and consumers are very sensitive to prices. The regulation
and consumers are putting emphasis on energy-conserving and environmental protection gradually.
Group Strategy We develop value chain to have optimized integration,
strengthen on the patent and research ability, focus on compliance on
commercial competition, and cooperate with our supply chain on environmental protection, tax, workforce, and investment in various countries.

Brief introduction of HannsStars
1. HannStar Display Corporation is a listed company in Taiwan (6116), and the
main stockholders include national and international organizations and individuals.
“HannsStar” means the vast space and boundless vision, and we entitle ourselves to open
the vast and boundless scientific and technological vision. We devoted to technology researching
and innovation of the colored liquid crystal display, and expect to lead the mankind to have more
abundant and broad vision.
Therefore, HannsStar's LOGO is composed with the succinct letters and starry sky of the
azure universe--the succinct letters represent efficiency, innovation and elasticity of enterprises,
the starry sky in blue shows possibilities of HannsStar's science and technologies, and the cool
blue emphasizes the attribute of the High-Tech industry. Altogether, the logo shows our selfconfidence...
HannsStar produces and sells TFT-LCD panels under brand names of Hannspree and
Hanns.G to manufacturers of notebook, monitor and consumer electronics in Taiwan, Japan,
South Korea, U.S.A., China's Mainland and Europe. HannsStar's LCD panel and touch panels are
developed for smart phone and pad products. We input huge marketing budgets on Hannspree
and Hanns.G for establishing brand image, marketing plans and after-sell service center. And
we also work hard on setting up channels in Chinese for monitor and TV market. While enhancing
marketing communication, we also pay attention on protection of customer privacy and product
compliance.
HannsStar's strategy for the near future is not to expand capacity but to higher operating
performance. Therefore, with limited resources, we integrate and optimize our group's value
chain including material and TFT-LCD factories, medium- and small-sized LCM module factories,
factories of touch panel modules and our own brand HannsG. The integration makes HannsStar a
professional company in marketing LCD panel products and the brand products.

Hightlight: Poland becomes the main TV production center in Europe
Poland lies in the center of Continental Europe with convenient geographical position. In
addition, with competitive labor costs, plentiful supply of electric power, and government's
administrative support, Poland has become HannsStar's European TV production center. Take
the 2 brands HANNSpree and HANNS-G for example, their assembly rate of TV in 2011 in
Poland's warehouse is up to 66%, 2% higher compared to the year before. HannsStar can not
only reduce the cost and time in transportation, but also increase employment rate and economic
development in local market.

2. Board of directors
There are ten directors in 2011and among them two are independent directors. One out of the
ten is female, and all the directors are Taiwaneses over 40 years old and with sufficient educated
or professional operational experience. The board had 7 meetings in 2011.
In recent years we plan to strengthen the function of board of directors. Here are the progresses:
(1) The duty and “Board of directors meeting norms” is stipulated and documented, and
among the latter interests-avoiding clauses are also included and carried out to strengthen
the operation of the board.
(2) In order to encourage the directors to receive training, we offer government approved
institutions’training information to directors and tracking their training situation.
(3) To improve the transparency of information: Announce the important resolution of the
board immediately right after board meeting closed.
(4) The interests-avoiding of directors is applicable to the Corporate Law, articles 206 and
178.
16

3. Supervisors
HannStar uses supervisor system to execute functions of Audit Committee.
Supervisor's composition and duty:
directly with the staff, shareholder and stakeholders by email or phone when necessary.
(2) Ways to communicate with internal audit executives and certified accountants:
① Audit executives provided and reported the audit report to supervisors after finishing
audits; the supervisors had no objection.
Business Review
(1) Ways to communicate with employees and shareholders: supervisors get to contact
② When audit executives reported the audit report to board of directors, the supervisors
had no objection.
③ Supervisors can contact the certified accountants anytime to communicate business
issues.
4. Compensation Committee
The composition, duty and operation situation of the compensation committee of our
company are as below.
(1) The compensation committee was appointed by the board of directors on September 28,
2011. There are 3 members: 1 is an independent director, 1 director and 1 independent
professional. The organizational regulation of the compensation committee is on our
website. http://www.hannstar.com/Common.aspx?mid=195&tmid=4&modid=1
(2) The members of compensation committee should fulfill due diligence for the following
items and should be responsible to propose for discussion of the board.
① Stipulate and examine regularly the policy, system, standard and structure of the
linkage between performance and remuneration of directors, supervisors and
managers.
② Stipulate and examine regularly remuneration of directors, supervisors and managers.
③ Other items authorized by the board of directors.
(3) The compensation committee's operation
Committee's president convened a meeting once in 2011
5. The linkage between the reward to the top managers and organization’s
performance
Hannsastar had loss after tax in 2011, so distribution of surplus needs no discussion.
In addition, all directors and Supervisors could only have transportation allowance for their
17
2011 Corporate Social Responsibility Report
yearly work. According to HannStar stipulation, all directors and Supervisors could have no more
than 2% of surplus even in years of surplus. The above-mentioned principles could be adjusted
considering changes of economy, industry, company's future development and profit-making
situation.
6. Anti-corruption and information protection policy
Among working principles, "Behavior and working principles of the staff " stipulates no
engagement in fraud and bribes allowed, and the needs of interest-avoiding behavior. In addition,
we have another working principle "Business information protection policy" explaining details of
protecting the secret of company affairs. Internal audit office under President's administration
supervises the whole organization.
7. Lawsuits and sanctions
Among the sentenced and ongoing lawsuits or administration sanction, and the incidents of
the above might have significant influence on of stockholder's equity or the stock price—HannStar
has a statement as below.
Anvik Corporation filed a lawsuit against us for patent infringement in New York State in
America in February 2007-- the preliminary sentence from New York state court is that we won
the lawsuit. Anvik Corporation sought appealing. There should be no significant influences on our
operations.
Eidos Display LLC filed a lawsuit against us for patent infringement in east Taxes state in
America in April 2011—this case is in trial and we are offending progressively. There should be no
significant influences on our operations.
HannStar never involves in public policy lobbying and is compliant to laws about anticompetitiveness. However, in 2011 US Ministry of Justice, European Commission Competition
DG, Korea Fair Trade Commission and Japan Fair Trade Commission had monopoly investigation
on the panel manufacturers globally in Dec2006. Some consumers brought the civil action in U.S.A
and we have already appointed the lawyer.
As for results of investigations of antitrust law, HannStar has already had penalties of
USD 30 million, 8.71billion Korean Won and 8.1million Euro respectively, and settled with the
direct collective plaintiff and indirect collective plaintiff with USD14.9million and USD27 million
respectively. The above are listed on our financial statement and there should be no significant
influences on our operations anymore.
HannStar and administrative bureau of Southern Taiwan Science Park brought the
18
HannStar Display•Display Happiness
administrative lawsuit on the dispute of the administration expenses, and this case is in trial. There
should be no significant influences on our operations.
To concern shareholder’s topics, to keep communicative channels transparent any time, and
reflect the topic in time, is what we think of necessity for sustainability.
Considering interest parties of the daily operation, our CSR working group from the relative
departments defines out the following 5 types shareholders—customer, supplier, employee,

investor and community. CSR working group search on internet for CSR reports issued by relative
industries to collect all CSR topics and designed a questionnaire to have a sensitivity-andinfluence weight calculation to prioritize subjects matter to HannStar.
In addition to the regular communication channels, every year we send the questionnaire
to understand stakeholder’s concerns. With the feedback from communication channels and
questions, our CSR group screened out 20 topics considering company's operating environment,
community relation, customer's request, international trend, etc. for year 2011. The questionnaire
collected data of concerning level of our shareholders on important topics, and our colleagues
analyzed the impact level. Topics with high sensitivity and high influence would be in higher
priority listed on HannStar’s annual work program and disclosed in CSR Report.

Carbon Reduction
HannStar has proceeded ISO14064-1 inventory and external verification since 2005 and
reduces GHG voluntarily. Take the LCD factory in Southern Science Industrial Park for example,
the emission of GHG in 2011 is 346,000 metric tons of CO2e--the direct energy emission occupies
34.5%, other emission of direct GHG 1.4%, and the indirect energy emission 64.1%. PFCs (fluoride)
22
HannStar Display•Display Happiness
discharge contributes a big part to the direct energy emission, and electricity does the same to the
indirect energy emission, so our direction to reduce carbon is to focus on PFCs decrement and
electricity-saving. Here is the explanation about PFCs decrement and electricity-saving.is explained
About PFCs decrement:
▓ Promises: HannStar signed the memorandum of voluntarily reduction with TTLA1 and Environmental Protection Administration in 2004, promising all factories established after 2003 to be
installed with local scrubbers to reduce more than 90% PFCs2.
▓ Achievement: After setting up high efficient local scrubber to reduce the emission of PFCs like
SF6 and NF3, about 1.23million tons of CO2e was reduced from 2005 to 2011.
Producer's Green Activity
in the chapter “Energy-saving”.
We combine PFCs decrement and energy-saving solution together to have a good result-unit GHG emission is 0.072 ton/m2, 59% lower than that in 2005.

In addition, HannStar requests customers to have a lump sum return to save the freight
charges and reduce CO2 emission. And HannStar has commute bus for staff (from Chiayi,
Pingdong, Kaohsiung to factory in Tainan) to reduce not only staff's commute expenses and
accident probability, but also CO2 emission.
Water Resource Management
HannStar's sole water source is tap water, the water consumption for production reached
2.95million M3 in 2011, a 260,000 increase compared to 2010. The main reason is the
reconstruction for production of color filter lines and trial run of new production lines. The unit
usage of water increased to 0.62 in 2011(about 5% higher). We will keep managing it.

Green Supply Chain and Product Responsibility
In addition to REACH, RoHS, ISO14001, GPM/QC080000 verification and halogen-free
design, thanks to the suppliers'cooperation, our products are verified with international energysaving and safety marks like TCO, GS, and Energy Star.
Here is what we have done for supply chain of Hazardous Substance Free Product.
1. HannStar audits suppliers on QSA/QPA/GP systems.
2. When using new materials, it must come with ICP1 and Certificate of Forbidden Materials.
3. ICP3 report must be renewed by the supplier every year.
4. HannStar maintenance center guarantees to compliant with demand and standard of HSF.
(Hazardous Substance Free Product)
Thanks to our suppliers'cooperation, we finished the inventory of WFP of the certain
products in 2011. Like CFP, WFP needs data from every stage in life cycle and needs
suppliers'cooperation. This is our first time so we carefully engage in professional consultant, our
colleagues in relevant department, domestic and foreign suppliers. Totally data of 37 parts from
21 suppliers are inventoried and WFP of HannStar 10.1” touch panel in the pad product is the first
one of the kind ever verified in the world.
In the following stage, health and Safety impacts of products are assessed for improvement.

Energy-saving
1. Electricity-saving design
Smart phone is the fastest growing product currently; every brand company asks for new,
light, thin and electricity-saving panels. To meet this demand, HannStar has the new design to
achieve thinner glass, narrow frame, and HUVA1 for electricity-saving.
As for thinner glass technology, HannsStar applied 0.4 mm manufacturing procedures from
0.5mm to become thinner, lighter and decrease 20% usage of the glass materials. Our target is to
reduce 25% more.
As for narrow frame, HannStar has successfully made the IC circuit on substrate so the
invisible area of the edge of the glass was decreased from 2.1mm to 1.5mm and target to have
25% more decrease. With this technology, we further decreased 10% of the IC materials.
As for HUVA, LCD monitor is lighted by backlight module so the panel aperture ratio is the
key to influence the effects of backlight modules. HannStar has successfully made upgrade the
panel aperture ratio 20% and decrease power factor at the same time to have a 20% decrease on
power consumption. Our target is to have panel aperture ratio of 20% or higher.
2. Reduce energy consumption on daily operation

HannStar's electricity of production is 326.22 million KWH, 27.12 million KWH increase
compared to last year. The main reason is the reconstruction for production of color filter lines and
trial run of new production lines.
As for electricity use per unit, we had a 10% decrease from 83.8KWH/M2. We will continue
managing the efficiency.

Waste Management and Recycle
HannStar's returned products like BL4 and PCB5 are all evaluated by specific department for
recycle and reuse. For those unable to fix or recycle we contracted the qualified waste company
to handle. In 2011 the total waste weights 5,290 tons, 844 tons lower (about 14%) compared with
that in 2010.
Waster per unit is 1.19 kilograms / m2 lower than that in 2010 (1.53). Re-use6 rate of waste 3
is higher than 90% in the past 3 years.
HannStar has no significant spills in the reporting period and has never imported/exported
hazardous waste.
11
Compliance on Environmental Regulations
Up to publishing of this report, no environmental protest or violations of environmental
regulations ever happened.
In addition, hereof we clarify the facts that other panel producers in Taiwan discharge waste
water into rivers for a long time and were fined by government. HannStar is in the science park
and the waste water should be legally under sewage control factories in science part. We have
been followed the rules and never discharge in any different way. So there is no relative risk of
violation on illegally discharges waste water for us.
