MISSION STATEMENT
Francis T. Maloney High School believes that physical activity enhances educational values and

growth to produce active and contributing citizens to our society. We will always provide

VALUES OF ATHLETICS
Competition
Our entire way of life is based on competition. Every person is competing to improve or
maintain his/her standing.
Physical well-being
The nation is becoming more conscious of the inadequacy of our youth in physical fitness.
Through athletics, a foundation is built for lifelong health through exercise and diet.
Recognition
Student-athletes learn to deal with recognition in a positive manner that reflects humbleness and
perspective. Through the various levels of competition student-athletes can be recognized for
their athletic and academic achievements.
Teamwork
Players working together for a common cause learn to accept victory or defeat in a mature
manner. Team members soon learn how to understand each other and to make adjustments for
the good of the team.
Discipline
People need to learn discipline at a young age. Athletics teach self-discipline-a vital tool to a
successful adult life.
Loyalty
Being faithful to a team, a group, or a cause is an important lesson of athletics. A person will not
fail himlherselfwhen he/she has learned the lesson of being true to others.

Selection of team members is subject to the discretion of the coaching staff and nature of the sport.
Student-athletes are encouraged to refer to the coach for the selection process of a particular sport
and for the levels of participation offered in that sport.
*IMPORTANT: Stndent-athletes CANNOT change sports once contests have begun for that
particular season. If a player wishes to change sports before a season has begun they should contact
the coach of that sport to see if they are still accepting players. A coach does not have to allow a
student to join hislher team for any reason.
7
ATHLETE PARTICIPATION
Introduction
The Maloney High School athletic program is established to offer opportunities for student-athletes to
compete on organized teams or as individuals against student-athletes from other high schools. Athletics
offers a special opportunity for students to perform within the framework of a team situation and to
develop a sense of fair play, sound fundamentals, cooperation, finesse, teamwork, competitive spirit, good
sportsmanship, and pride in themselves and their community. Participants are expected to be good school
citizens and worthy representatives of the Meriden school system.
All student-athletes are governed by regulations outlined by the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic
Conference (CIAC). The CIAC is a membership to which all Connecticut high schools belong and its
organization ensures standardized and fair regulations which all schools must follow. Athletic activities
are further governed by the district's membership in other athletic conferences.
Students and parents should recognize that participation in the athletic program is not a right of all
students, but rather a privilege to those selected individuals who possess the ability, attitude, disposition,
cooperative spirit, and desire to represent the Meriden community in a favorable manner.
As with all school privileges, it is important to remember the school reserves the right to revoke the
privilege of participants who do not conduct themselves in an acceptable manner.
Team Limitations I Tryouts
At times, the structure of athletic teams requires coaches to limit the number of student athletes
representing the school in a seasonal competition. Depending on the number of athletes interested in
joining a team, it may be necessary to make cuts to reduce a squad to a workable size in certain sports.
The athletic coach is the person responsible for selecting student-athletes to compete on a given athletic
team. It is also the Board of Education policy that any issues regarding playing time, or a particular
position a player plays on a given team, should be first discussed between the student-athlete and the
coach.
In addition, a student should select his/her sport carefully as he/she will not be allowed to drop one sport
for another in the same season except with permission of the coach prior to the first game. If an athlete is
cut from one sport, he/she may try for another in the same season.
Athletes will not be allowed to drop a sport in season to tryout for an upcoming sport if he/she was a
member of that sport squad at the time of the first game. In the event he/she drops out after the first
game, he/she will be declared ineligible to participate in another sport until the completion of the season
in progress.
8
Attendance
Student-athletes must attend school on the day of a contest or they cannot compete that day or
evening. An athlete must be in school for 5 consecutive periods in order to participate with
his/her team in any capacity. Students who receive authorized absences (AA) from the office
are eligible to compete.
Hazing
Hazing, initiations, or bullying of student-athletes by other team members is not acceptable, and
any such practice of this type of behavior will not be tolerated. Student-athletes should be aware
that hazing can constitute a violation of Connecticut Criminal Statutes as a form of assault and
can make the student liable for arrest and prosecution, as well as civil liability. Hazing is defined
as any form or type of physical, verbal, and/or emotional mistreatment, abuse, and/or harassment
of a student in connection with a student's participation in or membership on an interscholastic
athletic team or in any school-sponsored activities, and/or forcing, coercing or intimidating any
student to participate in any illegal or inappropriate activities in connection with the student's
participation or membership in the foregoing. Hazing activities of any type are inconsistent with
the educational goals of the school district and are prohibited at all times whether it occurs on or
off school grounds and whether it occurs during, prior to, or after the season or school day.
Reporting Procedures
A. Any person who believes he or she has been the victim of hazing or any person with knowledge
or belief or conduct which may constitute hazing shall report the alleged acts immediately to an
appropriate school district official designated by this policy.
B. The building principal is the person responsible for receiving reports of hazing at the building
level.
Any person may report hazing directly to the assistant superintendent for personnel and
administration or to the superintendent
C. Teachers, administrators, volunteers, contractors, and other employees of the school district
shall be particularly alert to possible situations, circumstances or events which might include
hazing. Any such person who receives a report of, observes, or has other knowledge or belief of
conduct which may constitute hazing shall inform the building principal immediately.
D. Submission of a good faith complaint or report of hazing will not affect the complainant or
reporter's future employment, grades, or work assignments.
9
Substance Abuse
The Board of Education has adopted policies and procedures to implement a program to prevent
the use of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees. These items are consistent with
Section 5145 of the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act as added by Section 22 of the
Amendments of 1989 (P.L. 101-226). Copies of education and prevention programs, along with
standards of conduct including disciplinary sanctions (including expulsion and referral for
prosecution), and rehabilitation options for the mandatory program are available in the principal's
office.
ATHLETICS
PROCEDURES
Extra Assistance
Student-athletes are expected to perform successfully in the classroom while participating on an
athletic team. If a student-athlete is having difficulty academically and receiving a grade of a "D"
or "F" in any of his/her classes he/she must report to that class for a mandatory extra assistance
session. If the teacher is unavailable the student-athlete must attend the Athletic Study Hall that
will be offered every day after school until 2:30 during each season. If a student-athlete fails to
attend one of these sessions after school he/she is not allowed to practice and/or play after
school on that day. The process will be explained to the student-athletes upon their
identification and entrance into the program.
Athletic Equipment & Uniforms
Any equipment issued is the property ofthe school. Proper use and care of this equipment is the
student-athlete's responsibility. All equipment and uniforms will be returned clean and in good
condition in a timely manner when the athlete completes the sport, either at the end of the season
or upon leaving the team. Student-athletes and their families will be held fmancially responsible
for any equipment or uniform damaged or not returned. Any student with an obligation to the
athletic department (i.e. failure to return all equipment, other fmancial debts, etc.) may not
participate in another sport until the obligation is resolved. Failure for the above may also result
in a student-athlete losing the privilege to walk in his/her graduation ceremony.
Lockers should be kept locked at all times to protect your personal and sport equipment. Studentathletes who share lockers with team members must cooperate to maximize security. Studentathletes should use lockers properly. If combinations are lost or not remembered, seek the
coach's advice; do not force or break lockers. The locker room should be kept clean by disposing
trash in the proper receptacles. No storage of food or glass containers in the lockers will be
allowed. Broken glass can cause serious injuries to other students as well as athletes.
10
Transportation
All team members are expected to ride team buses or vans when provided. Students are expected
to be early for departure to prevent the team from being late waiting for late arrivals.
Cheerleaders may ride with teams or have their own bus. Student-athletes must ride school
transportation to practice or contests unless a waiver is signed. It is generally held that teams ride
together to encourage team morale and camaraderie. Exceptions to this rule must be cleared
through the athletic director.
All student-athletes should be picked up promptly after the completion of practice or contests. A
parent will receive a warning the 1st time they are late. Additional tardy arrivals may lead to the
removal of their student-athlete from competing on athletic teams.
Vacations
Vacations by athletic team members during a sport season are very strongly discouraged.
Parents/athletes wishing to do so may wish to reassess their commitment to being a studentathlete. In the event of an absence due to a vacation that is unavoidable, an athlete must:
1.) Contact the head coach by the start of the season.
2.) Be willing to assume the consequences related to their status on that squad in terms of
playing time. (Just because you let the coach know does not mean your position
on the team will not change.)
Christmas, Winter, & Spring breaks are in season and all student-athletes are required to
attend all team functions. If there is a religious obligation the coach must be notified in
advance.
Appearance
All student-athletes are expected to be clean in appearance and neatly dressed at all times. Each
team's coach is responsible for providing direction to acceptable grooming standards. Whenever
a uniform is being worn on a game day all pants should be worn at the waist and appropriate
under garments should be worn with tops, if applicable.
Out of Season Practice
"Captain's Practices" are not allowed by the CIAC or Maloney High School. All student-athletes
must try out for the teams they wish to play. Therefore, captains will not be determined until the
beginning of the respected season.
unsportsmanlike
conduct
Any student-athlete ejected from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct will neither be permitted
to participate in nor attend the next scheduled contest (CIAC ejection rule).
11
Insurance
Procedures for athletic injuries and insurance
1. All injuries which occur while participating on an athletic team are to be reported
immediately to the coach and the athletic trainer.
a. In the event of an accident or injury, your child's coach will complete an accident
report and submit it to the Nurse's Office. Parents must then call and request
insurance forms and a copy of the report.
2. If it is a traumatic injury requiring immediate medical care the coach will follow
emergency medical procedures (i.e. call ambulance, contact the parents, contact the
athletic trainer if it is a home event, etc.)
3. If it is a routine injury such as a sprain, strain, or pull, the athlete should seek an
evaluation from the certified athletic trainer. The athletic trainer will refer the injury, if
necessary, and limit participation when needed.
4. The athletic trainer will then process the injury report. Parents must contact the Nurse's
Office for insurance forms.
a. The Meriden School District provides an insurance program to pay for valid
claims on an "excess basis" for injuries received while participating in the
Maloney High School athletic program.
b. The excess athletic insurance will pay only the usual and customary portion of the
balance of the medical expenses not provided or reimbursed under the other
coverage.
5. Any visit to a doctor for treatment of a sports-related injury must be reported to the coach
and athletic trainer, if it was not previously reported. It is then the student-athlete's
responsibility to return with a written release form from the doctor in order to
return to participation in a sport.
6. If the student-athlete does not report the injury in a timely manner to the appropriate staff,
he/she will be unable to utilize the secondary insurance plan purchased by the school
system.
12
Communication
Throughout an athletic season there are many positive and some negative moments that will
occur. These moments are what make athletic competition so beneficial and meaningful in the
development of our young student-athletes. Many of these situations will have different
meanings for our student -athletes and may bring about issues that need to be discussed and dealt
with. In order to encourage self advocacy for our students we ask that the following procedure be
followed in order to deal with all situations in an appropriate manner.
*Each step must be followed in order to deal with conflicts successfully. Only when a resolution
cannot be met will the next step be needed.
1. Student contact coach
2. Student & Parent contact coach
3. Student & Parent contact AD
4. Student & Parent contact the Asst. Principal in charge of athletics (Don Panciera ext. 115)
No communication
coach.
will be discussed if the student-athlete
has not made contact with the
Issues that will NOT be discussed:
1. Playing time
2. Coaching strategy
3. Other student-athletes
We understand that it is difficult to accept that your child may not be playing as much as
you would hope. As a coach of an athletic team there are decisions that need to be made for
the good of the team as a whole even if an individual may not believe it is in their best
interest. This decision is never an easy one for the coach to make, but it is the coach's
decision alone. The Maloney Athletic Department always encourages what is best for their
student-athletes and if a decision has been made that a student-athlete does not agree with,
it is up to the student-athlete and his/her family to make the decision to continue to
participate.

MALONEY STUDENT-ATHLETE
CODE OF CONDUCT
The Maloney High School Athletic Department recognizes that students who participate as members of
athletic teams should conduct themselves as responsible representatives of their school and community.
Maloney High School's student-athletes must always serve as examples of high moral character and
demonstrate appropriate academic commitment, which is expected from all students. As recognized
members of Maloney High School, student-athletes are expected to conduct themselves both on and off
the field in a way that exhibits respect for themselves and others.
Student-athletes should:
Iii Make every effort to develop their own athletic abilities in terms of skills, techniques, tactics,
and stamina.
Iii Give maximum effort and strive for the best possible performance during a game, even if
his/her team is in a position where the desired result has already been achieved.
iii Make every effort consistent with Fair Play and the Laws of the Game to help his/her own team
win.
iii Know and abide by the laws, rules and spirit of the game, and the competition rules.
iii Attend, and not be tardy, for all practices, games, meets, and program obligations both during the
regular season sessions and during vacations. Exceptions can be approved by the head coach.
Iii Set a positive example for others, particularly young players and opponents
Iii Refrain from using inappropriate language
iii Refrain from using tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, or possessing/using non-prescribed
controlled substances or paraphernalia
Iii Always conduct themselves in an exemplary manner inlout of school, the community, and on the
campus of which his/her team is visiting.
Acts of unacceptable behavior/conduct such as, but not limited to, theft, vandalism, arrest, or any
violation of the law, will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action and possible dismissal
from the athletic team by the coach, athletic director, and/or school administrator.
I/we have read and understand the Maloney Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and will abide by its
guidelines.

MALONEY HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENT-ATHLETE EXTRA AsSISTANCE
Student-Athlete,
fl
You are receiving this packet because you have a grade of a D or below in one or more of
your classes. As a student-athlete you have an obligation to perform in the classroom
before you can participate in athletics. In order to improve your grade in the specified
classes you will not be allowed to enter practice until you have attended an extra
assistance session in the class(es) of which you are performing poorly. This time is set
for you to ask questions, complete homework assignments, study for upcoming quizzes
and tests, and make up missed assignments if the teacher allows it. (The teacher is not
obligated to allow you to make up assignments or create other assignments for you
to complete.)
In addition, at the end of each week, the teacher(s) will complete the section on the form
indicating that your grade has improved. Once your coach has verified that grade, you
will be allowed to enter practice without this signed form. Please take advantage of this
opportunity and use the time wisely. Below are the steps that you will need to follow in
order to successfully complete your Extra Assistance Form:
1) During class, verify that on practice days your teacher will be available after
school. If the teacher is not available have them check the box in the upper
right hand comer, sign, and date. You will need to attend the Athletic Study
Hall on that day.
2) Go to the teacher after school from 2-2:28 and complete work, ask questions,
study, etc. (Attend the Athletic Study Hall if teacher is not available)
3) Have the teacher sign in the box for the day that you went for extra help.
4) Show the signed part of the form to your coach and join practice.
This program was created to improve the classroom achievement of all our studentathletes. We look forward to watching excel in the classroom just as much as you excel in
your sport.
Thank you,
Christopher Meyers
