Clarendon Avenue School 915 Clarendon Avenue, Mukwonago, Wisconsin 53149 NEWSLETTER February, 2016 Phone Number: FAX: Office Hours: 262-363-6286 262-363-6289 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Clarendon Web: District Web: www.masd.k12.wi.us/ces www.masd.k12.wi.us FROM THE PRINCIPAL rd Wednesday, Feb. 3 Parent/Teacher Conferences 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. PTG Meeting 7:00 p.m. Library Dear Parents/Guardians: At the end of February, my wife Jill and I are expecting our fourth child. We are very excited for this added blessing to our family, but it will obviously have some important implications for the Clarendon family as well. I will be taking several weeks of family leave in order to support my family and I wanted to take this opportunity to communicate the school's plans for my absence. Monday, Feb. 22nd No School – Teacher Professional Development Day First, my leave is tentatively scheduled to begin February 24 and end March 28. I have worked closely with our Superintendent, Shawn McNulty, and our Director of Employee and Instructional Services, Nick Reichhoff, to ensure that we have a plan for Clarendon to run as smoothly as possible during that time. Thursday, Feb. 25th Favorite Man Breakfast As it turns out, the solution is one familiar to many of you. Mr. Kevin Wright, one of our fifth grade teachers, will be assuming some of the roles as acting principal while I am out. Mr. Wright will teach his regular classes during the mornings of my leave. During the afternoons, a long-term substitute teacher will teach his fifth grade students while Mr. Wright carries out the duties of acting principal. Monday, Feb. 29th-March 3rd Parent Lunch Week Wednesday, March 2nd One Book One School Parent Night/Art Show Friday, March 4th No School Mr. Wright holds an administrative license and has a great understanding of how Clarendon operates and many of the families who we are proud to serve. In particular, Mr. Wright will be the point of contact for parent concerns, student behavior issues, and other day-to-day building activities. Other district elementary principals will be available to support Mr. Wright if necessary. Our wonderful office staff -- Mrs. Berg, Mrs. Ayers, and Mrs. Brode -- will continue to manage the other day-to-day pieces with which you work most closely. Fortunately, we are blessed with an outstanding staff at Clarendon who will ensure that the day-to-day running of the school continues at a high level of excellence. I am confident that our team will do a great job while I am out. Please contact our main office with any questions you have. Thank you for your continued support of student learning! Building Principal SCHOOL HOURS Our school hours are from 8:30 a.m. until 3:35 p.m. The first bell in the morning rings at 8:20 a.m. Students should not arrive until 8:20 a.m. and if they do, they need to wait in the lobby area until the bell rings. This area is unsupervised. Students need to be on their best behavior in this area. Please remind your child of this if you drop them off early. There should be no running or loud voices in the lobby. If need be, day care is available in the cafeteria starting at 7:00 a.m. until 8:20 a.m. and again at the end of the day from 3:35 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact the office. 4 YEAR OLD KINDERGARTEN If you have a child who will be four years old by September 1, or you know a family with a three-year-old, please check out the school district website for information regarding the 4K program. Main District Website: http://www.masd.k12.wi.us/ 4K Information Webpage: http://www.masd.k12.wi.us/learning/masd-4kinformation.cfm 2016-2017 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION INFORMATION KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION for district residents will be held January 18, 2016, through March 18, 2016, at the Mukwonago Area School District Office. The district office is open from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily and is located at 385 County Road NN East in Mukwonago between Clarendon Avenue Elementary and Park View Middle Schools. Children who will be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2016, should register for the 2016-2017 school year. Children are not required to attend this registration. Please note that students who are enrolled in the MASD 4K program do NOT need to re-register for five year old kindergarten. More information about the transition from 4K to 5K will be sent out in the next few months. Registration materials need to be completed prior to bringing them to the district office. The registration materials can be obtained at http://www.masd.k12.wi.us/parents-students/masd-forms.cfm#enrollreg See attached Press Release for additional information regarding Kindergarten registration. EARLY ENTRANCE The Mukwonago School District is accepting applications for early entrance to 5 Year old Kindergarten through March 1, 2016. Early Entrance eligibility evaluations will be conducted for children who are not 5 years old by September 1st only if the child will be 5 years of age by October 1, 2016. To be eligible for early admission to kindergarten the child must be age 5 by October 1, 2016 and meet criteria set by the District in the areas of social-emotional, academic and intellectual levels. More information can be found on the district website, www.MASD.k12.wi.us, in Board Policy JBCCB. To apply, parents must send a letter of request stating the child's name, date of birth, parent name, address and phone number to Mukwonago Area School District, Pupil Services Department, Attn: Laura Stroika, 385 County Road NN East, Mukwonago, WI 53149. OPEN ENROLLMENT LAW The State of Wisconsin has a public school open enrollment law that allows non-resident students to apply for either full-time or part-time enrollment in district schools. This means that students who live outside of the Mukwonago Area School District may apply to attend Mukwonago schools, and students who live in the Mukwonago district may apply to enroll in other districts. Districts will set criteria for acceptance based on space available, disciplinary records, educational needs, and requests of resident students to attend other schools within the district. Part-time enrollment is limited to high school students who may take up to two courses at a high school. Criteria for granting part-time requests will include the cost to the home district. Transportation for either full-time or part-time enrollment is the responsibility of the parent. Open Enrollment applications will be accepted February 1- April 30, 2016. Open Enrollment forms are available on the Wisconsin D.P.I. website: http://sms.dpi.wi.gov/sms_psctoc 2 INTRA-DISTRICT STUDENT TRANSFER REQUESTS Requests for a student to attend a school outside of the home attendance area will follow the following criteria. Written transfer requests for the next school year are to be filed between January 1 and May 1. Forms are available at each elementary school. The request is to be presented to the principal of the student’s home school. The sending principal will share the information with the requested receiving principal. Parents will be informed of the decision by June 1. Alternate plans should be made for the upcoming school year should the request be denied. Transportation to attend a school outside of the home area is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. Student enrollment in the receiving school involved is the primary consideration in granting a transfer request. If the request(s) would require the hiring of an additional teacher or an instructional aide the request will be denied. Siblings will be given preference in transfer requests. Siblings of students transferred due to program needs, ex. EEN, have first preference. Approved transfers are for the duration of the elementary grades unless enrollments cause overcrowding resulting in the need to hire an additional teacher or redistricting occurs. If there are more requests than seats, students will be selected on a lottery basis. REFERENDUM UPDATE The MASD School Board recently approved two resolutions to improve Mukwonago High School for an April 5, 2016 referendum. Detailed information explaining the need for facility improvements, our planning process, and the proposed comprehensive solution will be mailed to all district residents by the end of January. Immediate information can be found on our district website: http://www.masd.k12.wi.us/district/masdreferendum.cfm. Several informational sessions will be held throughout the district in the next nine weeks, including 10:00 AM and 6:30 PM Open Houses at Mukwonago High School on February 29, March 8 and March 15. Presentations and tours will also be be conducted during the MHS Course Information Night on February 3rd at 5:30 and 7:30 PM.
