Philips C-Arm and Hologic
InSight Mini C-Arm are mobile
units that provides doctors with
high-resolution imaging of nonenhanced soft tissue and bony
structures. The ability to obtain
these images during surgery is
clearly an advantage.
The Mini C-Arm, specialized
for smaller surgeries such as
hand, foot or ankle, answers the
needs of orthopedic surgeons for
precision and versatility in extremity surgery. InSight combines tremendous maneuverabil-
ity, ultra-fine fluoroscopy images, and automated adjustments
that deliver the optimum image
every time, for every patient. The
advanced degree of automation
incorporated into the Mini CArm means surgeons can stay focused on procedures, rather than
instrumentation and adjustments.
In addition, Stacy Davis, Director of Radiology, has announced the installation of a
Toshiba Medical Systems
Aquilion Scanner, pictured
above, to be completed in March
or April this year.
Vision is a seasonal publication made possible by Excelsior Springs
Medical Center and Excelsior Springs Health Care Foundation with
composition and photography by Morgansites.com.
ESMC is a community hospital composed of 25 critical access hospital beds, 60-bed convalescent center, 20-bed residential care center and a 34-bed independent living facility.

ESHC Foundation seeks funds for van
Lucille, a 90-year old retired actress and resident of the Lillian
McDavid Independent Living Center, loves to attend plays and movies. Her love of the theatre is contagious and she encourages the
other residents to go with her.
Joe, an 85-year old resident of
the Residential Care Facility, is an
avid history buff. He and other residents would love to take a trip to
the World War I museum in Kansas City.
Unfortunately, the only mode of
transportation is a 1995 van with
over 100,000 miles that provides
transportation to residents. The size
of the van limits the number of residents that are able to take place in
various outings ... some can go, but
others must stay behind.
The Excelsior Springs Health
Care Foundation is spearheading an
Annual Appeal for your help to
make it possible for residents to
expand their activities. The
Foundation’s goal is to raise
$50,000 to supplement the van account.
“We are close to meeting this
goal,” said W. Kent Powell, DDS,
ESHC Foundation President. “We
currently have $30,101 in our account, due to generous donations.”
To make a donation, contact
Jeanne Buckman at 816-629-2768.
Your investment will make a difference in our community.

Residents enjoy new exercise room and computer lab
Garnet Haifleigh, resident of the
Lillian McDavid Independent Living Center, has four daughters living in Missouri, Kansas and
Omaha. She has a granddaughter in
California and a grandson in Ohio,
plus relatives in Michigan and Nebraska. The new computer lab located in The Lillian helps her stay
in touch with all of them.
“It’s really neat,” said Judi
Andrews. “Being able to send email
allows her to keep in touch -- like
all of us now keep in touch.”
Judi is a volunteer of The Lillian,
coming to ESMC on Thursdays to
provide instruction on basic computer skills. Residents learn how to
turn the computer on, maneuver the
mouse, access the Internet, send
email and how to print information.
Residents enjoy “Activity Connection”, an online resource that
Judi maintains a membership with

A friend had to bring in her
mother to the ER at ESMC last
night after a fall. The ER was very
full, no beds available, hectic. My
friend said she had never seen a
more efficient, compassionate ER
team! Although her mother had to
wait in a wheel chair in the hall for
a bit, nurses came out frequently
with warm blankets and to check
on her. The family had never used
the facility before, but now sing
your praises! -- Barbara Ross
to provide games, newsletters, current news, calendars and more.
The new computer lab is
equipped with three computers, a
color printer and a telephone. The
adjacent exercise room was fur-
nished with donations from Hospital staff members. Both are open 8
a.m. to 4 p.m., and residents are issued a key so they can spend as
much time as they want utilizing the
facilities.
Auxiliary benefits ESMC
The Excelsior Springs
Medical Center Auxiliary
grossed $49,885 in 2007
to help fund Hospital services and equipment.
New flat-screen TVs
and light-filtering room
blinds were made available in patient rooms
through the Auxiliary’s
efforts, pictured at right.
Improvements to patient
rooms and other parts of the Hospital are underway as part of the
renovation that is taking place during the addition of the Outpatient
and Wellness Clinic.
The Auxiliary brings vendors to
ESMC that offer books, food items,

of $500 or more during the
fourth quarter of 2007:
In memory of Jack D. Thomas to benefit van account.
In memory of Tom Berg.
Thank you so much for everything you did to help us in our recent loss. Your kindness and helpfulness was so appreciated. The
past few years that Jim and Helen
have lived in the Independent Living Center has been some of the
best. Helen loved all the activities
and having so many friends to care
about and have fun with. Jim
hasn’t been so stable in his health
in years. They both thrived in that
environment. Now that we are
bringing Jim to Florida, we realize
what a great place you have there.
We can’t find another like it here.
We also enjoyed the guest rooms
at the Center. It was so nice, comfortable and convenient to really
get a good visit with Jim and
Helen. From your kind ear to listen during our pain to offers of
laundry soap, boxes and making
a special guest room, we thank
you! -- Lila & Jim Lowrey
As most of you probably know,
I had knee surgery on September
13th and I was lucky enough to be
in a room with new blinds and a
flat screen TV (donated by the
Auxiliary). Thank you for all your
hard work. The TV and blinds are
wonderful! Thank you once again
for your hard work, you are very
much appreciated! -- Judy

ESMC enters into Phase II of expansion
ESMC participates in National Wear Red Day
Construction workers are making progress on the almost $9 million Outpatient and Wellness Clinic
addition to Excelsior Springs Medical Center.
According to Project Administrator Bob Cecil, residents will notice a lot more activity as ESMC
enters into Phase II of construction.
Phase I is complete and provides
for new patient parking and a vestibule entry that will be used during construction of the two-story
addition.
When the project is completed,
ESMC will have a new two-story
building which includes an additional 28,000 sq. ft. of space. The
expansion will provide space for
more specialists in the Outpatient
Clinics and house Rehabilitation
ESMC joined with thousands
of women, companies and organizations and cities across
America on National Wear Red
Day, Friday, February 1, 2008.
“By wearing red and making a
donation, the employees of
ESMC support ongoing research
and education about women and
heart disease,” said Sally Nance,
Services, Wellness Clinic, Pharmacy, Human Resources, administrative and medical staff offices, and
a Community Outreach meeting area.
The Hospital will also have a
renovated lab, admitting and business office and an expanded gift
shop. These services will be moved
temporarily into the new wing when
it is completed so that the existing
space can be renovated. This will
occur in late summer.
The expansion provides for anticipated growth of the community
and will also alleviate the need for
many patients to travel outside of
the Excelsior Springs area for specialized services. ESMC has a service area of about 40,000 people.
The addition will be completed this
winter.

Carol Blum, MD, and Bruce Lerner, MD, join medical staff
Excelsior Springs Medical Center is proud to announce that Carol
A. Blum, MD, joined the medical
staff in January. Dr. Blum is board
certified, practicing anesthesiology.
“I’m excited to be back,” said
Dr. Blum, who worked for ESMC
for 12 years and has served as staff
advisor. “The first week I was back
I saw three patients that I already
knew.”
Five years ago, she began work
at Independence Regional Medical
Center. “When Independence Regional closed, I saw it as an opportunity to return because I always
enjoyed working at a smaller hospital,” said Dr. Blum.
That sentiment is shared by her
partner, Bruce Lerner, MD, who is
also board certified, practicing anesthesiology, and a former staff
member of Independence Regional
Carol Blum, MD
Bruce Lerner, MD
Medical Center. “It’s very nice
working here,” said Dr. Lerner. “It’s
like one big family. It’s a nice
change.”
Dr. Blum has been practicing anesthesiology for 26 years. Dr.
Lerner has been practicing anesthesiology for 30 years. Together they
serve the needs of patients of the
surgical department and of the
emergency room.
“We are available 24/7,” said Dr.
Blum.
Dr. Blum and Dr. Lerner both
graduated from the University of
KS School of Medicine.
Hospice receives deficiency-free
status in recent survey
Hospice Services has received a
deficiency-free status from a survey
conducted January 7, 8 and 9, according to Tiffany Cook, RN, BSN,
Director.
Hospice is a Medicare certified,
not-for-profit agency and is a service of ESMC.The survey was conducted by Missouri’s Department of
Health & Senior Services, Bureau
of Home Care & Rehabilitative
Standards.
Hospice is a special kind of care
designed to provide sensitivity and
support for people in the final phase
of a terminal illness. Hospice care
seeks to enable patients to carry on
an alert, pain-controlled life and to
manage other symptoms so their
last days may be spent with dignity
at home or a home-like setting.
“This status is very, very difficult to obtain,” said Cook. “I am
very pleased with our staff.”
Hospice joins other ESMC services in this achievement. Other
departments receiving deficiencyfree surveys include Home Health
Services and the ESMC Convalescent Center.
Hospice currently has a staff of
17 and seven volunteers serving
Clay, Ray, Clinton and Caldwell
counties. For more information

ESMC receives ACR accreditation
Excelsior Springs Medical
Center has been awarded a threeyear term of accreditation in
Mammography-Film Screen as
the result of a recent survey by
the American College of Radiology.
The ACR, headquartered in
Reston, Va., awards accreditation
to facilities for the achievement
of high practice standards after a
peer-review evaluation of the
practice. Board-certified physicians and medical physicists who
are experts in the field conduct
evaluations. They assess the
qualifications of the personnel
and the adequacy of facility
equipment. The surveyors report
their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which
subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.
The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000
diagnostic-interventional radiologist, radiation oncologists, and
nuclear medicine and medical
physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and
the delivery of comprehensive
health care services.
To schedule your mammogram screening, please call Excelsior Springs Medical Center’s
fully accredited mammography
department at 816-629-2788.

Vision honored for excellence
Excelsior Springs Medical Center has received statewide recognition of the Vision newsletter, a publication produced to educate and inform community and area residents
about it’s services.
The Show-Me Excellence
Awards, presented annually by the
Missouri Association for Healthcare Public Relations and Marketing (MAHPRM), recognize high
achievement and superb quality in
advertising, marketing and public
relations projects produced by hospitals and health care systems
throughout the state.
The awards were presented at
the Missouri Hospital Association’s
85th Annual Convention & Trade
Show in November. A statewide
panel of public relations and marketing professionals judged the 275
entries in this year’s competition.
“We’re honored that the work of
Excelsior Springs Medical Center
has been selected to receive this
statewide recognition,” said Sally
Nance, Hospital CEO. “However,
a lot of the credit goes to Jeanne
Buckman, our Foundation Director,
for coordinating the newsletter and
to Kevin and Sonya Morgan of
morgansites!com, for their commitment to our Hospital and to our
community.”
The awards competition was established by MAHPRM in 1981
and is the only Missouri competition dedicated to hospital and health
care public relations and communications efforts. With 21 categories, the competition included
projects in media relations, advertising, publications, writing, photography, marketing and public relations.

Excelsior Springs Medical Center and School District partner in disaster drill
On November 8, 2007, at 8:30 a.m., an apartment building exploded after natural gas
migrated into the building from a damaged pipeline. At 9:05 a.m., it was revealed that
100 people were injured, three residents of the building had been killed; fifty-four residents were injured. Forty-three were disbursed to other area hospitals and eleven were
transported to ESMC.
That was the scenario presented to ESMC Inpatient Team Manager Karen Ronne,
RN, by the Kansas City Regional Homeland Security Coordinating Committee.
"ESMC is presented with disaster drill scenarios two times a year," stated Ronne.
"However, this time we were able to partner with Excelsior Springs Career Center nursing, media, and drama students to make it more realistic. Tom Mayfield, Coordinator of
Safety and Security for the ES School District, was instrumental in organizing students
to become the patient and the press."
The next disaster drill will be held in Spring 2008. "With every disaster drill we try to
add new issues into the mix so that we will be as prepared as we can be," stated Ronne.
"We look forward to working with the students in the ES School District again. They
were great patients and we appreciated their enthusiasm."
