SERMON FOR ALL SAINTS
If you want to go to heaven, you’ll need a lot of help. That’s how I understand Jesus when He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit”. I am poor
in spirit because I know I do not have what it takes to get to heaven on my own. If I do any good in this life, it is for two reasons: God gave
me the grace to do it and the positive spiritual power of many people praying for me. Before marrying a couple I ask them, “Is your future
spouse the one who will help you get to heaven?” That help will come as you will learn the virtue of patience on a daily basis. Quoting John
from Revelation, “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress.” Spiritual poverty means I know I need constant help from
God and others to get to heaven. All the other seven beatitudes flow from this first one.
The Feast of All Saints is a time to celebrate those who have made it. But the real work comes the next day on the Feast of All Souls. That
is when we should pray that all souls, souls in Purgatory and souls who have not yet crossed over, will get to heaven. The best way to get
a soul out of Purgatory is to do the following: 1) Offer the grace of a Mass for a soul within 8 days of All Souls Day; 2) Visit a graveyard and
pray the Prayer for the Holy Souls listed below; 3) Go to confession during this eight day period; 4) Sprinkle holy water on a specific grave
of someone you wish to remember, while saying the Holy Souls Prayer.
Last week, I went to Bobby Macke’s Bar in Wilder Kentucky. Bob Mackey is a famous country singer who still performs there on the
weekends. This bar is no ordinary place. It is one of the most haunted spots in the country. Many years ago it was owned by the mob who
murdered many a hapless victim in their basement cell if they stole from a casino table. Many show girls disappeared mysteriously from that
basement. The paranormal group welcomed me with great curiosity because they claimed I was the first Catholic Priest to ever visit the bar
for a paranormal investigation.
The activity started immediately as soon as I entered the long bar. I was irresistibly drawn to the corner of the musty-smelling next room
where there was a pool table. I actually walked through the room right to the corner in the dark. Though fearful of a dark room, I was not
afraid. The light above the pool table suddenly turned on as I got near it. I figured it was probably turned on by a motion sensor. I heard from
a distance one of the investigators gasp and say, “First time I ever saw that!” I said, “I guess I activated the motion sensor.” She replied, “That
light is on a wall switch and your five feet away from it.”
The spirits stayed active through the entire session conducted in the basement, where torture and murders were common. We communicated
through a flashlight that responded intelligently to our questions. I told whoever was there, “I am a Catholic Priest. I come in peace and
respect. I mean you no harm. I am here to pray for you that one day you will go to heaven. Please turn the light on if that is Ok?” Within
seconds the light burned bright. Through this means, I discovered I was talking to a young show girl murdered in the very room of our
session. The investigator placed a blue soccer ball in the middle of the room. I asked her to move it. It moved 6 inches to the right, then later
moved a few inches to the left. She told us she had done it.
I felt a profound peace during this session. I was never afraid. I felt called to pray for her and ask God to bring her soul to peace with Him.
Maybe as a sign she appreciated this, I smelt the hint of sweet perfume like a show girl might wear.
I believe there are many souls who are lost or who now reside in Purgatory. They need you. You can earn grace and apply it to their soul.
You never know if the grace of just one more prayer, one more Mass, one more confession might be the tipping point of their entrance to
the Light of Heaven, the beatific vision of seeing God face to face. These souls will not forget you. They’ll help you when your time comes.
PRAYER TO OUR SUFFERING SAVIOR FOR THE HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY
O most sweet Jesus, through the bloody sweat which Thou didst suffer in the Garden of Gethsemane,
have mercy on these Blessed Souls. Have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel scourging, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in Thy most painful crowning with thorns, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in carrying Thy cross to Calvary, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer during Thy most cruel Crucifixion, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the pains which Thou didst suffer in Thy most bitter agony on the Cross, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
O most sweet Jesus, through the immense pain which Thou didst suffer in breathing forth Thy Blessed Soul, have mercy on them.
R. Have mercy on them, O Lord.
(Recommend yourself to the Souls in Purgatory and mention your intentions here)
Blessed Souls, I have prayed for thee; I entreat thee, who are so dear to God, and who are secure of never losing Him, to pray for me a
miserable sinner, who is in danger of being damned, and of losing God forever. Amen.
