Basic anatomy, dynamic lighting and the use of pastel all will be explored as well as learning tips on how to best create force and character in a human face. A Painted Autumn Seascape: Dunn Exploring the techniques and concepts of the Impressionists, students will paint a beautiful, atmospheric autumn seascape. Monet, Pissarro and others will be discussed in order to emulate their style and wonderful sense of color and light. They will be encouraged to invent their own compositions using a painting of the past for inspiration. Express Yourself with Sculpture: Rose Express yourself with sculpture and mixed media! Love to construct sculptures along with painting and collage? Mixed media allows us to combine all of these to create unique works of art. With a focus on collage and assemblage, this course teaches students to experiment with wet and dry media in new ways that are truly expressive. Folded Paper Sculptures: Torrance Dragons, puppies, kittens and buildings are all possible with learning just a few special folds. We can combine shapes to make bigger forms! Handmade For The Holidays: Rose A Holiday gift making workshop where children can create a one of a kind gift for family and friends! They will be making jewelry, picture frames, painted glass vases…to name a few. Art Inside-Out: Graefe Make a one of a kind ornament using unique mediums and materials! Make a gift bag and card to complete. Jewelry Making: Mjolsness Create your own jewelry for gift giving this holiday season! Learn how to use beads with string and wire to make bracelets, necklaces, earrings and more! Let It Snow: Walbert Do you want to build a snowman? Do you want to make a snowflake? Do you want to paint some snow? This class is loaded with FROZEN fun. Not A Box!: Walbert Come think outside the box and transform simple boxes into awesome works of art with loads of materials. Origami Crane Mobile: Mjolsness Learn the ancient art of Origami paper folding. Create a hanging piece of art with cranes and clear thread. Rose’s Flowers: Walbert Learn to make beautiful flowers inspired by the special story – “Rose’s Garden” by Peter H. Reynolds. The Decorated Paper: Walbert Learn super cool techniques to make beautiful marbleized, folded, printed and dyed paper. Very Silly Turkeys: Dunn Students will learn to draw and create a group of very funny turkeys using paints, pastels and a variety of tactile materials and frame them in a complementary color scheme. They will enjoy dressing them in disguise and using their creativity through unusual color, design and form. Holiday Break Class Descriptions A Merry Mosaic Painting!: Dunn Using bits of stained paper and cloth on a square canvas children will create a wonderful holiday mosaic with a glossy tile-like finish. Students will choose a specific icon of the season and develop a unique collage around their choice. A Winter Artists Workshop: Dunn Come join artist Kathy Dunn as we explore the winter season in a creative way! Children will explore famous artists who have drawn inspiration from the season. We will create a mysterious New England style snowstorm in the style of Jamie Wyeth, complete with snowmen and blizzard-like feel, as well as a whimsical, fantasy style painting as we examine the children’s artist Elisa Kleven. This class will provide children with lessons on composition, design, use of texture, and basic and painting skills while handling a wide variety of art materials. Art Inside-Out: Graefe Make a one of a kind ornament using unique mediums and materials! Make a gift bag and card to complete. Art & The Holidays: Dunn In this 3 hour workshop, children will learn all about the various ways Santa has been portrayed throughout the ages. We will create a beautiful Victorian-style Santa using paints, pastel, cloth, and assorted papers. We will also create a unique coordinating frame in gold enamel, rhinestones and oil pastel. Line Drawing: Mjolsness Draw with one continuous line to create a portrait, still life and landscape drawing. Make and Take: Rose Make and take art projects that bring out the artist in all! The children will be working with a variety of materials to create sculptures, drawings and paintings! Miniature Shadow Boxes: Mjolsness Use your imagination to tell a story in a repurposed candy tin. Hand paint, cut out shapes and vintage illustrations to create a 3-D story. Origami Crane Mobile: Mjolsness Learn the ancient art of Origami paper folding. Create a hanging piece of art with cranes and clear thread. Painting Beautiful, Ornamental Holiday Trees: Dunn Children may dress up the holidays by designing and painting a colorful Tiffany inspired tree using black puffy glue, enamel paints, assorted jewels and clay. Using stain glass windows as we will recreate our own faux window, painting our trees within a decorative border. Students will select a theme for their tree and create the color and ornaments to best express their ideas. Artists such as Chagall, Klimt and even Grandma Moses will be discussed. Paper Quilling: Torrance This Victorian art form is making a comeback, to make frilly card or creepy crawlers. It’s very useful to decorate a package too. Party Like a Penguin!: Walbert Come learn all about penguins. Create a cool penguin collage with snowy background, a penguin puppet and more. Follow the penguin foot prints to the party! Pool Noodle Sculptures: Torrance Pool noodles will be sliced and diced to create flowers, creatures, trains, planes or masks. Pop-Up Card: Torrance We can make a greeting card that will pop up with a message or design. 3-D leads to thinking creatively. School of Fish: Graefe Artful projects all about fish. All hand made using unique materials. Use as a gift and make a gift bag and card. Smear, Slide and Blend: Torrance Using Oil pastels and construction paper we will create awesome blends to create landscapes, candy canes, and the North Pole. Bread Dough Sculpture: Torrance Flowers, butterflies, and caterpillars will be some ideas for this permanent no bake dough. The recipe will be sent home for more entertainment. Stamp and It’s a Wrap: Torrance We will use different stamps, stenciling and papers to make a gift wrap bag or box….Then you can fill it with a special treat! Coiled Paper Baskets: Torrance Colorful magazine pages will be coiled to create a festive New Year Basket. The Magical Art of Thomas Kinkade: Dunn Students in this workshop will learn to create a beautiful old-fashioned New England Village set deep within a snowy scene. We will use the rich color palette of the artist as well as emulating his painting technique and his use of sparkling, glittery light. Students will be encouraged to change and adapt his work into their own ideas. Collage Pet Portrait: Mjolsness Use handmade papers in a variety of colors, patterns and textures to create a collage of your pet. Bring a photo of your pet or picture of your favorite furry creature for reference. Drawing and Painting Winter Creatures of the North: Dunn Come explore texture, form and value while you learn to create various animals of the north. We will use pastel, liquin, watercolors and pens to sketch bears, snowy owls and other creatures in their environments. Twisted Crepe Paper: Torrance Using an electric mixer, we will make the neatest cord, to create a colorful vase for a gift! What a Relief!: Walbert Learn to make dimensional designs with paper and foil relief techniques.
