Thread YARDAGE NEEDED From pre-washed fabrics: 2 sets of ¼” eyelets PANELS 1¼ yard SHOULDER, HOOD 1 yard +POCKET TERRY CLOTH 2¼ yard TOOLS --DIMENSIONS-fold SHOULDER STRIP HOOD 14” cut: 1 exterior 1 lining cut: 1 exterior 1 lining 44” 14” PANEL (Front + Back) 11” POCKET cut: 2 exterior 2 lining 31” cut: 1 exterior 1 lining Step 1 contains detailed cutting instructions FINISHED PIECE 11” s e lve dge fold n ld o ld li 22” f o f Fold the opposite corner diagonally up to mark. Some fabric motifs will require a shift of the fold line for centering, be sure to trim the same amount from shoulder strip ends so that the lengths remain even. Repeat the same on the remaining fabric for the second panel. e To cut out the front and back panel triangles, fold fabric then measure 22” up the folded edge + mark. fold 1 Cut both interior and exterior according to the following, then trim ¼” for stretch fabric (⅛” for non-stretch) from all edges of lining pieces. You will now have a folded triangle, cut as shown to separate the triangle from the rest of the fabric. Print neckline and hood curves from patterns provided, cut from paper. Align end points of neckline curve to marks + the right angle to the corner of the fabric. fold Cut shoulder strip rectangle from fabric. Keep piece folded down the center, mark as shown. 9¾” 1” Trace + cut out neckline. f o ld Measure your child’s armspan from wrist to wrist + trim excess fabric evenly from fold You may need to adust the size of the pieces for better fit. For example Total armspan= 40” Trim folded shoulder strip length to 20” Trim 2” from bottom of panel pieces (+ trim pocket piece to 10x10”) Cut hood piece from fabric (to leave room to cut the pocket, forego the original bolt fold + fold just 14” over, keeping selvedges parallel. Cut square from there.) 7” Keep piece folded at the top, mark as shown. Align hood curve to marks + corner of fabric. 3 7” Trace + cut curve from hood. Next, cut pocket diamond from remaining fabric, matching the grain of the shoulder strip. Measure down 3” from either side of the top corner of the pocket as shown. Connect the two marks and cut along this line. You should now have: 2 2 exterior panels 2 panel linings 1 exterior shoulder strip 1 shoulder strip lining 1 exterior hood 1 hood lining 1 pocket exterior 1 pocket lining 3 Begin with the exterior hood flat, measure in 2” along each end of the bottom edge + mark 1½” from edge. Iron a small scrap of fusible interfacing onto the wrong side of the mark for strength. • • • • • • Insert an eyelet or sew a buttonhole over these marks for the hood pull strings. On both exterior and lining Fold hood piece wrong sides together along top fold line. Sew from fold down along back seam of hood, like so 1” • • • • • • • • • • • • fold fold ends here Ease into the curve to avoid a point at the top of the hood. start sewing here Next, run a machine basting stitch through the bottom seam allowance at ¼”, then gather hood slightly to fit the length of the neckline. • Clip bulk from seam. Turn + press. Concentrate the gather toward the back neck and decrease toward the front. Line hood seam line up with center mark of neckline on shoulder strip, right sides together + pin. Continue pinning hood to the curve of the neckline from the center out. Leaving ½” unsewn at either end, sew around curve. These excess seam allowances will be used to attach the front panels and join the hood hems. Use ½” seams. Press seam open. Layer pocket exterior and lining right sides together, Sew around the three shorter top edges. 4 Clip out the excess at the corners of the seam allowance, turn pocket right side out + press flat. Topstitch ⅛” and ½” from the edge of the two slanted sewn sides, leaving the middle section unsewn. Baste the two open edges at the bottom together at ¼” Find the front exterior panel piece and position it right side up. Align the bottom point of the pocket up with the bottom point of the front panel + pin. Topstitch along top edge of pocket to join it to the front panel, beginning down about ½” along pocket opening and finishing ½” down opposite opening. Baste bottom point of pocket to exterior front along previous baste line. 5 • • • • • • On both exterior and lining • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • With hooded shoulder strip facing right side up, layer long side of back panel piece right side down to back edge of shoulder strip + pin. Sew + press seam up towards shoulder. Next, layer front panel piece to front edges of shoulder strip. in Pin from the sides to ensure proper alignment of neckline. Sew + press seams up. True up the seam allowances at each corner. Turn exterior inside out and lining right side out. Layer together with exterior on top, right sides facing each other. Align all edges and seams. Beginning on the back panel, sew around perimeter, leaving a 7-10” opening. Clip out corners. Turn poncho right side out through the opening at the hood hems (not the opening you just left.) Lining is tucked into the exterior, push out all corners + press seams flat. 6 Pin around entire perimeter of poncho. Next, reach through the back panel opening + pull through the hood exterior and lining. Clip bulk from seam allowance + turn hood back to right side out. Line up edges of hood hem, pin + sew from neckline to neckline. 7 Handstitch openings at back panel and neckline closed + press all seams flat. Then topstitch around the edges ½” from edge of fabric. Also topstitch across shoulders ½” from seams. On the side with the hood, topstitch up one arm, continue the ½” along hood hem and then down the other arm. Then, using a zipper foot to avoid the eyelets, topstitch 1½” from edge of hood hem only. Eyelets or buttonholes will be centered in the channel. Feed your shoelace through one eyelet and out the other. Finish off ends as desired. CONGRATULATIONS! YOU’VE FINISHED YOUR COVER UP!
