How is everyone?
I hope everyone made it through all the snow storms,
thunderstorms and tornado threats. I have to admit I was
a little nervous when they said it was headed straight to
Callaway; I was relieved when it was all over and Keith
got home from Pensacola Florida safe and sound.
Well let’s see what took place this month:
Had a great turn out at the chapter gathering with a few
other chapters visiting us. We were able to decide on our fundraising event for
our pancake breakfast that’s coming up in about 2 months. PLEASE DON’T
FORGET THAT WE NEED DONATIONS AND SPONSORS. Also, we need
items to auction off and can goods for the soup kitchens. As Keith mentioned in
his email, we are asking for everyone coming to the gathering, a chapter social
event, etc. to bring a Non-Perishable item. I’m hoping this will be our biggest
fundraising event ever. Remember it is what you choose to put into our chapter
that makes it what it is.
I want to thank Roger and Rose Tenbrink for opening up their beautiful new home
up for our coffee social, it turned out rather nicely with a houseful of friends and
family and of course delicious food. So thank you again Roger and Rose for your
hospitality I think it is safe to say we all enjoyed ourselves.
Next we move on to our dinner social at Zee Best Cafe, thanks to Cheryl
Hartman’s suggestion; we also had a great turnout there. I believe everyone
enjoyed their selves and the food. I know the crab cakes that I had were very good
and made with just crab and no breading. So if you didn’t have a chance to go
that night I suggest you give it a try.
I hope everyone had a beautiful Valentine’s Day, I know I sure did. I was able to
be with Keith, my husband and best friend. We had dinner here at our home in
which Keith made the most delicious ribeye steaks that melted in your mouth with
baked potato and corn on the cob. It was so good.
Our next stop would be Chapter H for their Spaghetti Bingo; as usual,
AWESOME! Thank you Chapter H for all your hard work and great turn out. We
had the largest chapter there and was rewarded with 2 marble sheet cakes that
were passed around for everyone to share. We had a couple of winners from our
chapter, Leslie Hubbell won $30.00 then Ray Bond won $30.00 plus the grand
prize which included next year’s entry fee and two books of cards to play, Julie
A`Hearn won $30.00. All in all a good night for Chapter I.

As for what is coming up next month: March 5th The Riverside Dinner Theater, The Buddy Holly Story. I know a lot
of us have been looking forward to this for some time. I believe we have 22 or more members going. This will be Keith
and I’s 5th time at the theater. We’ve enjoyed ourselves each time and do not see us quitting anytime soon. Don’t forget
after our chapter meeting March 6th we have a ride to be determined if weather is permitting. So if there is a place that
someone has been interested in riding to let us know so we can all ride to it.
Next brings us to Ray and Cheryl Hartman’s Coffee social, March 12th @ 6:00, which I hope we will have another big
turnout too. Cheryl has asked that we all bring something made from Pinterest along with a copy of the recipe. She will
also have tables set up with different games for people to be able to play. Sounds like a really fun night and interesting
food to try, I’m sure she will provide additional info at the gathering.
Don’t forget to sign up for the Bowl-A-Thon on March 20th. I know Keith and I will be heading up to visit Chapter J’s
breakfast at Bob Evans before we go over to the bowl-a-thon I hope we will have others come with us as well, time and
meeting place to follow at the gathering.
Last but not least our dinner social March 22nd at Outback here in California. Please contact me if you are interested in
joining us, I need to let them know well in advance as I’m expecting we will be taking up a good portion of the place.
It will be a night filled with laughter and tons of birthday wishes, not to mention good food. Hope to see you all
there. Please give me a call!
Hopefully we will start having beautiful riding weather and camping weather and able to enjoy being outside again
soon. I just need for this weather to decide what it’s going to do!
Take care and stay safe…..

Assistant Chapter Directors / Ride Coordinators
Hello all –
WOW, here it is the beginning of March. The weather is already turning to riding weather. Rose and
I can’t wait to get on the bike, even if it’s just a trip to work.
February was a busy month, with Spaghetti Bingo, the RV show and dinner/coffee socials. Even with
all the snow, we were out and about as a group having fun.
As discussed at the gathering, we voted to support the local food banks/kitchens to provide for the
needs of our communities. When thinking about this, Rose and I thought that maybe a better way to collect for this
need was at every gathering/meeting. If you could bring some non-perishable items throughout the year, we would be
able to collect quite the stockpile for the kitchen. We will need to make sure that we are watching our expiration dates
because the kitchen/bank will not accept expired food. At the end of the year, we will make a big production of taking
the food to the kitchen by delivering on motorcycles and with trucks. People will definitely know that Chapter I has a
big heart and cares for their communities. I hope you will join us in making a difference.

March is another busy month with the trip to the dinner theatre to see The Buddy Holly Story on Saturday, the 5 th of
March. The following weekend Ray and Cheryl Hartman have invited us to their home for a dinner social. Make sure
you let them know you are coming for planning purposes. I know Cheryl has put a lot of effort into making this a great
evening. The last weekend of the month is Easter so I know we all will be planning to be with family. Where you can,
if you know someone who will be alone, think about inviting them to join you. It’s a great way to make a new friend
and bring a little joy to someone else.
If the weather stays warm, let’s see if we can’t squeeze in a pick-up ride or two. I’ll be watching the weather to see if
a weekend will step up to be a great time for a ride. Our first planned ride of the season is after the March gathering. No
planned destination but we will leave the gathering, probably led by Keith and then change leaders every 15 minutes.
Let's see where we end up. Should be fun.
Please, if you get a chance to get out on the bike, be safe! Remember, the recent snows make the roads a little more
dangerous at the beginning of the season.
Have a great month! And we will see you soon…

Membership Enhancement Coordinators
Welcome to the March 2016 edition of our Chapter newsletter.
Last month, we introduced ourselves as your new Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinators
(MECs).
Next time you pull out your wallet or purse, check out the expiration dates on your GWRRA
Membership Cards. Time has a habit of just flying by, and before you know it, one or two years have
passed, and it’s time to renew.
Congratulations to Jan McNulty whom renewed her membership for two years, Ray & Rene Lee for their renewal of
their family membership and Leslie Hubbell whom renewed her associate membership.
This month’s FUN activities in the Chapter include the following;
- The “Buddy Holly Story” at the Riverside Dinner Theater in Virginia on Saturday the 5th.
- Our Gathering on Sunday the 6th.
- Coffee Social at Ray & Cheryl Hartman’s home on Saturday the 12th.
- Visit to MD-J Gathering and then to the MD District Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday the 20th.
- Dinner Social on Tuesday the 22nd…location TBD.
Last month we traveled to the Mt Ararat Masonic Lodge in Bel Air MD to visit MD-H for their annual Spaghetti Dinner
& Bingo. Our chapter was recognized as the largest MD District Chapter in attendance and we were awarded with a
large cake as the prize. As the night progressed, our chapter fared well on the winnings. It was a FUN night and
everyone enjoyed dinner and bingo with all our friends and family!

Chapter Rider/Educators
I read somewhere recently that 99% of the crashes most riders get involved in are avoidable. While
that may seem a little hard to believe, it just may be true. Let's look at the most common motorcycle
crash which of course, occurs when another vehicle violates your right of way. This usually happens
as you approach an intersection and a vehicle turns left in front of you. It also occurs when a vehicle
pulls out from a side road into your path, but let's look at the left turning vehicle first and how to
avoid the crash since your actions should be pretty much the same for both scenarios.
Here are the best ways to avoid a crash in these situations. First, look at least 12 seconds ahead of
your motorcycle. Your eyes should be scanning from left to right and up and down. The sooner you see the potential
hazard, the more time you'll have to react. Second, since most crashes happen in an intersection, slow down when
approaching one. Cover both your front and rear brakes as you get closer to the intersection. Position your bike to the
left side of your lane. If you're going to have to swerve around the left turning vehicle, your swerve will usually be to
the left around the back of the vehicle and then quickly back to the right. However, most of the time in that situation,
your only course of action will be to stop quickly using both your front and rear brakes. That's why it is so important to
practice emergency braking using both brakes. The average rider never does practice braking, consequently, in that
situation, the average rider slams on the rear brake, locks the tire and skids right into the vehicle. Even if he misses the
vehicle, he still slides onto the ground. Either way, he crashes for no reason.
By looking way ahead of your motorcycle, you'll be able to anticipate the actions of that vehicle and be able to apply
your brakes long before it becomes an emergency. If you spend just a few minutes a week practicing emergency braking,
you will lessen the chances of locking the rear wheel dramatically.
The second most common motorcycle crash involves only the motorcycle and its called failure to negotiate a turn. What
usually happens is the rider gets into a turn and suddenly believes he's going too fast to make it around the curve. Maybe
the rider hears the pegs start to scrape. Since he's not familiar with that sound, he panics, straightens up the bike, then
looks at the yellow line in the road, the guard rail, or even the oncoming vehicle and a crash occurs. In over 600 cases
of failure to negotiate a curve studied, in every case the bike was capable of making the turn at the speed the rider was
going, the rider was not.
So, how do you avoid this crash? It's simple. Learn to use head and eyes properly. When rounding a curve to the left,
position your bike to the right side of the lane and focus on the end of the turn and nowhere else. Never, never, look at
the yellow line, the guard rail, or the oncoming car. If the road curves to the right, position your bike to the left side of
the lane as you enter the curve.
In addition, find your bikes' limits in a parking lot at 5mph where the worst that could happen is a simple tip-over. The
bottom line, practice makes perfect. Learn to use your head and eyes properly. It is the key to safe riding. Learn to use
both your front and rear brakes and keep them from locking so you very well may be able to avoid 99% of the crashes
you're likely to be involved in. At the very least, you will minimize injuries to yourself and damage to your bike. Don't
be an average rider who depends on dumb luck. Instead, practice and Ride Like a PRO. With that said, if you are
interested in taking the Ride Like A Pro course, please contact me soon. I am putting together a course for our
group in April or May. We need at least 10 - 12 riders and will be first come first serve.
