Woodside
Gil Tansman, County Area CA
I turned with my back to the setting sun. A breeze blew off the
water. Trefoil. That herbaceous aroma that beckons lovers of spring
and summer to come hither. The river shimmered, and a solitary
winged-sentry examined her prospects. The onset of dusk, I knew
I’d become bread and butter for the onslaught of hungry mosquitos,
but I gave myself five more minutes before bolting up the hill.
“Woodside,” a strange name considering its proximity to the suburbs, is a local refuge. An escape, from papers and library nights,
deadlines and streetlights.
Cruise across College Avenue/Rt. 15, tramp over the train tracks and
burrow into the backwoods of this mini wilderness.
To access Woodside, cross College Avenue/Rt. 15 at Barnes. Woodside Drive descends and curves toward the train tracks.

Meet the New County Area CA’s!
Hi Folks! My name is Lizzy Gomez. I am a 1st year masters student in the Higher Education & Student Affairs Program.
I was born in Southern California and lived there most of my
life. This is my first time being on the East Coast away from family, friends and everything I love.
Living in Vermont will be a big adventure and I can’t wait!
Before moving here I attended UC San Diego and graduated
with two degrees in Critical Gender Studies and Ethnic Studies.
While an undergrad I was involved in grassroots activist organizations that prioritized social justice and education equity and I
discovered what was important to me which led me to where I
am now.
I enjoy hearing people’s stories and the lessons they have
learned along the way. I think it is important to share the knowledge that each one of us
carries because it is a way that strong communities are created. By hearing your life lessons and what matters to you and also sharing my stories, I hope to foster community
here at AFH.
Apart from that, I am pretty creative and enjoy painting, hand crafting cards, scrapbooking, and I recently started pyrography, which is wood burning. I like to do this to de-stress
or for special occasions. If you would ever like to join me, feel free to let me know!
I am happy to be part of the AFH family! and hope to get to know everyone on a personal
level. I can’t wait to see you around!
Lizzy is the CA for: 32 University Lane, 34 University Lane, 35 University
Lane & units 127 & 128 in 21 University Lane

Blithe Milks is starting her third year of the two-year English program. She, her husband
Bryn, and 8 year old daughter, Alex, welcomed
Atticus to the family last August, hence the additional year.
Blithe was born in Vermont, but has lived in NJ,
Chicago, and Connecticut. She is happy to call the
Green Mountain State home once again, but travelling the country is still a pastime she likes to pursue.
Before becoming a CA, having a family, and earning her BA, Blithe held lots of jobs in lots of industries. Ask her about her favorite job and depending on the day she may say, "trolley tour
driver", "medieval arms dealer", or something as mundane as "shotgun manufacturer."
Blithe shares her husband's passion for potluck suppers and her children's curiosity
about ... everything. Blithe is looking forward to helping everyone love AFH as much as she
does.
Blithe is the CA for: 24 Catamount Lane, 38 Catamount Lane, 33 Catamount
Lane & 21 University Lane (except for units 127 & 128)

MEET ETHAN ALLEN AREA’S AMBERLY, AARON & BABY
CORDELIA
Amberly and Aaron moved here
from Seattle when Aaron started
medical school at UVM.
Amberly grew up in Wyoming and
then Oregon. Aaron spent his whole
life in Seattle and was looking to get
to know another part of the country.
Aaron is now in his fourth year of
medical school and will be applying
to radiology residencies in Boston in
September.
Amberly works at the front desk in
outpatient cardiology at Fletcher
Allen and hopes to go back to school
to get a degree in accounting.
Aaron and Amberly have a beautiful
baby girl named Cordelia who
turned 1 on August 3rd.
In their free time they enjoy everything family-oriented, walks in the
evenings and gardening on the
weekends at the lovely community
garden.
Amberly loves to cook international
cuisine with their gardens produce
and Aaron enjoys the eating part!
Some fun things to know about this
lovely couple: before children, Amberly had a mohawk in every color
and Aaron wrote music on the guitar. Now he learns children’s songs
to play to Cordelia.
If you see them out on their nightly
walks say hello and wish Cordelia a
happy first birthday!
MEET COUNTY AREA’S BLITHE, BRYN, ALEX (&
BABY ATTICUS NOT PICTURED HERE)
“Gumption! That comes from the
Yiddish, goshtim, right?!”
“No honey, it comes from old Scottish, from gemp! And before that,
from Scandinavian. We’re Scandinavian…like 400 years ago.”
I’d walked into their apartment at a
quarter to one. By 12:48 we were
committed to an etymological debate that spanned three continents
and five centuries.
Bryn was at work, but Blithe and
her mother were engaged in getting
eight-year-old Alex ready for sleep
away camp. While searching for
flashlights and packing tape, they
entertained me with sarcasm and
sincerity.
“My mother is the etymologist and
the genealogist,” Blithe
informed
me.
Her mother
countered, “I am the
child-minder and the factotum.”
Blithe’s mother, Judith, spends a lot
of time with Alex and nearly-oneyear-old Atticus.
Bryn works at Opportunities credit
union and Blithe is studying English
at UVM.
Blithe and Bryn were the first to
welcome me to my new apartment
when I relocated from East County,
and are some of the warmest folks
at AFH.
Even their kids are socialites. While
I chatted with Blithe and Judith
about family and school, Alex lectured me about the merits of Girlscout camps that have equestrian
programs, and Atticus settled the
territory around my ankles.
“Gil, make sure you use the bathroom before we start driving,” Judith joked, indicating that their departure to Alex’s camp was imminent.
I excused myself to the relative quietude of my apartment as packing
concluded.
If one ever sees the Milks family,
give them a big hello. You are guaranteed one in return.

MEET COUNTY AREA’S JAMES HODGES
James is beginning his third year at
AFH.
He lived on Redstone for a year before joining us, and plans on staying
for the rest of his 5 year PhD program in Experimental Psychology.
We talked about what an Experimental Psychologist is versus a Clinical Psychologist.
Rather than helping individuals, experimental psychologists get to
make hypotheses about human behavior in certain situations and then
test those hypotheses.
