College Auxiliary Annual Morning Tea
As this newsletter goes to print the College Auxiliary are hosting their annual morning tea. I am sure
that pictures and reports will be published next week but I take this opportunity to thank everyone
who has assisted in this event.
Fun Run Postponed
Due to inclement weather, the Annual Fun Run has been postponed until next Friday, 28 August. If
every student was to raise $50.00 then we would raise over $50,000 which will be taken to India with
our Pilgrims. Please give this event your full support.
An Evening with Hugh van Cuylenberg
Trinity College held a very informative evening with Hugh van Cuylenberg last Wednesday night
supported by over 150 parents. Hugh provided an informative and engaging presentation outlining
strategies to safeguard young people from, and assist those already suffering, mental illness. In
talking about his own personal life experiences, Hugh gave great insight into the keys to developing
resilience and recognising positivity in our world. I thank the Parent Council for assisting the College

Athletics Season
With the close of the Winter Sports Season, training has begun for Athletics Season. During the next
four weeks there is a rigorous training schedule with a number of Saturday morning competitions
culminating in the PSA Athletics Carnival to be held at AK Reserve on Friday, 11 September. I wish
those trying out for our Aths Team every success.
DT38 Foundation and the Socceroos
On Monday, 31 August Trinity College, along with the DT38 Foundation will be welcoming the
Socceroos Captain Mile Jedinak and a fellow player to the school. Mile will be here to promote and
educate our senior boys on the growing issue of Testicular Cancer. The DT38 Foundation was set up
after the death of young Perth/West Ham soccer player Dylan Tombides last year. Dylan was
misdiagnosed early on and unfortunately lost his battle with the disease at the young age of 20. It is
for this reason that his mum is fighting to educate and promote awareness to young men of this
disease. The assembly will be filmed in conjunction with Fox Sports and aired throughout the week,
leading up to the Socceroos qualifier against Bangladesh on September 3. If you do not want your

Year 12 Mass
On Tuesday, 25 August at 9:35am the Year 12 students will gather together for their Term 3 Mass.
As this will be their last year group Mass in the College Chapel, I encourage all parents to make a
special effort to attend. Following Mass you will have an opportunity to stay for a “cuppa” afterwards.

Traffic Issues – Plain Street – Friday, 28 August to Satuday, 12 September
The College has been informed that a new sewer line will be installed on Plain Street at the end of the
Month and that this will cause some traffic issues.
This work will mean that traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction on Plain Street between Hay
Street and Adelaide Terrace between 28 August and 12 September, as both southbound lanes are
closed for works. Traffic controllers will be onsite to provide assistance, but there may be some
delays.
A sign will be in place on Adelaide Terrace from 21 August (on the tear drop reserve near the
Causeway) advising of the upcoming works too.
Works will stop and traffic management will be removed on Sunday, 30 August for those getting
around Perth during the City to Surf.
I’ve attached the map of works for your information. There is also information on the MRA’s website
and they will post updates to their Twitter feed.

School Sport WA State Champions!
Congratulations to the Trinity Junior School soccer team who won the School Sport WA Soccer
Championship. This tournament was open to all Primary schools in Western Australia. Last Friday
afternoon and evening, the boys competed in a knock-out quarterfinal, semifinal and grand final. Each
game was very exciting and closely fought, the boys played so well as a team and were
enthusiastically supported by family, friends and staff. Thank you to Mr Luke Thompson for his
guidance in coaching the team, a fantastic achievement by our boys!

Catholic Performing Arts Festival
What a fantastic cultural week for our Junior School Boys. Well done to the Boys In the Groove, our
Year 4 Choir, Year 5/6 Choir and the Junior Vocal Ensemble for their outstanding performances and for
the way they represented our school as young gentlemen. Tonight sees the Junior Wind Ensemble
perform at Sacred Heart College, Sorrento. Special thanks to Ms Laura Boynes for her work with the
BIG boys, Mrs Ann Clarke for preparing the choirs, Mr Richard Braham and Mr Adrian Soares
who accompanied the boys on piano and Year 7 students George Hatton (7.3), Declan Ryan
(7.1) and Ben Doyle (7.5) who also provided percussion backing for choirs.

Interschool Chess
Congratulations to our Interschool Chess teams who competed this week. The boys played very well
and recorded excellent results. The A Team finished second, the B and C teams finished fifth and the
D Team won. It is pleasing to hear that the boys were also wonderful ambassadors during the
tournament.

Resilience Project
On Wednesday evening the Parent Council organised a talk by Resilience expert Hugh van
Cuylenburg from ‘The Resilience Project’. During the talk he stated some alarming statistics, such as
1 in 5 adolescent boys have an anxiety related disorder and 1 in 7 primary aged children also suffer
from some form of mental health issue, statistically this presents a big increase in the last 10 years.
He outlined ways to assist our children develop resilience, through gratitude, mindfulness and
empathy. Over the next couple of newsletters I will discuss mindfulness and empathy.
A simple way to teach our children (and ourselves) gratitude is to write down or discuss three things
each day that we are grateful for, or list three things that went well for us. After doing this for 21
days, it starts to re-wire our brains to look for positives and after six weeks it can lead to higher
energy levels, enthusiasm and determination, being more attentive and optimistic, having better
sleep and lower levels of anxiety.

Athletics
The Junior School House Athletics Carnival will be taking place next Wednesday and Thursday. On
Wednesday some of the boys are involved in jumps and the 800m, and on Thursday there is a range
of team and individual events. Parents are most welcome to come and support their boys. The boys
have the opportunity to have a sausage sizzle lunch, this is only available via pre-order, by
completing the form and sending to the classroom teacher with the correct money by Monday.
Book Week Dress Up
We are celebrating Book Week this coming week. The Junior School are celebrating Book Week with a
“Dress-Up as a Book Character day” on Monday, 24 August. The theme for Book Week this year is
Books Light Up Our World, so I encourage all boys to dress up in this theme or as a character from a
book they enjoy. I would also encourage boys to bring the book to school that contains their
character.

Prefects’ Corner
Bring out your wares and money to donate generously to Shopfront.
On Monday morning Br Peter Negus came to our Assembly and spoke to the Junior School about
Shopfront. The next few weeks all mission money will be used to buy toiletry items to be donated to
the homeless.
Last Friday our Soccer A team won the State Soccer Championship. Congratulations to all the boys
who were fine ambassadors for our school and thank you for the wonderful cheering from the support
team.
This week the Junior School is highly represented in the Performing Arts Festival. Year 4 Choir on
Monday, BIG on Tuesday, 5/6 Choir and JVC on Wednesday and on Friday the Junior Wind Ensemble.
Wow what a talented school we are!!!!
On Wednesday and Thursday 16 boys from Years 4 – 6 were involved in the Primary Interschool Chess
Tournament. What moves those boys made!
Finally on Friday, G&T boys represented the Junior School in the Da Vinci Decathlon, well done boys.

Red Cross Blood Donors
Did you know that EVERY blood donation saves three lives?
As part of being role model “Men for others” this year’s Prefects felt passionately about the cause and
through the excellent organisation of James Valentine(12.4), arranged for 13 students to donate
blood and commence the RED 25 Trinity College blood donation group. Giving up their own time at
such a hectic time of year was not ideal but with the support of their teachers five Year 11 and eight
Year 12 students ventured into the clinic to give blood for a very worthy cause. Special thanks go to
Miss Beth Parkinson who joined myself in donating with the group and supervising the boys.
It is a hope for this year’s Senior students that this can be a legacy left with the College that will be
completed for many years to come. With many Year 11s involved this year I am very confident this
will be the case.

Visiting author, Mark Greenwood
In our Year 7 English lessons the students have been exploring the art of storytelling. Last Friday, as a
special treat to help inspire our students to recount a story in a captivating and interesting manner,
the library and the English staff invited guest author Mark Greenwood to the College. Mark
Greenwood is an Australian author who has a passion for Australian history. His picture book titles
include Jandamarra, The Legend of Lasseter’s Reef, Simpson and his Donkey and Ned Kelly and the
Green Sash.
Mark Greenwood’s message was clear: ‘show rather than tell’. He was able to motivate the boys to
think about their writing experiences and to have the courage to write with authenticity, creativity
and flair. Mark retold many mini-stories to help captivate his audience, but to also educate the boys
on how to engage their audience and maintain their interest to the very end.
One memorable moment in the presentation would have to be the little tin box that Mark has in his
possession wherever he travels. One of our students, Tom Lindsay (7.1) was fortunate enough to
see what lay inside this little box. Tom wasn’t allowed to share the contents of his new discovery with
anyone. As you can imagine, the boys were not only captivated, but they were eager to also see
inside this old ‘treasure chest’. There were many sighs of disappointment and despair as they soon
realised the hidden treasure would remain a mystery, forever.
We thank Mark Greenwood for his insightful presentation and for inspiring our budding young
storytellers.

Note-taking Techniques
On Monday, 2 November the first WACE written examination (Chemistry) will begin. It is important
for Year 12 students in particular to refine their note-taking techniques so that they are prepared as
possible. Below are some suggestions on how to make the most out of your notes:
Techniques
Annotation: Involves you adding comments to a text that explain or critique what you have read.
These can be written in the margins and may accompany words you have highlighted to identify key
information.
Diagrams: Are a more visual form of taking notes. They could be mind-maps, charts, tables, graphs,
or perhaps a drawing to capture a process or cycle for example.
Paraphrasing: Is expressing the ideas and information of others in your own words. Transforming the
original source material helps you to understand it.
Summaries: Are focused on the main points of the source material so they are a shorter overview.
Using Notes for Revision
Your notes are a key part of your revision strategies when preparing for exams, or indeed, for
preparing for active, informed participation in class and when writing formal assessment tasks.
Organising and reviewing your notes can also help you make connections between individual ideas
and gain an overview of the whole subject.
You will need to revisit and work on the notes you have taken throughout the course.

Summarise your notes to help remember ideas and information – your goal now is to minimise them
to serve as a memory aid
Consider creating mind-maps or brief outlines to summarise.
Remember, revision is best done continually over the course of the next two months, not just a day
before your exams is scheduled.
Time management is very important as your study plans leading up to your first WACE exam should
include exam preparation and dates, supported by specific weekly plans for the week leading up to
and during your exams.

Electrical Apprenticeship
There is an opportunity for interested Year 11 & 12 Students to apply for an Electrical apprenticeship

Global Leaders Conference
GYLC is designed for high school students between 16 and 18 years old, who are keen on a career in
diplomacy, international relations or international business/finance. Students choose a GYLC session
that will be held between June and August 2016 in either:
1. a) The United States (Washington, D.C. and New York City);
2. b) Europe (Vienna, Prague and Berlin); or
3. c) China (Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou).
GYLC scholars will learn from diplomats, business leaders, lobbyists, academics, policy makers and
civil society representatives through speaking events, site visits and seminars. In addition, GYLC
scholars will explore and discuss global leadership issues with high-achieving students from all over
the world. They will be challenged to analyze and address economic, political, social, security and
other strategic challenges from country, regional and global perspectives. GYLC scholars will also
enjoy social and recreational activities and visit key tourist attractions in the cities where their
conference is held.

UWA has advised the College of significant changes to the application process for this prestigious
scholarship. There will now be a separate application process for the Fogarty Scholarship which opens
on June 1 and closes 31 August. In addition there will be now be an interview at the conclusion of
WACE exams.

WAAPA short course
Whether you are a beginner or a professional there is a WAAPA short course for you. Taught by
industry experts, these weekend and weeknight workshops offer practical tuition in the areas of
acting, singing and music theatre. WAAPA’s Explore Short Courses are a great way to get a taste of
what WAAPA has to offer, allowing you to fine tune your skills or learn some new ones. The courses
are running now and continue until October, and are aimed at everyone from teenagers to

Fairway UWA
Fairway UWA is an alternative entry scheme and support program throughout Year 12 for students
who have experienced financial hardship and other difficult circumstances. The program provides a
range of academic and social support, including an on-campus residential summer school, online
learning modules, and ongoing mentoring by current UWA students.
Fairway students who complete the program and achieve an ATAR of 70 will be made an offer of
admission to their choice of UWA’s four 3-year undergraduate degrees. Applications are now open to
students currently in Year 11, with a predicted ATAR of 65-80. For more information, and to complete

Trinity Hosts Socceroos
Trinity College in conjunction with the DT38 foundation have the privilege of hosting the captain of
the Socceroos Mile Jedinak and other Socceroos while they are down under for the World Cup
Qualifier against Bangladesh on September 3. On Monday, 31 August, Mile and a fellow team
member will visit Trinity to promote the DT38 Foundation, a foundation based on educating young
men on the prevention of testicular cancer. DT38 Foundation was set up in memory of Dylan
Tombides. Dylan was an Australian International and West Ham United Professional footballer who
passed away aged 20 after a three year battle with testicular cancer. He was thought so highly of at
West Ham, that they retired his number 38 shirt and made DT38 one of their principal charities. The
aim of the charity is to provide testicular cancer support and awareness through education and
opportunities. The assembly will bepresented by Fox Sports correspondent Daniel Garb, filmed by
FOX SPORTS and aired Australia Wide throughout the lead up to the Australian qualifier on
September 3.
Students have the opportunity to ask Mile and the Socceroos questions on stage. All they have to do
is place their question for their Socceroo in the question box. Six students will be chosen to interview
and meet the players at assembly.

Uniform Shop News
As winter sport has finished Honour letters will be coming out soon. Please note, Blazer honours can
only be processed on the last Wednesday of this Term. The shop will open on Wednesday, 23
September from 7:30am – 11:00am to process all blazers.
The uniform shop is very quiet at the moment, if you have time you might want to try on your
summer shorts. We are back into our summer uniform on the first day back of Term 4, Week One.
Tracksuits are all reduced in price and all sizes are in stock.
Please call in to the uniform shop for any uniform enquiries. We are open
every Tuesday from 7:30am – 4:30pm and Friday from 7:30am – 1:30pm during term.

The chess competition conducted in the P.L. Duffy Library to identify our top chess players for the
upcoming PSA chess competition heated up with some intense matches being played. We had some
David and Goliath match ups and the students selected to represent Trinity will be announced shortly.

Winners of #TCVoice4Radio Competition
We were amazed by the high standard of entries for the #TCVoice4Radio Competition. Thank you to
all entrants and congratulations to the final seven: Ben Tucker (6G), Harry Smith (6G), Thomas
Payne (9.3), Dimitri Mazarakis (4G), Bon Natasi (4W), Benjamin Oliveri (9.7) and Ted Smith
(4G). All these students went on a tour of the Sonshine 98.5FM studios on Wednesday and took part
in a surprise Rap/Tongue Twister session that was broadcast yesterday on the afternoon show with
Christine. Thank you to Connor, Christine, Tyson, Taylor and Chela from Sonshine for giving the
students an awesome afternoon. Thanks also to Mr Paul Colreavy (’82) who provided Hoyts double
movie passes for our finalists. Our three final competition winners are Ben Tucker, Harry Smith and
Thomas Payne, they all recorded a 30 second promotion for Trinity College which will be broadcast
during September on the Sonshine 98.5FM afternoon show. We would like to thank all the teachers
and students who supported this competition.

Congratulations to the 1st XI Soccer Team for a magnificent season. The boys drew 1 – 1 with Christ
Church to share the Lawe Davies Cup with Christ Church. The boys have showed great commitment to

Junior School State Soccer Champions
For the first time, this year, the Junior School soccer team entered the School Sport WA Soccer
Championship. The boys played in the regional championships where they won the competition,
defeating Oberthur Primary School in the final 5-0. Alex Christodoulakis (5W) was named MvP of
the final. As a result of winning the regional championships, the team was invited with the other
regional champions and runner ups to compete in the state final. The event was held on Friday, 14
August at Beale Park, Spearwood.
The finals competition was very hard fought with our team winning their quarterfinal 1-0 VS Connolly
Primary School and then the semi-final 2- 1 VS Mandurah Baptist College. The final was to be played
against Coogee Primary School. The boys had worked very hard to get to this point, training and
playing since the beginning of term 2. All of that hard work payed off with them putting in their best
performance of the day winning the final 5 – 2 to be crowned State champions! Brandon Condo (6B)
was named MvP of the final.
I’d like to thank all the parents and teachers for all the support the team received during this soccer
season, it made the day really special for everyone involved.
