Shearer Cemetery is located on the south side of Fishburg Road just west of Brandt Pike. It dates back to 1813 and as recent as 1996. Over the years many of the headstones have been broken due to vandalism and natural causes, such as tree roots, ground settling and weather. The society contracted with Stonehugger Cemetery Restoration out of Indiana to do the restoration, the approximate cost of the entire project would be $30,000. and could be done in $5,000. increments. On May 15, 2015 Stonehugger began the first phase of the project restoring 14 Tablet headstones, 3 small monuments and 2 Slant stones. During that time, they unearthed 1 headstone that no one knew was there and another very unusual stone that was buried. It is very exciting to see how beautiful these headstones are once they have been cleaned and put together to be whole again and give beauty and pay tribute to those buried in the cemetery. This is just the beginning, we will continue to work to raise the funds needed to complete this project and hope that they will be honored for years to come. We are on Stonehuggers schedule for 2016. A portion of the proceeds from all events in 2015 will go toward this project. While learning the names of those buried in Shearer Cemetery, we have been researching and learning about those resting there along with their families and the roles they played in our history. This information is published in articles in the Huber Heights Courier. Below are before and after photos of some of the headstones that have been restored. If have information about those in the cemetery or would like to learn more about how to support this cause, contact us at [email protected] 3 Memorial Day 3 Society Update 3 Contact info and sales 4 Elizabeth Criswell Charles & Elizabeth Sheets and 2 children died from Cholera within 3 days of each Rosie age 1 and Benniah age 1 day, children of Henry Shoup Pa ge 2 A n n u a l M e e t i n g “ H i s t o r y o f W a y n e T o w n s h i p H u b e r H e i g h t s Wayne Township-Huber Heights Historical Society celebrated its 10th anniversary with an old fashion school lunch served in the auditorium at Studebaker School on Saturday, April 18. Pat Stephens presented the speech her grandmother gave in 1920, as her grandmother, Mrs. Charles E. Haywood. Mrs. Haywood spoke to the Ohio School Board on how the Farm Women’s Association of Wayne Township formed and worked to keep only in academics but socially and physically. It seemed only fitting that David Studebaker was one of the speakers for the evening. their charter to be a centralized School. David Studebaker reminisced about his time at Wayne Central School (now Titus) and told stories about his former teachers and events during those years. David also spoke of his father, Robert Studebaker for which Studebaker School was named and how much the schools meant to him. Robert Studebaker served on the Board of Education in our community for 20 years and made sure the children had the best possible education, not Dinner for this school history event included: hot dogs, sloppy joes, Johnny Marzetti, salad, baked beans and pudding for desert. Lunch was served on school lunch trays and everyone went through the lunch line as they did while they were in school. The podium that was used by the speakers was obtained by the Society at the Titus School auction when the school was closed.
