Dear ICHS Alumni,
Parents and Friends,
When we opened the doors of ICHS
to begin this new school year, we
were energized by all the smiles on
our students’ faces. It’s a new year
full of excitement and possibilities,
and each and ever y one of our
faculty and staff are thrilled to be
taking this journey alongside them.
As we welcome back many
familiar faces, we also want to
acknowledge our new Pastor of the
Immaculate Conception Parish,
Fr. Tom Paul. We will continue
to grow and flourish as a high
school community, and ICHS – in
conjunction with our new leadership
– will remain steadfast in our
commitment to fulfill our mission.
This year the Diocese of Joliet
is celebrating the Year of the
Eucharist. As a Catholic school,
we recognize that our true spiritual
inspiration can be found in our
Lord’s gif t to us – the Eucharist.
Our students will be encouraged to
make the Eucharist the center of
their lives, and seek his guidance
during their journey at ICHS and
beyond.
May Our Lady of the Immaculate
Conception continue to guide
and protect you.
Sincerely,
Pamela M. Levar

GROWTH
Four YEARs OF GROWTH
preparing for college, and for life
At Immaculate Conception High School, we open students’
eyes to creative ideas, new possibilities, and a world of
opportunities for their future. With a rich, seventy-four year
history, ICHS has a strong academic curriculum rooted in the
spirit of the Catholic faith. Over four years at ICHS, we provide
our students with the freedom to explore many interests – in
class and beyond.
In a smaller environment like ours, ICHS students experience
incredible growth. Our student-centric approach means our
teachers provide individualized attention. The ICHS faculty and
staff challenge our students each and every day – encouraging
them to take risks and advance, both intellectually and
spiritually.
At a time when private education is facing many difficult
challenges, Immaculate Conception High School continues
to thrive. Enrollment has grown for the fifth straight year
giving our campus a sense of energy and excitement that’s
impossible to ignore. With 430 years of collective teaching
experience, our staff brings the right mix of seasoned and
innovative teaching styles.
At ICHS, academics come first. The “statistics” of the 2010
graduating class are outstanding: the top 54% of the class
collectively earned over $3 million in college scholarships, and
the top 5% average ACT score was 31. Furthermore, 33%
of the Class of 2010 were members of the National Honor
Society, 16% were Illinois State Scholars, one was a National
Merit Finalist, and 100% are continuing their education.
ICHS also provides a variety of athletic opportunities for our
students to build competitive spirit and excel on their field of
play. They develop character, show superior sportsmanship,
and treat their coaches, teammates, and opponents with
respect.
Our athletic programs achieved new heights in 2010 – the
ICHS Varsity Baseball team topped Regional, Sectional, and
Super Sectionals and went on to the Class 2A State Final Four.
Our Girls Basketball Team also won at Regionals, continuing
on to become Sectional Finalists and play in the Sweet Sixteen.
As you can see, our students are empowered to achieve in
academics and athletics, but, more importantly, in college
and in life. They go on to prestigious schools and meaningful
careers. Since these young men and women will help shape
the future of our world, at ICHS every student counts.

The class of 2010 left an indelible mark on ICHS that can be characterized by leadership, growth and
accomplishment. Like their classmates before them, members of the Class of 2010 were rewarded for
their hard work in high school by being accepted into some of the most prestigious universities in the
nation. As you read the highlights from some of our most recent graduates, you will see that not only did
they excel in the classroom, but made the most of their high school years by getting involved in a wide
variety of activities. Most notably, all of the students you will read about below earned honor roll during
every semester and Academic All-Conference honors in all four years.

WELCOME , FATHER
welcome to

FATHER
TOM PAUL
we l c o m e t o t he IC H S fa mily
To say that Fr. Tom keeps busy would
be an understatement. Along with
a broad range of experience with
other area high schools such as
Benet Academy, Marian Catholic
and Montini, Fr. Tom is also most
notably a member of the Diocesan
School Board and also played a key
role in the recent Meitler Strategic
Initiative, which extensively studied
the Diocesan schools.
Immaculate Conception High School
is pleased to welcome Fr. Thomas
Paul as the new Pastor for the IC
Parish community. Fr. Tom comes to
us from St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in
Naperville where he has served as
Pastor for the past four years.
Fr. Tom was born and raised in Joliet,
Illinois, where his parents chose to
pursue a Catholic education for their
four children. Fr. Tom has one brother
and two sisters, all of whom received
their elementary education at St.
Joseph’s in Joliet. Fr. Tom went on
to attend Joliet Catholic High School
after which he entered the seminary.
Ordained as a priest on November 5,
1977, Fr. Tom has served in DuPage
County for 30 of his 33 years in the
priesthood.
Another craft that Fr. Tom is
passionate about is architecture and
design. In addition to his many
responsibilities over the years, Fr.
Tom has managed to find time to
help parish communities nationwide
who are planning new church/
chapel construction or renovating
their existing space. In this role as
a Liturgical Design Consultant, Fr.
Tom has helped over 100 different
facilities and is currently working
on a Chapel located in upstate New
York. Going out with friends, being
outdoors, attending sporting events
and going to movies are just a few
of the things that Fr. Tom likes to do
in his free time. A former runner, he
now stays active by walking on the
treadmill regularly. This past January,
Fr. Tom traveled to Rome for about
four months on sabbatical, staying at
North American College where he had
a view of the Vatican. “The highlight
of my stay in Rome was definitely
being there for Holy Week,” recalled
Fr. Tom.
When asked about his view of
the high school, Fr. Tom states,
“Immaculate Conception Parish and
schools have a long history with a
great deal of pride and traditions.” He
went on to share, “I’ve only been on
campus for a short time, but it’s easy
to see the dedication and commitment
that our administration, faculty and
staff put forth to enrich our students
in the Catholic faith.” Fr. Tom is very
optimistic about the future of the
high school and plans to continue
the pursuit of teaching the value of a
Catholic education by staying true to
the ICHS mission, projecting a clear
identity, and doing whatever possible
to keep tuition affordable. “One of
our challenges will be to remain
accessible to all those interested in
attending a Catholic high school,
further explained Fr. Tom. “The
young men and women who come
to ICHS as freshmen, graduate as
changed individuals. They experience
a quality college-prep education, but
more importantly have developed
spiritually.”
Though much has changed since his
first visit to ICHS as a junior at Joliet
Catholic for a basketball game, Fr.
Tom wants to make sure one message
remains clear “IC High School will
continue to thrive – there is no need
to question that. We look forward to a
great future in our ministry of helping
young people become followers of
Christ.”
Father Jim our
Father Jim Murphy has been named
the new Pastor at St. Isidore’s Parish in
Bloomingdale, IL after eleven years of
deepest thanks for all
leadership at the Immaculate Conception
Parish. During his time with the IC Parish,
your guidance at IC parish
Fr. Jim has accomplished so much – from
facility improvements and spiritual counsel during national times of crisis, to advocating
the identity of our Immaculate Conception parish: we pray, we educate, and we serve.
It was under Fr. Jim’s direction in the Parish Assessment and Renewal program, that the
parish leadership was reorganized into five groupings: Worship, Christian Service, Formation, Community Life, and
Administration -- to better coordinate the many ministries of IC parish. In addition, the new Welcome Home Initiative
was started under Fr. Jim’s guidance, and has already begun to reinvigorate our parish.
fond farewell
The Immaculate Conception High School family would like to thank Fr. Jim for his dedication, direction and
stewardship in our faith community – especially our high school. May God continue to bless Father Jim in his
service to the Lord.

someone you should know
Mike La Spisa
It was his experiences at ICHS that
helped make him who he is today
– of that Mike has no doubt. These
are now the lessons the La Spisa
family is able to pass on to their
children today so that they may grow
their own seeds of service.
Mike La Spiphilanthropy that ALL started with ICHS
At Immaculate Conception High
School, one of the core values of
our Catholic life is found in Christian
service. It is our hope that when our
students graduate from ICHS, they
leave with a foundation of giving
to others that can be built upon
throughout the rest of their lives.
Mike La Spisa, Class of 1985, didn’t
realize right away that the seed of
service had been planted during his
four years at ICHS. Admittedly, he
sort of unearthed this seed years
after he was an ICHS student. A
huge fan of football legend Walter
Payton, it was in 2001 that Mike
thought it would be fun to get some
guys together for a day of golf and
raise a little money for the Walter
Payton Foundation. Shortly after,
Mike decided to team up with close
friend Bill Paschen to expand their
efforts with a fall gala/auction in
addition to the golf outing in Lake
Geneva. What started out as a way
to get some friends together for a
good cause quickly grew into a
charity organization called Kickoff
for Kids – all because Mike La Spisa
chose to cultivate that seed of service.
“I was taught a lot over my four years
at ICHS that eventually sank in,”
explained Mike. “The importance
of community, helping others and
giving back were the most important
lessons that I took from ICHS.”
Born and raised in Elmhurst, Mike
has chosen this community to raise
his own family. Mike and his wife
Cathy, who married in 1999, moved
to Elmhurst shortly after their oldest
daughter Alex was born in the Spring
of 2001. Within a few short years,
the La Spisa family grew, with the
birth of their son Jake in 2003 and
daughter Caroline in 2006. Never
one to sit still, Mike recently started
the “Jefferson School Dad’s Club”
at the school where his children
attend. The main goal of the new
club comes as no surprise – to raise
funds which have already been
used to install a basketball court
behind the school this past summer.
“Cathy and I want our children to
understand that being charitable is a
way of life in our home, and they are
learning from a very young age how
important it is.”
“I am very blessed in many ways, so
I truly want to be able to help others
that are not as fortunate – especially
children,” said Mike. “My goal now
is to get more Elmhurst residents
involved so that we can focus on the
children in need right here in our
own community.”

Kickoff for Kids is an organization
dedicated to enriching the lives of local
kids. This volunteer-run organization
raises funds for organizations such as the
Elmhurst Public Library Reading Program,
area youth running clubs, and ICHS’s
White Knight Foundation, plus many
more. KOK recently donated $30,000 to
build two “kid zone” playrooms in the new

participants, and volunteers for making the 18th
Annual Scholarship Golf Outing such a huge success.
On Friday, June 18th, 140 golfers turned out for
the 18th Annual ICHS Scholarship Golf Outing
which was held at Bloomingdale Country Club.
Although rain shortened the golf portion of the
event, participants still enjoyed the festivities,
including a putting contest for the chance to win
$5,000, competitions for the longest drive, closest
to the pin, as well as a hole-in-one at all the par
3 holes. In addition, every golfer had a chance to
hit a hole-in-one on the 11th hole to win a 3-year

introducing BOYS lacrosse
c o m i n g i n s p r i n g 2 0 1 1 t o IC H S at h l e t i c p r o g r a m
ICHS Athletics is proud to announce that Boys
Lacrosse will be added as a Club sport beginning in
the Spring 2011. The sport of lacrosse is a fast paced
game which is similar to hockey. Lacrosse is a contact
sport with specialized positions that allows athletes of
any size to participate.
Tom O’Brien of Elmhurst has been named Head
Coach for the new Lacrosse program at ICHS. A
native of Long Island, New York, Coach OB has been
playing lacrosse since he was a young boy, including
helping his high school team win two consecutive NY
State Championships with a perfect record of 48-0.
Coach OB went on to play at the University of Notre
Dame. In recent years, he has coached youth leagues
in Elmhurst, Wheaton and Hinsdale. The Elmhurst
program, which he helped start in the spring 2010,
was so popular that it quickly became the second
biggest youth program in the western suburbs.

annual fund report
capital campaign update
g r e at t h i n g s a r e h a p p e n i n g !
We are proud to welcome Father Thomas Paul and
his leadership and vast experience to ICHS. Under his
guidance, we will continue to move forward with this
capital campaign.
Now that Fr. Tom has had some time to settle in, we
are excited to move ahead with our capital campaign.
As we bring Fr. Tom up to speed on the data collected
in Phase I from our feasibility study, we will continue
through the Preparation Phase as planned with focus
groups, additional fine-tuning of our goals for the
campaign, as well as continuing to identify volunteer
leadership among the many other tasks that are
associated with this phase. Again, we are very excited
to keep the momentum of this campaign building, as
we know you are too.
Thank you for your continued support and stay tuned
for more information on the next phase!
