We finished the term with outstanding performances by many of our pupils.
The Christmas production in the Centro Congresso do Arade was attended by over 1200 family
and friends.
Changes at school
Our traditional Carol Service in Silves Church was also a highlight in the last week of school. Your
support during this busy time of year is much appreciated.
We are all looking forward to a busy and productive second term. Exam season has already
begun for many of our senior students and we wish them well in attaining their best results.

Upcoming Events
Changes at school
Management took advantage of the summer holidays to
improve various areas throughout the school.
At the Lagoa site the preschool area saw new rubber paving and fencing. Trees were removed from the
play area and all the spaces were repainted and equipment rearranged to guarantee improve conditions
and safety for our little ones.
The play area was covered with rubber tiles, grass was laid down on the football field and sports change
rooms were also modified. A organic garden was created as a project to permit students to be more in
touch with nature.
The infirmary was remodelled and two meeting rooms created for meetings with parents. The teachers
were given a new staffroom with ample space and excellent working conditions. In addition, a new
volleyball field and two more basketball courts were added in the centre of the skate rink and students
hall.
At the Espiche site there was also many changes to enhance conditions and the students well-being. New
pavement at the entrance, painting of the buildings. The IT room is now next to the library which makes it
easier to manage equipment. Offices were created to help improve the organization and attending to the
public making the school more efficient.

Nobel Education Network Summit
The heads of NOBEL Education Network meet twice a year in
a summit which took place, this time, in the NOBEL
International School Algarve. Students presented the
participants with two original songs, one in Portuguese and
the other in English, performed by year 11 and year 6
students from the national section. All school pupils were
present in the basketball court.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award
The year 10 pupils of the International section are being given the
opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. They will
start at the Bronze level and then have the chance to take part in
the Silver and Gold sections as they progress through the school.
The Award is an internationally recognised qualification that does
wonders enhancing pupils´ chances in the job market and for
university applications.
It is split into four sections: Skill, Sport, Service and Expedition. The
Skills and Sports section give the participants a chance to
demonstrate the ability to show commitment and development in
activities ranging from martial arts to painting. The Service section
is about helping out in the community on a regular basis and the
Expedition section will equip the participants with the skills to
navigate and look after themselves in wilderness environments.
One day in pre-historic times
NOBEL International School students
visited Alcalar’s archaeological site
where the remains of a pre-historic
community, date back 5000 years
ago.
According to the local guides, a
megalithic funerary monument was
built in a village and students could
see how utensils and tools were
made in a day-to-day farming
community.
On the same trip, students had the
opportunity to visit the Museum of

Portimão, where they could see how
a fish cannery works and
understood the importance of
fishing to the local economy.

Organic Garden
9º Ano, 11º Ano Biology and Geology students students
planted Vicia faba (broad beans) and Pisum sativum (peas)
on the school’s recently created garden.
By allocating a plot of land to each class, the school is
teaching and providing students to grow their own food.
All classes will be involved in this innovative project.
Halloween Mask Contest
The
Nobel
International
School of the Algarve held a
Halloween Mask Contest
where students were asked
to make their own Halloween
masks. This contest had two
main purposes. On the one
hand, to strengthen family
relationships and on the
other hand, to celebrate a
British tradition that has been
increasing in our country.
Our
students
created
fantastic masks that were
exposed in the school’s
library.
The Halloween Mask Contest
winners were the following
students: Diogo Silva in 1º
Ano (National Section); Myah
Rennie in Year 3; Ricardo
Ribeiro in 6º Ano (National
Section);
and,
Vladyslav
Lyubarov in 8º Ano (National
Section).

Spootacular Science
Nobel International School Algarve’s Science Department held an event
called “The Spootacular Science” which was designed for older
students (+ 10 years old). This Science project was directly linked to
Halloween experiments. Teachers began with a theatrical performance
to introduce every experiment where students could also “enjoy”
frightening music. Our students were very fond of the six creepy
experiments that they took part in.

World AIDS Day
The school infirmary and Year 12 Biology students arranged and
coordinated an all-day event to celebrate World AIDS Day. The
school nurse and students hoped to create awareness and
encourage the prevention of the disease.
Information leaflets were handed out to students explaining
precautionary measures that should be taken. The group also
conducted a workshop which covered a range of topics including
family planning to make students aware of the problems caused
by the virus. Free hugs were also on offer throughout the day.
The highlight of the day was gathering fellow students to stand
together, forming the shape of the famous red ribbon which has
become the international symbol for AIDS awareness throughout
the world.
A great initiative and a big congratulations to all involved.
Diwali Indian Festival in Espiche
To celebrate the “Diwali”, which this year falls on 11th
November, the children have created “Rangoli”. Diwali is
an Indian festival of lights. It is one of the most important
festivals for Hindus. The tradition is to draw Rangoli
patterns on the floor, using coloured sand, rice and flowers
for decoration, and it is thought to bring good luck. The
houses are cleaned and decorated so that Lakshmi, the
Goddess of wealth and good fortune feels welcome in
homes.
Trip to Campo Maior
5º ,6º and 7º Ano national
section
students
(History,
Geography
and
Visual
Technology Education) traveled
to Campo Maior to visit the
Delta Café factory.
Students observed how coffee
is produced as well as the
distribution process, which has
an important role in national
and world History. They
witnessed testimonials of how
the industry has changed many
lives in Portugal and Spain.
Students were taught to

distinguish different coffee
blends whilst within another
section of the factory they
observed the entire process
from import to the marketing
of the coffee.
The trip has helped students to
understand the importance of
this industry, its geographical
location and history.

Healthy food
6º Ano students made fruit kebabs to understand how
important healthy food is.
They also learned which nourishing habits are correct or
incorrect.
Food is made of nutrients, important elements to keep a
healthy life. It is where our body gets what it needs.
Food has an important role in a healthy growth. For good
nourishment the basics of the Food Wheel must be followed
and a right choice of food should be made.
Travel and Tourism Students visit Martinhal
Year 12 and 13 Travel and Tourism students
visited Martinhal Beach Resort and Hotel near
Sagres.
Students were able to make connections
between the theory they have been learning in
class and the actual operations of a five star
luxury family resort.
They visited various back of the house
departments, met with department heads and
received a truly engaging tour of the resort. The
group were received in true Martinhal
hospitality style and in addition, were treated to
lunch at the exclusive beach front Dunas
Restaurant where they met with the executive
owners of Martinhal who provided the students
with valuable information they can use in
exams.
We are truly grateful for the wonderful
opportunity the Martinhal staff provided for our
students.
NOBEL Algarve global Weather Station Project
The Science Department of NISA aims to deliver funny and creative cross
curricular activities that engage pupils in the world around them and have
real impact in everyone’s life. We also aim to collaborate with other
schools around the world.
This project will promote opportunities to discuss weather patterns
meteorology and climate.
The weather station project
The Raspberry Pi Foundation invited 1000 schools around the world to
participate in this exciting weather station project.
The Science Department of NISA registered interest in participating in this
worldwide project and applied together with schools across the globe.
Located in the Algarve, NOBEL International School Algarve was
successfully chosen based on its physical location, so that the network
has the widest and best possible and geographical spread.

Non-Uniform day
The Senior students from both sections of the school
are organising a charity fund-raising Non-Uniform
Day for all students for Friday, 23rd October.
For the privilege of not wearing school uniform for
the day, students will each pay €2.00. The money will
be collected at morning registration by Class
Teachers and Year Tutors.
Students may also wear
accessories if they wish.
Halloween
themed
St. Martin’s Day
Teachers Ana Ribeiro, Ana Lucia Santos and
Pedro Lopes guided Year 2, Year 7 and Year
8 students to make puppets to present the
St. Martin’s legend to their pre-school and
primary class mates.
The presentation ended with a song
alluding to the St. Martin’s story. Puppets
and props will be part of an exhibition to
be held in the school library.
Landscape and leisure
Discovering new talents…
An exciting collection of more than 25 pieces of art will be on display at the
Vale do Lobo Art Gallery during this sixth exhibition of its kind by pupils
from the Nobel International School Algarve. Students have embraced a
variety of different art and Leisure and their pieces display a refreshing
outlook on modern art from budding young talents.
The Portuguese students produced a large 3D book with more than 40
students contributing to its construction out of card and involved in bringing
the pages to life using acrylic paints and collage techniques.
The English students from the school focused on connecting the theme with
artists’ work from the past and present day drawing on influences
including Henry Moore and photographer John Paul Brooke. Other
supporting work on show looks at the theme under the influence of the
Cubist movement in style and technique, while students from year 10 have
produced a series of sensitive black.

GNR – visits Nobel Algarve
GNR – (Portuguese National Republican Guard) visited the NOBEL International School Algarve to present to students and teachers their
departments and equipment.
The departments present were: Cavalry Squadron, Canine Division, Explosives Inactivation and Safety in Underground, Traffic Police, Special
Programmes and the Safety School Programme.
Students had the opportunity to interact with the guards and to attend a presentation of the Canine Division demonstrating the dogs’ high
level of training and obedience performing military and police functions. It was also possible to ride horses, watch the police cars technical
equipment and understand the features of the siren and other devices.
The Explosives Inactivation and Safety in Underground team explained how to act in accidents and disasters, or in case of fire, protecting
people and their property. This event helped students to better understand how the National Republican Guard operates.

Christmas Carol Concert
On Tuesday the 15th of December Nobel
International School Algarve once again filled the
Silves Cathedral with the sweet voices of students
from both primary sections for their annual
Christmas Carol Concert. The Cathedral registered as
a national monument of Portugal is the perfect
setting for the concert.
A great performance was enjoyed by all who
attended. Thank you to music teachers Bruno
Rodrigues, Marlene Robalo and their students who
have been hard at work all term preparing for the
evening, even practising during lunch times and in
between practice sessions for this past weekend’s
Christmas production.

3rd prize in the “DepArte” competition
A big congratulations to Nobel Algarve visual arts
student Isabella Brenchley-Wood in 12º Ano
(national section) for receiving the 3rd prize in the
DepArte competition titled “Saude a 4 tempos”
which has been promoted by the Centro de Ciencia
Viva in Lagos.
We invite the school community to visit the
exhibition which is currently on display.

Christmas Musical Concert
Children in years 4, 5 and 6 were treated to a
Christmas concert by their fellow students
who demonstrated their instrumental and
vocal talents in a festive concert enjoyed by
all. Solo performances where given by Julien
de France, Mariana Martins, Rafael de Silva
and Auriane Nagel each performing intricate
classical and Spanish pieces.
Marley and Riven Harris played their first
public performance together as did Emma
Howson and Philippine Caileux, well done to
them! This was followed with songs by current
artists such as Adele and The Neighbourhood,
performed by Deborah de Jesus Amado,
Carlota Apolonia vocals / guitar and Sofia
Dunn -Bass. The concert finished with a
selection of well-loved Christmas songs,
Monty Allen, Johanna Hartl, Tilly Weigh,

Emma Howson and Philippine Caileux got the
party started with “Rudolph the red nosed
reindeer”, Pippa Campbell and Riana Kanabar
joined in on guitar for “Silent night” and a
soulful rendition of ” All I want for Christmas is
you”. The concert ended with a roof raising
version of “Happy Christmas – war is over –
John Lennon”.

Nobel Algarve Annual Christmas Production
Nobel International School Algarve took to
the stage at the Centro Congressos Arade in
Ferragudo once again this Saturday the
12th. This is the second time the school has
used the location with this year’s
production titled “The Discovery of Me”.
The production is in line with the school’s
world topic Discovery, which has been
officially recognised as the school’s
(Projecto Educativo de Escola) School
Educational Project by the Portuguese
Ministry of Education.
The crowds were treated to an art
exhibition in the entrance halls of the
venue where students and teachers from
the art departments displayed recent
artwork and the language department
displayed their “Walls of the World” project
and Christmas cards in different languages.
The production was put on by a total of 430
students and 60 teachers/staff that have
been hard at work over the last couple of
months putting together the incredible
performance, setting the bar high for all
future productions.
The event started with the presentation of
medals recognising student achievements
in various sporting events during the first
term. The crowd of approximately 1000
then enjoyed the two and half hour show
where students from both sections put on a
great production of singing, dancing and
acting. The show finished with the entire
cast singing a group rendition of the 1985
charity song “We are the World”.
A big congratulations and thank you to all
staff and students for putting on a great
show and parents and friends for their
support!
