After School Program Spring Semester 2014 After School Program Carrollton offers students the opportunity to participate in three distinct After School Programs: Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall Monday, January 6 - Thursday, June 5 Enrichment Program and After School Academic Program (ASAP) Tuesday, January 21 - Friday, May 16 Online Registration Monday, December 9 Activities and Programs Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall The Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall provides supervised homework time, outdoor and indoor recreational activities and social time with other classmates. The program is offered on every full day of school after dismissal until 6:00 p.m. but it is not offered on early dismissal days. ■ It may be utilized on an “as needed” basis and is billed at a rate of $25.00 a day. ■ There is also an option to enroll for an entire semester at a rate of $12.00 a day ($1,060.00 per semester). Enrichment Program The Enrichment Program reinforces, expands and enriches the school curriculum. Courses and activities have been designed to actively engage students in a variety of activities to encourage social, emotional and academic growth. All students enrolled in the Enrichment Program and After School Academic Program (ASAP), can stay in the Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall Program until 6:00 p.m. at no extra charge the day of the class. Ceramics — Innovative Hand Building Art Pieces • Maite Oca (Primary) Students will explore working with clay to create playful sculptural projects and a variety of functional pieces. Students are encouraged to experiment creatively and expand on what they have learned and will finish off their art work using a range of glazing and painting techniques. Pieces will be fired upon completion, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Chess • Stormont Kings Learn and play chess with our experienced, expert chess instructors. Each class is designed to be fun-filled with activities and lessons designed to teach the game in a fun and exciting way! Digital Photography • Daniel Linares Ceramics — Learn and Play with Clay • Maite Oca (Montessori) Students will explore the basics of hand building with clay and will finish off their art work using a variety of glazing and painting techniques. Pieces will be fired upon completion, creating pieces the girls can cherish for a lifetime. 2 Learn how to use a digital camera and to edit photos using a computer. Practicing techniques such as framing and exposure adjustment, students have the opportunity to practice their skills taking pictures both indoors and outdoors, uploading the images and editing them in a personal, journalistic, or artistic style. Eat Smart Program • Christina Algeciras Students are taught how to read food labels, detect marketing deceptions and are introduced to the ideas of sustainability and stewardship while learning to identify and choose healthful foods. Students will cook simple and nutritious meals from scratch utilizing wholesome, organic and local ingredients whenever possible. Through experimental learning, students will discover cooking is fun, educational, and less expensive than eating out or buying processed foods. Fun with Arts and Crafts • Mary Larsen Using traditional and recycled materials, students will be making functional art objects such as musical instruments, jewelry boxes, Japanese fans, castles and other fun projects. During the process, they will be learning new techniques in various media. self-defense but also the fundamental goals to shape successful human beings, who will help create a better world. The goal is to teach students excellent behavior at home and at school, develop an awareness of the importance of fitness, build confidence, self-discipline, academic excellence and the tools to achieve any goal. Mind Lab This class helps children to enhance their cognitive, social and emotional skills using well-selected thinking games. The games teach the fundamentals of problem solving, decision making, deduction and induction procedures, teamwork and communication. Concepts are applied to real life situations. WORLD LANGUAGE PROGRAM A “learn by doing” approach. We explore cultural traditions and practices using everyday phrases, stories, games, and music in our classes. ___________________ Hola! • Carolina Burelli This course develops the skill and understanding students need to wield Spanish conversationally. Every exercise and activity has students speaking, listening, acting, and learning, and is enriched by studies of Spanish and Latin American cultures. Adventures Through China Fundamental of Theater • Marianne Palacios Is your child singing, dancing, and wanting to put on a show? This class is designed to teach the fundamentals of theater. That includes: script analysis, an actress’s process, basic acting, ensemble building, and a final performance at the end of the course. The goal for the class is for students to gain knowledge of theatrical terms, respect for the people on stage, and to feel significantly more confident with who they are both on and off the stage. The only limitations we have are the ones that are in our own mind! Martial Arts • Nicole Plummer Martial arts is a great way to condition your mind as well as your body. This class will teach the basics of the martial arts not only to attain physical fitness and participate in • Cherry Zhong Discover the wonders of China! Students learn to speak, read, and write Mandarin Chinese through games, role-playing, and storytelling. Explore the world’s last pictorial language and its fascinating and tumultuous history. Emphasis is placed on learning uniquely Chinese customs in the ways of cuisine, geography, and social conventions. Bonjour! • Maryse Adler Bonjour les amis! In this class students will develop an awareness of the French Language through stories, rhymes and songs practice memorization skills and learn new vocabulary with games and dances. The lessons are planned around a diversity of themes and projects, which are practical, interesting and great fun! 3 Pursue an Instrument! Private lessons of piano, violin and guitar available upon request. Half Hour ($35.00) or 45 minutes ($50.00). Scrappy Books & More • Nina Obregon Let your imagination soar as you transform discarded books into a creative piece of work that encompasses a theme and tells a story. Students will learn to use a variety of scrapbooking materials to create “Altered Books” and “Story Boxes.” They will also learn to creatively use a variety of media, techniques and tools. Required for class — discarded baby board book, discarded hardcover book, and photos. ROBOTICS Robotics is a sport for the mind! It is a concrete and tangible way to build and strengthen cognitive development, as well as other academic areas such as mathematics, engineering, communication skills, strategic thinking and goal-oriented thinking. Most importantly children learn to appreciate the passion of learning, challenge, and desire to succeed. Robotics allows students to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Little Lego Engineers • Carlina Lerma (Montessori and Grade 1) New students to the program will use their imagination to turn a room full of Lego Building Bricks into their very own creation. They will learn about “structural integrity, design and a practical sense of Geometry”. They will create their own robotics journals and present their designs to the class. More advanced students will use WEDO Lego Education Kits to help them become programmers and make their creations come to life. Senior Lego Engineering • MT Valle and Carlina Lerma (Primary – Grades 2 and 3) New students will be exposed to all types of Lego Building Blocks, Lego We Do and Scratch programs to help them create musical sculptures, dancing animals, and other playful inventions. Those with more experience will build and program robots using the Lego Mindstorm Kits. Premier Lego Engineering • MT Valle (Intermediate and Junior High) Students will learn to build different types of robots using the Lego Mindstorm Kits. Before the end of the semester they will learn how to build their own robot with different sensors to perform a specific task on our Renewable Energy Mat. 4 Soccer • Eric Vasquez This developmental program teaches the appropriate skills for each age group. This combination promotes success and the desire to learn Yoga • Christina Algeciras Come experience the joy of Yoga! Each class includes breathing techniques, warm-up, poise practice and relaxation. Students will learn the fundamental yoga principles by engaging in poses, music, dance. This class is Dance Program • Marielly Ramirez Pre-Ballet This is an introduction to dance for children 3 to 5 years old. The class focuses on developing loco motor skills through creative movement and the basic elements of ballet. The routine for this class includes a floor warm-up followed by ballet barre and center and across the floor exercises. During these exercises the children will learn the movement as well as the correct terminology to name the steps they learn. The class work is designed to allow for the use of imagination and creativity in order to teach the dancers to move efficiently and in an organized way within the group. Built upon the basic movements of ballet, the concept learned in this class are excellent ways to build cognitive physical skills for any child. Beginning Ballet Offered to children 6 years or older, the class emphasis is placed on the development of alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination, style and an understanding of the vocabulary used to describe movement in ballet. This class helps dance students to transition to more structured ballet dance technique. Proper posture is emphasized and the class also has a strong component of creative movement and locomotor skills development exercises. Pre-Flamenco This is an introduction to flamenco for children 3 to 5 years old. The class is designed to teach young children flamenco in a fun way. Students will develop a basic understanding of the rhythm, footwork and arm work used in this style of dance through activities appropriate for their age group. Castanets are also taught in this class. Beginning Flamenco Offered to children 6 years or older, this class formally introduces students to the rhythmic structure of flamenco while learning the basic technique of this type of dance. Emphasis is placed on correct posture and articulation of the arms and feet. In addition, sevillanas and basic castanet technique are taught in this class. 5 Handwriting Club Montessori This small group will look at skills children need to master before entering Kindergarten, such as: lines, shapes, grip and drawing a person. Session will consist of a motor activity, an interactive lesson with a multisensory approach using a variety of materials reinforcing with what they are learning in the classroom. Primary This small group will work on the basic components of handwriting that children will need to be successful in print or cursive. All activities will be multisensory, fun and engaging. Nicole has been an occupational therapist for over 15 years with a vast experience in pediatrics and adults. She is currently providing handwriting tutoring services to children in the Miami area. She is experienced in handwriting curriculums, such as Handwriting without Tears, D’ Nealian and Zaner- Bloser. After School Academic Program (ASAP) Schedule and Fees The After School Academic Program (ASAP) focuses on math and reading concepts, study skills and homework help and promotes collaboration between the tutor and teacher. At the end of the session, a narrative will be provided by the teacher to the parent. ■ Services are available for all subject areas for grade levels 1-8. ■ Student teacher ratio is 3 to 1. ■ Classes will be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment. Enrichment Program and After Achool Academic Program (ASAP): Registration and Procedures ■ Registration forms are available on the parent portal and should be submitted as soon as registration opens to guarantee a class space. ■ Registration must be made online. We will not accept walk-ins or mailed forms. ■ Online registration will begin on December 9, 2013. Enrollment in a class is subject to approval by the After School Office. ■ Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis through registration on the parent portal. ■ Payment must be received for the registration to be complete and space reserved in the class. ■ Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment. ■ If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by email or phone and receive a refund. ■ No credits or make-ups are available for absence. ■ Refunds and cancellations must take place prior to the third session. A $25 processing fee will be assessed per child. Extended Day Care / Library Study Hall and Enrichment Dismissal Procedures ■ At school dismissal, students are escorted to the designated Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall meeting place by their After School Program (ASP) teacher. At that point, all ASP students check in with their ASP staff member and begin their daily activities. A healthy snack will be provided to every student participating in an After School Program. ■ All children participating in our programs must be signed out by a parent or an authorized party. ■ All students enrolled in the Enrichment Program and After School Academic Program (ASAP), can stay in the Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall Program until 6:00 p.m. at no extra charge the day of the class. In addition, sign up for four enrichment classes and stay on Friday in the Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall at no charge. ■ All children will be signed out from both Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall, Enrichment Program and After School Academic Program (ASAP) by a parent or an authorized party in the following locations: • Montessori and Primary (Primary Library/Duchesne Campus) • Intermediate and Junior High (Founders Library/Barat Campus) ■ For your child’s safety and protection, all children will be dismissed by After School Program (ASP) teachers. If you need to pick up your child early from a scheduled class, please go directly to the Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall to sign out your child.
