HEALTHCARE INTRODUCTION The purpose of this booklet is to introduce you to Pearce Bottomley Architects’ healthcare portfolio, not just in terms of our services and examples of built projects but also what inspires the Practice. As an RIBA Chartered Practice, formed in 1958 with a history traceable to 1888, we deliver projects using a range of procurement methods across the RIBA work stages including traditional, design and build contracts and partnering agreements. At the heart of all our work are people: medical staff and their patients school children and staff, congregations, the people who live in the homes we build, those who have no home at all. In order for this wide range of people to benefit from the design process, we believe that it is crucial to involve them in the design process. By promoting a close working relationship with our clients and the end-users throughout the design, delivery and post-completion stages the architecture, in whatever form it takes, becomes relevant, meaningful and long term. Architectural Design Our core service is based on the RIBA Plan of Work from inception to completion on a wide range of building types, on projects large and small and on both new build and existing buildings. We undertake site inspections, condition surveys and detailed analysis of existing buildings to determine repairs and maintenance strategies for many types of property. CDM Coordination The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 require certain types of building projects to be notified to the Health and Safety Executive and necessitate the need for a CDM Coordinator to be appointed. Our team are Corporate Members of the Association for Project Safety thereby enabling us to fulfil the role of CDM Coordinator. Project Management We can act as the single point of supervision for a building project, overseeing the construction, management, coordination, fit out and furnishing of a scheme. We have Members of the Association of Project Managers within the Practice. Public Consultation and Engagement We can act as independent facilitators bringing stakeholders together to explore ways in which a community or facility can develop. We have worked successfully with a range of stakeholders from inner cities through to rural communities, housing estates, schools and community centres, high streets and health facilities. By using a range of proven tools and methodologies – as well as considerable enthusiasm – we help make the connection between the design and the people for whom we are designing. Design Review and Advisory Services Design review is an independent and impartial evaluation process that offers feedback and observations of schemes but does not seek to redesign them. Members of our team sit on the Regional Design Review Panel supporting decision makers across the Yorkshire region in their pursuit of high quality buildings and spaces. We also offer an advisory service to a range of clients (including community groups, local authorities and commercial clients) acting as an independent reviewer where a design team is already in place. Whether you are a doctor, healthcare provider or developer, we will work with you to develop your assets, providing ‘healing spaces’ that feel good to be in and increase service efficiency through innovative design. We understand that healthcare buildings work better when they act as a focus to the local community and, through the careful use of materials, colour and landscaping, create a sense of personalised care rather than an institutional service. Knowledge and experience Over the past 50 years of delivering healthcare schemes, we have adapted to the many changes in the NHS. We are fully conversant with relevant legislation including infection control requirements, HTMs and Firecode. In the last 10 years we have specialised in Primary Care Facilities via Doctor Led, Third Party Developers, PFI and LIFT routes and are part of the Hull NHS Framework. We have extensive experience of delivering a wide range of medical and hospital departments including nonmedical support services, various projects for acute and elderly mental health patients and a number of care-inthe community projects including conversion and newbuild works to provide shared units with central support facilities. Left: Project: Client: Value: Contractor: Brig Royd surgery, Rippondon Apollo Capital Projects £2.2million Southdale Ltd WORKING DIRECT WITH GPS SHERBURN GROUP PRACTICE CLIENT: Sherburn Medical Practice VALUE: £500,000 CONTRACTOR: Allerton Construction We have a long history of working directly with GPs to develop their own Practices. Sometimes this involves extending a purpose-built surgery, other times it is about re-configuring a building that was never intended to be a surgery, quite often starting out as a house, adapting to a whole new use over a number of years. Whatever the circumstances, we will work closely with GPs, nursing staff, other healthcare professionals and administrative staff to develop a surgery that meets the needs of 21st century community healthcare and the specific requirements of the individual Practice. We have worked continously with the Sherburn medical Practice for over 40 years, converting the original surgery building from a house to a medical centre in the 1970s. More recently, the Practice added an additional building to the surgey by refurbishing and converting an existing Grade II Listed former school building in the centre of Sherburn in Elmet. This building is adjacent to the existing surgery and provides expanded and enhanced services such as physiotherapy, chiropody, speech and language therapy, psychology and counselling, as well as some visiting consultant services such as psychiatry. Other works carried out for the Practice include fabric repairs and refurbishment work. ADDINGHAM MEDICAL CENTRE CLIENT: Dr Suleman VALUE: £1.4 million CONTRACTOR: Caddick Construction Located at on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, this medical centre in Addingham provides GP services to both the village and the surrounding towns and villages including Ilkley and Silsden. Due to its senstive location, the surgery utilises traditional stone and slate construction to fit seamlessly into the historic village, but with the addition of some contemporary details such as the lead-lined corner window to the waiting room. Orientation was key in the design, with the waiting room facing the hills. All public areas were located on the ground floor, with staff areas on the first floor. The 800 sq m new build scheme also included a pharmacy, with scope for the surgery to expand at a later date. Third Party DEVELOPMENTS GIRLINGTON HEALTH CENTRE, BRADFORD CLIENT: Apollo Capital Projects VALUE: £1.4million CONTRACTOR: Bermar Building Co. Ltd We have been working with third party developers (3PD) in the primary healthcare sector for over 15 years. We form a key and pro-active part of the team, working in partnership with GP practices, PCTs and NHS bodies to design and deliver a range of healthcare projects. The Wolds Centre, Market Weighton (Assara Group) A new £2.4million development provides state of the art facility for the Market Weighton Surgery. Accommodation includes a pharmacy, community services and a minor surgery suite. Due to complete October 2014 and achieves BREEAM Excellent. Spire Hospital, Anlaby, East Yorkshire A new 2 storey facility for Spire Healthcare to provide physiotherapy, wellness and community surgery accommodation for patients together with comprehensive facilities for staff. Due to start on site end of 2014. Girlington Health Centre is located in the heart of Bradford, surrounded on each side by the traditional terraced housing so typical of the area. The brief was established through close consultation with the Practice Manager, the doctors, nursing staff and visiting healthcare professionals. We also worked with patient groups and carried out a series of public consultations and Q&A sessions. This was especially important so that we could fully understand the wider needs of the community, and, particular, very specific cultural needs. The success of this engagement programme resulted in a building that is widely used by the local community as a general meeting point and cultural centre as opposed to being just a health centre. The principle feature of the health centre is the bright double height waiting area which forms the heart of the scheme. Careful specification and use of colour creates a friendly and modern interior, whilst the building is designed in such a way that it achieves BREEAM Healthcare ‘excellent’ standard BRIG ROYD SURGERY, RIPPONDEN CLIENT: Apollo Capital Projects VALUE: £2.2million CONTRACTOR: Southdale Ltd Brig Royd Surgery is a new two storey Primary Care Centre and GP practice on the edge of the village of Ripponden. It is adjacent to Ripponden Conservation Area and is on the periphery of Rishworth Moor, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The building is designed to reflect the village and landscape in which it is situated, with the massing kept low and heavy, reflecting the local character. The form of the building looks to Ripponden’s history for its inspiration, with its distinctive plan reflecting the mill races that are common in the area. The 1200 sq m building is organised around a central top light atrium space with public accessible spaces, including a pharmacy, located on the ground floor and the staff accommodation to the first. A key feature of the waiting room is the glass mobile by a local artist which takes inspiration from the River Ryburn and the specific medicinal qualities of plants and flowers. An air source heat pumps top provides over 10% of the building’s energy. FARROW MEDICAL CENTRE CLIENT: Apollo Capital Projects VALUE: £1.4million CONTRACTOR: Bermar Building Company Ltd Farrow Medical Centre replaced a smaller GP surgery and provides nine consulting rooms, a dedicated counselling room, minor surgery suite and a large multi-purpose room suitable for a variety of clinical and non-clinical uses. Although the new medical centre remains on the high street, it utilises a redundant site opposite the old surgery. The new location has enabled the building to have much greater accessibility with new road and path improvements as well a car park to the rear. The new location has also meant that a pharmacy could be accommodated on the site as well. The medical centre is in the process of achieving BREEAM ‘Very Good’ with photovoltaic roof mounted panels, partial under floor heating and light sensors. Should the Practice wish to expand in the future, the building can extend at first floor level. Dr Wendy Leedham (GP Partner) - “a high quality, well designed building which we feel sure will enable us to provide quality primary care services for our patients and the local community.” PFI and LIFT SCHEMES THE FRIARY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL, RICHMOND, NORTH YORKSHIRE CLIENT: Primary Medical Property VALUE: £2million CONTRACTOR: Robert R Roberts We have worked on a range of PFI and LIFT schemes across the region including the first healthcare project to be completed as a pure government-approved Private Finance Initiative. Both PFI and LIFT schemes involve, in the most part, the combination of services in a larger building, and therefore many of the design challenges centre on appropriate use of shared space. This is crucial to enable staff and patients to access all the different services that they may need to visit as part of an extended consultation. We have developed the skills, experience and understanding to bring the different departments and facilities together, whilst ensuring that these ‘in between’ spaces remain an important part of the brief. These spaces are, afterall, vital to the smooth running of the building. Awards The Cudworth Centre, Cudworth - National LIFT Awards 2008 for Best Regeneration Project White Wings Centre, Askern - National LIFT Awards 2010 for Best User Experience The Friary Community Hospital is one of the first PFI projects of its type in the UK and comprises the refurbishment and extension to a Grade II listed former boarding school with a history dating back to the 1600s. However, the building had been derelict for some years before becoming a community hospital and GP surgery. The project therefore became a threefold design challenge - how to restore a historic building, how to sympathetically convert a listed building to an entirely different use, and how to ensure that the scheme meets the expectations of a 21st century medical profession. The reinvigorated building is designed to aid the healthcare professionals at the hospital in their objective to provide a multi-disciplinary approach by providing a 18 bed ward, facilities for eight separate GP Practices, therapy rooms for dietetics, speech therapy, chiropody, physiotherapy and occupational therapy as well as facilities for a number of clinics including surgical, orthopaedic, medicine, rheumatology, paediatrics, mental health, family planning and audiology. The Friary also has its own Chapel of rest. CUDWORTH HEALTH CENTRE CLIENT: Barnsley Community Solutions VALUE: £5.5million CONTRACTOR: Bluestone This scheme is one of two buildings in Tranche 1b of the Barnsley NHS LIFT Development Programme and comprises the construction of a new three storey building on an existing brownfield site close to Cudworth Town Centre. It won two awards in the national LIFT awards: for ‘Best Community Project’ and for ‘Best Regeneration Scheme’’. The centre was developed to coordinate healthcare provision in Cudworth and brought together four GP Practices, a pharmacy, Local Authority facilities and PCT facilities including physiotherapy, audiology, day care surgery, dentistry and podiatry in the same building. This significantly improved primary care in Cudworth by providing enhanced therapy and clinical facilities in a quality environment. The building is arranged into zones with public accessible spaces on ground and first floors and largely staff spaces on the second floor. A main building reception adjacent to the main entrance directs visitors to sub reception and waiting areas within the building. NON MEDICAL CARE An important aspect of delivering sustainable healthcare is the need to provide for non-medical care. These types of projects may include care homes and support units for both the elderly and young people. They also include care facilities for the homeless and the less advantaged. Consultation and user engagement are crucial to the success of this particular type of project, a sense of ownership and pride enables their long standing place in the immediate and wider community. We have designed and delivered multi-award winning nonmedical care schemes such as St George’s Crypt in Leeds city centre and the Hospital of God at Greatham, near Hartlepool. Awards St Georges’ Crypt, Leeds - RICS Pro-Yorkshire Awards 2012 for Community Benefit (Highly Commended), Leeds Architecture Awards 2011for Best Altered Building’ and Best Landscape, EASA Presidents’ Awards 2011 (Runnerup) Hospital of God, Greatham - Almshouses Association 2009 for HRH Prince of Wales Patrons Award Left: Right: St George’s Crypt, Leeds St George’s Crypt, Leeds ST GEORGE’S CRYPT, LEEDS CLIENT: St. George’s Crypt VALUE: £1million CONTRACTOR: Baum Management This multi-award winning facility for the homeless comprises an extension and extensive refurbishment of St George’s Crypt, an annex to the Grade II listed St George’s Church in the centre of Leeds. As well as the sensitive design approach to an important heritage building, the scheme was an exploration of how architecture can influence the way an organisation is run and the impact it has on users. The facility has been an enormous success, with the charity noting that the openness of the design and quality of finish has been instrumental in improving the selfesteem and trust of the clients. Graffiti and vandalism have significantly reduced and, for the first time, clients were able to be given some privacy. St George’s Crypt have been able to extend their services to the homeless of Leeds by offering health checks, training and support. HOSPITAL OF GOD, GREATHAM, HARTLEPOOL CLIENT: Hospital of God VALUE: £2.9million CONTRACTOR: Gus Robinson Developments This award winning scheme is a 35 bed residential care home in the historic village of Greatham, including refurbishment of existing Grade II listed accommodation. To reduce the impact on the surrounding landscape the building was designed to resemble a series of traditional smaller houses stepping down the hillside. In order to foster a sense of community within the complex, rooms were collected into smaller groups of 6 or 7, with communal seating areas overlooking the surrounding farmland. An important aspect of this community is the day centre which forms a principle part of the hospital providing a cafe and activity areas for both residents and the local population. For residents, each of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities and user-controlled environmental features and, where possible, patio doors opening out onto the central courtyard. Those on the upper floors had French balconies to connect to the courtyard or additional windows providing selected views over the landscape. In particular, each bedroom has broadband in order to meet the needs of a new generation of residents.
