Dear treasured fans of the North Suburban Symphony,
Welcome to Season 25! I cannot remember a time I have been so excited to give a welcome.
The NSS is on the brink of a new era and poised to serve you as a premier community arts
ensemble. For the past 2 seasons, and even before that, the orchestra has grown in artistic ability,
audience, and membership. They are a core of dedicated and wonderful community musicians we
all can be proud of.
The ideas for this grand year of celebration were easy to envision - a look back to the
orchestra's first concert - a classic rock event for the actual party concert - collaboration with Lake
Forest High School to emphasize we are committed to young musicians - and a grand finale of very
edgy 20th century gems music with a medley of John Williams as the kicker! These plans came
together quickly as the best way to celebrate one of the North Shore's most viable, and yet to many,
unknown jewels. Your presence at these concerts is important to us. Your word of mouth
comments to friends/family about these concerts is important to us. Finally, your gifts both great and
small are crucial and necessary to us!
I know this first concert will wow you - on many levels. It is gorgeous music, easy to hear and
remember, and shows off the best of the NSS. It is no wonder it was the group’s first concert 25
years ago; it is a real audience pleaser. That is what we want to do - please you. Give us your
comments and suggestions, and please come back. The November party is planned to be a
tremendous time of fun and great music making. Tickets are available today after the concert - get
yours fast as we are sure to sell out! Wear your favorite classic rock clothes, and come ready to hear
orchestra and rock band, taste great food and drink, and partner with us financially for the best
future possible!
With great honor and joy,

Ron Arden received his musical training at Butler University in
Indianapolis, a Masters from the University of Nebraska in viola
performance, and did doctoral work at the University of Houston in voice
and viola. A “renaissance man” in the truest sense, for 25 years he has
performed, taught, and conducted as an artist of the first rank. Orchestral
viola experience includes the Omaha Symphony and Chamber
Orchestra, Lincoln Symphony, Houston Bach Society, Houston Grand
Opera, The Florida Philharmonic, and Symphony of the Americas in Ft.
Lauderdale. Vocal/acting experience includes performance as a freelance artist in Omaha, with Houston Grand Opera, and Class Act
Broadway touring company of South Florida. Ron has taught private
voice and viola in each of the cities mentioned above as well as being a
featured teacher for Elderhostel Continuing Education programs.
Presently he is on the faculty at Lake Forest College and keeps an active
studio in his home. He and his wife have toured the country for over 20
years and have three recordings from their performing duo A Cross
Between. They have two children, Nikolas and Ivan and reside in Zion, Illinois where Ron spent 5 years as
Minister of Music, Worship, and Drama at a large non-denominational church. Besides orchestrating worship
there, he was artistic director of the Zion Passion Play, Dean of the Zion Conservatory, and Music Director of
the Zion Chamber Orchestra – twice awarded by the Illinois Council of Orchestras. In 2003 Ron founded and
became music director of FullScore Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble of professional singers and
instrumentalists on Chicago’s north shore. FullScore Chamber Orchestra was the first orchestra invited to the
newly renovated Genesee Theater in Waukegan and plays there regularly for national artists. Ron is highly
sought as a musical director and works as a consultant on the arts in worship. Enjoying a wide diversity of
performing/conducting experience, Ron’s reputation for instilling excellence and artistry into musicians is his
deepest passion. From classical to Broadway, barbershop to gospel, Ron comfortably communicates the
beauty of great music.

Program Notes
The Magic Flute – Overture
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (January 27, 1756 – December 5, 1791)
Cosi Fan Tutte premiered in 1790 and was the last of Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart's collaborations with Lorenzo Da Ponte (who had fallen out of favor with Austrian Court).
Around that time Mozart’s finances started getting particularly bleak. Emanuel Schikaneder, a singer,
theater impresario and friend of Mozart, appeared with an opportunity for Mozart to write a piece
well-suited to popular tastes. Schikaneder wrote the libretto to the Magic Flute and sang the role of
Papageno.
Mozart and Schikaneder were Freemasons, and both the libretto and the music reflect
Masonic elements. Mozart worked on the piece through May and June of 1791 with a break to write
La Clemenza di Tito. He returned to the Magic Flute, finishing the score a few days before the
September 30th premiere. The Magic Flute was the composer’s last opera and perhaps signaled a
new level of maturity from Mozart. The opera was a tremendous success. Sadly, Mozart never
reaped the rewards, dying a few months later.
In the opera Mozart manages to weave the Masonic elements into fairytale –like themes and
opera buffa. The overture opens with a three chord theme that re-appears in the opera. The slow
introduction moves into a buoyant fugue in sonata-allegro form.
L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2
Georges Bizet (October 25, 1838 – June 3, 1875)
Bizet was recognized as a prodigy early, and he enrolled at the Conservatoire de Paris just
before his 10th birthday. Despite some early successes as a student and some recognition for his
piano playing, Bizet’s compositional career never really took off. After serving in the National Guard
during the Franco-Prussian War during the early 1870’s, Bizet secured a commission to write the
incidental music to the play L’Arlesienne by Alphonse Daudet. The play flopped, but the music was
so well-received that Bizet re-worked it into two suites for a premiere in November of 1872. A few
years later, Bizet premiered Carmen to a lukewarm reception and then died at age 36 in 1875.
The L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2 was published by Ernest Guiraud, four years after Bizet’s
passing, based on his themes and orchestration. This afternoon the orchestra will perform:
Movement I. Pastorale!
Movement III. Minuet!
Movement IV. Farandole
Program Notes (continued)
Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Opus 88
Antonín Dvořřák (September 8, 1841 – May 1, 1904)
Antonín Dvořřák was the eldest of nine children born to an innkeeper/butcher in what is now
the Czech Republic. His father let him pursue some musical education early, but soon put him on
track to become a butcher. After much cajoling his father ultimately let him pursue music.
By 1889 Dvořřák was well–established as an organist and composer. He was elected to the
Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts and marked the occasion with a new symphony.
The piece in G major was written over a two-and-a-half month period and premiered in Prague on
February 2, 1890. The 8th Symphony has the same Bohemian folk music influences that mark so
much of Dvořřák’s music, but this symphony is a little more cheery than the tempestuous 7th
Symphony.
The piece was generally very well-received and along with the 7th and 9th comprise some of
Dvořřák’s best known work.
