The majority of streetcars in the Twin City Rapid Transit Company, also known as Twin City Lines, were built between 1870 and 1930. During this time, each streetcar was a “two-man operation” -- a motorman to drive in front, and a conductor to take fares in the rear. By 1932, most of the system’s streetcars were converted to a “one-man operation,” with the motorman taking over both duties. Rybak, Mayor City of Minneapolis Christopher B. Coleman, Mayor City of Saint Paul Dear Friends, In less than a year, the Light Rail Transit Green Line will be carrying passengers along its 11.2-mile route to work, to ball games, and to independent shops and restaurants from Saint Paul to Minneapolis. Until then – and especially now that heavy construction for the Green Line is complete – know that all of the unique and special businesses along the Green Line eagerly await your business. In fact, now – before the Green Line officially opens – is when these businesses would welcome you the most! Up and down the Green Line, you’ll find businesses that have been owned by the same families for generations, as well as new ones owned by newcomers to our nation. Just think: you can go around the world in 11 miles in a microcosm of modern Minnesota! This directory is a listing of those businesses along the Green Line – from Lowertown and Downtown Saint Paul along University Avenue and through Stadium Village to the West Bank. Before you get your car’s oil changed somewhere else, check this directory first. Flip through it to find a great Thai restaurant for lunch, or when you need a haircut or a new suit. Along the Green Line, you should be able to find just about anything you might need. 1952 Trolley cars at 4th and Wabasha in downtown Saint Paul. At the peak of operations for the Twin City Lines, there were 524 miles of track, running from Stillwater in the east to Excelsior in the west. The lines helped shape the current layout of the Twin Cities by attracting businesses, especially where lines intersected, and influencing future infrastructure design. In 1920, annual ridership was at about 238 million. By 1954, ridership had dipped to 86 million, and streetcar service ended soon after. 4 Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society – Saint Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press We believe supporting Green Line businesses is the ultimate win/win – great products and services for you, and a needed boost for our local, hard-working business owners. Mayor R.T. Rybak Mayor Chris Coleman 1 GO GLOBAL. GO LOCAL. Rice is served with almost every meal. A variety of meats, fish, vegetables and noodle dishes are common. Dishes incorporate bold flavors, particularly the pungency and spiciness resulting from liberal use of garlic and chilli peppers, as well as the unique flavor of the Sichuan pepper. Peanuts, sesame paste, and ginger are also prominent ingredients in Szechuan cooking. Beef is somewhat more common in Szechuan cuisine than it is in other Chinese cuisines. Common Ingredients: Black Pepper, prahok, which adds a salty tang to many dishes, kroeung paste consisting of cardamom, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and turmeric, as well as lemongrass, galangal, garlic, shallots, cilantro, and kaffir lime leaves. Common Ingredients: In addition to a variety of meats, tofu, noodles and vegetables, the bold flavor is created with Sichuan pepper, garlic, chilli peppers, broad bean chili paste, ginger, star anise and other spicy herbs and spices. CHINESE CUISINE Along the Green Line visitors can find East African dishes traditionally made in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia. One will find spicy vegetable and meat dishes, usually in the form of wat (or wot), a thick stew, served atop injera, a large sourdough flatbread made out of fermented teff flour. Chinese restaurants are plenty and visitors can find some jewels scattered along the Green Line, but many call Little Mekong their home. Cantonese Cuisine EAST AFRICAN CUISINE Cantonese is a milder Chinese cuisine. Dishes incorporate a variety of meats, vegetables, tofu, rice and noodles. Spices are used in modest amounts to avoid overwhelming the flavors of the primary ingredients. Common Ingredients: Meat such as beef, chicken, fish and lamb. Legumes such as split peas or lentils or vegetables such as potato, carrots and chard. Additional flavors are added in a variety of combinations with onion, garlic, ginger, berbere, cardamom, tumeric, cumin and jalapeños. Fact: Ethiopians eat with their right hands, using pieces of injera to pick up bites of entrées and side dishes. Utensils are rarely used with Ethiopian cuisine. Tanpopo Restaurant – Hiyashi Chuka: Chilled noodles with marinated pork, carrots, tamago-yaki, cucumber, scallions and sesame sauce. JAPANESE CUISINE One of the less spicy of Asian cuisines, Japanese dishes are based on combining steamed white rice with one or several main dishes and side dishes. This may be accompanied by a clear or miso soup and some tsukemono (pickles). Common Ingredients: Besides pork, beef and chicken, Cantonese cuisine incorporates almost all edible meats, however, lamb and goat are rarely eaten. Additional flavors are added through sauces, such as oyster, plum and black bean sauces, as well as spring onion, sugar, salt, soy sauce, rice wine, cornstarch, vinegar and garlic. Ginger, chili peppers, five-spice powder, powdered black pepper, star anise and a few other spices are used sparingly. 12 Flamingo Restaurant – Sambusa: Pastry Shells stuffed with lentils or beef. Flamingo Restaurant – Timtimo/Miser: Red split lentils cooked in a spicy sauce that is a mixture of finely chopped onions, seasoned with fresh garlic, ginger, and berbere. Common Ingredients: Rice, noodles, seafood and a sparing use of meat. Japanese flavors come from a combination of dashi, soy sauce, sake and mirin, vinegar, sugar, and salt. Few herbs and spices are used as an accent and include ginger and red pepper. Some spices and herbs are added as garnish to the finished dish, such as minced ginger. Wasabi, Japanese mustard or grated daikon are sometimes provided as a condiment. Tanpopo Restaurant – Kimchi Nabe: Hot noodles with home-made kimchi, simmered beef, spinach, tofu and scallions. 13 KOREAN CUISINE Korean cuisine is based on rice, vegetables, and meats. Kimchi is served at every meal. Common Ingredients: Sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). Spices include red pepper, black pepper, Chinese pepper, cordifolia, mustard, chinensis, garlic, onion, ginger, leek, and scallion. MEXICAN CUISINE Dishes often include staples such as corn and beans. Corn is used to make masa, a dough for tamales, tortillas, gorditas. The use of chili peppers gives Mexican food its spicy kick. A variety of meats and beans are used in Mexican dishes and are often accompanied by rice. Common Ingredients: Herbs and spices in Mexican cuisine are chili powder, oregano, cilantro, epazote, cinnamon, and cocoa. Chipotle, a smoke-dried jalapeño chilli, is also common in Mexican cuisine. Many dishes also contain garlic and onions. Meats include beef, pork, chicken and fish. ON THE GREEN LINE Stadium Village, near the East Bank campus of the University of Minnesota, is located at the heart of an economically diverse and growing metropolitan area. The heart of the neighborhood is the intersection of Oak Street Southeast and Washington Avenue Southeast. The Stadium Village name comes from the area’s close association with the University of Minnesota. College football fans know the area as home to the old Memorial Stadium, which was torn down in 1992. Today the area is the home to TCF Bank Stadium, which opened in 2009. Other popular sports venues in the area include Williams Arena (basketball) and Mariucci Arena (hockey). Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society – Minneapolis Journal Did you know? Memorial Stadium, also known as the “Brick House,” was the home of the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 1924 until 1981. On November 15, 1924, in a game dedicating the new Memorial Stadium, the Gophers knocked Illinois star tailback Red Grange out of the game en route to a 20-7 upset victory. 24 Stadium Village – Minneapolis Meet Greg Rosvold, owner of Campus Pizza in Stadium Village. MPLS 1924 – Memorial Stadium under construction. CAMPUS PIZZA & PASTA Stadium Village is a bustling, robust community year-round. Its population ebbs and flows from a few thousand University of Minnesota students, employees and visitors on an average day to tens of thousands of people on days of major sporting events. A vibrant array of restaurants, bars and shops in Stadium Village, many of which have been around for decades, serve the needs of local residents and visitors. Because of the high visibility of the Stadium Village area as a sports locale, many in the community consider it to be the heart of the University of Minnesota campus. Located just a stone’s throw away from TCF Stadium, Campus Pizza is a staple on the University of Minnesota campus. Originally built in 1959, Campus Pizza prides itself in not taking any shortcuts when it comes to quality pizza. Every pizza is made with dough from scratch, sauce made in-house and freshly chopped produce. This tradition has kept Campus Pizza the local go-to place for sporting events, happy hour and even trivia and karaoke nights. A menu that appeals to families, students, work professionals and everyone in between keeps the restaurant open from 11 a.m.-1 a.m. every day of the week. Stop in and try Campus Pizza’s fresh food offerings because, according to Greg, “life’s too short to eat bad pizza.” FUN FACT: Campus Pizza uses 100% mozzarella cheese made in Burnett County, Wisconsin. 25 Av e 9 ^4 @9 Str eet %4 5 2 hA ve Delaware St %2 De %3 law are 1 St Essex St kw y Huron ys Ave 8 St. Mar rP !2 7 27th Ave ive Erie St Ontario St ER 6 t pi River !7 S ware Dela Erie St %7 Fulton St Mississip 4 !6 25t #0 $2 $6 !1 %9 %5 4th Ma rys Ave @3 #5 itw ay St. #9 Tra ns Ave !9 @0 $9 !0 3 6 Washington Ave Church St fM Ave t ut S Beacon St Village %0 Station ^5 ^2 $0 ^3 %1 Beacon St #2 #3 $5 $1 ^0 7 @7 $7 @6 @8 #7 !4 @2 #4 !3 5 8 !8 4 !5 @1 @5 East Bank #8 #6 ^1 #1 $3 $4 $8 %8 Station Delaware St %6 Pkwy 3 Uo Stadium Harvard St E River @4 r Washington Ave Delaware TCF Bank Stadium yD Union St Pleasant St St Av e 26t h bur Church St Plea Pill s rsi ty 2 23r d Dr Str eet t Oa kS ive sant St ry Un Oak St bu Str eet Wa ln Pill s 4th 18t h ON THE GREEN LINE Av e hA ve 17t MPLS 6th 9 !0 26 Stadium Village Stations GROCERY/LIQUOR !1 CVS Pharmacy 818 Washington Ave SE (612) 331-4240 cvs.com STADIUM VILLAGE – Minneapolis hA ve 16t STADIUM VILLAGE AUTOMOTIVE 1 Metro Petro & Car Wash 2700 University Ave SE (612) 331-6060 metropetrogas.com Str eet 27t h hA ve 1 5t 5th !2 Sabrina’s Grocery & Deli BANK 2812 University Ave SE Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union (612) 331-4799 2520 University Ave SE !3 Value Liquors (651) 312-9800 affinityplus.org 901 Washington Ave SE (612) 331-8006 TCF Bank 615 Washington Ave SE PROFESSIONAL SERVICES (612) 331-3639 !4 CorePower Yoga tcfbank.com 825 Washington Ave SE (612) 331-3861 US Bank corepoweryoga.com 718 Washington Ave SE (612) 378-7181 !5 FedEx/Kinko’s usbank.com 612 Washington Ave SE (612) 379-2452 HAIR SALONS/BARBERS/BEAUTY fedex.com Darque Tan !6 Little Dearborn Parts 919 Washington Ave SE 2424 University Ave SE (612) 331-8266 (612) 331-2066 darquetan.com littledearborn.com Great Clips !7 Max Computers 615 Washington Ave SE 2720 University Ave SE (612) 379-0430 (612) 379-2572 greatclips.com !8 Steady Tattoo & Body Piercing Shin’s Hair Salon/Karaoke 714 Washington Ave SE 211 Oak Street SE (612) 379-4455 (612) 331-1260 steadytattoo.com Sport Clips Inc 931 Washington Ave SE RESTAURANT/BAR (612) 379-4455 !9 Applebee’s sportclips.com 615 Washington Ave SE (612) 378-3740 HOTEL applebees.com Days Hotel on University 2407 University Ave SE @0 Beacon Public House 615 Washington Ave SE (612) 623-3999 (612) 362-6666 The Commons Hotel-Minneapolis commonshotel.com 615 Washington Ave SE (612) 379-8888 @1 Big 10 Restaurant commonshotel.com 606 Washington Ave SE (612) 378-0467 27 big10restaurant.com 28 @6 Burger King 925 Washington Ave SE (612) 379-7708 bk.com @7 Campus Pizza & Pasta 825 Washington Ave SE (612) 378-2417 campuspizza.com @8 Caribou Coffee 917 Washington Ave SE (612) 331-4121 cariboucoffee.com @9 Caspian Bistro 2418 University Ave SE (612) 623-1113 caspianbistro-mn.com #0 Chipotle Mexican Grill 800 Washington Ave SE (612) 378-1075 chipotle.com #1 Dairy Queen 716 Washington Ave SE (612) 378-1010 dairyqueen.com #2 D’Amico & Sons 200 Oak Street SE (612) 626-9659 damicoandsons.com #3 Dino’s Gyro’s 856 Washington Ave SE (612) 354-2005 dinosgyros.com RESTAURANT/BAR - MPLS ON THE GREEN LINE The Prospect Park area is immediately east of the University of Minnesota East Bank campus and health services complex. Specifically, Prospect Park is bounded by a major railroad yard to the north, Saint Paul to the east, the Mississippi River to the south and the Stadium Village area of the University of Minnesota to the west. The most prominent landmarks in Prospect Park are the Prospect Park Water Tower (with its prominent witch’s hat top) and Tower Hill Park. The area is home to a diverse array of uses: families reside in single-family homes near Tower Hill Park, university students live in apartments on the west side, and the northern section is a mix of light industry, rail yards and remnant grain silos. University Avenue in Prospect Park is also home to a wide mix of retail businesses and restaurants. Did you know? 1914-1915 – Prospect Park water tower, Minneapolis. Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society, Charles J. Hibbard – Photographer 30 The Prospect Park Water Tower is said to be the inspiration for the Bob Dylan song, “All Along the Watchtower.” Dylan would have routinely seen the Water Tower while living in the Dinkytown neighborhood of Minneapolis, adjacent to the University of Minnesota, in 1959. ART & ARCHITECTURE Prospect Park – Minneapolis Meet Jim Schmitt, owner of Art & Architecture in Prospect Park. Art & Architecture is an antique lover’s dream come true- thousands upon thousands of items just waiting to be discovered and put to use by a lucky new owner. Inventory is constantly changing and always inspiring for customers old and new. Although Jim might not be able to see the purpose with every item that comes through Art & Architecture’s doors, his “customers are some of the most creative people you’ll ever meet,” and he enjoys hearing about their visions for the store’s unique items. Nestled between the business district and residential area that makes up Prospect Park, the location was ideal for Jim when he was looking to move his established store, nine years ago. When you walk into the aged brick building, you instantly notice that it is the opposite of an antique mall; the historic neighborhood sets precedence for an adventurous experience. FUN FACT: After a trip to Art & Architecture be sure to wander through the building to discover other artistic Green Line businesses. 31 fM ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT 1 Textile Center 3000 University Ave SE (612) 436-0464 textilecentermn.org Tra ns itw ay PROSPECT PARK St Un Sid rsit y Malcolm Ave Av enu e ne yP Av e lm Ma Ave 5 AWASH Auto Repair 2929 University Ave SE A-3 (612) 378-1515 6 Chris Auto Body & Frame 2929 University Ave SE A-7 (612) 366-5805 8 Ave Seymour nce m lcol Ma St @0 e Clar h 4th !6 lco ve ur A @5 !0 2 @1 @3 Prospect Tr !8 Ave Bar Arthur Ave SE ive ou ym Se Ave ton ve rA Malcolm th ur Melbourne Ave @4 Orlin Ave 7 DIARH Auto Repair 2929 University Ave SE A-2 (612) 331-4000 !7 Emerald Street !9 Bedford Street rA ve 1 AUTOMOTIVE 4 Auto Techs 2929 University Ave SE A-9 (612) 290-5165 Bedford Ma St. Mar ON THE GREEN LINE th A ve 9 !4 4 !5 7 !1 @2 !3 3 6 !2 l Art MPLS 30 Ave itw ay Ar 27th Ave Tra ns 2 Youth Performance Company 3338 University Ave SE (612) 623-9080 youthperformanceco.org ATHLETICS/SPORT/FITNESS 3 Anytime Fitness 2929 University Avenue SE #W180 (612) 455-4100 anytimefitness.com 5 St. e Av ys Ave ms 27th Ave Prospect Park Station fM t S ware Dela t St rys St 27t hA ve law are 29th Ave Av e 4th De ex S Stadium Village SE illia W Ess Av e 27t h rsit y 26t h Ave ive Uo thu Un 4th Ar SE Raymond CEZ (Start of Westgate Station at SE 4th Street) 8 Four-Star Auto Service 3324 University Ave SE (612) 378-9561 fourstarauto.com 9 Gacal Auto Body 2929 University Ave SE A-1 (612) 702-8040 !0 Great Brakes Auto Repair 3326 University Ave SE (612) 331-3635 greatbrakesauto.com !1 M-Auto Service, Inc. 2929 University Ave SE A-5 (612) 227-5154 32 Prospect Park Station !2 SHINE Auto Body 2929 University Ave SE A-4 (651) 356-5600 PROSPECT PARK – Minneapolis Uo !3 Titan Alignment & Tire Repair 2929 University Ave SE A-10 (612) 455-6184 !4 United Auto Repair Services 2929 University Ave SE A-6 (612) 746-0478 !5 Van’s Automotive 2929 University Ave SE A-8 (612) 379-3468 BANK !6 Spire Federal Credit Union 3117 University Ave SE (651) 215-3500 !7 Wells Fargo Bank 3430 University Ave SE (612) 667-9378 HAIR SALONS/BARBERS/BEAUTY !8 Pete Lebak Barber Stylist 3404 University Ave SE (612) 378-2654 petelebak.com PROFESSIONAL SERVICES !9 General Nano Systems 3014 University Ave SE (612) 331-3690 @0 Tierney Business Imaging Services 3300 University Ave SE (612) 331-5500 tierneybrothers.com RESTAURANT/BAR @1 Cupcake 3338 University Ave SE (612) 378-4818 cup-cake.com @2 Overflow Cafe 2929 University Ave SE (612) 331-4632 overflowespressocafe.com 33 PROSPECT PARK – Minneapolis RETAIL @3 Art & Architecture 3338 University Ave SE (612) 904-1776 artandarc.com @4 Schneider Drug 3400 University Ave SE (612) 379-7232 @5 SuperAmerica 3357 University Ave SE (612) 379-7829 superamerica.com Top Left: The Birds at the Textile Center Top Right: Computer Repair at General Nano Right: Joshua Jore, Manager, General Nano Bottom Left: Products at General Nano Above: Dish Towels at Textile Center Bottom Left: The Smore Cupcake at Cupcake Top Left: Scarf at Textile Center Immediate Left: Kevin VanDeraa, Owner of Cupcake Below: Cupcake’s Pan Sign 34 35 RAYMOND CREATIVE ENTERPRISE ZONE Once known as the “West Midway” the Raymond Avenue area is enjoying a renaissance featuring live/work art spaces, sidewalk cafes and coffee shops. ON THE GREEN LINE Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society, A. F. Raymond – Photographer Did you know? From the post-Civil War years to the mid-20th Century, the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone was one of America’s largest industrial and commercial freight facility areas. By 1880, nine railroads came into Minneapolis or Saint Paul, each maintaining individual terminals and the area became a clearinghouse for most freight bound either west or east. 36 Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone – Saint Paul Meet Steve Garfield, owner of Noll Hardware in the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone. STP 1936 – Sign at the city limits of Saint Paul, University and Emerald Ave NOLL HARDWARE The Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone runs west to east from Emerald Street to Cleveland Avenue in Saint Paul, with State Highway 280 running north/south directly through the middle. Once commonly known as the West Midway of Saint Paul, the area was then the city’s largest industrial district. The Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone’s historic architecture reflects that heritage, with buildings developed to take advantage of the area’s proximity to rail and highway transportation. The “Creative Enterprise Zone” name reflects local interest in transforming the Raymond Avenue area from its heavy industrial heritage to a new era of livable, mixed-use neighborhoods. Already, many historic buildings have been converted to condominiums, apartments and live-work art spaces. Sidewalk cafes and coffee shops in the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone serve residents, local workers and visitors. The next era will reflect local interest in making the area a center of creativity and enterprise. Blue-collar and white-collar businesses will co-mingle in the Raymond Creative Enterprise Zone, reflecting a blend of the area’s cultural past and its new next stage, with a variety of light manufacturing, business start-ups, professional offices, and non-profit organizations. Originally opened in the late 1920s, Noll Hardware is everything you would expect of a traditional neighborhood hardware store. Carrying everything from plumbing and electrical items to cleaning supplies, tools and hardware, you can find just about anything at Noll’s. Maintaining the store’s commitment to quick and quality service to the neighborhood has kept the business going for two generations – a point of pride for the Garfields. The long-lasting history, loyal customers and appreciation for local business makes Noll Hardware a gem in the Raymond neighborhood. STP ON THE GREEN LINE February 1952 – Saint Paul city inspector inspecting streetcars at Snelling Station, near Snelling and University Avenue. Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society, Saint Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press Did you know? The southeast corner of Snelling and University Avenues, now home to the Midway Shopping Center, was once home to the main construction and repair shop for the Twin City Rapid Transit Company, the transportation company that originally operated Twin Cities streetcars and later buses until 1962. The Snelling Avenue Station & Shops expanded over the years and became a major garage for the bus system until it was shut down and demolished in 2001. 42 The Midway area of Saint Paul is bounded by Pierce Butler Route on the north, North Lexington Parkway on the east, University Avenue on the south and Cleveland Avenue on the west. The name comes from the fact that the area is almost literally midway between the downtowns of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The Midway is also home to the Twin Cities’ only Amtrak passenger rail terminal (slated to move to the Union Depot by the end of 2013), the city’s warehouse district, and a diverse mix of residential and commercial properties, including Midway Center, one of Saint Paul’s key shopping areas. A variety of retail stores, grocers and restaurants, operated by owners representing a variety of nationalities, provide a bustling mix of commerce and traffic on any day of the week. The key Midway intersection of University Avenue and Snelling Avenue is one of the busiest in all of the Twin Cities – a far cry from a century and a half ago, when the area was a giant prairie between Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The Midway area is a retail bonanza for shoppers, between its permanent retail stores on and around University Avenue, and the Minnesota State Fair, one of the nation’s most popular state fairs, attracting more than 1.7 million visitors during its annual two-week run before Labor Day. When the State Fair is not running, its property hosts year-round a variety of large-scale wholesale and retail sales, auctions and shows, typically attracting several thousand visitors for each event. RUSSIAN TEA HOUSE The Midway – Saint Paul Meet Nikolai and Linda Alenov, owners of Russian Tea House in The Midway. Located just two blocks east of Fairview Avenue, on Wheeler Street, Nik and Linda used to call the Russian Tea House ”home” before fully renovating it into a restaurant in 1978. Even though both levels of the building are now part of the restaurant, regular customers would easily tell you that because of the unique artwork, warm fireplace and the sweet smells coming from the kitchen, The Russian Tea House still feels like walking into your own home. The menu is loyal to the family’s Ukrainian and Russian heritage- you’ll find borscht, piroskhi, chocolate poppy seed rolls and Russian tea cakes, among the many options. When Russian Tea House first opened its doors on University Avenue, it was a new flavor to the neighborhood; now it is a treasured gem among dining options. FUN FACT: Add this word to your vocabulary: ‘’samovar,’’ which is the name of a Russian tea kettle. 43 THE MIDWAY STP Griggs St Dunlap St Lexington Pkwy Edmund Ave Syndicate St Hamline Ave Albert St Originally settled in the 1860s, the neighborhood gets its name from its first European settlers, GermanBohemians, who noted the number of frogs that lived in the swampy terrain and called the area “Froschenberg” or “frog city.” Families from Southeast Asia, Africa and Central and South America arrived in the late 20th century, creating one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the region. Wilder Foundation. 52 Historic Frogtown – Saint Paul Meet Damen Johnson and Dedrick Young, owners of Grooming House in Historic Frogtown. ST P 1917 – Eisenmenger Meat Market, 567 University Avenue, Saint Paul. GROOMING HOUSE University Avenue storefronts, home to dozens of small businesses, reflect the history of commerce along what was once one of the region’s busiest streetcar lines. Historic buildings where car dealerships, theaters, night clubs and industrial showrooms once thrived now offer restaurants, grocery stores, retail and service businesses from around the world. The rich variety of places to visit, things to do and food to eat make Historic Frogtown an ideal choice for visitors looking for a first-hand experience of Saint Paul’s many cultures. Located in the newly renovated Frogtown Square, on the corner of Dale Street and University Ave, these dynamic friends have created one of the most memorable spots along the Green Line. The unique barber shop is creatively decorated with fun pop art. The Grooming House’s professional stylists, all looking sharp dressed in black and accessorized to their own personal style, are sure to get you laughing and feeling comfortable in no time. That is exactly what childhood friends Damen and Dedrick wanted when they started Grooming House in 2005. Offering both men’s and women’s cuts, Grooming House has grown to be one of the biggest barber shops in St. Paul, with 8 full-time employees. Damen and Dedrick hired talented barbers based not only on their skills with the shears, but also on their abilities to get along with each other, creating a fun and lively experience for customers. ON THE GREEN LINE Rondo Avenue was the heart of Saint Paul’s most prominent African-American community dating back to the years just after the Civil War. By the 20th century, the neighborhood centered around Rondo Avenue was home to thousands of residents who had established businesses, opened schools, founded churches and built a tightly-knit community. The Rondo neighborhood nurtured men and women who went on to lead the nation in arts and athletics, civil rights and education, law and politics. NAACP Executive Director Roy Wilkins, world-renowned photographer Gordon Parks and Hall of Fame baseball great Dave Winfield all trace their roots to Rondo. HOMI MEXICAN RESTAURANT In the 1960s, Rondo Avenue along with much of the heart of the neighborhood was demolished as part of the construction of Interstate 94. Undaunted, the community has kept the spirit of Rondo alive. The annual Rondo Days celebration and the Selby Avenue Jazz Festival continue the neighborhood’s legacy of celebrating its artists and culture, as well as honoring the elders who have sustained the community while celebrating the young people who will carry it forward. A host of communitybased organizations are preserving and building upon the roots of a neighborhood whose rich legacy is an important piece of Saint Paul’s past, present, and future. Miguel and his wife, Hortencia, missed the flavors of their native Mexico after moving to St Paul, so with the help of their family, they were able to open an authentic Mexican restaurant in 2010, based on recipes from their childhoods. Walking into the restaurant, you are greeted by bright, warm colors and a smiling employee, ready to usher you to your seat. Lively Mexican music playing in the background sets the mood, while fresh chips and salsa are brought to your table. Using fresh produce and making each meal to order, you will be able to taste the true flavors of Mexico in each dish prepared at Homi. Be sure to save room for dessert- the delicious flan is a must! STP ca. 1900 – Rice Street and University Avenue, Saint Paul. BLUE LAGOON VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT The Rice Street area of Saint Paul, which begins just south of University Avenue and the State Capitol, at I-94, and continues north to Larpenteur Avenue, is one of the city’s most historic areas. Named for Henry Rice, a prominent Saint Paul real estate developer, and one of the state’s first U.S. senators, the Rice Street area has a distinctly working-class feel. Located north of downtown Saint Paul, the Rice Street area in the late 1800s quickly became known as the North End. The railroad tracks that cross Rice Street, north of Como Avenue, and the historic Robin Hood Flour grain elevator (built in 1918), west of the railroad tracks, indicate the area’s origins as a rail and milling district. Since the 1800s, commercial buildings began to line Rice Street to meet a myriad of business interests, and are still one of the area’s most prominent features, even today. The residents of the Rice Street area reflect the history and diversity of Saint Paul. In the 1800s, the area was originally settled by laborers, tradesmen and shopkeepers of British, Irish, German and Scandinavian heritage. Over time, Eastern and Southern Europeans also moved into the neighborhood. In the mid-1900s, a small population of African-Americans moved to the area. Most recently, Rice Street has become home to an increasingly significant number of Asian and Latino residents. Quynh and her family were born and raised in Vietnam, but have been in the United States for more than 10 years. When the Tran family found open retail space in 2011, close to the state capitol on Rice Street, they decided to open Blue Lagoon Restaurant, bringing delicious and authentic Vietnamese food to St. Paul. The Tran’s recipe books are filled with dishes from Hue, their hometown in central Vietnam. At Blue Lagoon, you can expect to try some familiar items (Pad Thai, Pho and Vietnamese curry) as well as some unique dishes like Bun Bo Hue, a spicy noodle dish. The Tran family creates a warm dining experience with traditional Vietnamese music in the background and excellent service. ON THE GREEN LINE The Lowertown Artist District is a 180-acre area that runs from Jackson to the Lafayette Bridge and from the river to 7th Street. Lowertown includes Mears Park, Saint Paul Union Depot, the Lower Landing, and the Saint Paul Farmer’s Market. Lowertown is also the oldest part of the whole city. The area’s name comes from the fact that it was originally the lower landing on the Mississippi River, providing the first port of access to the Twin Cities, from the river. From the 1800s to the 1920s, a variety of warehouse, railroad, banking and distribution centers served a bustling community of commerce in Lowertown. Over the next several decades, many of these buildings fell into disrepair or disuse, to the point that Lowertown became an undesirable destination. That began to change in the 1970s, when civic and private investment began to transform unoccupied warehouses, parking lots, and the non-operational Union Depot into use again. Today, the area features a variety of retail businesses, apartments, condominiums and entertainment destinations, many of which center around the arts – hence the term, “Artist District.” Did you know? Photo Credit: Minnesota Historical Society, Charles P. Gibson – Photographer 74 Lowertown Artist District – Saint Paul Meet Koshiki Smith, chef and owner of Tanpopo in Lowertown. ST P 1925-1926 – East Fourth Street between Sibley and Wacouta, Saint Paul. TANPOPO NOODLE SHOP Lowertown initially began at the end of Jackson Street, at a site on the river once known as the “Lower Landing” and in 1940 renamed “Lambert’s Landing.” Decades ago, commercial river vessels – from paddle-wheelers to tugs – would tie up at the landing to load and unload. At one time, the landing was so popular that steamboats would be lined up on the river. Today, all that remains of “Lambert’s Landing” is a plaque and a small spot along the river. Born and raised in Kyushu, Japan, Koshiki’s roots have led her to become a well-known Japanese chef in the Twin Cities since 2000. Using Koshiki’s childhood in Japan as inspiration and fresh, seasonal ingredients, Tanpopo offers a delicious menu of Japanese comfort food. Earning awards from Minnesota Monthly, City Pages and Foodservice News, it’s no wonder Koshiki has made a name for herself in the regional foodie world. Koshiki’s experience in the culinary world started after graduating from the University of Minnesota, when she worked at various Japanese restaurants in the Twin Cities. She decided to open her own restaurant in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill in 2000, and moved to Lowertown in 2003. In addition to running Tanpopo, Koshiki teaches Japanese cooking classes around the Twin Cities so that she can share her skill and love of cooking dishes from her native Japan. FUN FACT: Tanpopo is open evenings only, so be sure to stop in for dinner or a weeknight happy hour! 75 ARTIST DISTRICT ST P ON THE GREEN LINE To Rice Street Station RESTAURANT/BAR !0 Barrio Tequila Bar 235 6th Street E (651) 222-3250 www.barriotequila.com 2 Minnesota Ballet 249 4th Street E (651) 222-7919 summerdancecamp.com !1 Black Dog Coffee & Wine Bar 308 Prince Street #100 (651) 228-9274 www.blackdogstpaul.com !2 Christos Greek Restaurant Union Depot Place 214 4th Street E (651) 224-6000 christos.com !3 Faces-Mears Park 380 Jackson Street (651) 209-7776 facesmearspark.com !4 Golden’s Deli 275 4th Street E #102 (651) 224-8888 goldensdeli.us 3 Minnesota Museum of American Art Project Space 332 N.
