The Armistice Clearing The imperial palace in Compiegne was one of the favorite royal residencies. It was rebuilt in the 18th century by Louis V on the site of the castle of Charles V. Restored under Napoleon Bonaparte, it was the scene to many lavish receptions called "les series de Compiegne" these were week long gatherings for prestigious guests during the Second Empire (Napoleon lll). The palace grounds were designed by Jacques-Ange Gabriel. Today it houses several museums: "les Grands appartements", the Automobile Museum... The oldest part of this church dates from the 13th century, it has had a turbulent past. It now has two harmonized styles ; the end of the Gothic period and the Renaissance. Greek inspiration contributes to it’s originality. Some of the stained glass windows by L’Abbé Deligny are quite original for the period (1860). 4 SaintePérine lake Railway station The fairy-tale medievieval castle that was entirely rebuilt by the architect Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century on the request of Napoleon lll.
