Soar To New Heights
7th grade students, Monica Baez and Seong Yeon (Rachel) Baik) were recently
honored at Torrance City Hall as recipients of the Tech Trek Scholarship, a
math/science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in
young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall. It features hands-on activities in
math, science and related fields. All sleeping, eating, instructional and recreational
facilities are located on a university campus where camps are held. Tech Trek is
designed to provide every camper with exposure to all core subjects taught, as well as a
selection of rotating labs designed to explore individual specialties more deeply.
Hands-on activities in core classes, rotating labs and field trips at Tech Trek camps help
to make math and science fun as well as educational. Instructors include credentialed
middle school teachers and women currently engaged professionally in math, science or
technology fields. Evening programs could include astronomy, engineering, marine
biology, and environmental studies to enhance the learning experience and introduce
students to a variety of potential career areas.
History Day took place on Friday, June 6th and was a tremendous success. A
huge thank you to Mrs. McCarthy and all of the teachers, and of course, all of the guild
student members. They were all very knowledgeable and dedicated to their specific
guild and remained in character for the entire day. And the costumes were terrific. All
of the guilds included: St. Michaels Guild (congratulations to Julia Kang and Jeremy
Willett for gaining the Queens graces), The Royal Court, The Jester’s Guild, The
Farmer’s Guild, The Torturers’ Guild, The Sappers’ Guild, The Ribbon Guild, The
Embroidery Guild, The Gypsies, The Archery Guild, The Drama Guild, Renaissance
Games, The Medical/Apothecary Guild, The Alchemists and Magical Creatures Guild,
The Helpers Guild, and The Troubadors, Musicians Extraordinaire.
The District CO2 Car Races and Competition took place the evening of June 6 th
in the Gym. Four Torrance Middle Schools had student participation and Torrance
High School and South High School’s Robotics teams were there with machine
demonstrations. It was tremendously competitive and the car designs were quite
impressive. Trophies were rewarded to the top four cars for speed and others for
elegance in design. A big thank you to Tech/STEM teacher at J.H. Hull, Ron Ambro,
and teacher, Joe Petito, from Richardson Middle School for all of their time and effort
with this event.
I want to thank all of the volunteers that have helped on our various school
events throughout the year. Your involvement is greatly appreciated and shows that we
have a strong community backing!!
I want to wish everyone a fantastic summer!!

PTSA President Message
As you read this, the school year is almost to an end! It is also the end of my first year as PTA president at Hull. I will be
continuing on as the president next year. I am proud of the performance and school involvement of this year’s PTSA. I have
been extremely lucky to have a wonderful executive board to work with on the many events and functions. Thank you to those
on the 2013-2014 Executive Board: Desiree Miller, Danielle Nash, Debbie Hays, Carie Mendoza, Nikki Hernandez, Jackie
Mendoza-Seto, Nancy Kacius, Eileen Lizama, Eva Blada, Barry Lafferty, and Teresa Ward.
I also want to thank all our event chairs and volunteers who helped to make our events and activities possible. Taking a
moment to reflect back through the year, the list below shows it was a busy one!
 We kicked off the start of school with a school-wide assembly presented by Camfel Productions.
 Students have enjoyed the newly purchased books from the funds raised at the Fall Book Fair.
 Recognized Student Academic Achievement and positive behavior through Honor Roll Ice Cream Socials and games
offered at the Harvest and Spring Festivals
 Acknowledged our appreciation to Hull staff through Welcome Back Luncheon, Wonderful Wednesdays and Staff
Appreciation luncheon,
 Showed our support for staying drug free through our Red Ribbons.
 Fundraising through magazine and cookie dough sales, Move-athon, After School Ice Cream Sales, Restaurant
Nights, See’s Candy Spring sale.
 Helped provide funds for student field trips to The Body and The Titanic Exhibits, Visit to the USS Iowa, and 6th
grade rocked away at the on-site Science Assembly.
 Honored two special individuals for their volunteerism and dedication to kids and present two past Hull hawks with
scholarships.
 Encouraged the inner artist expressions through our Reflections contest.
Thank you to Rita Perez, June Ward, Margie Ehlers, Shari Dahlmeier and her cast of Wonderful Wednesdays snack
providers, Debbie Hays, Lucy Sheardown, Zoila Norwood, Desiree Miller, Danielle Nash, Carie Mendoza, Walter Seto, Jackie
Seto-Mendoza, Shelley Taniguchi, Lisa Baisle, Val Sato, Eileen Lizama, Nancy Kacius, Yvette Uranda, Denise Zagala, Laiza
Coen, and Lu Gomez. Thank you Eva Blada for stepping up and running the non-chaired Reflections program.
It takes lots of support and compliance to keep a PTA running. This includes documentation of our financial decisions and
meetings, communications including compiling the directory folder distributed the beginning of the year, the Hawk Herald
Newsletters and PTSA eNews via the school website and eBlasts. In addition, financial audits, eScrip and Market
Programs. Thank you to Nancy Kacius, Shelley Taniguchi, Nikki Hernandez, and my financial team. Extra thanks goes out to
Danielle Nash for continuing to take care of eScrip even though her term was up. Very special thanks to Lucy Sheardown for
coordinating the directory folder and sharing your past president experience to help support and guide me through my first
year.
While the list of names I’ve mentioned are small in number, the participation and dedication to our young hawks has been
great. Without these wonderful volunteers there would be no PTA and a less interesting middle school experience for our
children. If I’ve omitted anyone’s name, it was an oversight and not intended. Also, I’ve tried to list ALL the events for this
year, but I may have forgotten a couple.
While this year is coming to a close and we must say “goodbye” to those that graduate from their middle school years, those
of us that remain would like to wish you and your families success as you move on to High School. Thank you Seto, Blada,
Ehlers, Lizama and Perez families for your involvement here at Hull.
In a few months we’ll be hitting the floor running so have a fantastic, relaxing summer and see you on September 4th when
school begins! Drop me a note if you’d like to become more involved with school activities. Contact me with any ideas or
suggestions for next year at [email protected].
