Address
Omotesando street 5-10-1 Jingumae
Shibuya-ku Tokyo
Japan
http://gyre-omotesando.com/
.
This a new retail building on Omotesando street in Tokyo
designed by Dutch architects MVRDV. Gyre, also known as The
Swirl, is generated from five identical rectangular floor plates
that are rotated on a vertical axis and then trimmed to fit the
site on Omotesando street. Besides the big names and ground
floor tenants, Chanel and Bulgari, the building will house the first
Asian branch of the MoMA Design Store and a large shop for Martin
Margiela. Higher up there are smaller shops like a hair dress
salon, an exclusive watch shop etc. The top levels contain a
series of different restaurants. The interiors of the shops are
designed by the different tenants. From the Gyre website: “A
building in the shape of a gyre is a body in motion, with a
magnetism that exudes energy. Our hope is to become an
incubator of a new way of shopping, thoughtfully, in a way that
becomes a force for good. GYRE connects with your and connects
you to the world.”

Dior Omotesando
Address
Omotesando Street 5-9-11
Jingumae Shibuya-ku Tokyo
Japan
.
Omotesando Street is an avenue in Tokyo and home to many
upscale shops featuring several international brand outlets.
Hence, the street is sometimes referred to as 'Tokyo's
Champs-Élysées'. On this prime location, Japanese architect duo
Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, known collectively as SANAA,
has designed the building that accommodates a store for fashion
retailer Dior. The building is gift-wrapped in a translucent skin
that allows the building underneath to show through. The effect
is achieved by using clear glass on the outside and a second
displaced layer of translucent acrylic on the inside.

.
Haute couture and star architecture have grown to understand
each other rather well in the recent years. Major fashion brands
distinguish themselves by inviting world leading architects to
indulge themselves in the design of flagshipstores and
extravagant showrooms. The highest density worldwide of such
state of the art showpieces can arguably be found on and around
Tokyo's Omotesando. One of the most impressive contributions to
this phenomenon is the Prada 'epicenter'. This 33 meter high
building has a façade like a membrane which is built out of wedge
shaped elements that frame flat, convex and concave windows.
These element also form the outer structure of the building.
Closed horizontal bracings not only make the frame rigid, but also
house the more private dressing rooms within this transparent
building. Everything about the building tells us that money was
not an issue. But perhaps the most costly design choice of all was
to leave a large part of the expensive plot un-built.

Tod's Omotesando Building
Address
Jingumae 5-1-15
Shibuya-ku Tokyo
Japan
http://www.tods.com/
.
Toyo Ito’s Tod’s Omotesando Building is a slender, L-shaped
building for the Italian footwear retailer, it contains offices and a
boutique fronting Omotesando, Tokyo’s famous four-lane,
tree-lined boulevard that in recent years has become the city’s
showplace for luxury brands and top architects. The seven-storey
building continues Ito's exploration of ideas of surface, the
dramatic structure mimicking the shapes of the tall elm trees
that stretch along Omotesando Avenue and reinterprets them in
its façade as a series of crisscrossing geometric forms. The façade
is a smooth blend of concrete and glass and materials are kept
simple. The structural frame that supports the building is well
concealed. Inside, opaque glass hides the rear view so that
shoppers are drawn to the front of the store where they play an
important role in animating the building. (text from RIBA Royal
Gold Medal 2006 award).

Maison Hermès
Address
Ginza 4-1
104-0061 Tokyo
Japan
http://jp.hermes.com/
.
Maison Hermès, Tokyo, by Renzo Piano is the corporate
headquarters and retail store for Hermès Japan. The program
includes offices, workshops, retail and exhibition spaces,
multimedia areas and a roof garden. The building also includes
access to the subway via a courtyard which divides the long
façade in two. It is an elegant, glowing, rectangular form which
has been carefully crafted from specially designed 45cm x 45cm
glass blocks which give the impression of the building as a
precious object containing equally precious objects. Renzo Piano
stated that the building was inspired by traditional Japanese
lanterns. The thickness of the glass façade blurs the activity
within during the day and at night the building glows from the
light within whilst simultaneously providing acoustic insulation
from the bustling Ginza streets outside. Clear glass boxes become
display cases for Hermès products at street level.

Neil Barrett Flagship Store
Address
Minami-Aoyama 3-17-6
208 Tokyo
Japan
http://www.neilbarrett.com/
.
The concept for the Neil Barrett flagship store is based on the
minimal cut of the brand's fashion design and parallels its
approach in using the same design parameters of fixed points,
folding, pleating and cut outs. Rather than defining a single room
or space, the design creates a circular passage allowing the
customer to experience the space in multiple ways and
interpretations. The design of the store plays with the
complementary characteristics and the related dualism between
male and female. The furniture piece on the ground floor is
designed as a strong, masculine and dynamic form whilst the
piece on the first floor enunciates femininity through more fluid
contour lines. The first floor is designed in a more playful
manner. The furniture piece with a white smooth Corian finish is
set against the raw fair faced concrete surface of the rest of the
space. This is accentuated through the contrast in color and finish
of the white matte furniture finish against a black glossy floor.

.
Nicolas G. Hayek was co-founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board
of the Swatch Group. Shigeru Ban wanted all 7 brands to have an
equal opportunity for public exposure. He organized the building
into a stack of three- and four-story volumes, each with its own
set of retractable shutters on the main front, and turned the
lowest volume into a public thoroughfare contiguous with the
sidewalk. Within this four-story, indoor-outdoor passage, he
placed tiny, satellite showrooms, one per brand. Doubling as an
elevator, each showroom connects only to the brand's main shop,
either above or below grade. The boutiques fill the first four
levels (plus part of the basement), followed by three floors for
customer service and six floors of offices topped by a dramatic
event hall overlooking the city in three directions. The airy
interior spaces, unconventional interior-exterior treatment,
simple materials, and fragrant green lobby create an oasis of
unusual calm.

When this building was finished, it functioned as an annex for the
neighboring HHStyle flagship store, designed by SANAA. That's how
it got its name. In January 2008 however, HHStyle have left their
casa and since then new tenants have arrived in the black
bunker. It looks like a bunker, but folded in origami-style. It's an
angular black construction made out of 16 mm steel plates that's
as startling as some of the area's high-fashion apparel. It is
painted with a zinc-based primer fluoropolymer paint. The lease
for the site covered two areas, one for a ten-year period, and one
for half that duration. The architect thus was called upon to
concentrate most of the building on the ten-year plot, leaving a
fair part of the site empty. The building consists of 2 stories plus
a basement. New buildings in Tokyo are not allowed to block
more than a certain percentage of neighbours light, so Ando
crafted the form until he found the ideal solution.

Carina is a children's and mother's clothing store, designed by
Kazuyo Sejima. The shop is wrapped in two façades. The inner
façade is made up of a steel structure and large glass windows.
The outer façade is made out of white expanded metal, similar to
the weaves that were used for the New Museum at the Bowery in
New York. The outer façade covers up almost the complete
building, except for the entrance door and one window on the
second floor. This is a daring approach as it provides an
introspective look at first glance. But, as in many recent
architecture in Tokyo, the shop comes to life when you take a
closer look and even more so when dusk falls over the city.

.
The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor
and one underground floor. Because this building, consisting of
the café wing and the museum wing, was designed to be public
open space within the district plan area, the limitations on the
building area and the sun shadow control were very severe. As a
result, less than 600 square meters are above ground. The
building has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel
plates that slope gently down to the ground. Once inside, the
space opens out on a scale unimaginable given the building's
unobtrusive exterior. The ground floor houses the entrance and
reception area, while the underground floor houses two galleries
and a triangular sunken court. Highlighting Issey Miyake's concept
in clothing design of "A Piece of Cloth," Ando devised the idea for
the roof as one sheet of folded steel. The building incorporates
the longest sheet of double-glazed glass in Japan.

This boutique store is part of the Mikimoto family, one of the
most famous names in Japanese jewellery with a history dating
back to 1899. While the main Mikimoto shop is dedicated to
high-end jewels, this store focuses on casual fashion baubles and
accessories. Ito was inspired by the mysteriousness of a jewellery
box and imagining bubbles around pearls and floating petals. The
building also features a lounge and an atrium, which serves as
both an exhibition hall and as an area for seminars for women.
Painted in a subtly sparkling mica-laced pale pink, the four walls
are a marvel of engineering. Each comprises two 56 m tall steel
sheets; manufactured in sections, welded together on-site, and
installed barely 20 cm apart. With concrete poured between, the
steel is strong enough to support the 9 stories.

Shibuya Station Extension
Address
Shibuya 24-1 Shibuya Nichome

Tadao Ando's Shibuya Station Extension is composed of two prime
gestures: an elliptical shell with the span of 256x79 feet, and the
connection of that shell to elements of Tokyo's underground
station network such as escalators, passages and tunnels, thus
making it an integral part of Tokyo's transportation system.
Tadao Ando's new Shibuya Station extension is all about making
travel fun again: "A station should be a place where visitors think
"I was glad to come to this station" or ?that station was
fascinating","Ando says, as he examines the three-story atrium of
the nearly completed building. Ando's design is based on what he
calls a "chichusen", or underground spaceship. Commuters board
the buried flying saucer near the top of the atrium and are
carried down to the tracks at its base. "Because this station has
an atrium from top to bottom, you can easily see where you
are... it gives you a sense of security," Ando says.

comply with air safety regulations. Built in 1958, the tower's
main sources of revenue are tourism and antenna leasing. Over
150 million people have visited the tower since its opening.
FootTown, a 4-storey building located directly under the tower,
houses museums, restaurants and shops. Departing from here,
guests can visit two observation decks. The 2-storey Main
Observatory is located at 150 metres (490 ft), while the smaller
Special Observatory reaches a height of 250 metres (820 ft). The
tower acts as a support structure for an antenna. It was
constructed of steel, a third of which was scrap metal taken from
US tanks damaged in the Korean War. When the 90-metre
antenna was bolted into place on October 14, 1958, Tokyo Tower
was the tallest free-standing tower in the world.

The National Museum of Western Art is the premier public art
gallery in Japan specializing in art from the Western tradition.
The Museum is located in the museum and zoo complex in Ueno
Park in Taito, central Tokyo. The museum is square in plan with
the main body of the galleries raised on piloti to first floor level.
The layout is influenced by Le Corbusier's Sanskar Kendra museum
in Ahmedabad which was being designed at the same time.
Entrance for visitors is at ground floor level via the 19th Century
Hall. This double height space is lit from above with a north
glazed pyramidal skylight intersected with reinforced concrete
beams and a column. On the opposite side of the hall from the
entrance, the ascent to the paintings gallery is via a promenade
ramp which affords better views of Rodin's sculptures.

Yoyogi National Stadium is an arena in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo, Japan
which is famous for its suspension roof design. It was designed by
Kenzo Tange and built between 1961 and 1964 to house swimming
and diving events in the 1964 Summer Olympics. A separate
annex was used for the basketball competition at those same
games. It will also host handball competitions at the 2020
Summer Olympics. The design inspired Frei Otto's arena designs
for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. The arena holds 13,291
people and is now primarily used for ice hockey, futsal and
basketball. Images of the arena are regularly featured at the end
of NHK Newsline broadcasts because the NHK World studios are
adjacent to the arena along the edge of Yoyogi Park.

"I came to the idea of building a 'pillar of the city' with a meaning
of indirect stimulus... I built this tower with the idea of bringing
urban scale to this dynamic point of the town". -Kenzo Tange In
1966 Tange designed the Shizuoka Press and Broadcasting Tower
in the Ginza district of T?ky?. This time using only a single core
Tange arranged the offices as cantilevered steel and glass boxes.
The cantilever is emphasised by punctuating the three storey
blocks with a single storey glazed balcony. The concrete forms of
the building were cast using aluminium formwork and the
aluminium has been left on as a cladding. Although conceived as
a "core-type" system that was included in Tange's other city
proposals, the tower stands alone and is robbed of other
connections.

Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center
Address
Kaminarimon 2-18-9
111-0034 Tokyo

.
The center extends Asakusa's lively neighborhood vertically and
piles up roofs that wrap different activities underneath, creating
a 'new section' which had not existed in conventional layered
architecture. Equipments are stored in the diagonally shaped
spaces born between the roof and the floor, and by this
treatment we could secure large air volume despite its just
average height for high-and medium-rise buildings. Furthermore,
the roofs not only divide the structure into 8 one-storied houses
but also determine the role of each floor. First and second floor
has an atrium and in-door stairs, creating a sequence from which
you can feel the slope of the two roofs. On 6th floor, taking
advantage of the slanted roof, we were able to set up a terraced
floor with which the entire room can function as a theater. As
angles of the roofs inclined toward Kaminari-mon and the heights
from the ground vary from floor to floor, each floor relates
differently to the outside, giving unique character.

Omotesando is a shopping complex in central Tokyo built in 2005,
in a series of urban developments by Mori Building. It occupies a
two hundred and fifty meter stretch of Omotesando, a shopping
and (previously) residential road in Aoyama, sometimes termed
Tokyo's Champs-Élysées. It was designed by Tadao Ando, and
contains over 130 shops and 38 apartments. The construction of
Omotesando Hills, built at a cost of $330 million, has been
marked by controversy. The building replaced the
Bauhaus-inspired Dojunkai Aoyama Apartments, which had been
built in 1927 after the 1923 Kanto earthquake. The destruction of
the apartments again raised questions about Japan's interest in
preserving historic buildings. A small section of the old
apartments is reconstructed in the South-East part of the new
complex.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building houses the
headquarters of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which
governs not only the 23 wards, but also the cities, towns and
villages that make up Tokyo as a whole. Located in Shinjuku, the
building consists of a complex of three structures, each taking up
a city block. The tallest and most prominent of the three is Tokyo
Metropolitan Main building No.1, a tower 48 stories tall that splits
into two sections at the 33rd floor. The building also has three
levels below ground. The design of the building Kenzo Tange ,
has many symbolic touches, most notably the aforementioned
split which re-creates the look of a Gothic cathedral. The
building held the title of the tallest building in Tokyo, at 243
meters from 1991 to late 2006, when it surrendered its title upon
the completion of Midtown Tower.

Jiyu Gakuen Girls' School is the original building complex of Jiyu
Gakuen, designed by renowned American architect Frank Lloyd
Wright. Impressed by the couple's self-reliant, Christian-oriented
educational philosophy, Wright accepted to undertake the design
of their new school. Built of economical 2 x 4 wood and plaster,
Jiyu Gakuen featured a central section with double-height volume
and soaring windows facing south onto an open courtyard, with
symmetrical wings on the east and west. It was built to child
scale, with an architectural richness belying its budget.
Myonichikan is also given a Japanese touch by Wright's extensive
use of gray-green Oya stone for pavements, columns and the
lanterns standing in the corridors. The Myonichikan consists of
four buildings; the main, the east, and the west buildings and the
auditorium. The main building stands with the two classroom
buildings to the west and the east forming a U-shape.

Century Tower
Address
Bunkyo 2-7-1
113-0033 Tokyo
Japan
.
Century Tower grew out of a belief that the commercial realities
of speculative offices could be reconciled with an architecture of
quality and distinction. Although it advances ideas first explored
in the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, Century Tower is not a
corporate headquarters but a prestige office block with a wide
range of amenities, including a health club and museum.
Located in Bunkyo-ku, in the heart of Tokyo, the building
occupies a site subject to complex zoning regulations. The design
response was to divide the tower into two blocks, nineteen and
twenty-one storeys high, linked by a narrow atrium. The outer
form of the blocks is defined by eccentrically braced frames,
responding to seismic engineering requirements in a city where
earthquakes and typhoons are very real threats. Inside, the
floors are spaced at double height with suspended mezzanines
between them, allowing office spaces to be column-free and to
enjoy natural light and views.

Steel House
Address
Nishikata, Bunko-ku 1chome 1,2
113-0024 Tokyo

.
Using 3.2mm thick corrugated steel plates, a house of monocoque
construction which resembles a freight car was made, with out
having any beams or columns. The client, Professor Hirose, has
been a devoted fan of railroads cars since childhood, and stores a
few thousand models of trains in his home. He himself had
wanted to live a kind of life in a freight-car environment. Fitting
in to the L-shaped site, the house looks like a freight car stopping
on a slope, curving in to an L-shape. The body of the railroad car
was originally designed based on the idea of structure+skin, yet
the division of structure and skin has disappeared, and now is
designed based on the Monocoque structure. In that context, this
house intermediately exists between a railroad car and
architecture. The basic idea of the architectural structure is to
bend the steel plates to gain strength. By bending them, the
detail of the bent parts tells us how soft the material of steel is.
