Report to the Academy of the Sacred Heart Community
Over the course of the last three fiscal years (July 1, 2011-June 30, 2014), I had the distinctive honor of serving as Head of
School with Dale Watchowski as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. During these years, Dale and I, along with the Senior
Management Team and the Board of Trustees, traveled some of the most challenging years in the history of the Academy of
the Sacred Heart. At the same time, we experienced the fidelity of God’s grace and the Sacred Heart family that continues to
provide a life-directing education for children from generation to generation.
During these years of challenge, the singular commitment of each member of the community has led to the collective result
that places us in a new direction -- one where fiscal discipline guides the heart of faith and allows the intellect to be shaped
as leaders of conscience are formed for the future. We are most grateful to each one of you for your commitment, your
tenacity, your trust and the daily focus that combined to write this chapter of new hope.
These years also marked the development and implementation of the Strategic Plan that directed our pathway toward fiscal
sustainability, the successful refinancing of the outstanding debt, the successful Board-initiated charitable giving efforts,
and the implementation of new academic programs to meet the needs of both the mission and the exemplary students who
continue to be attracted to the Academy.
With this letter, you will find the Donor Reports that match these years of our strategic plan. Having secured new leadership
in the Advancement and Finance Offices as well as the installation of new software programs, this public reporting in the
future will match the fiscal year for the Academy. This publication, however, offers a singular snapshot into those members
of the Academy of the Sacred Heart family who have been instrumental in the solidification of both the present and the
future. Those who have been active in the community over these years know that we have worked with diligence, faith,
persistence and under the direction of a very wise and talented to Board of Trustees to create a future of new hope and fiscal
health due in a large part to the tireless effort of those whose names fill these pages.
A glance through these pages will reveal individuals of character and a community that believe in the difference a Sacred
Heart education makes in the life of a child. We leave you with the image that has characterized these years: when you get
into a car, you need to glance in the rearview mirror to see what is behind you, but if you keep your focus on what is behind
you, there is no future -- you will crash. But, if you glance behind and then put your full focus out the front windshield to
what is ahead, you discover the road that leads to the future. Recognizing where we have been informs us but does not drive us forward. It is the future and the hope we have for the
difference the Academy of the Sacred Heart will make in the future of the world that is our road into the future. With great
confidence rooted in faith, we offer this snapshot out the rearview mirror, honoring the commitment of those who have
insured our future. For generations of Sacred Heart graduates will look back and see you as those whose investment has
created their future.
Please count on the prayer of the Religious of the Sacred Heart and the Children of the Sacred Heart for the difference you
have made in both our past and our future.

The Sophie Society has been established in honor of the proud legacy of the Academy of the Sacred
Heart and the timeless vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat. This Society is comprised of lead benefactors
who, through their generosity, demonstrate a commitment to the ideals and mission of the Academy of
the Sacred Heart. Membership in this Society is open to all who make a gift of $1,000 or more to Annual
Giving.

In 1972, the Wansboro Award was
initiated to honor individuals in the
Sacred Heart family who by their
lives and activities have demonstrated
confidence in the Heart of Jesus. The
recipient of the award need not be a
Sacred Heart alumna, as Sister Wansboro
was not, but must share with Sister
Wansboro that strong commitment and
dedication to the Heart of Jesus and
The Board of Trustees holds the mission
of the Society of the Sacred Heart in
trust as it serves the current generation
of Children of the Sacred Heart while

The Academy’s annual and ongoing expenses are largely met by tuition, Annual Giving and the proceeds of the
Benefit, but the school’s future depends on our endowments and named funds. An endowment is a permanent
fund from which a portion is spent to meet annual needs. Designated for use by the Board of Trustees, these gifts
ensure the longevity of the Academy of the Sacred Heart.

Endowment

The fund generates a single scholarship awarded to

“Heart to Heart” was established to
provide dollars for a Sacred Heart
education for the children of alumnae

2013 Wansboro Award
In 1972, the Wansboro Award was initiated to honor
individuals in the Sacred Heart family who by their lives
and activities have demonstrated Confidence in the Heart
of Jesus. The recipient of the award need not be a Sacred
Heart alumna, as indeed Sister Wansboro was not, but
the recipient must share with Sister Wansboro that strong
commitment and dedication to the Heart of Jesus and
Dacia Van Antwerp’48
The 2013 Wansboro Award Recipient is Dacia Van
Antwerp’48. Dacia is a valued member of our Sacred Heart
family and is an active alumna who works tirelessly in
supporting our community. Dacia exemplifies confidence
and trust in the heart of Jesus, as shown by Katherine
Wansboro, RSCJ, and is very deserving of this honor.
To lead a life, day in and day out, that is committed and
dedicated to the Heart of Jesus is no small feat. To do so
with a passion for serving others and an intrinsic joy in
being the spiritual caretaker of the souls around oneself
is awe inspiring. Dacia Van Antwerp is inspirational in
the way she lives her life, in how she upholds the Goals
& Criteria and how she connects with people of all ages,
cultures and beliefs.
Dacia is a natural student and loves to apply what she
learns. She is also a talented facilitator, using this ability
frequently in her leadership roles on many corporate and
charitable boards. Dacia was the first alumna appointed to
the Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart Board of
Trustees. Her latest book, “Amazing Sophie”, was illustrated
by one of the Academy’s own students, with the proceeds
donated to the Academy of the Sacred Heart Bloomfield
Hills.
We honor Dacia today for her lifelong and ever-present
faith, service, and commitment. In doing so, we thank her
for the countless ways she has improved so many of our
lives.

2014 Wansboro Award
In 1972, the Wansboro Award was initiated to honor
individuals in the Sacred Heart family who by their lives
and activities have demonstrated Confidence in the Heart
of Jesus. The recipient of the award need not be a Sacred
Heart alumna, as indeed Sister Wansboro was not, but
the recipient must share with Sister Wansboro that strong
commitment and dedication to the Heart of Jesus and

Barbara Brown Lopiccolo, a Sacred Heart “lifer,” is a 1962 graduate
of the Academy of the Sacred Heart, and for the past 29 years, she
has served the Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Bloomfield campus
and has been the Admissions Director since 1988. In addition to
being the welcoming recruiter for the Academy of the Sacred Heart,
Barbara has been an involved, active alumna in our local, national,
and international Network of Sacred Heart Schools.
Barbara was a two-term President of the Alumnae Board of
Bloomfield Hills, MI from 1991 to 1995, and she has continued a
leadership role on the Advisory Board. Barbara served as President
of the Associated Alumnae and Alumni of the Sacred Heart
(AASH), an organization of over 50,000 alumnae and alumni of
Sacred Heart Schools in the United States and Canada. In 2006,
Barbara was elected to the Board of Directors of the worldwide
association of alumnae and alumni of the Sacred Heart. The
Network of Sacred Heart Schools includes 21 schools in the United
States and is affiliated with institutions in 44 countries around
the world. In 2007, Barbara received the Cor Unum Award for
the Central Region, which is given for “excellence in one’s life
work, loyalty to Sacred Heart values, and the gift of self in service
to others.” In 2010 Barbara was named Vice President of the
Worldwide Association of Alumnae and Alumni of the Sacred
Heart (AMASC).
Barbara has always shown by example what it means to live the
Goals and Criteria of the Sacred Heart. In the summer of 2012,
Barbara took part in the Mission Immersion Program and spent
two and a half weeks in Uganda. Barbara reported that, “Working
with the Ugandi students strengthened the bonds that unite us as
members of our growing Sacred Heart family.”

Early Childhood Program (boys and

From the very beginning, our
youngest students learn to love and
love to learn. We believe in a valuesbased education that prepares our
students for professional success,
but never at the expense of personal
growth.
Lower School (boys and girls,
Grades 2-4) Fostering imagination,
passion, empathy, and creativity is
crucial in the elementary grades. By
fourth grade, a Sacred Heart student
has been an inventor, a scientist, an
athlete, a president, and a friend.
Middle School for Girls (Grades
5-8) & Kensington Hall (boys,
Grades 5-8) Our single-gender
middle schools foster growth and
high achievement for boys in the
humanities and girls in science,
technology, engineering, and math.
Upper School (girls, Grades 9-12)
In 2014, our Upper School girls were
awarded $3.5 million in scholarships
after posting ACT scores five points
above the national average.
