APRIL 1984
Dear Mmbers,
i'm amazed that there is so much to be included in this Newsletter, coming
so soon after the last one.
Mind you, it is just as well the two are so close together,
because due to a minor discrepancy of the production programming in relation to the
planning forward in the editorial division of the Club... .i.e. through incompetence;
because of this trifling hitch the full list of Forthcoming Events was severely curtailed.
You mast have wondered what had happened to events like the ARC National Rally and the
Yeovil Festival of Transport.
So ignore the last list... concentrate on the one printed elsewhere in this
Newsletter.
ANNUAL GENERAL NEETING:
13th May at Chewton Mendip. Full details in the last Newsletter.
At the AGM we shall be looking for a new Treasurer. As you know David Bowyer has been
filling this post together with that of the Secretary .... , and, of course, doing an
excellent job. Initially he felt that it was time to reliqaish these two duties, while
he retained the job of Publicity and Public Relations Officer. However, I'm glad to
report that as the publicity and Secretary's jobsare so closely interrelated, David is
happy to continue as Secretary, but feels the Treasurers job should go elsewhere.
This continues the good spreading out of the workload in the Club (I remember the days
when one person did the whole lot.. .not a happy burden to carryt), and so we now look
for someone who is happy with figures and book-keeping procedures, who probably lives
in the South/South West of the country, and who is ready to give a few hours to the Club.
Actually, it's not a very onerous job in the present set-up, but an important one, as
the Treasurer needs to guide the Committee and advise them of their financial situation
and what they have or have not got to spend to provide a better service for memben
Please get in touch with myself,(Andrew Stevens, )or David Bowyer if you can help.

LAND ROVER VIIEO EVENING March 22nd
It was hoped that the prospect of an evening of Land Rover films would stir membrers
to a weekday pub gathering. It indeed had the desired effect with about 40 attending.
The tapes were leht by Land Rover Ltd., and included excerpts from the BBC Top Gear
4 wheel drive special, the Paris Dakar Rally, Launch of the 4 door Range Rover and other
promotional tapes ..... of particular interest also was the Central TV Documentary filmed
partly at Eastnor Castle, and the 35th Anniversary Run from Solihull to Anglesey, in which
many members participated.
All in all a successful experiment which hopefully c-. be repeated in other parts of
the country. Special thanks to Andrew Cross and Graham Powney, and to David Bowyer who
despite a hectic ahedule was able to bring along the Eastnor and Coamemorative Run tapes.
Jamie Fairchild.
(I'm sure Jamie would be )'ippy to advise if you want to set up a similar evening. His
details on front cover.

The relevance of this information is that the differentials should be interchangeable
with the Land Rover ones, some of the engines utilise the same block (with internal
differences to camshafts and pistons in particular) and most mate up to the Land Rover

Glossary:
ICE - Inlet Over Exhaust.
i.e. Overhead Inlet valve, side exhaust valve as Land Rover
Series One.
i.e. all the valves in the cylinder head.
- OverHead Valve.
- Early diffs will be of the early bearing and flange type corresponding to early
Land Rovers. (circular flange on pinion for connection to propshaft, as opposed
to later squarer type, which used a slightly longer one.
NB. If you are going to do a transplant of any of these parts you should check beforehand that the parts you are about to obtain will in fact fit! £ It is remarkable how many
people don't.
Likewise, it is very foolish to fit a bigger engine to make it go faster
if you don't fit correspondingly larger brakes (and master cylinder) so that you can
stop again.

CHANGING FROM POSITIVE EAMRH TO NEGATIVE EARTH.
All the Series One Land Rovers were built with the Battery connected so that the Positive
terminal went to earth and the Negative fed the starter and all the electrics.
You may have noticed that all modern cars are wired up the other way round, and that
whereas a few years ago many radios and cassette players had a moveable plng so that
they could be altered to match the vehicles polarity, nowadays virtually everything is
made for Negative Earth only.
Many ownars have despaired of ever having a new stereo 45 watt output cassette radio,
to drown the rattles and wind noise, to sa nothing of the latest fantastic fuel saver.
But all is not lost ..... it is incredibly easy to change your vehicle's polarity so
that you can fit every possible electronic goody. (Did I hear a matter about originality,
or was it my imagination?)
First ....
you turn the battery round and re-connect the leads.
2. Disconnect from the D
the small lead, connect to it a wire, and flash the end
a couple of times to the + (positive) battery terminal. (It is literally that, as
you make contact there is a soft flash, not like the harsh sparks of a short.)
3. Change over the two leads on the coil ...swap them over.
4. Swap the leads over at the rear of the Ammeter.
5. If you have a radio fitted, the polarity plug will have to be changed over.
6. Heater. The circular Smiths heater appears to work as normal whichever way round
the leads are connected. But check anyway. Other heaters may need leads changing
over.
And that's it.
Just a few minutes work.

Now Noddy is a Series One Land Rover who during the last year has had many parts
replaced and overhauled. No matter what Noddy's driver replaced the little Land still
nodded along in great style.
Noddy decided to have a go at rallying during the summer of 1983 and attended a fair
number of rallies in the counties of Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. At every rally
Noddy would look out for other Landies to nudge bumpers with, but to no avail. Now
Noddy has no vices like dying at traffic lights, drinking petrol or throwing ice down
his carburettor in winter.. .well, not since the operation, anyway'
Alone and forlorn Noddy took his driver from event to event and sadly came to the
conclusion that he must be an oddball as he had managed to acquire eight pots in his
new heart, and so nobody wanted to join in his fun.
One fine summer weekend, Noddy trailed a Sunbeam Rapier to a vast rally of elderly
tinware fully expecting to meet at least one other Landie, but yet again nothing, except
purchasing a smashing set of new wheels in the autojumble. Even the stallholders were
EXECTING Series Ones by the amount of goodies offered for sale.
One day Noddy met a little light green 80" chum (Thingy) and they both toddled off
together taking their drivers to the last couple of rallies of the season - at last a
fellow Iandie to play with
During the whole of last summer Noddy came across two other Series Ones, one without
an owner and the other an unloved example which made only a brief appearance. The moral
to this little story is - just where are all the other restored Landies?
Or are Noddy
and Thingy the only two doing the rally scene in the South East - surely not ..... ,
so where were YOU?

SEAT BELTS FOR NYC
Avid readers of this publication may recall that some advice concerning
the fitting of seat belts to our cherished vehicles was given towards the
end of 1982, just prior to the new legislation on seat belts. Whilst the
advice dealt with the fact that we do not need to fit or wear belts in
Series One Land-Rovers, the actual problems of fitting belts to them were
not addressed. Having just finished the exercise of installing seat belts
in NYC, our 30" hardtop, I thought that the experience gained might be of
interest to other readers. So here goes.
The main problem with fitting belts is to provide anchorage points which
are strong enough to take the loads imposed on them should a crash occur.
The loads are not trivial. Consider the "standard" person weighing 2001bs
(just over 14 stone), the figure used by Land-Rover in stating the vehicles'
payloads. Correctly restrained, the human frame can survive a brief
acceleration or deceleration in the order of 30g. Under such conditions,
which may be experienced in a crash, the "standard" person will have an
effective weight of 6000 lbs, i.e. over 2h tons. The seat belts and anchorage
points must be capable of withstanding this sudden shock load, without failing.
So where do we mount our seat belts? We cannot bolt them directly to the
aluminimum body of the vehicle as the metal is not strong enough and the
mountings would tear free. The only safe answer is to bolt the lower mounting
points to the chassis of the vehicle, and the upper mounting point to a strong
part of the hardtop. In the case of NYC, the following solution was used:
1.
The Outer Lower Mounting Point
Using g steel, a plate approximately 4 " wide was made, which fits
into the front of the rear wheel box from underneath. The plate was
bolted to the seat box mounting point on the outrigger, the seat box
lid outer hinge point, and through the top of the wheel box just
behind the seat box bulkhead. Confused? Good. See diagram below.

The Inner Lower Mounting Point
2.
This one was easy. Using 1 " x 1;" angle iron of " thickness

and h" diameter tapped rod, clamps were constructed around
member behind the gear box as shown below.

The Upper Mounting Point
This finished up looking rather like a joint from the Forth Bridge!
I installed a length of 1 " x 1 " angle iron along the full length
of the roof, above the joint between the roof and the side of the
hardtop. A second piece of angle 1 " x 3" was fitted immediately behind
the door pillar and was bolted to the two mounting bolts through the
side of the hardtop. The top of this upright was bolted via a trunnion
plate to the 1 " x l " angle rail. The 3" wide vertical plate provides
an excellent mount for fitting an inertia reel block at the bottom of
the plate and the top anchorage point through the trunnion plate. It
looks something like this, viewed from inside the vehicle.

I hope that the foregoing scred will give you some idea of what is required
to provide what I consider to be suitably strong anchorages for seat belts.
Whether or not they would meet the relevant British Standard Specification
is a matter of conjecture. Certainly, it all looks very strong! Incidentally,
the specification covering this topic is ES AU48a:1971. it is obtainable

As you will find elsewhere in this Newsletter, we have included a
Membership Renewal Form. Why ? Because, for most of you, your membership will
expire at the end of May and we would like to start relieving you of your money
as soon as possible. As an added inducement to renew, as if you needed one, this
year we are issuing pretty pink membership cards.
Seriously thougN, faced with the prospect of some 780 renewals and the
amount of work that that entails, I would like to start the exercise as soon as
possible. So, if you have not already received your pink membership card, this
renewal reminder is for YOU. I look forward to renewing all 780 members. If
however you do not feel that you are able to renew please let me know. It will
save me a considerable amount of work issuing reinder notifes and will ensure
that yOu are not plagued by further reminders.

BRITOL CLASSIQ CAR SEW REPCHI
The weekend of 24/25 March was the occasion of the first major show of the year. This
was held at the Bristol Exhibiton Complex, and on the Club Stand there was a basic 86"
model and a newly restored rolling chassis of an 88" Ex WD Station Wagon owned by Jamie
Fairchild. Over the weekend there was a tremendous interest in the stand from both the
large numbers of existing members who called in, and also from the general public and
prospective new members.
Visitors came from as far as Plymouth in the south, Aberystwyth in the west and Swindon
in the east.
everyone
'Whiletalking to visitors it is interesting that almost/seems either to own or knows
someone who owns a Land Rover of one sort or another.
The strangest enquiry of the wedand must have been the gentleman who requested the
dixensions of the Land Rover connecting-rod, to see if they might replace the damaged set
in a vintage Aston Martin!
Generally the show was a great success with thousands of visitors coming over the two days
to see all sorts of vehicles exhibited by over 60 Car Clubs, as well as numerous trade
and autojumble stalls.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS.
Only half a page this time. The other half lists the chassis numbers in relation to
the various different models. Printed as they are the list can be detached from the
Newsletter and included in the Register for easy reference. Next time we will try to
include it with the Register.
The Photographs show the original prototype which was based on a Jeep chassis. Even at
this early stage it is possible to see the family likeness, although the central steering
position was dropped for the pre-prodnction models.
The other photograph show the 80" Station Wagon and the seating arrangement for the 86"
and 88" Station Wagons.
