Seven Habits of Highly Responsible Students
By: The Parent Institute
To the three “R”s taught in school, many parents and teachers would like to add a
fourth – Responsibility. They know that responsible students grow up to be
responsible adults. Responsible students don’t have any one secret for their success,
but they do practice some habits that help them.
1.
They set goals. Goals keep kids focused on the future. That’s why they
are the foundation of responsible behavior and success in school. Help
your child set goals. Ask your child:

How much improvement would you like to see on the week’s
test?

How would you like to improve your grades this grading
period?

What are two things you would like to accomplish this school
year?

What will be needed to meet those goals?
4.
The take notes in class. Students who earn all “A”s seem to have one
thing in common, they take notes in class. They have learned that
teachers will almost always spell out what they think is important (and
what’s likely to be on the test). Teach your child to take notes when
the teacher is talking. Spend time reviewing them before a test and
watch his grades go up.
5.
They have the tools they need. A carpenter wouldn’t think of
showing up without a hammer. A nurse always has a stethoscope. But
some students seem to think they can go to class without the pencils,
paper and other tools they need.
6.
They keep their commitments. Responsible people honor their
commitments to others and to themselves. They succeed in school by
doing their assignments well and on time. They do their share of the
group project. They go to soccer practice even when it’s cold. You can
teach your child about commitments by example. Talk with your child
about the commitments you have made to the family – to provide
meals, to keep clothes clean, to care for anyone who is sick. Ask your
child to make commitments of her own at home. And help her feel the
satisfaction that comes from meeting those commitments.
7.
They get ready ahead of time. Some student start out every morning
in a crisis. They can’t fine their homework. They don’t have time to
eat breakfast. The shirt they want to wear isn’t ironed. Responsible
students have learned that being last, or being early is not something
that simple happens to them. It is a choice they can make. Teach your
child to take five or 10 minutes before bedtime to get ready for the
next day. Have him pack the backpack. Make lunch. Lay out clothes.
He will soon see that those few minute will make the morning easier
and help him get to school ready to learn.
Goals help student focus on what’s important and what’s not. If they have a vision of
where they want to go, they’re more likely to get there. And students with goals find
it easier to say “no” to irresponsible behaviors because they are saying “yes” to their
vision of the future.
2.
They plan their time. Responsible people meet their obligations whether
it’s turning in a paper on the day it’s due or having a report on the boss’s
desk when it’s needed. But it takes planning. (Remember the old saying,
“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”) Help your child use a big calendar to
organize his time. Write down all his commitments and use the calendar
to plan time for homework each day. On a day when he has soccer after
school, he’ll need to study after dinner but the next day, when he has
choir practice in the evening, he’ll need to study right after school.
3.
They study every day. Learning any subject is like building a brick wall you
do it steadily, one step at a time. Responsible students set aside time for
homework or studying every day. On the days when your child’s teacher
assigns no homework, have her “assign herself.” That may be the day she
reviews vocabulary words. Or she may take a few minutes to review
notes.
Help Build Responsible Habits in 21 days. Experts say that if we repeat an action
every day for just 21 days, it is likely to become automatic. So, for the next 21
days, encourage your child to act on the habits of responsible students. She’ll
soon find she does them without even thinking. And she’ll be more responsible
and more successful in school as well

In Kindergarten, we are coming up on the 100th day of
school on February 8th. This is an exciting day for us
since we’ve been counting up to it from the very first
day. We will be having a 100’s Day Parade where
students will show off their 100’s day shirts that they
will make at home and then wear on the 100th day of
school. A letter will come home in your child’s folder as
the day gets closer to give you more information on
what will happen on this day.
We have had a busy nine weeks in first grade. We
learned about Thanksgiving and ended our study with a
Thanksgiving feast. The kids had a wonderful time!
During Christmas, we spent our time learning about
Christmas traditions around the world.
During Math, we learned everything from addition and
subtraction to the attributes of two dimensional and
three dimensional shapes.
During Science, we learned about states of matter and
types of energy.
We had an excellent nine weeks and look forward to
what the third nine weeks will bring us!
Second grade will combine reading, writing and social
studies as we start our famous person research project
this month. Our second graders will learn important
facts about famous people in United States History, and
record them in the form of written reports as well as
present them in our live wax museum. We can't wait to
tell our visitors what we have learned!
Science brings about a study of the earth's natural
resources, conservation and recycling. Then, we will
dive into a study of animals and their needs,
characteristics, and functions as well as the life cycle of
many insects.
Math will challenge us with fractional parts that make a
whole, place value to 1,200, and using fact families to
solve word problems with unknown numbers. Please
make sure to keep up with our Astros homework and
this will greatly help your child to retain this invaluable
teaching!
Language Arts:
We are working on our narrative and expository
compositions and “themes” in reading.

Math:
Keep studying those math facts!
We have had a great first half of the school year! One fun
highlight was going on a field trip to Austin Town where
we learned exciting new things about how the colonists
lived. We can’t wait to discover new and great things this
coming semester. In Science we will be learning about the
changing Earth and the life that lives on it. You will see us
busy learning about customary and metric units of
measurement in Math. In Language Arts we will be
exploring biographies and learning how to do interviews.
So don’t be surprised if you are caught being interviewed
by a 5th grader!
We are working on research projects, lots of new
concepts in math, reading many new stories and trying
to make our limit of 5 bluebonnet books so that we can
attend the luncheon. Read! Read! Read! And study
your math facts so that you are a Fact Frenzy master!!!
Read 20 – 30 minutes every night!!!

PE began a basketball unit after the holiday break. Students will learn a
variety of skills including dribbling, shooting, offense and defensive skills.
Mark your calendars…February 5th is the ALVIN ISD HEALTH FAIR. A flyer
with more information will be sent home closer to the date.
TIPS for Making Healthy Foods FUN for Children
Encourage children to eat vegetables and fruits by making it fun. Provide
healthy ingredients and let kids help with preparation, based on their age and
skills. Kids may try foods they avoided in the past if they helped make them.
smoothie creations
Blend fat-free or low-fat yogurt or milk with fruit pieces and crushed ice. Use
fresh, frozen, canned, and even overripe fruits. Try bananas, berries, peaches,
and/or pineapple. If you freeze the fruit first, you can even skip the ice!
delicious dippers
Kids love to dip their foods. Whip up a quick dip for veggies with yogurt and
seasonings such as herbs or garlic. Serve with raw vegetables like broccoli,
carrots, or cauliflower. Fruit chunks go great with a yogurt and cinnamon or
vanilla dip.
caterpillar kabobs
Assemble chunks of melon, apple, orange, and pear on skewers for a fruity
kabob. For a raw veggie version, use vegetables like zucchini, cucumber,
squash, sweet peppers, or tomatoes.
personalized pizzas
Set up a pizza-making station in the kitchen. Use
whole-wheat English muffins, bagels, or pita bread
as the crust. Have tomato sauce, low-fat cheese, and cut-up
vegetables or fruits for toppings. Let kids choose their own
favorites. Then pop the pizzas into the oven to warm.

Students Giving Back
ACE students were very generous and appreciative this
holiday season. They showed their generosity and
appreciation for the community, teachers and staff by
making homemade gifts. The students made Christmas
cards for residents at Winchester Lodge nursing home
here in Alvin. For Longfellow’s teachers and staff they
made salt dough ornaments. The kids had a blast making
these wonderful personalized gifts.

Welcome to Our Interns
We love our Longfellow Elementary Interns! Each Longfellow Leopard
needs to let them know how glad we are that they are here. Have fun
reading about each of these hard working teachers!
*Mrs. Westinghouse is Mrs. Bruner’s (2nd grade) intern. She was born
in Pasadena, TX and attends the University of Houston at Clear Lake.
She has two step children (ages 7 and 9) and one baby on the way! In
her spare time she likes to attend church and her most memorable
experience so far as an intern was attending our Open House. Mrs.
Westinghouse really enjoyed meeting all the parents of her wonderful
students!
*Ms. Jones is Mrs. Oliver’s (3rd grade) intern. She was born in
Lafayette, Louisiana and attends the University of Houston at Clear
Lake. She has a 9 year old daughter, Kenedi, who is in 4 th grade. Her
most memorable experience so far as an intern was being invited by Mrs.
Oliver to the 3rd grade Field Trip to Minute Maid Park. On the morning
of the trip, she showed up and her students were so excited that she
was coming along! That was a special day because of the fun everyone
shared while on the field trip.
*Mrs. Peterson is Mrs. Roosevelt’s (5th grade) intern. She was born in
Washington, Pennsylvania and attends the University of Houston at
Clear Lake. She has a son (Nathan, 13 yrs.) and a daughter (Haley, 9
yrs.). Three very interesting facts you might not know about Mrs.
Peterson is: before getting married her initials were ABC; she played
the clarinet in high school; and she worked at Chuck E. Cheese for 5
years! She also has 2 miniature schnauzers at home.
*Ms. Bell is Ms. Montoya’s (Kindergarten) intern. She was born in
Houston and attends the University of Houston at Clear Lake. Ms. Bell
has two younger sisters in high school and is the proud owner of two
dogs and one cat! Her pet peeve is Houston traffic and her most
memorable experience so far as an intern is working with and getting to
know Ms. Montoya’s kindergarteners. She thinks they are a GREAT
group of kids!
*Mrs. Alhamra is Ms. Chaffin’s (1st grade) intern. She was born in
Dickinson and attends the University of Houston at Clear Lake. Mrs.
Alhamra enjoys eating Middle Eastern foods and her favorite movie is
“The Blind Side”. She is very proud of her family; husband, Waleed, two
sons, Michael and Firas, and one daughter, Lena. Her dream vacation
would be to travel to Greece and her pet peeve is a messy room. Be sure
and ask her about her adorable Maltese dog she has at home!

CIS students have been discussing mentoring this
month since President Obama declared that
January is “National Mentoring Month.” We all
know how powerful it is have a mentor; it is
equally as powerful to be a mentor. As we think of
the people who have influenced our lives, we can
ensure we are impacting others also. It is
important to take a moment to show appreciation
for those who have helped us grow as
individuals. At the same time we can kindly “pay
it forward.” With January being “National
Mentoring Month,” it is important for all to
understand that being a mentor can dramatically
change a person’s life. Teachers, students, staff,
and family members can all be mentors and help
others succeed. Please see
http://www.nationalmentoringmonth.org for
more information on this subject.
