Practical information 3 4 Why Santiago de Compostela? 5 6 Because it is the final destination of the Way of St. James S antiago de Compostela is the final destination of one of Europe’s most important pilgrim routes, the Way of St. James. Since the discovery of the apostle’s tomb, millions of pilgrims have crossed the continent to reach this Holy City in the ancient “finis terrae.” Today, this spiritual route is still a living tradition, although our visitors can also arrive easily in flights from numerous European and Latin American airports. 7 8 Because of its thousand-year-old hospitality T he city was founded around the Romanesque Cathedral and grew to receive and cater for all its pilgrims with wise hospitality. Today, Santiago still cultivates its charm, its rich heritage, generosity and love for excellence to offer unforgettable experiences to all those coming here. We are backed by more than a thousand years’ experience in receiving and looking after our visitors. Not many destinations can say the same. 9 10 Because of its legendary beauty A ccording to UNESCO, Santiago de Compostela is “beyond the shadow of a doubt one of the World Heritage’s most obvious properties,” “an ideal city which is overflowing with history and timeless.” The Cathedral, its squares and medieval streets make up one of Europe’s most beautiful urban settings. A city whose beauty moves you. 11 12 Because it is a small great city S antiago is great close up. Although it is the capital of Galicia, a Holy City and European Cultural Capital, its small size, its simple everyday life and safety make it a friendly, charming and warm city; easy to understand and get around, where everyone finds their own place. 13 14 Because it is young and lively T here is always something to do in Compostela. The lively university atmosphere, the variety of cultural events, the shops selling crafts, gold articles and silverware, and Galician fashion; the traditional festivals, such as that of the “Apóstol,” and its surprising and amusing nightlife, make Santiago a lively destination all year round. 15 16 Because of its gastronomy N obody ever forgets Santiago’s fine cuisine. In its market, called “Plaza de Abastos,” and in its more than a thousand restaurants, the city offers the delicious, fresh and healthy Atlantic cuisine. Fine dining is a Compostela obligation; going out for a drink and some tapas, a pleasure. 17 18 Because of its infrastructure W ith 5,500 beds (4,700 in hotels with more than three stars), the range of accommodation includes historic buildings, designer hotels, charming hotels and gastronomy hotels. There are another 5,000 beds in facilities specially designed for meetings and congresses, and an extensive network of specialised businesses that offer all the professional services required by the MICE sector. 19 20 Because it is the centre of Galicia S antiago de Compostela is the obligatory starting point for discovering Galicia. “Finis terrae,” centuries-old forests, Atlantic beaches only 30 minutes from the city, make up the landscape featuring Roman and medieval towns, remote monasteries, chapels along the Way of St. James, Celtic settlements, seafaring villages... all within reach. 21 22 ... and because the SCCB makes it easy W ith the Santiago de Compostela Convention Bureau, the city opens up to the event organiser. And more: Tour of the old town, monumental churches, contemporary architecture, traditional trades, artists’ studios and a lot more. 62 63 Traditions and specialities Only in Santiago and in Galicia! “Botafumeiro” The flight of the world’s largest censer can be seen on a few occasions in Santiago Cathedral. You will never forget its impressive swinging, making it almost touch the basilica’s vault in front of the amazed pilgrims’ eyes. An unrepeatable experience. “Romería” in the forest A genuine Galician fiesta in an oak grove, with marquee, octopus stand, local wine and bagpipe players to liven things up. “Queimada” Young Obelix fell into a cauldron of Galician “queimada” (flamed eau-de-vie)... And was never the same. “Queimada” is a traditional Galician drink and, at the same time, quite a spectacle. The rite of the flame consuming the eau-de-vie’s alcohol is accompanied by a magic spell to scare away the bad spirits’ “meigallo” or evil influence. Traditional trades tour A walk around the city to discover its living artisanal traditions: from jet stone and silver to braiding or leather, ceramics or lacework. Concerts in churches Santiago has more than 20 monumental churches, from the Romanesque to the neoclassical stye, many of which host medieval, ancient or classical music concerts. University “tuna” The “tuna” is a student music group that is characteristic of Spanish universities, combining music, fun, nightlife and flirting. Santiago’s “tuna” is considered the oldest in Europe. Guaranteed partying and amusement. Traditional music and dancing Bagpipes, drums and cheerful tambourines accompany group dances such as the “muñeira,” in a tradition linked to Atlantic arc folklore, from Brittany to Scotland. For detailed information and bookings, consult the Santiago de Compostela Convention Bureau: [email protected] 64 65 Shopping Elegant craftwork, gastronomy for taking away, the outstanding success of Galician fashion or the charm of “open” shopping centres make Santiago a shopper’s paradise. Galician fashion International Galician brands such as Adolfo Domínguez, Roberto Verino, Antonio Pernas, Purificación García, Zara... all only a few metres from each other. Silverware and jet-stone work The old medieval trades are kept alive by dozens of silversmiths and jet-stone workers surrounding the Cathedral, with traditional and contemporary designs. Sargadelos ceramics Cobalt blue beauty and modernist designs in crockery, adornments and more. Camariñas lace The most delicate lacework in trousseaus, table linen, baby’s clothes... Leather and braiding Artisanal leather and traditional costumes for daily use. Delicatessen Cakes and pastries made in enclosed convents, Galician wines, the only European eau-de-vie with its own Designation of Origin, cheeses, canned seafood, algae, sea-urchin caviar, cold meats, chestnuts, almond cakes, chocolate... 66 67 Hotel capacity Top-rate hotels in Santiago de Compostela Category Number Rooms Beds 5* 4 450 867 4* 14 1.374 2.617 3* 18 706 1.260 TOTAL 36 2.530 4.744 Capacity of Meeting and Exhibition Rooms Nº. of meeting rooms Total room capacity* Largest room Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Galicia 23 3.560 2.100 4.250 Auditorio de Galicia 3 1.312 1.002 1.000 USC (University of Santiago de Compostela) 9 1.164 320 Venues in foundations, museums, etc 8 2.040 700 5-star 37 2.342 4-star 82 7.565 capacity venues Hotels (category) Exhibition M2 Practical information Congress Halls Name 69 Hotels Translation Air Conditioning Technical Service Natural Light Accessible WIFI Internet Connection Parador Hostal dos Reis Católicos. ***** GL Meeting Rooms Capacities Theatre School Imperial "U" Banquet Cocktail m2 Capilla Real 220 120 84 -
