Business Spotlight - Sponsor of the Month
“Experience the Difference…Taste the Excellence” is more than a slogan.
It's the reason so many area residents and businesses have enabled Mary's Place Restaurant & Catering
to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year!
Just 20 minutes from DuBois, and conveniently located on Route 36, south of Downtown Punxsutawney, the popular business serves Jefferson and Clearfield
counties, as well as Indiana, Clarion, and Armstrong counties with its expanding catering division. A sincere desire to treat each customer with respect and the
staff's willingness to work with anyone, on any budget, at any time, are an integral part of the success of Mary's Place.
Founded by Joyce Farcus, the restaurant features fresh seafood, steaks, Italian entrees, and more. Striving to exceed everyone¹s expectations every day,
Mary's Place is known for its delightful atmosphere, outstanding service, and top quality meals. With each recipe on the menu being either Joyce's own creation
or one passed down from her mother, Mary Marie, the attention to detail and flavors are impeccable.
“Each meal is cooked to order, prepared and served as if it were for us to enjoy with our own family,” she said. We instill this principle in our employees from
the day they begin training: Always assume YOU are the guest you are preparing the meal for or serving." Founder/owner-operated, the restaurant is proud that
its current staff of 20 employees has built an impressive combined total of 85 years of dedicated service to the public.
Likewise, through strong relationships Mary's Place has developed over the past decade with its suppliers, the seafood, USDA Choice beef and garden-fresh
produce can each arrive three times weekly to insure that every meal is made from the freshest and finest ingredients available.
“We have been working with most of the same suppliers since we¹ve opened,” said Josh Farcus, Director of Operations & Catering Services. “It really means
a lot to us to build solid relationships with our purveyors. They know who we are and what our expectations are. Together, we work to provide our customers with
truly satisfying dining experiences each time they visit."
The restaurant consists of seven dining rooms in which tables can be arranged to accommodate almost any size party. For example, what began as an outdoor patio for summer al fresco dining has now quickly become one of the most popular dining rooms year round. The enclosed patio room is very spacious,
seating up to 55 guests in one open area, without sacrificing the Mary's Place charm that guests expect. The room is heated in the winter and air conditioned in
the summer with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
“We¹re very pleased with the flexibility of our enclosed patio room. From bridal showers, to holiday parties, rehearsal dinners or even smaller wedding receptions, the room is truly one of our most attractive features," he added. "After people have hosted one event there,
we find them returning to book the patio room for other get-togethers."
A firm believer in local commerce, Mary's Place supports and sponsors various events in the Punxsutawney
and DuBois communities throughout the year. “If we didn¹t have the support from the businesses and
organizations in this area, we probably wouldn¹t be thriving here today, so that is why we make every effort to
support them in the same way that they have helped us succeed over the past ten years. We¹re too small to be
big and too big to be small. We try to earn everyone¹s business while supporting their business as well,” Josh
added. Mary¹s Place also sponsors over a dozen golf tournaments every year, along with Make-A-Wish and
numerous other charity events in the region.

Let‟s have an „Advertising 101‟ class this month about writing commercials
and what makes a good print ad.
Here are some tips in writing good radio ads that I‟ve learned over more than
three decades of writing commercials. Please understand that the local
radio stations marketing consultants are qualified at assisting you. A well
written script takes a little effort…but is always worth the extra time it takes.
Here are my suggestions…
A simple radio ad formula is a) beginning portion that establishes context,
b) a middle section that delivers the reasons to buy and, c) a conclusion that
delivers the call to action.
Radio ads should feature one or a limited number of items. This means
avoiding spending 60 or 30 seconds of listing prices. The only ad I write on
a regular basis that breaks this rule is a supermarket spot. (Weekly specials
in some cases are important…especially in a price-driven business category). Don‟t confuse the listener. Phone numbers are a waste of valuable
ad time unless you have a new number or can use it to get an order. Keep
information about your location simple. Use the same ad on all the radio
stations. And come up with a “sound signature”…certain music…perhaps a
jingle…or even a sound effect that you use in all ads. Effective radio ads
make an impression. Many highly effective radio spots tell a story. Always
emphasis what is special about your business…why customers should shop
there over your competitors. And never (and I do mean never) end an ad
with…”mention you heard this on (radio station) and receive an extra 10%
off.” That‟s a real turn off (not a test of who hears the ad like many think)
and even if several thousand people hear it…very few if any will bite on the
offer. Would you?
And what kind of print ads work. Again, the local print media has trained
staff members to assist you. I had to learn a lot about print ads when I
started my agency nine years ago…because my background was radio. In a
nutshell…this is what I‟d recommend…
The classic formula for effective print ads is A-I-D-A. A=attention (grab the
reader‟s attention with headlines, type, white space and visuals). I=interest
(make the ad interesting and benefit oriented). D=desire (how does your
product or service benefit the reader---“What‟s in it for me?). A=action (urge
readers to act NOW and make it easy to do so). The golden rule for a print
ad is a really good ad stops the reader from turning the page!
Hopefully these brief answers will assist you in coming up with more effective radio and print ad ideas for your business.
If you‟d like more information about this topics, have a question, or want to
contact the Stormer Agency, email me at [email protected] or call
(814) 590-3968.
This show is FREE to all attendees - no ticket required.

Prospective New Member Night (M-Night)
The DuBois Area Jaycees will be holding an information evening
for prospective new members, call M-Night, on Friday, March 19
beginning at 6 p.m. at the Ft. Worth Restaurant. Enjoy appetizers
and a cold one while learning about this community service group
for people in the DuBois area, ages 21-40. Learn about the numerous causes the Jaycees support financially and in service, how
members build skills in leadership and professional networking,
while making lifetime friends. Anyone is welcome to attend, but
RSVPs would be appreciated to get a count for food by calling 814590-1219.
Props to our Peeps for 2009!
Congratulations go out to Casey Murray, for organizing the Jaycees
Project of the Year in 2009 – the Jaycees Scholarship Reception.
The event was an evening of honoring the value of education, networking, a silent auction fundraiser, and collecting pledges for our
scholarship endowment. This is now an annual event, so look for
announcements on the next Scholarship Reception, slated for Fall
2010. Nick Weyand was awarded the Jaycees Rookie of the Year,
and Nick Suplizio achieved the coveted Jaycee of the Year, as voted
by their peers. Congratulations to all!
Downtown DuBois Matters
By Julie Stewart, Downtown Manager
We are in progress mode in
downtown DuBois! We
hope you can see and feel
the improvements over the
last few years. It‟s not just
about facade projects (there
have been 17!), but about
the quality service at our
stores, the neat atmosphere
of a special restaurant, or
the personal attention you
get at any of your favorite
places. That is what a good
downtown provides. It‟s up
to us as consumers and
businesses to make this
image reality. Part of our
effort to keep our locally or
independently-owned businesses front and center is to
promote a program called
the 3/50 Project.
Distinguished Service Award presented to Dr.
Daniel Gordon
The 2009 Distinguished Service Award (DSA) was presented to Dr.
Daniel Gordon of Reynoldsville at the annual Greater DuBois
Chamber of Commerce Gala held in January. Dr. Gordon was selected for his dedication to the profession, the personal care he
brings to his patients, contribution to this community (especially
the growth of DRMC), and for bringing his medical expertise as a
volunteer to numerous public groups, sports teams and agencies.
Dr. Gordon still maintains a practice as part of DRMC in Reynoldsville. You deserve it, Doc!
Jaycees Community Easter Egg Hunt Slated for

Mark your calendars for this popular community event at City Park
on Saturday, April 3, the day before Easter. Details announced on

Erin Dixon, President
The Downtown DuBois
Revitalization Group,
along with
several other groups and
businesses, are encouraging folks to think about how
and when we support our
locally or independentlyowned businesses. If each
of us participated in the 3/50
Project, the impact on the
Greater DuBois area would
be huge. The concept is
simple, but the message is
powerful! You‟ll see more
about this effort in the coming weeks and months.

Special Thanks To All for A Successful Gala
What a wonderful evening of deserving award recipients, great
foods and beverages, perfect facility and staff, and, of course,
donations benefitting student scholarships. The Chamber’s Annual Gala, held January 30th, just seems to get better each year.
With the crowd of 280+, all seemed pleased to share networking
time with friends and acquaintances. The basket and silent auctions provided the opportunity for everyone to ‘shop’ for some
special items, while helping to provide student scholarships to PA
Free Enterprise Week. Please join us as we again congratulate
our award recipients below, from left to right: Dr. Dan Gordon,

“Creating New Stories of Hope and Success for Children
with Educational and Behavioral Health Issues”
Authored by:
Dr. Paul Volosov, Ph.D. Founder and President of New Story
More than 20 years ago, I attended a conference for people with serious and complex behavioral health disorders. After listening to a
number of speeches discussing the need for high-quality services for
children with special needs, I thought to myself, “this should be a
given.” Children with educational and behavioral issues deserve to
have easy access to high-quality services. More importantly, they
need the opportunity to live a good life. As an industry, we need to
focus on creating environments that provide children who have the
most serious and complex behavioral challenges the opportunity to
create new stories of growth and success.
With the prevalence of autism in the U.S. significantly increasing in the
last decade, from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100, we are seeing a greater demand for effective services and programs designed to meet the needs
of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). During the 20072008 school year, Pennsylvania had more than 14,000 autism cases
in public schools (according to Fighting Autism) -- further underscoring
the need for effective programming and support in this region.
For more than a decade, New Story (formerly Milestones Achievement
Centers of America and Milestones Community Healthcare), a leading provider of private schools and services in Pennsylvania, has
helped children with the most serious and complex behavioral and
educational challenges live good lives. We recently changed our
name to “New Story” to better reflect what we do each and every day - create an environment where children can grow and succeed, regardless of their challenges.
Through our schools and services, we change people‟s lives and give
them an opportunity to lead a high-quality life in ways they never
thought possible. We welcome each child into our family and provide
them with a comprehensive and individualized program -- teaching
them the necessary skills needed to create new stories of hope and
success.

First Media Radio
First Media Radio - DuBois is proud to serve the area with four
great radio stations. According to a new study by the Nielson
Company, over 77% of Americans listen to radio every day. With
our radio stations we provide advertisers the ability to reach
audiences listening to four different formats and four different
demographics of the population in our area.
First Media Radio - DuBois was proud to start their DuBois
operation in 2002 with the ownership and operation of the area's
great heritage country station, Q102. Since 1948 and during that
time becoming "Q102", 102.1 on your FM dial has always
been country. Today country is the number one format in the U.S.
and right here in the DuBois market as well. Q102 also is the
home of DuBois High School Football, Pittsburgh Steelers Football,
and a long time tradition in the area, "The Sunday Morning Polka
Party with the Big Moose"!
Next came the addition of two great stations, WQYX, 93.1 QYX FM
and WCPA, News 900 AM. 93.1 QYX plays Hot Adult Contemporary, all the hit music of today, and WCPA has a focus on news in
the mornings and the "oldies" throughout the rest of the day. Both
stations are the home of Clearfield Bison Football, Basketball and
Wrestling and Penn State Football and Basketball.
In April of 2009 First Media Radio began the operation of a new
station in the market, WZDB, 95.9 ZDB. Rockin the Northern
Alleghenies with all of your classic rock favorites, 95.9 ZDB has
quickly become the favorite station for those who like to rock!
John Boy & Billy host the morning show, enjoy long blocks of
classic rock throughout your work day and world famous Alice
Cooper rocks you in the evenings.

An example of this occurred when a twelve year old child with severe
autism called out to his mother while he was in the living room and
she was in a different room, and he said, “hey mom, what are you
doing?” Her son had initiated a conversation with her for the first time
in his life. She was completely floored -- calling it a miracle! She attributes his success to the speech therapy he receives at New Story.
To show our dedication to the communities we serve and to help support families facing challenges, including autism spectrum disorders
(ASD), emotional support needs, mental retardation or other developmental disabilities, New Story recently announced the “New Story
Fund.” The Fund will grant $50,000 each year ($25,000 disbursed
twice a year) to help families throughout Pennsylvania who don‟t have
the funds to access goods and services needed to best support their
children. For more information about the Fund, or to nominate a family, please visit www.newstory.com/fund.
Our goal is to create many successful new stories in the coming year
and continue to grow and expand our offerings to better serve our
children. Together we can create a very powerful “New Story” and
help children with autism related and other challenges live good lives.
