“I bow before the mercy of the Lord,
who willed that Armenia should become,
in the year 301, the first nation to
accept Christianity as its religion.”
POPE FRANCIS

REMEMBRANCE, WITNESS, AND RESURRECTION
O
ver 800 people gathered
at the Cathedral of the
Holy Cross of the Boston
Catholic Archdiocese, on
Saturday, April 23, for the first-ever
Ecumenical Service commemorating
“the Holy Saints and Martyrs of the
Armenian Genocide.”
The head of the Boston Roman
Catholic Archdiocese, Cardinal Sean
P. O’Malley, was accompanied by
dignitaries from various churches and
organizations, including Archbishop
Khajag Barsamian of the Diocese of
the Armenian Church of America
(Eastern),
Archbishop
Oshagan
Choloyan of the Eastern Prelacy of
the Armenian Church of America, as
well as clergy from all local Armenian
Churches, and heads of the local
Eastern Catholic Churches, and others
for the service, titled “Remembrance,
Witness, and Resurrection.” Fr. Arakel
Aljalian and St. James deacons, altar
servers and choir members took part
in the service as well.
In his sermon, Cardinal O’Malley
drew attention to God’s steadfast
love for his people, saying, “It is that
faith, that memory, that conviction,
that allows us to recall the genocide
of a century ago, and to know that the
love and power of God is stronger than
death. Christ’s cross has conquered sin
and death for us.”
He added, “Today we are all
Armenian. We must learn to see
human suffering with the eyes of
compassion.”
Several hymns were performed by
a large chorus composed of members
of Armenian choirs, led by our own
Maestro Artur Veranian. A reception
followed in the Cathedral High School
Gymnasium.

POPE FRANCIS IN ARMENIA
J
une marked a historic event for the Armenian people,
as His Holiness Pope Francis made his first visit to our
homeland from June 24-26. Themed “A Visit to the
First Christian Nation,” the Pope’s three-day journey
included a prayer service in Yerevan’s Republic
Square and a stop at the Dzidzernagapert Genocide
Memorial. Pope Francis and His Holiness Karekin
II, Catholicos of All Armenians, also presided over a
Holy Mass in Gyumri’s Vartanants Square. The visit
culminated with Divine Liturgy celebrated at the
Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin on Sunday.
Last year, Pope Francis celebrated a Mass in St.
Peter’s Basilica in Rome to commemorate the
100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. In an
exquisite service in the Armenian rite, the leader of the
Roman Catholic Church offered prayers in memory
of the Armenian martyrs of 1915, and expressed his
profound solidarity with the Armenian people in their
historic struggles and continuing aspirations.

ACYOA JUNIORS HYE M’RTSOOM
Memorial Day weekend at St. James is the highlight of the
year for our ACYOA Juniors, as they host ACYOA Juniors
from throughout the Diocese for the annual Hye M’rtsoom
Junior Sports Weekend. This year marked the 41st Hye
M”rtsoom, as we hosted 211 participants from 14 parishes,
including parishes in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia,
and throughout New England.
The theme of this year’s Hye M’rtsoom was “Stronger
Together,” selected by our ACYOA members as they
reflected on the first year following the Armenian Genocide
Centennial. The theme focused on how they are truly
stronger when they gather in Christ’s name, bonded by their
faith and their Armenian culture.
We were fortunate to have many special visitors
throughout the weekend, including our Primate Abp. Khajag
Barsamian, Diocesan Vicar V. Rev. Fr. Simeon Odabashian,
and several Diocesan clergy - who joined together for a
game of volleyball against the coaches on Saturday morning!
Jennifer Morris, Diocesan Director of Youth and Young
Adult Ministry, was also present throughout the weekend.
On Saturday morning after morning service, the
participants were excited to receive a visit from Houry
Gebeshian, a native of Massachusetts and the first female
Armenian gymnast to represent Armenia in the upcoming
summer Olympics. Houry delivered an inspiring message
to the participants, describing her journey to the Olympics
- which was not without its challenges - encouraging the
youth to work hard and never give up in order to reach their
goals.
The sports competitions began on Saturday, with teams
competing in volleyball, basketball, and individual sports.
Halfway through the sports, participants gathered in the
kitchen to make more than 300 sandwiches for the Pine
Street Inn in Boston. Once the sports concluded for the
day, participants headed home for dinner with their host
family and then back to St. James for an evening dance and
activities.
Sunday began with participants filling the church
sanctuary as they gathered for worship. V. Rev. Fr. Simeon
Odabashian, Diocesan Vicar, delivered a sermon on the
ԼՈՅՍ ԼՐԱԳԻՐ | ԱՄԱՌ 2016
weekend’s theme, “Stronger Together.” He emphasized the
importance of working together as an Armenian Christian
community. After services, everyone gathered to watch the
intense sports finals. Congratulations to our boys basketball
A team for winning the first place trophy! On Sunday
evening, participants gathered at St. James for dinner and
an awards ceremony and enjoyed dancing to Armenian and
American music.
Monday morning, everyone gathered for a farewell
breakfast before heading back to their parish communities.
Sincere thanks are in order to all who volunteered,
supported, and helped make this year’s Hye M’rtsoom a
great success. The example of those who gladly offered their
time to serve our Church has left a lasting impression on our
youth. Our youth are fortunate to have such a supportive St.
James family, who took the time to volunteer during sports,
prepare meals, and volunteer in so many ways to make the
weekend memorable for everyone.
Much appreciation goes out to all the parents who
graciously opened their homes to our guests and cared for
them as they would their own children, to St. James leadership
and organizations, who so willingly took on responsibilities
and tasks to make everything run so smoothly, and to our
area parishes for their support whenever needed. We
couldn’t have done it without you!

ST. JAMES EREBUNI ARMENIAN SCHOOL
he St. James Erebuni School has
never been bigger! In the 2015-2016
academic year, we had 11 Eastern
and 4 Western Armenian classes
ranging from preschool to seventh
grade, Chess club, and regular music
instruction. Our wonderful teachers
continue to invest themselves in
their students’ education, going
beyond basic classroom instruction.
This year, classes enjoyed field
trips to the Armenian Museum of
America and the Edgerton Center
at MIT. We also enjoyed a visit
from author Stephen Kurkjian. In
the spring, we hosted the New
England
Armenian
Teachers’
Seminar, during which our teachers
Mayda Yetimian, Annie Kalaydjian,
Rita Meneshian, Anna Kupelian,
Nelli Harutyunyan and Principal
Armine Manukyan were awarded
Certificates of Appreciation from the
Diocesan Department of Armenian
Education for valuable contributions
to Armenian Education and Culture.
Our wonderful parents also
continue to support the school in
various ways. Gary Markosyan has
put together a Math enrichment
class, and a possible Robotics class is
being discussed. This past year, for
the first time in its history, the school
began the publication of a monthly
newsletter, presenting classroom
news and events the school’s
community. The year concluded
with our June recitals, and we
celebrated the end of the year with
a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon,
which is becoming an annual
tradition. The future has never been
brighter for our school and we look
forward to the coming school year!
To learn more about the school
and become part of our community,
we invite you to join us at the
school’s annual family picnic
on August 27, and urge you to
consider registering your children
for the fall semester, scheduled to
begin on September 10 (contact
Principal Armine Manukyan at
[email protected]
for details).

Sunday School GRADUATION
S
ome were the first of the siblings: Alec, Jacob, Matthew T.,
Lydia; some were the last of the siblings: Christopher, Anna,
Ben Harry, Gregory, Michael, Lori, Lydia, Ani, Eric; some
were middle siblings: Nairi, Matthew P., and one, Nareg, an
only sibling; coming to St. James at a young and tender age
to become a new family of brothers and sisters, taking the
journey together through the years of Sunday school.
Sunday, June 5th, this new family of siblings culminated
their formal Sunday school years, renewing their Baptismal
vows, receiving their diplomas, sharing memories of their
past and visions of their future.
Following the presentation of their diplomas, Fr. Arakel,
in his sermon, thanked and congratulated the graduates
for their commitment to their church, their faith and their
religious education. He spoke of continuing their education,
being true to themselves, remembering who their family is,
where they have come from, choosing good friends, having
dreams and being happy. He reminded them that St. James is
their home, always there for them.
Immediately following Divine Liturgy, a short program
and reception was held in Keljik Hall. Salutatory speeches
were given by Alec Maserejian and Lydia Thompson and
the Valedictory speech was given by Nareg Kalaydjian. In
their speeches, they spoke of coming to Sunday school at an
early age, the excitement then, the years that followed when
it became difficult, and the appreciation and happiness of
becoming a graduate of St. James Sunday School. They spoke
fondly and with thanks for their teachers and the family of
friends they will always have. They spoke of the lessons
learned, the faith built and the foundation that will support
them going forward. A slide show prepared by Matthew
Reppucci with each graduate sharing a thought of their
Sunday school years was presented.
A lovely reception was prepared and hosted by Sunday
school parents, past and present. Our sincere thank you to all.

ay 16th marked the date of the 17th Annual
St. James Golf Tournament, hosted by the
St. James Men’s Club. The tournament
took place at the Oakley Country Club in
Watertown with 104 golfers, 75 sponsors,
and a wonderful group of volunteers. The
weather was sunny but cool and the golfers
and volunteers toughed it out on the difficult
course with great team spirit.
Ron Tashjian and Dick Janjigian chaired the
committee of Men’s Club members who
gathered sponsors, gifts, and golfers. The
post-golf dinner consisted of a full Armenian
Mezza and the proverbial Chicken and Pilaf
dinner. The evening ended with prizes for
golfers, a raffle, and a silent auction. Sadly,
there was no Hole-in-One for the day. The
tournament raised in excess of $19,000.
Special thanks go to the overall tournament
sponsor, the Atinizian Family and also to
our special donor, Ed Keljik.

t is customary in the Armenian Church
to provide “Yughakin” especially around
the feasts of Christmas and Easter. This
practice dates as far back as the time of Moses
in the Old Testament. Yughakin in Armenian
means “price of oil” — “Yugh” meaning oil
and “kin” meaning price. Each local church
community would donate money specially
earmarked towards the purchase of oil, which
in return would keep the lanterns burning and
ultimately the doors open of the church. With
gratitude to those who made donations to St.
James during the Easter season.

PASTORAL CARE: HOME AND HOSPITAL
CLERGY VISITS
The clergy are always available and would like to
visit homebound and hospitalized parishioners.
If you or someone you know is ill or hospitalized
and would like to be visited, please call the church
office at (617) 923-8860. Please note: when asked
about your religion at a hospital, patients should
list themselves as “Armenian Orthodox” or
“Armenian” not “other.”
REQUIEM SERVICE/HOKEHANKISD
Arrangements for Requiem Service, Altar Flowers
and Candles should be made through the church
office by Thursday at noon. In accordance with the
canons of the Armenian Church, Requiem Services
may not be performed on the five major feast days:
Armenian Christmas, Easter, The Feast of the
Transfiguration, The Feast of the Assumption of
the Mother of God, and The Feast of the Exaltation
of the Holy Cross.
ST. JAMES ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH
465 Mt. Auburn Street, Watertown, MA 02472
Please rush, dated material
BAPTISMS AND CHRISMATIONS
All baptisms must be scheduled at least two months
in advance by calling the church office. According
to the Armenian Church canons, a Baptism may
only be performed once in a person’s lifetime,
provided such Baptism has been performed in
a Christian Church and in the name of the Holy
Trinity.
At least one of the godparents must be a member of
the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church.
WEDDINGS
Parishioners should contact the church office at
least eight months in advance. A couple must
contact St. James to confirm the availability of the
Pastor and sanctuary prior to making any other
arrangements.
All weddings must follow the Canons of the
Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church and the
laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In
accordance with Diocesan discipline mandated by
the Primate, all Sacraments must be performed in
the church sanctuary.
The couple must meet with the Pastor at least
once for pre-marital preparation and counseling.
Weddings cannot be performed during Great Lent
or Holy Week, or on the five major feast days:
Armenian Christmas, Holy Easter, The Feast of the
Transfiguration, The Feast of the Assumption of
the Mother of God, and The Feast of the Exaltation
of the Holy Cross.
FUNERALS
Families should make arrangements with the
funeral director of their choice, who will contact
the church office to arrange the funeral service.
Generally, St. James coordinates funerals with
Bedrosian Funeral Home and Giragosian Funeral
Home; both are located in Watertown and are
familiar with our Church traditions.
Funerals may not be performed on religious
holidays, major feast days, Saturdays after 3:00
p.m., or on Sundays.
