Greetings to my fellow n Mu Iota Sisters! A Don month of school has gone by and many of us are saying “Wow- The time has just flown by”! The field of education is a very busy one and when you are busy the time does seem to pass quickly. This can be a good thing when you look back and realize that you were anything but bored. But it can be a not-sogood thing when time passes by so fast that you don‟t have time to reflect. So remember to slow down now and then and reflect on the events that have happened in your life. Football, cooler weather, and a change in seasons are upon us. As we move forward into this new season we will pull out the things in our closets we have not worn for a while like our sweaters and boots. Don‟t you like the- Kaye Porter se changing times of the year when we [email protected] can move into new modes of dress and Treasurer Laura Ressler [email protected] Parliamentarian Amy Ripkowski [email protected] October 2012 Fall also means that we need to plan for some big holidays in our lives. Halloween spent with decorations and „Trick or Treating‟. Thanksgiving spent with our families and friends. And Christmas shared with all the season‟s joy and blessings. I am going to wish all of you a happy (but circumspect) shopping time throughout this fall season. With this in mind, I also hope that you enjoy our program this month that should bring us new resources for many aspects of our lives. The web site “Pinterest” opens doors to decorating, cooking, bulletin boarding, arts and crafting, engaging activities for students, and many more things that I would need pages to report! Remember to stop and „smell the roses‟ as you continue into the many interests and occupations of fall. Move forward with energy, care and purpose into this fall season. activities? How many of you have upped your out-door activity levels as the temperature drops from high nineties to low nineties? I have heard several people speak about walking or running outside for exercise and setting up their fall gardens. I hope all of you can enjoy the changing season as much as I do. [email protected] On Friday, September 28th, members Amy Ripkowski and Gracie Zamarron sponsored eight 8th grade Science students at the TASA/TASB Conference's Digital Learning Pavilion in Austin. The two teams of four students each had four hours to create a product posing a solution to a task assigned to them upon their arrival. The teams were provided two laptops, two iPads, and a SMART Board to accomplish their task. The students did an amazing job showcasing their use of technology in a classroom for Superintendents and School Board members to see! One of the amazing students is the daughter of member Carmen Ashby. Alan and Mary Ellen Conner, Christy and Harmon Ackerman, and Faye Silk Ackerman at Christy's wedding September 1, Newcastle Wedding Gardens, Newcastle, CA. Chelsea Carrell and husband are expecting their first child at the end of March. Leia Miller is so excited to have a new niece or nephew! Congratulations!! Brown Elementary. She took a position with Sheldon ISD at Garrett Elementary. She is teaching at a new campus in its second year of operation. It is the most energy efficient school in Houston with solar tubes, rain water operated commodes, and geothermal heating. She is teaching fifth grade math under Rachel Walker, a former Kimmie M. Brown administrator. It is a much closer commute from Atascocita. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. This year we have a number of our sisters who have accepted jobs in other school districts or have changed roles in our school district. In an effort to recognize them for their professional and personal growth we are highlighting them in this newsletter. To the surprise of many, Glendene Brooks is now the K-5 music teacher in Devers ISD. She officially signs in at 12:15 p.m. and signs out at 3:15 p.m. for her three classes, on Mondays and Tuesdays, but of course, she usually stays later. She loves being back in music and being with kids again. According to Glendene, “This job is truly a gift.” Cynthia Miller mentioned her name to Liz Harris and after that, she got a call. Getting her husband Willie's approval was no problem because she brings him a What-a-Burger on the way home when she goes through Liberty. Toni Wadzeck left Cleveland Middle School this year and went to Sheldon I.S.D. teaching math at C. E. King High School. Sonia Santos left Woodrow Wilson Junior High in Dayton to take a job in Sheldon I.S.D. teaching English III at C. E. King High School. So far she “LOVES TEACHING JUNIORS!!!” Kristina Baggett moved from Kimmie M. Brown Elementary in Dayton and is teaching 3rd grade English Language Arts at Barbers Hill Elementary. In her 9 years of teaching, this is the first time she has worked in the same district with her husband. Gracie Zamarron moved from teaching 6th grade science at Nottingham Middle School, to 8th grade science at Woodrow Wilson Junior High in Dayton. M u Iota Chapter, Texas State Organization Page 6 Mechelle Perkins is currently the 6th Grade ESL Language Arts Teacher at Nottingham Middle School. She has a menagerie of new responsibilities with teaching the ESL and recently exited ESL students. Along with teaching, she is responsible for all ESL paperwork, monitoring ESL students in ALL core subjects, and collecting data for LPAC meetings. It has been challenging to learn, but she has a wonderful support team. She is even blessed with an ESL aide, Erika Perez, a soon to be teacher, herself! She is very excited about this new endeavor and looks forward to the time when she can finally "swim" rather than "treading water"! Shirley Sisk began a new position this year as counselor at Nottingham Middle School. Her responsibilities include developing students' class schedules, facilitating work with RTI and 504, assisting campus ESL facilitator with ESL student schedules, collaborating with Special Education teachers to assure special education student‟s academic needs are met, administering state assessments, and remaining accessible for students, parents, and staff. The staff at Nottingham Middle School takes its educational responsibilities seriously and work daily to meet the academic needs of their students. They have been very welcoming and supportive as she learns her new role. And the new principal, Jeff Nations, the husband of member Dani Nations is pretty good, too! We EXPECT SUCCESS! Donna McClaugherty has left Dayton ISD after 27 years of service to take a position with Sheldon ISD as the Instructional Science Coach at C. E. King High School. It is a change indeed as the teaching role in classroom is exchanged for the role of guiding teachers. Her children gave her a going away from „Dear Ole Dayton High School‟ party on September 29, 2012. It was attended by many friends. Thanks to all of you who have supported her through this big change.
