HENDRICK MEDICAL CENTER AUGUST 2014 Medical Staff Newsletter Stephen T. Faehnle, M.D. Vice President Medical Staff Changes in Rules Will Require Fluoroscopy Training for Doctors In May, 2013, The Texas Department of State Health Service Radiation Control Branch passed new regulations which will require additional training for physicians who operate fluoroscopy units for the purpose of performing fluoroscopically-guided interventional procedures. By “operate,” the rules mean perform any procedure wherein fluoroscopy is utilized, regardless of whether the physician has delegated to additional personnel the actual working of the fluoroscopy device. The hospital must certify and keep records that any and all such physicians have received eight hours of CME in radiation safety awareness and an additional hour of “hands-on” training therein. Examples of pertinent procedures include but are not limited to: TIPS creation; embolization (any location, any lesion); stroke therapy; biliary drainage; angioplasty with or without stent placement; chemo-embolization; carotid stent placement; RF cardiac ablation; any fluoroscopically guided procedure for pain control; and any urologic procedure involving fluoroscopy. According to the rules, physicians have until May 1, 2015, to complete the training. HMC has negotiated with a training firm to aid in this training. Dr. Faehnle has sign-on information for computer-based learning by individual physicians. The cost to take the training is $149 to the physician. For more information, please contact Dr. Faehnle at extension 2617. More than 900 people have died since March from an Ebola outbreak in West Africa. CDC officials say the virus poses no significant risk in the U.S., but that health care providers should be alert for patients with symptoms and recent risk factors, including travel to an area with active Ebola virus transmission.
