The Committee PRESIDENTS REPORT August 2010 My report will be a short one this month as not a lot happened, Vanning wise, in July. We are slowly chipping away at the list of things to be done for the Nats and there hasn’t been a flood of entry forms coming in. No more work has been done to the VCV Trailer, but I hope to do something towards it in August. There was the Geelong Hot Rod Show and Daz’s 50th on the 10th of July. I attended the show, mid morning, with van and VCV trailer in tow, intending to stay for the day and then spending the evening at Daz’s. However, the weather was so poor, I spent half an hour looking at the vehicles in the shed and then another half hour or so sitting in the van waiting to see if the conditions would improve. In fact, they got worse, so I ate some lunch and headed for Daz’s. After about a half hour at Daz’s I decided I would be better off returning home to catch up on those never ending chores. Of course, on the way home, the grey began to clear and I don’t think it rained again for the rest of the day. Anyway, the van got a run and I was able to test out the new rear wheel bearings and the new front universal; all worked like a charm. I will take this opportunity to remind everyone of the contact details for the 2011 Australian Van Nationals:MAIL: Van Council of Victoria, PO Box 361, Glen Waverley, Vic. 3150 PHONE: Ian Stephens (03)9873 4838 or 0403 923 277 or Marion van der Minne 0419 130 916 EMAIL: HYPERLINK "mailto:[email protected]" [email protected] Over the coming months I will also be reminding everyone of the following: VCV memberships fall due at the Van Nationals The VCV Committee elections are held at the Van Nationals The VCV AGM at the Van Nationals has an agenda and if you want to have any issues included in that agenda, then the VCV must be notified, in writing, no later than the April 2011 VCV meeting. Proposals for future Van Nationals are to be presented during the 2011 Van Nationals. However, the VCV Committee requests that it be notified of any such proposals, no later than, the April 2011 VCV meeting, so that the presentation(s) can be included at the end of the VCV AGM. As usual, I will ask you all too please remember to support the new editor of the magazine by writing articles or supplying photos of events, etc. Also, a reminder, to please pay your membership fees, as they fell due at the Nationals. Keep on Vanning, Ian., Ian. VAN COUNCIL OF VICTORIA, INC 5th August, 2010 Minutes Meeting Opened at: 8:01pm Welcome: The President welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked for the attendance book to be signed. Ian also welcomed a potential new member Hayley Martin. She has a Ford appliance white van. Attendance Record & Apologies: Attending Members signed the appearance book, apologies received from: Frits, Matt & Mandy, Tracey, Badger, Craig, Jab, balance of the Stephens clan Minutes of Previous Meeting: Not everyone had read the magazine so the secretary had the pleasure of reading the minutes (THANKS!) The minutes were once again read to a captive audience (the chains linking them to the chairs is a bonus). Moved: John R Seconded: Simon N Treasurers Report: The treasurer reported that the VCV was in good financial condition with a balance of $ 12,807.06 in the working account. Plus $196.45 in petty cash which includes the takings of $39.15 from tonite’s bbq. Accepted: James E Seconded: Daz L Editors Report: Editor was not present at the meeting. ***Please note: all articles for publishing in the magazine are required to be with the Editor NO LATER than the Wednesday after the monthly meeting. Please help us keep to a timetable so we can ensure that the magazine is published and sent on time and your fellow members are not kept waiting. Presidents Report: Refer report elsewhere (generally at the beginning) of this month’s magazine. The president read the main parts of his report only to find that everyone complained it was a short read. The president had actually left out his usual reminders, however, next time he will make sure to read them. Incoming Mail: The following letters were received since the last meeting: Rays outdoors 25% off at Nunawading Country Racing Vic – events list Commonwealth Bank EOFY term deposit notice Commonwealth Bank Account statement Calder Park Open Practice Days Plenty Valley Printing statement South Coast Cruisers Car Club – South Coast Nationals Car Bike and Truck Spectacular 28th & 29th August Flyers - Inaugural All Ford Display Day & Cruise to Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre 1 more return to sender Van Nationals entry form & info Outgoing Mail: 43 letters to potential sponsors for the Van Nationals and letters to other clubs to invite them to join us for the Sunday display. Past Events: The following events have been held since the last meeting, if you were there you know what happened if you weren’t you’ve missed it. Daz’s 50th – Daz says thank you to everyone who came and had a good time, thank you to everyone who was polite enough to RSVP even if they couldn’t make it, in particular even those who were honest enough to admit they couldn’t be bothered. All had a good time, in particular Daz who managed to consume copious amounts of Sambucca thanks to a person whose name escapes me at the time of writing these minutes. Fres came as well – a pleasant surprise. Pete Edwards from Fusion came too – he chatted with everyone, in particular Cliff who may have been able to convince him that we’re a good sort, so Peter is going to hopefully organise some sponsorship for us. Daz would also like to thank Ian for leaving early. Geelong Hot Rod Show – Ian went down to the show. The show wasn’t bad but the weather was crap. Therefore, Ian hung around for a while, ate some lunch and headed off to Daz’s 50th. It was cold and wet and windy, so Ian left early. After he had left the party, the sun came out and all was good (hence Daz thanked Ian – refer to past event above). The show was good with a good turnout, mainly indoors. The show itself raised $6,000 over the weekend. Apparently though, the Sunday is the better day to go. Motorex in Sydney – Daz debued the new style van interior. Good response, but it certainly looks different to before. He caught up with Wizard, Fres, Rusty, Steve, John, Dougie Karen & Andrew. Very good standard of vehicles. Most came trailered which made for a high quality and standard – makes it hard for those hoping to achieve the same level – there was a lot of “money” in some of the vehicles. Daz believes the show would be good for vanning if we got some vans together for a display – approx cost to show is around $70 which includes judging. Bundoora show – the one Frits advertised but didn’t go to. Cold, wet, windy, hail. Daz couldn’t fit the van into the underground carpark so had to park outside in the then hail. Good show, very good turnout. Also another worthwhile show to take the vans to. Coming Events: The following events have been identified from submitted information, flyers, etc. received by the VCV. Kirth Kiln Aug 13 – 15 South Coast Nats Aug 28/29 Same weekend as above has the AutoSalon at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Daz will be there if anyone is interested in coming along. Wasteland drive in nite at Dandenong Drive In – 18/9/10. Also Simon’s birthday the day after and Lisa A’s birthday on 16/9 and Chris’ birthday on 26 th – so make sure you bring a presi (especially for Simon – he requested it) – meet at Hog’s Breath Cafe opposite GMH. Watch out on FaceBook for meeting time. We’re not sure yet as we’ll see what daylight throws at us. Knox cruise nites start again 12/10 Vic State Titles 24/10 Benalla run – cup weekend Nov Also refer to the Calendar of Evants published elsewhere in the mag and the Vanning website. General Business (including last minute thoughts) Daz got his van back DVV has 2 new members – Peta & Dan welcomed their son Max and Sally & Jason welcomed their daughter Mia. Congratulations to you all. Murray’s HG is possibly for sale on ebay in bits and at swap meets in bits. Let him know if you see any of it. Custom Utes & Vans will be out next week – 2 nd edition. This is now a monthly magazine. Russell Slocombe now has a feature each month. James E is trying to organise a “your van” section in the back of the mag just like street machine mag has, so if you’d like to see your van in the mag, send him an email with a photo and a brief description and he’ll keep working on it. James’ email is [email protected]. Let’s see if we can get a few in and make it a regular feature. We will also try to get CUV to the State Titles for a photo shoot. (BTW the mag will be renamed Custom Vans & Utes – they just don’t know it yet LOL) Murray S and John R are jobless bums. Ma Shit says hi to everyone Ozzie says hi to everyone Mandy P does not talk with a funny accent – she wasn’t there for long enough If you’re awaiting the entry form and advice sheet or you know of someone who is and you or they haven’t received it, it may just be that we don’t have the correct contacts details. Also, if you know of anyone that would like to sponsor, let us know, drop us a line at [email protected] and we’ll make sure the info is sent out. 2011 Australian Van Nationals Update: The committee decided that the original artwork that was shown at the original selection presentation was a little too “square”. We therefore redid the artwork and it is now a map of Australia with the same vehicles and flag details. Ian however, would still like to see one more version of a flying flag with the details.... so yours truly will once again hit the keyboard and develop something. We’ll show it at the next meeting. Meeting closed at: 9:17pm Next Meeting: Thursday 2nd September, 2010 8pm sharp, Hot Rod Rooms Oakleigh Look whos 21 Sam Alexander turned 21 while she was in America so we had to wait until last weekend to celebrate with her. Well it was a good night wit quite a few family and vanner friends to help her celebrate. Pity the pussys were just that against Collingwood but that didn’t put to much of a dampener on the festivities. Congratulations same on become a grown up vanner Here are a few photos of the night Primer to Pristine Car Show We were up at sparrow fart on the 4th July to head out to the Ipswich Turf Club at Bundamba for the sixth annual “Primer to Pristine” Car Show, hosted by the Ipswich Classic Car Club. It was close to freezing at day break as we wheeled in to set up our Esky Van. But as the day progressed the sun gave us a beautiful day, with over 200 vehicles gracing the magnificent grounds of the Turf Club. There was a terrific amount of trade stalls including the Shannon’s promo truck, and the local Lions Club were serving up some excellent tucker. Even “Fletch” was on site to do some TV footage for his “Classic Resto’s” show. The show was right next to the local railway line to the Turf Club, so the Council had organised for a steam train to run into Ipswich and back for those interested in going into the city. There were plenty of great cars on show, but only a couple of Vans. We were impressed with the steady flow of public wandering through the gates to view the great variety of machines on site, including an excellent speedway vehicles display, and even the old taxis were great to check out. Top Car of Show and $2000 was awarded to a magic 1955 Silver Chev Belair Coupe. We did well with the Escort taking out Best Commercial. No trophy but a nice $500 cheque. Proceeds from the day going to help out the Ipswich Hospital which was great, and Well done to the Ipswich Classic Car Club for putting on a top day. Cheers Russell Logan PCYC Show It’s always great to get out and support the community events that are happening out there. The Logan Police and Citizens Youth Club is one of those groups doing good work and on the 11th of July they held their annual Cars, Bikes, Rides & Rigs Show behind the Logan entertainment Centre. The day started out a bit dodgy weather wise and stayed overcast for most of the day. It was a credit to the PCYC crew who had organized plenty of activities for all ages. There was plenty of trade stalls for the big kids, a carnival for the small kids and Police and emergency service displays to check out. There was even a couple of “Don’t Mess With Me” armoured troop carriers on display from the local Army barracks. Various bands played some great rock ‘n’ roll music all day and the Shannon’s people were supporting the event with their information semi trailer on site. As the show’s name suggests there was a bit of everything to check out. From the magic green “Joker” Chopper bike to the display of vintage trucks and caravans. Even Vans were in good numbers as well as heaps of other great looking machines. Presentations got underway about 2-ish, with special thanks to Kingston Park Go Kart Raceway, Rent A Fence and Quest Newspapers for coming onboard as the main sponsors and thanks to the Eliminators Car Club for their help during the day. Close to 300 vehicles graced the grounds for the estimated 7000 people who came to view the show. Top Machine of show went to a little V8 Supercharged Van. “Yes that’s right” Your roving President and first ladies Pano took the top gong including Top Interior. We were stoked at the win and enjoy getting the Vans out there. John the fruiterer won a very nice fruit box in the raffle, with thanks to John, Jim and Ron for rocking up to make a respectable 5 Van Sunstate display. The day concluded as it started with fine misty rain falling as we packed up but we’d had a great day with close to $15.000 in much needed funds raised to help the PCYC continue their good work. Cheers Russell Kirth Kiln (located approx. 9km from Gembrook. ) Date: 13th – 15th August, 2010 How to get there: Make your way to Gembrook. Then head to Launching Place on the C424 and stay on this road. Take note of your speedo so you can measure 9km. You will go past the Gilwell Scout Camp, with buildings both to the left and right of the main road. You will then pass the Alkira Cottages on the right hand side. Keep going along this road. There are many sharp corners on this road so heed the recommended speed limits. At approx. 9km mark, you will come to an intersection of Soldiers Rd. At this intersection on the left hand side is a water tanker filling pipe. Turn left here. Keep going straight ahead, it’s dirt with a few pot holes but not too bad in the dry. Can be slippery in the wet, so be warned. As you come round a bend further down the track, ignore the camping sign veering to the left and keep going straight. You will come down a hill and notice a large pond on your right, to the left is what’s left of the original Kirth Kiln and shortly thereafter is a turn off into a carpark to the left. Turn here and you’re there. There are two drop toilets (one female and one male). There are brick fireplaces and picnic tables. The carparks are roped off but flat so sleeping in the vans won’t be a problem. You can pitch a tent as well, though you may sleep on a slight angle. There’s fishing in the large pond and lots of walking tracks if we get bored. BYO water, chairs etc etc. If you realise you’ve forgotten something, Gembrook shops are open on the Saturday, there’s a bakery, Indian restaurant, IGA supermarket, Pizza place, Lolly shop, Newsagent, some collectibles shops as well. Gembrook also has a large pub, so Saturday nite’s meal can be there or at camp. We hope you can make it for the 2nd Kirth Kiln run. If we still like it, and it’s unanimous, we’ll go back.
