A History of Castle Howard
in Twelve Objects
Building on the success of the
BBC Radio 4 series A History
of the World in 100 Objects,
Castle Howard is offering its own
variation on this inspirational
theme. For one evening you will
be introduced to the twelve objects
that best represent the entire story
of Castle Howard. What do you
think these might be?
Speaking Portraits
Painted in flamboyant dress or
captured in a reflective pose,
often by major artists of the day,
who are all these people that
stare down at you from the walls
of Castle Howard? Drawing on
a range of fascinating documents
from the archives this evening will
allow these figures to speak for
themselves, revealing their life
and times.
See website for further details where there are also
video clips of the curator introducing these events.

The Stories
A Surprise at Every Turn
Castle Howard may be a Treasure
House, but it is also a ‘Story House’
par excellence. The Howard family
led exciting lives and remarkably
they wrote everything down,
leaving behind one of the most
comprehensive family archives
in the world containing countless
stories.
Castle Howard was built by a playwright, is it little
wonder then that a walk through the Castle Howard
landscape is full of dramatic surprises? Our walking
route lets you step back in time to the early 18th
century when the grounds were first fashioned, and
on to later eras when these features were changed or
restored. These tours offer exclusive access to buildings
not normally open to the public.
We are continually exploring this
rich history and always discovering
new things. So relax with a glass
of wine and canapés as we reveal
these tales, some of them for the
first time. Then join us to view
and handle some of these objects
and documents, many of them
previously unseen by the public.
