Peace Table in Managua (Nicaragua) October 15, 2015. On October 15, 2015 a Peace Table took place at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Managua (Nicaragua). This event was performed in order to celebrate the 10 anniversary of the historic nomination of 1000 women from more than 150 countries to the Peace Nobel Prize. In addition, The Peace Table was an important opportunity to highlight the role of women in peace-building process. Peace Women Violeta Delgado Sarmiento and Vilma Núñez de Escorcia and Regional Coordinator, María Julia Moreyra, organized the aforementioned Peace Table. PW Violeta Delgado Sarmiento was in charge of the opening of the event First of all, a tribute to Nicaraguan PW Esperanza Cruz Rodríguez who passed away some years ago was paid. Her daughter, Marta Cabrera, remembered the outstanding background of her mother. After this touching moment, Regional Coordinator María Julia Moreyra talked about PeaceWomen Across the Globe (PWAG), the concept of Peace, the Jubilee and she explained in detail the most important contents of UNSCR 1325 “Women, Peace and Security” and the relevance that countries could implement the aforementioned Resolution at national level. Only Chile and Argentina in Latin America have their National Plans. Regional Coordinator, María Julia Moreyra Women who participated of the event talked about the current situation in Nicaragua. They announced and they denounced. PW Hazel María Law Blanco explained in detail the situation that Mizquita Community is facing. Women announced: - The agreement with the concept of peace developed by PWAG Peace is not possible if human rights are not respected Young people need to become organizers and they should find creative alternatives The need to access to justice Peace means that women have access to education, health and work The need to loose fear in order to defend their rights The need to promote a forum in order to know the situation in Guaspán (Pacific) The importance to build peace and to defend human rights Peace has female face. Women build peace. To update the foundations of peace The need to raise awareness before each painful fact that takes place in Nicaragua The importance to support people who build peace To look for peace and unity To pay attention to the things that happen at townships The importance to be and remain together in each fight To talk about the importance of building peace To develop new ideas, new masculinities The importance to go on fighting The importance to mobilize peacefully To prevent any further return to war Women denounced: - - The law that gives super powers to the police and the army in Nicaragua Conflicts that face rural women Mizquita community: problems with colonos. Children could not go to school, there are displaced people who are hungry. They have health problems too. Natural resources were destroyed (indigenous people took care of them). There are kidnappings. Some people were injured by shooting. Lack of answers related to serious problems Women do not have access to education, health, work People have lost their mental peace. People in Nicaragua have to face poverty, violence, persecution Women could not organize demonstrations without being bothered Nicaragua is a country where life is very difficult since there is no peace Women cannot enjoy their fundamental rights Policemen hit women and children The importance to denounce repressions The importance to denounce domestic violence The President of Nicaragua do not build schools, he builds barracks Violence against women and children in Puerto Borazague. Police is absent. Girls are raped. There is not an office where women could make complaints Peace is not possible if people cannot access to justice Women from Las Segovias need food, bread and work Complaint against Daniel Ortega, the President of Nicaragua, since he is one of the killers of hope The importance to be strong in order to denounce that the President of the country rapes women It is not possible to discuss certain topics at universities PWAG in an important TV Program María Julia Moreyra, Regional Coordinator, PWAG, was invited to the TV program “Esta Noche” in charge of Carlos Fernando Chamorro where they talked about PWAG and the importance of the Peace Table in Nicaragua.
