 „Project Cinema Jenin“
Our supporters
Built in the early 60‘s, Cinema Jenin (West Bank) was
considered to be one of the largest and most impressive
cinemas in Palestine. Hundreds of people attended it
daily to watch films from the Arab world. Later, it started
presenting action films and American B movies until it
was closed as a movie theatre with the outbreak of the
first Intifada in 1987.
We would like to express our deep appreciation to the
following organizations and donors who have been so
gracious in their support and willingness to help.

How it all began
In 2005, Ismael’s 11 year old son Ahmed was shot down
by the Israeli army. Despite his grief, Ismael decides to
donate his son’s organs to Israeli children thus saving
their lives. A year later, still deeply affected by his son’s
death, he opens a culture centre for the children of the
camp as an alternative for their street life. Thanks to
foreign donations the centre starts providing many activities among which film courses are given. After a while
the children want to produce their first short film, only
to realize that they have no place to show it in. The only
cinema in town was closed more than twenty years ago.
The resurrection of Cinema Jenin has enormous dramatic potential and its story will be told in the form of a
documentary which follows a parallel process where the
children of the camp make a film about their lives. At the
same time they are taking part in reopening what would
become their future stage.

An advisory board consisting of local public characters as
well as Palestine and international filmmakers will be
responsible for the movie selection.
It is planned to have six daily showings. The audience can
vote after each showing on how much they enjoyed the
movie. The movies with the highest acceptance will be
repeated on the weekends.
In face of the symbolic character of the project we hope
to convince producers and film distributors to make high
quality movies available for us without charge respectively
on favourable conditions.
Our aim...
...is to encourage a culture of cinema-going for both the
population of Jenin and its refugee camp by showing a
mixture of unique, thrilling, entertaining and courageous
quality films. These include fiction films, documentaries,
comedies, children’s films, Arabic classics and contemporary movies. The official ticket price will be 5 NIS (1 Euro).
A website will be created to present the various activities
of the cinema. The project will be supported by residents
of Jenin and friends from across the world - from construction workers in Jenin to the German Foreign Minister
Frank-Walter Steinmeier and also Israelis and Israeli institutions, all longing for a renewed peace process.
We need your support
While preserving the original architecture, craftsmen
living in Jenin are supposed to renovate the cinema with
the help of young people from the refugee camp. In
order to ensure a long-lasting success of the project, the
youngsters will later be able to support the running of the
cinema’s business operation with the acquired skills.
We already received a digital film projection, a 35mm projector, 3D-Cinema, the light and sound system, a projection screen and further cinema technology from generous
German and international sponsors.
During the first few years the cinema’s business operations
will need to be subsidized with donations and public funds,
the medium term goal is for the cinema to support itself.
Right now we need your help!
