BBPA CONVENTION 2010
MESSAGE FROM THE BBPA PRESIDENT
O
n behalf of the Black Business and Professional Association
(BBPA) it gives me a sense of pride to launch the first
National Black Business and Professional Convention
(NBBPC). At the start of my tenure as President of the BBPA, the
thought of a convention evolved as I deliberated and contemplated
the exceptional work done by great pioneers in our community
and the needs still outstanding as it relates to the mandate of the
BBPA. Instantly, my steps were ordered and I knew this was a call
to action for our BBPA Strategic Planning Session that took place
in the upper chambers of the Scotiabank Plaza. With the assistance
of a terrific board of directors, the idea was motioned into action
and is now a reality. Today, we are very excited that as a result
of the strong financial support from our Title sponsor, Sterling
Dentistry, and Platinum sponsors, BMO, CIBC, TD, Royal Bank, and
Scotiabank, we are able to facilitate this historic event in Canada’s
top financial district, at the prestigious Sheraton Centre, Downtown
Toronto. The theme of this 2010 Business Expo is, “Stimulating
Dialogue – Breaking Barriers – Creating Opportunities”, which
will revolutionize the brand of the BBPA and propel its wheels for
greater traction as it relates to the true meaning of its mandate,
vision, and overall existence.
This convention brings together some of the boldest and
cutting-edge leaders today, including keynote speaker from New
York, Bruce George - motivational speaker, author and
entrepreneur; guest speakers John Tory - Former Leader of
the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, David Whittaker President & CEO of Tourism Toronto; the Hon. Margaret Best,
Julian Falconer (Falconer Charney LLP), Dr. David Burt; and the
Hon. Jean Augustine.
The Inaugural NBBPC is the meeting and birth place of great minds
as it relates to business, entrepreneurship, professional excellence,
economic empowerment, and higher education. We have
partnered with school boards, universities, businesses, charitable
organizations (including youth groups and social agencies), to
broaden the demographic of the business professional in Canada.
Through root-cause analysis and partnering with the decision
and policy makers, we hope to develop solution-based strategies
that will address the core of the “socio-economic endemic”
within our community.
The two-day convention will stimulate and inject an appetite for
economic excellence and sustainability amongst our constituencies.
The NBBPC has been raising eyebrows and has attracted Canada’s
brightest students, top employers who promote diversity,
entrepreneurs, visionaries, and government officials. The BBPA
aims to develop comprehensive strategies that ensure the
inclusion of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises into the
BBPA’s mainstream vision. We will also attempt to champion
the early infusion of a positive attitude, drive and passion toward
Entrepreneurship from an early age within the education cycle. This
would help change the economic DNA of our constituents and
poise our community and nation for greater economic mobility. A
measure that would help Canada address some of its longstanding
socio-economic issues that face predominantly new immigrants and
people within the diverse group. As the BBPA travels down this
new path of entrepreneurship
and economic empowerment,
we are humbled and awed by the
unswerving and immeasurable
support of our key sponsors
and donors, dedicated work
of the NBBPC Planning
Committee and volunteers. I
take this opportunity to express
my sincere thanks to the
backbone of our organization,
founders, past presidents, advisory council, board of directors,
and national scholarship board of trustees. To our title sponsor,
Sterling Dentistry, thanks for your generosity and consistency. To
our platinum sponsors, Canada’s five big banks, thanks for your
continuous support being the financial foundation of the BBPA. You
all understand the true meaning of corporate responsibility, and
have walked the walk in demonstrating corporate involvement in
the community as it pertains to community advocacy/advancement.
Thanks to City Hall and the Legislative Office of Ontario for
being so willing and open to facilitate our requirements leading
up to, and on the day of the Press Conference on October
19th. Thanks to our student table sponsors who understand the
big picture of our vision in helping to create a better future for our
community: Toronto District School Board, Toronto Adventist
District School Board, Liberal Caucus of Ontario, Dr. Alex
MacGregor, TIPT, Delores Lawrence, Nurses & Homemakers Inc,
John Tory, Paul Anthony, Dr. Gervan Fearon. Thanks to Caribbean
Camera, Pride, SWAY, CKLN.FM, Planet Africa, and all other media
that assisted in getting the NBBPC out to the public. Thanks to the
Sheraton Hotel for your outstanding hospitality in ensuring that our
event is a success.
To plan a first time event of this magnitude is truly not an easy feat,
therefore I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to my 2nd VP,
Mayvia Morrison for Chairing the NBBPC along with the Planning
Committee. A special thanks goes out to Adrianna Lewis and
Charla Maye Cooper for their outstanding jobs being the office
administrators, volunteering after their shifts, and working into
the early hours of the morning to ensure the project meets its
deadlines. Thanks to Cleve Sandy, the AV & Technical engineer for
ensuring that we are heard and viewed in the best light.
To our presenters, panelists, speakers, patrons, troop of
youth, teachers and chaperones, thanks for the commitment,
dedication and contribution to the big cause. Your efforts
will not go unnoticed! Tonight and tomorrow will find its way into
the history book of the BBPA, and hopefully carve a new path in the
socio-economic journey of our people. Thanks for helping the BBPA
draw the curtains and unveil the Inaugural National and Professional
Convention, a new path designed to enable the elimination of the
economic divide amongst racial lines. Thank You! Thank You! Thank
You! Let’s Do it Together, and be the Change We Seek!
BBPA CONVENTION 2010

MESSAGE FROM THE NBBPC CHAIR
I
t is a pleasure to welcome the participants,
presenters, sponsors and supporters
of the BBPA to our Inaugural National
Black Business and Professional Convention
(NBBPC 2010). As the chair of this National
Convention, I am pleased to see that our
convention has materialized. The concept
behind this convention was born out of an
identified need within the Black community
and seeks to promote diversity, encourage
economic empowerment, and build networks
across different businesses/ business sectors. I
believe the biggest challenge and opportunity
of our time is in Business and Professional
development.
The Black Business and Professional Association
(BBPA) was incorporated in July 1983 as a nonprofit charitable organization that serves to
address equity and opportunity for the Black
community in business, employment, education
and economic development. Over the years
we have produce programs such as the Harry
Jerome Awards, the National Scholarship
Fund and other events/programs that provide
networking opportunities for entrepreneurs
and professionals. However we did not have a
program that was totally geared towards the
area of Business and Professional development.
When the new board was selected in
September 2010 we developed a road map,
which was designed under our new leadership
as our recipe for success. The concept is based
on four pillars which were developed to ensure
we address the BBPA’s mandate and vision. Our
president lead us to realize that there was a
major need for our attention to be focussed on
the economic development of the Small Medium
Enterprise (SME), within our community.
Instantaneously, there was a common
understanding that something needed to be
done using collaborate efforts which has lead to
this historic event, the Inaugural National Black
Business and Professional Convention.
To the planning committee Kedon Newton,
Kay-Ann Williams, Taneisha Samuels, Ayokanmi
Falade, Charla-Maye Cooper and D’Juvayne
Christian, along with the other volunteers on
the subcommittees, thank you! Your dedication
to the success of this event is commendable.
Special thanks to our program manager
Adrianna Lewis and our event coordinator
Charla-Maye Cooper for your excellent work
and dedication.
Pauline Christian, thank you for your profound
leadership, guidance and support which has and
will continue to remind us that “Our deepest
fear is not that we are inadequate, but that
we are powerful beyond measure.” To my
fellow Board of Directors, thanks for your
support! To our sponsors, your generosity is
truly appreciated and we look forward to your
continued support.
It is truly an honour to be part of the Black
Business and Professional Convention that
promises to be an invaluable experience and is
expected to leave a lasting impact on those in
attendance as well as the wider community.
I implore you to enjoy the two days of this
convention and use the information you
receive to empower yourself on your journey
to reach your full potential. On behalf of the
Directors of the BBPA, we welcome you to
this revolutionary event under the banner of:
“Stimulating Dialogue – Breaking Barriers –
Creating Opportunities.”
The 1st National Black Business & Professional
Convention (NBBPC)
T
he National Black Business and Professional Convention (NBBPC) is an annual
convention and expo, and the first of its kind, focusing on the business and
professional community in Canada. The idea of the convention arose when
leaders of the BBPA re-evaluated the mandate and historical data of the organization at
their strategic planning session. They realized that there was a major need for attention
as it pertains to building the Small Medium Enterprise (SME), and there was a common
understanding that something needed to be done using collaborate efforts, leading to the
Inaugural National Black Business and Professional Convention.
The goal of the NBBPC is to promote diversity, encourage economic empowerment,
and build networks across different businesses/business sectors. The Convention will
reflect the BBPA’s strategy to draw on multi-disciplinary professionals, businesses and
organizations to cohesively stimulate and inject an appetite for economic excellence and
sustainability across the numerous and often intersecting business lines. The BBPA aims to
develop comprehensive strategies that ensure the inclusion of micro, small and mediumsized enterprises into the BBPA’s mainstream vision. The format of the convention
includes informative and empowering workshops, presentations, and round table
discussions, showcasing the best in business, entrepreneurship, education and finance.
The NBBPC is sponsored by Sterling Dentistry; Canada’s five biggest banks, BMO Financial
Group, Scotiabank, CIBC, TD Bank Financial Group, RBC Financial Group; Toronto
District School Board; and John Tory. It has received tremendous support from the
business, professional and financial community at large.
The NBBPC promises to be an invaluable experience and is expected to leave a lasting
impact on those in attendance as well as the wider community. It will attract Canada’s
brightest students, top employers, entrepreneurs, visionaries, and government officials,
focusing on organizations and institutions that promote diversity. Students, as well as
professionals, are especially encouraged to attend the convention. Students in particular
will be afforded recruitment and networking opportunities with some of Canada’s leading
corporations and institutions.

Our Success STORY
Jade Jager CLARKS
Excerpt from Jade Jager Clarks Testimonial/Success Story
In 2006 I opened my own business with just 18 clients in Brampton. Fast forward 4 years
and I now have over 200 clients, have expanded into my own larger facility and have build
a reputation that now attracts clients from all across the province to train in programs
which have gained recognition as one of the best in Ontario.
I am the Owner and Artistic Director of Jade’s Hip Hop Academy. It is a dance school
dedicated to training youth ages 3-18 and adults exclusively in urban dance which includes
popping, locking, break dance and krump. I opened The Academy at the age of 18 and I just
turned 22. All this success did not come without its hardships, countless hours of work
and many obstacles and challenges.
Now when people see me they can tell that I am young. Sometimes this works to my
advantage as they are intrigued and many times I have had people overlook me and not
take me seriously. I remember the feeling doubt, fear and insecurities that would follow
at first. I remember thinking that perhaps someone as young as me should not be trying.
However that did not stop me and those individuals that looked past my age and did give
me a chance were part of very successful ventures.
When I say I own a dance studio, a lot of people automatically conclude that all I do is
dance. They do not immediately see a business; they do not see that we have the same
administrative, financial, management, marketing, advertising, human resources and
corporate responsibility duties as does any other company. When I say I own a Hip Hop
Academy on top of that, it gets worse. Through commercialization in media the word “Hip
Hop” has gained negative connotation for most people. Almost immediately everyone
thinks that the type of dance I teach is the booty shaking and gyrating as seen in the rap
music videos. So the process of introducing myself at my age and then explaining what I do
is quiet interesting as it evokes many different reactions.
Despite all the obstacles and challenges as a young entrepreneur and as a young business
professional I have managed to achieve success. Besides our growing reputation and
success of our students, organizations such as the Ontario Arts Council and Dance
Ontario where I am also a member of the Board and the Director of their Youth Board,
now look to me for my knowledge and expertise in hip hop dance.
Now my fight is still not over and the bigger my business grows the more obstacles I
will face. There are still doors that will close before me, doors that will remain closed
and doors difficult to open like those in regards to funding for my students to travel and
compete internationally.
But my message to you young people is that your age should not stop you from pursuing
something you want to do. Just because someone your age may not have done it before
or because no one would expect you to succeed, should not deter you. You never know
until you try and as my mother always says a “no” you have, a “yes” you can get. My
message to you older more established people is to give more young people a chance.
Take more time to listen to their ideas and give them the opportunity to get something
started whether that be within your own company or their own venture. There is a lot of
talent out there, and a lot of unheard voices. So please take the time to listen and invest
into the next generation.

Our Success STORY
Ricky NECKLES
As an Entrepreneur, Public Speaker, and Community Servant, the name Ricky Neckles is
synonymous with excellence and leadership. His academic performance at the University
of Toronto earned him the role of Business Development Analyst during his twelve-month
internship at Nortel Networks. When Ricky graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Applied
Science in Mechanical Engineering, his business acumen and leadership qualities landed him
atop the recruitment lists of companies across Canada. Among them, was Accenture, a
global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company. Ricky would
become one of Accenture’s youngest recruits and the youngest to be appointed to the
position of Management Consultant Analyst where his portfolio included consulting Sears,
Loblaws, and various other multi-billion dollar corporations.
Despite his success at Accenture, Ricky decided to pursue his entrepreneurial passion
after one year with the company. In 2008, Ricky Founded Neckles Global Enterprise
Inc. (NGE), a privately held investment company which owns a collection of diversified
businesses operating in sectors that include real estate, trade and manufacturing. After
training with the Professional Real Estate Investors Group, and the Institute of Commercial
Real Estate, Ricky has developed an efficient, effective, and unique system of evaluation that
allows NGE to aggressively seize prime investment opportunities efficiently. By employing
a method of thorough market research data and analysis, Neckles Global Enterprise now
holds investment properties valued at over 3 million dollars under Ricky’s leadership
and direction.
Under the NGE umbrella, Ricky co-founded TNTech Canada Inc., which would soon
become Canada’s leading supplier and distributor of on-site paging services. Effectively
guided by Ricky, TNTech has helped maximize the efficiency and communication for
its clientele that includes: Jack Astor’s, The Keg Steakhouse, Baton Rouge and
Shoppers Drug Mart.
Aside from his business and entrepreneurial ventures, Ricky remains committed to
promoting academic excellence and community service. Ricky has also taken his message
of stewardship before government officials and corporate executives.
Ricky was raised in Toronto’s Mount Dennis community, a neighborhood recognized
by the local governments as “at risk.” This at risk environment has given Ricky a unique
perspective on the challenges facing youth in the at-risk communities across Canada. His
message of perseverance despite circumstance has resonated with youth who understand
the daily challenges they face.
Through partnerships with organizations like the National Society of Black Engineers
(NSBE), where he served two terms as President of the University of Toronto Chapter,
Ricky has inspired youth to strive for academic excellence, while providing them with the
tools to achieve success. During his tenure as president of the NSBE, membership tripled,
and financial support for the organization grew exponentially by over 500%. His most
notable accomplishment, however, is the launch of the Youth Legacy Program, an initiative
aimed at developing the academic and leadership skills of students in elementary and
secondary schools, as well as to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and
mathematics. Ricky’s vision has always been to ambitiously raise the standard of excellence
for our future leaders.
Having overcome the adversity of his environment, it is Ricky’s goal to create a lasting
legacy of achievement, excellence, and leadership in his community. Ricky believes, “It is
not where you start that counts, but where you finish.” Having experienced a measure of
success as an entrepreneur and community leader, Ricky continues to serve and lead his
community by emphasizing the importance of education and community service.

Small business
gets a big boost
Getting the right information and
advice can make all the difference
to new businesses.
These days, small business is big news.
In fact, research shows that over 900,000†
Canadians are thinking about starting
a business this year alone. What’s more,
over half of them have never owned
their own business before.
Of course, as anyone who has been
through the startup process can tell
you, it’s not enough just to have a
great idea; the key to business success
is how well you execute the many
details that can turn your vision into a
successful, fully functioning company
— everything from finding startup
financing to hiring the right people
(when the time is right).
The question is, where can entrepreneurs go to learn what those details are,
let alone how to execute them?
The website for business advice
One resource small business can turn to
is the website hosted by RBC Royal Bank®
at www.rbcroyalbank.com/tips.
“Although there are a number of
online
resources
available
for
Canadians who want to start up their
first business — or start over in a new
venture — the challenge is finding
the right information,” explains Mike
Michell, RBC Royal Bank’s National
Director, Small Business. “To make
it easier, we’re posting advice on key
aspects of starting up a business on
the website. It’s ready online access
to key information that can help
Canadian entrepreneurs successfully
begin their new enterprises.”
Everything in one place
The core of the website is a series of
Small Business Tips, which function
as “thought starters” to help aspiring
entrepreneurs form a more complete
picture of what it takes to start a
business.
Topics you’ll find covered on the site
range from “what it takes to be your own
boss” and“calculating your business startup costs” to “registering your business,”

“making sense of taxes” and much more.
From learning the fundamentals of
creating a business plan to determining
which business structure is right for
you, the advice you’re looking for is
just a mouse click away.
And, as new tips are added — and
people submit tips of their own — the
website is becoming an interactive
meeting place where entrepreneurs
can share and learn from others’ real
life experiences.
“At RBC® we have the tools, resources
and advice to help entrepreneurs start
and develop their own business,” says
Mr. Michell “Our goal is to make it easy
and convenient for people visiting the
site to learn what they need to know to
undertake their financial transactions
and grow their businesses.”

your business needs.

BBPA CONVENTION 2010
Centerplate wishes to congratulate the BBPA on its inaugural Convention in 2010.
We are honoured to partner with the BBPA going forward in a tandem effort to
positively impact the communities in which we have presence.
Centerplate is one of the largest hospitality companies in the world, with 250 North
American sports, entertainment and convention venues. We are the largest food
service provider for the NFL, a major provider to professional baseball, and we
partner with five of the top ten most active convention centers. No stranger to
marquee events, we’ve hosted countless landmark occasions, including 12 Super
Bowls, 19 World Series, 15 official U.S. Presidential Inaugural Balls, more than 100
major College Bowl Games and the largest plated dinner in history at the Alpha
Kappa Alpha Centennial Celebration.
With over 80 years in business, we trace our roots back to 1929 Chicago and the
founding of the Automatic Canteen Company of America by Nathaniel Leverone. At
our first premier national event, the 1933 World’s Fair, our company started our
journey to become a leading provider of food and merchandise services at stadiums,
arenas, amphitheaters, convention centers and theme parks throughout Canada and
the United States.
Centerplate is dedicated to integrating its services in ways that create exceptional
hospitality experiences while maintaining a strong commitment to the communities
in which we work and live. We strive to be a positive force in each of our
hometowns by playing an active role in providing fundraising opportunities to
non-profit organizations, food to shelters and job skills training for thousands of
people each year.
