For
two
years
Wayne
TownshipHuber
Heights Historical Society
has been working hard to
raise funds to restore the
many broken headstones in
the Shearer Cemetery.
Shearer Cemetery is located on the south side of
Fishburg Road just west of
Brandt Pike. It dates back
to 1813 and as recent as
1996. Over the years many
of the headstones have
been broken due to vandalism and natural causes,
such as tree roots, ground
settling and weather. The
society contracted with
Stonehugger Cemetery
Restoration out of Indiana
to do the restoration, the
approximate cost of the
entire project would be
$30,000. and could be done
in $5,000. increments. On
May 15, 2015 Stonehugger
began the first phase of the
project restoring 14 Tablet
headstones, 3 small monuments and 2 Slant stones.
During that time, they unearthed 1 headstone that no
one knew was there and
another very unusual stone
that was buried. It is very
exciting to see how beautiful these headstones are
once they have been
cleaned and put together to
be whole again and give
beauty and pay tribute to
those buried in the cemetery. This is just the beginning, we will continue to
work to raise the funds
needed to complete this
project and hope that they
will be honored for years to
come. We are on
Stonehuggers schedule for
2016. A portion of the proceeds from all events in
2015 will go toward this
project. While learning the
names of those buried in
Shearer Cemetery, we have
been researching and learning about those resting
there along with their families and the roles they
played in our history. This
information is published in
articles in the Huber
Heights Courier. Below
are before and after photos
of some of the headstones
that have been restored. If
have information about
those in the cemetery or
would like to learn more
about how to support this
cause, contact us at

Wayne Township-Huber
Heights Historical Society
celebrated its 10th anniversary
with an old fashion school
lunch served in the auditorium at Studebaker School on
Saturday, April 18. Our
guests included many current
and former residents of
Wayne Township and Huber
Heights and society members
who enjoyed hearing the history and stories of our
schools. Judy Holt, retired
teacher and lifetime resident
of the City gave the history
from 1795 to the present. Pat
Stephens presented the
speech her grandmother gave
in 1920, as her grandmother,
Mrs. Charles E. Haywood.
Mrs. Haywood spoke to the
Ohio School Board on how
the Farm Women’s Association of Wayne Township
formed and worked to keep
only in academics but socially and physically. It seemed
only fitting that David Studebaker was one of the
speakers for the evening.
their charter to be a centralized
School. David Studebaker
reminisced about his time at
Wayne Central School (now
Titus) and told stories about his
former teachers and events
during those years. David also
spoke of his father, Robert Studebaker for which Studebaker
School was named and how
much the schools meant to him.
Robert Studebaker served on
the Board of Education in our
community for 20 years and
made sure the children had the
best possible education, not
Dinner for this school history
event included: hot dogs,
sloppy joes, Johnny Marzetti, salad, baked beans and
pudding for desert. Lunch
was served on school lunch
trays and everyone went
through the lunch line as
they did while they were in
school.
The podium that was used by
the speakers was obtained by
the Society at the Titus
School auction when the
school was closed.

joyed the speakers, lunch and
viewing the interesting and
pictorial history of the schools
with photos dating back to the
Banks School of 1809. This
was the first of what we plan
to be many events held at Studebaker School. Members of
the Wayne Township-Huber
Heights Historical Society
were excited to show off their
new location in the lower level
of Studebaker School where
guests browsed more photos
and memorabilia. Guests were
pleased to see the amount of
space and memorabilia the
society now has to display and
preserve all the items the society has accumulated.

ROSE MUSIC CENTER @ THE
HEIGHTS
On Sunday, May 3, 2015 the City of Huber Heights held a ribbon cutting celebration for the new Stuart & Mimi Rose Music Center at The Heights. The collaboration with the Rose Family Foundation
created a long-lasting link between the
Rose foundation and the City of Huber
Heights. “This is one of the greatest initiatives that has occurred in the Dayton area, and it will serve as another attraction
that will make our region great,” said Stuart Rose, a representative of the foundation, a private family-based organization.

become the premier entertainment destination in the area. “The Music Center is a
testament to the greatness of the people
who put their minds together to deliver
something truly positive,” Rose said.
The music center is located at 6800 Executive Boulevard, and held its first concert
on Saturday May 2 with
NEEDTOBREATHE being the first to

that we have been looking
for. We now have more
space for storage, documenting and working, displays can be left for an extended time, we have access

completely handicap accessibility. We have been fortunate to have had two nice
places in the past, but none

Knowlton for allowing us
the use of a space in the Huber Centre and to the Huber
Heights Chamber of Commerce and the City of Huber
Heights for the time at the
Geiger House in Cloud Park.
We have a little work ahead
of us to get things set up and
then we will offer regular
hours and additional programs. We are excited to
start the process of sorting,
organizing and displaying all
the great documents, photos
and artifacts we have gathered
over the past few years.
We’ve had a little work to do
that includes painting, replacing cabinet counter tops, setting up shelving and just good
ole cleaning, this should all be
completed within the next
month. As soon as we have
everything in place, we'll send
out notices to all.
