the Industrial Revolution!

It was in this very place that James Hargreaves invented the
Spinning Jenny in 1764, a machine that helped to
revolutionise the textile industry and paved the way for the
development of the great mills and factories that created

the original Northern
Powerhouse. It was also the scene of

This community spirit informed our bid to the Heritage
Lottery Fund and resulted in a grant of £32,300. Together with
£5000 from Section 106 funds following the building of a new
housing development in the village we have been able to take
steps to establish Stanhill Village as a heritage site.

As well as the physical heritage trail we have developed a
LOTTICE BROOK
purpose-built website so that our heritage can be accessed
both physically and digitally by visitors from around the
world.
A major part of our activity will include workshops, talks and
demonstrations for schools, residents and anyone who is
interested in James Hargreaves and his legacy. One of our
crowning achievements has been to recreate the original
Spinning Jenny as a working model, based on the original
patent drawings and which can be viewed on our website.

The Village Residents and Fete Committee works hard to
produce the annual village fete, an event that attracts well
over a thousand people every year. Our Pensioners Party and
Sing Around The Tree events at Christmas also attract popular
support. We work tirelessly on behalf of residents to support
good causes, improve the amenities of the village and make it
an attractive place to live.

The village includes many of the original weavers cottages as
well as a number of impressive buildings that reflect the
prosperity that was associated with the industrial
development of the area [3] in the 19th century. On the trail
you will encounter Hargreaves’ cottage as well as Stanhill Hall
[2], the birthplace and home of the popular and prolific
Victorian novelist, William Bury Westall. To the west of the
village you will find Peel Fold Farm [4] the original home of
Robert Peel, a farmer, textile innovator and entrepreneur who
encouraged Hargreaves in his developments. His grandson,
Sir Robert Peel, became Prime Minister and creator of the first
organised police force.
