We have already conducted multiple camps and everyone has had a blast! This year we are having three different types of camps: • “Prep Camps” • “In-Season Camps” • “Cool –Down Camps” The “prep” camps will cover goals, preparation, and prepping the juniors to get emotionally and mentally ready for summer golf. The “in-season” camps are all about playing the game. Here we help them understand practice rounds, how to practice to really get better, how testing themselves is a part of the learning process, and getting around the course in the fewest strokes possible. The “cool-down” camps are about preparing for the off season. By setting the appropriate process goals, establishing the importance of building skill, and taking care of their body in the off season, they will be even more prepared for the following season of golf. We have a full list of 2015 camp dates at http://oldwaverly.com/teaching-center/ junior-golf-cottage/ If you would like to sign-up your junior golfer, you can reach us at tyelverton2002@ gmail.com or [email protected] LODGING Lodging at Old Waverly is available 7 days a week - whether for the business client or a personal get-away. The great majority of young people have never seen a Bluebird. Yet, 50 years ago, Bluebirds were among the most common song birds in America. The Eastern Bluebird range once covered the entire eastern United States, west across the Great Plains where they meet the Mountain and Western Bluebird; however, with the obstacles mankind has created for them, their population has declined almost 90% in the past 50 years. The Old Waverly Bluebird Restoration Project was begun in 2008 by Bill Colloredo, Cecil Chiles, and Jerry Ishee. There are 35 Bluebird houses throughout the golf course. Typically Bluebirds start searching for houses in the middle of March and building a nest by April 1st. They are monitored every week or 10 days when nesting begins. The Restoration Project has been a huge success with over 1,000 Bluebird fledglings since 2008. Young Bluebirds are naked upon hatching and remain so for several days. They are fed small soft insects every few minutes from dawn until dusk. Within 12 days the fledglings are almost adult size and natal down has been replaced by adult feathers. They are now fed larger insects - grasshoppers making up a large part of the diet of young and adult. The young can fly 50 to 100 feet on their first flight and do not return to the nest. The male usually takes charge of caring for the young while the female re-nests sometimes in a matter of hours. CONGR AT U L ATIONS! Download our FREE Old Waverly App for news & updates. LAWN & GARDEN Also, please send us your pictures and each month we will add a few to the app and also the newsletter! Recognized for April is the Mansfield home at 1944 Elmview. Jim and Deborah have expanded their front beds, adding a new sweep of azaleas and other plantings completed by the newly expanded lawn. May’s Lawn & Garden award goes to Rod and Carrie Drake. The Drakes updated the facade of their home at 2150 Camellia Cove and created handsome planting beds that surround the entire home. TIPS FROM THE TEE Over the past few months we have been discussing the cornerstones of great putting. When we hit a putt, there are only four things we can control or influence: • The initial path the ball starts rolling on-direction • How far the ball travels-distance • The line we choose to start the ball on- green reading • Our conscious thoughts while we are over the putt-routine This month, we address the final piece—routine. This is arguably the most important piece of the puzzle. If our mind is a variable…then we have no idea why we make putts or miss putts. In theory, having a solid routine should be very simple. You don’t have to be a great athlete, clubhead speed does not matter, and age is irrelevant. However, we all know how emotional we can get on the golf course. Some rounds we hole a ten foot par putt on the first green and the hole looks like it’s the size of a basketball. Other times we three-putt the first and it’s like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole! Every good routine has three things: • A trigger to start the routine • Predetermined amount of looks at the target • “Words” to say/think during the routine For example, my routine starts when I put my left hand on my left hip pocket (trigger). I always look at my target twice (looks). While I am doing this, I say to myself, “look, look, go” (words). Your routine should be your own. By no means am I saying to copy mine. It should fit your style or personality. However, it must be defined for you to repeat it. OLD WAVERLY JUNIOR GOLF FUNDRAISER We would like to thank all of you that played and supported the Junior Golf Foundation at Old Waverly. The teams consisted of four amateurs and one junior golfer. We would like to congratulate the team of Jimmy Galloway, Kyle McConnell, Al Puckett, Marcus Mallory, and Dalton Ford. They fired a 61 to take home the victory! Our mission and goals could not be achieved without your support. It truly is a team effort, and we are very proud of what we have to offer these junior golfers. We have a complete list of camp dates for 2015 on Old Waverly’s website. http://oldwaverly.com/teaching-center/junior-golf-cottage/ LOCKERS ARE AVAILABLE Half and Whole.
