Whitney Weixelman was announced as the KUSM-Wichita recipient of the KAFP-F Hostetter Award which honors a fourth-year medical student who has promoted the values of family medicine during their medical school tenure. Rick Kellerman, M.D., was the guest speaker. Outgoing officers were honored - president: Whitney Weixelman; co-vice presidents: Stephanie Shields and Katie Tran; secretary: Ali Rueschhoff; KAFP representative: Daniel Nwachokor; Tar Wars coordinators: Natalie Hagman and Jordan Meyer; 2nd-year representatives: Alex Johnson, Kurtis Klecan, Ruth Wiens, and Dyllan Landry; 3rd-year representative: Jimmie Stewart; 4th-year representatives: Jonathan Baalman, Anna Hanson, and Trang Pham. Officers for 2015-2016 were announced: co-presidents: Natalie Hagman and Ali Rueschhoff; co-vice presidents: Letisha Ferris and Alex Johnson; secretary: Ruth Wiens; KAFP representative: Kurtis Klecan; Tar Wars coordinators: Michelle Baalmann and Autumn Smith; 4th-year representatives: Nate Davis and Chris Stanley; 3rd-year representatives: Cheryl Dobson, Karissa Gilchrist, Kristin Kirkland, Jordan Meyer, and Kyle Renner; 2nd-year representatives: Codi Ehrlich, Alex Holm-McDowell, Sydnee Nelson, and Ryan Woodruff. Scott Moser, M.D., announced he would be stepping down as FMIG advisor. His replacements are Kari Clouse, M.D., and Laura Mayans, M.D. Daniel Nwachokor, MS4, is the recipient of the AAFP Foundation’s James G. Jones, M.D., Student Scholarship award to attend the upcoming Family Medicine Congressional Congress in Washington, D.C., in May. Scott Stringfield, M.D., Via Christi, received the Thor Jager Award from the KUSM-W class of 2015 at the senior banquet March 28. John Dorsch, M.D., received a Spirit Award as the outstanding family medicine attending and John-Michael Watson, M.D., Wesley, received a Student Voice Award as the outstanding family medicine resident. Smoky Hill, Via Christi, and Wesley Family Medicine Residency Programs have received notification from the ACGME of re-accreditation. Andrew Wong, M.D., Via Christi FM, was inducted into the Kansas Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society on March 30. Roger Klein, M.D.; Danielle McDonald, D.O.; Aaron Sinclair, M.D.; and Carl Turner, M.D., appeared in commercials promoting screening for colorectal cancer which aired on KSN Channel 3 News March 2015. Gretchen Dickson, M.D., Danielle Hogg, M.D., and Danielle Wurtz, D.O., participated in Wesley Medical Center’s live KSN call-in show to help promote the Baby Your Baby Fair. Participants answered questions about pregnancy, children’s health, and Wesley Medical Center services, March 25. Nancy Davis, Ph.D., Scott Moser, M.D., Laura Mayans, M.D., John Dorsch, M.D., and Trisha Melhado, MPH, received a KU Medical Alumni Innovative Teaching Fund award for their project, “Improving Precision of Preceptors’ Grading of Students in Clerkships.” Laura Mayans, M.D., and Ruth Weber, M.D., Wesley, have been appointed to the editorial board of the Kansas Journal of Medicine. Debbie Bennett, department administrator for the Department of Family and Community Medicine for 17½ years, will retire at the end of April. Lori Bearley has been hired as new department administrator. Mark Stovak, M.D., was elected secretary/treasurer on the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Board of Directors.
