Pastoral
Care
Coming Home
There are all kinds of homecomings; family reunions, start of a new school year, returning to a place with special memories. After seven years as a
teacher at Sacred Heart School from 1980 – 1987 I am returning to active parish ministry as a pastoral care minister for Sacred Heart. Since I
have left Sacred Heart School I married my wife Tamara and raised 3 children; Bernadette, Damien, and Raphael. All three went to Sacred Heart
School. After leaving Sacred Heart School I went to the Des Moines Schools as an elementary and middle school counselor. Even though it was a
public school, the Lord opened up many opportunities for ministry to serve His people. In 2013 the Lord opened up a new path of ministry for me
as a chaplain for St. Gregory’s Retreat Center. St. Gregory’s is a drug and alcohol rehab center. Starting in the fall of 2010, I began the
formation process to become an ordained deacon in the Catholic Church. I was ordained on Aug. 16, 2014. After ordination I was assigned to St.
Catherine of Sienna Drake Newman Center. After a year at St. Catherine’s I was assigned to St. Pius X Parish in Urbandale. St. Pius is my current
assignment. Early this current year my position at St. Gregory’s changed. I missed ministering to the guests of St. Gregory’s but saw it as an
opportunity to see where the Lord wanted to lead me. During my formation for the diaconate I felt a strong call to help people through a healing
ministry. Trusting in the Lord I was overjoyed to be selected by Sacred Heart to become the new parish pastoral care minister. I truly felt the
Lord was bringing me home. Sacred Heart has been a spiritual home for me for many years. My last day in my last position was June 3, The Feast
of the Sacred Heart. How appropriate.
In the coming weeks I will lay out my vision for the pastoral care ministry. I want to solicit opinions from Fr. Chris and Fr. Luis, along with the
parish staff and the parish community. I want to build on the excellent foundations Nancy Carlson has built. Nancy brought a passion and vitality
to this ministry that I hope and pray to continue. She has been a great help in my transition to this new position and has promised me that she
will continue to do so. I will keep her at her word. Thank you Nancy.
In closing I want to thank the hiring committee for bringing me back home to Sacred Heart. I promise to do my best to live up to their and the
parish expectations of me. I will put my trust in the Lord to guide me in this new ministry. I ask all of you to pray for me in my new position as
Pastoral Care Minister and I assure you of my prayers for all of you. If you have any concerns or needs please contact me at 225-6414 ext. 315 or
email me at [email protected].
REFLECTIONS FOR THE WEEK
·
·
·
To follow Jesus means to do what is right. Name a time this past week when you followed Jesus by doing the right thing you were asked to do,
the first time, without an excuse.
The people in the story had lots of reasons why they couldn’t follow Jesus. What makes it hard to be a disciple of Jesus? Why do you make
the choice to follow Jesus even though it is hard?
Sometimes we are like the people in the Gospel and have many excuses for why we cannot follow Jesus. Name a time this past week that you
followed Jesus even though you had many excuses.

RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED BECOMING CATHOLIC? Are you
married or getting married to a Catholic, and have thought about some
day becoming Catholic? Are you intrigued by the idea of becoming
Catholic, but aren’t sure what being Catholic is all about, or what the
Church really teaches? Were you raised Catholic but never confirmed?
Would you just like to learn more about the Catholic Church? The
Catholic Church has a process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults) that is used to guide unbaptized persons through the process
of becoming Catholic. We also use a modified form of RCIA for
baptized Christians who were formed in the Christian faith in another
Christian denomination and would now like to join the Catholic Church.
We welcome new inquirers at any time, and encourage you to contact us
so we can help you with your questions and walk you through the steps to
becoming Catholic. There is no pressure or obligation to join the Church
as you learn what being Catholic is all about. To learn more, contact
Casey Conner at [email protected] or call 515-2256414 ext. 309. More information can also be found on the parish
website: www.sacredheartwdm.org/rcia.
“Sacred Heart and the community have made me feel at home. My
journey through RCIA has changed my life.” –Rebecca, new member
2014.
ALREADY CATHOLIC? Consider becoming an RCIA sponsor. See the
parish website for more details: www.sacredheartwdm.org/rcia.

our priests and deacons. We also seek membership from our parish
community. Our goal is to discuss what we see and hear, and discern
how things can run more smoothly before, during and after Masses
and other liturgical celebrations. We do not critique or in any way or
change what happens within the liturgical celebration (Word and
Eucharistic) itself. Rather, our goal is to make the celebrations more
accessible, welcoming, and inspiring to the people of faith.
Parishioner participation is for a two year term, at most. If you are
interested in serving as a parishioner representative on this
committee, please contact Sheila Hancock, Director of Music and
Worship, at sheila.hancock@sacredheart wdm.org.

brothers and sisters here in America. He is also into American
Football and Cars.
Nicole is very extroverted and outgoing girl. She wants to try as
many new things as possible while she is here. She is an A+ student

When you make a gift to the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa
of cash or other assets, we take your tax deductible contribution and

to grow over time, permitting you to recommend annual gifts to your
favorite charities. Opening a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) account is
easy to do. For more information on the benefits of establishing a
DAF please contact Mark Reed at [email protected]
or phone 515-237-5044.
Habitat’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
With the recent housing crisis and availability of vacant homes, many
Habitat affiliates are doing more home rehabilitations, including owneroccupied critical repairs, weatherization and exterior home
preservation services for homeowners in need.
Habitat follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither
race nor religion is a factor in choosing partner families. Partner
families are always selected based on their level of need, ability to pay
and willingness to partner.
Decisions regarding who will be approved for a home mortgage with
Habitat are based on three criteria:
· The family’s ability to repay a no-profit mortgage.
· The family’s need for safe, decent affordable housing.
· The family’s willingness to partner with their local affiliate.

SACERDOTES SAGRADO CORAZON

PADRE LUIS MEJIA,
VICARIO PARROQUIAL
